    TEXT and TRANSLATION
    Introit and Kyrie:
    Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
    et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet.
Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.
    Give them eternal rest, Lord,
and may light perpetual shine upon them.
A hymn becomes you, God, in Zion,
and a vow shall be paid to you in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer: to you all flesh shall come.
Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
    Offertory:
O Domine Jesu Christe, rex gloriae,
    libera animas defunctorum
de poenis inferni et de profundo lacu.
O Domine Jesu Christe, rex gloriae,
libera animas defunctorum de ore leonis,
ne absorbeat Tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum.
Hostias et preces tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus:
    tu suscipe pro animabus illis
    quarum hodie memoriam facimus.
Fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam
quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini eius. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory,
deliver the souls of the departed
from the punishments of hell and from the deep lake.
O Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory,
deliver the souls of the departed from the mouth of the lion,
lest Tartarus swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness.
We offer prayers and sacrifices of praise to you, Lord:
you receive them on behalf of those souls
    whose memory we recall today.
Cause them, Lord, to pass from death to the life
which you once promised to Abraham and his seed. Amen.
    Sanctus:
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth:
pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
    Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts:
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
    Hosanna in the highest.
    Pie Jesu:
Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem.
Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis sempiternam requiem.
Blessed Jesus, Lord, give them rest.
Blessed Jesus, Lord, give them eternal rest.
    Agnus Dei:
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
    dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
    dona eis sempiternam requiem.
    Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.
    Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
    et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
    give them rest.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
    give them eternal rest.
May eternal light shine on them, Lord,
with your saints for ever, for you are good.
    Give them eternal rest, Lord,
and may light perpetual shine upon them.
Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna,
    in die illa tremenda:
    quando caeli movendi sunt et terra;
dum veneris iudicare saeculum per ignem.
Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo,
dum discussio venerit, atque ventura ira.
Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis et miseriae,
Dies illa, dies magna et amara valde.
    Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
    et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death,
    on that terrible day:
    when the heavens and earth will be shaken;
when you will come to judge the age with fire.
I am made to tremble, and I am afraid,
since trial and anger are coming.
That day, a day of anger, disaster and sorrow,
That day, a mighty day, and one exceedingly bitter.
    Give them eternal rest, Lord,
and may light perpetual shine upon them.
    In Paradisum:
    In paradisum deducant angeli:
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.
    Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
    et cum Lazaro quondam paupere,
    aeternam habeas requiem.
May the angels lead you into paradise:
may the martyrs receive you as you arrive,
and bring you into the holy city of Jerusalem.
May the choir of angels receive you,
and with Lazarus, once a beggar,
    may you have eternal rest.

For such a small ensemble it is a challenge to do Faure´s Requiem. What is perhaps lost in lack of a big choir and a big orchestra can be gained in intimacy and nearness. And I think VOCES8 with this special orchestration succeeds in bringing this music close to us, for me this is a new a wonderful way to listen to this music. Thank you all so much!

For what I understood of this piece when I worked on it, is it was composed for a small vocal ensemble, not Big choir and orchestra. It was first performed for an ordinary man's funeral who had died in the parish of La Madeleine in Paris. It is designed to be intimate and profound.

Still, just 8 singers must be a minimum in performing this. I dont think it ever was performed with less than 8 singers. And I think the 8 singers in this are perfectly aware that they have to prove their existence. And they do.

In 1988, when I was a high school student, I first encountered Fauré's Requiem. Ever since, I've always found it regrettable that I couldn't find a soloist performance that perfectly suited the 'Pie Jesu', the highlight of the piece. Most soprano voices didn't fit, and boy sopranos (trebles) often lacked expressiveness. Today, I had the pleasure of listening to a performance that even Fauré would agree was perfect. The Offertorium was an unbelievable rendition as well. Voces8! I'm grateful to be living in the same era as you all.

This was the very first piece I performed when I arrived at Yale as a freshman, as a member of the choir for the university’s Episcopal Church services. It was all such a new and exciting experience for me in so many different ways. I had never been part of a “professional” choir before, and actually being paid to do something I would gladly do for free was an absolutely mind blowing experience for me! And then, at my very first rehearsal, I was introduced to this masterpiece. It was one of those experiences that stay with you for the rest of your life. I was not familiar with the work. I had never sung it. I had never even heard it before. But I will always remember that first rehearsal, where I was doing my very best to sing while absolutely sobbing. I had never heard or performed anything so transcendently beautiful. Thankfully, I was not the only crying. Many members of the choir were finding it difficult to hold it together. But after the tears, and with the brilliant music direction of Fenno Heath, I came to know that piece, to live it and breathe it, in a way that I had never experienced before, and have only experienced a few times since then. We performed the work very much as it is presented here, with a small chamber orchestra. And instead of 8 voices, we had 12. But that’s where the similarities end! I think we did a good job with the material, but nothing that came close to this sublime performance by Voces8 and this fine ensemble. But listening to this today has brought back some happy memories for me, and reminded me why this work has always held such a special place in my heart. Many thanks to everyone involved in this glorious performance! ❤

I finally got to rehearse and perform this piece all in one day in 2011. Members of various community choirs across the Denver-metro area were invited to perform and sing this piece in remembrance and for the relief efforts for the Haiti 2010 earthquake. The orchestra performed Barber's Adagio and Faure's Requiem followed. The Requiem was done in candlelight at night. The soft, warm glow, the music, the church setting, the somber nature of the concert made many people emotional. It was a performance I'll never forget.

Could not be more grateful for this marvelous performance. I deem this Faure opus to be one of the most evenly inspired pieces of all time. Rare are the cases in which every movement attract us with the same intensity. But in this opus there seem to be no flaws at all - judging from the standpoint of attention alone. You have permitted the music to bring out the tragedy, the heroism and the bliss we associate to the happening of death in Christian traditions. As to that, this piece is a lyrical summa, I believe, and you, in my opinion, the ultimate performers. Thanks again.

If I am remembering correctly, Faure wrote this Requiem for the small choir in the church where he was organist - La Madeleine in Paris. Pie Jesu was written for a boy soprano - no vibrato just a clean direct appeal to God for the repose of souls to Rest In Peace. Verdi’s Requiem was written for a large chorus with orchestra performing for an audience not in church. That’s why Faure’s requiem is so appealing and intimate. It was written to be performed at an actual funeral Mass in Church. Voices 8 does it well. 22:20

  • @Gallahaut

There was a performance of this requiem at a church and during the 5th movement when the sopranos were holding "lux" (22:49) right before that incredible harmony shift to the bVI... and as if by coincidence or divine intervention, the sun had just come out from behind a cloud shining into the church stain glass windows. And so I will always think of this moment as something so divine. The intamacy of this ensemble with such pure and exposed soprano voices in that moment is otherworldly.

I discovered this piece as an early teen and I fell in love with classical/choral music. It's quite dear to me. I love the more intimate chamber stetting. Still plenty of strength, but more personal and clearer than the big orchestras. The trebles are stellar in this as well. My favorite Pie Jesu so far - just angelic and effortless. Thanks to the entire ensemble. AMAZING JOB!!!

This is one of my favorite requiems. I had the privilege of singing it with a choir and full orchestra in New Jersey back in the mid 1970s. This is one of the more peaceful requiems composed and this scaled-down interpretation enhances that feeling of peace. Wonderfully done. Can't wait to see you again in NY this fall.

Of course a little naive opinion, as I am relatively new as a lover of this music. Not many years ago I had never heard Faurés requiem. So nowadays I also like for example Offertorium, Agnus Dei and Libera me. But still the most Pie Jesu.

The faster tempo in the beginning (am pausing at 4fifty8 to say this) allows a stunning sharpening of the harmonic (at least) structure. Unbelievable Pie Jesu 💎. Read in a comment it's a reduced orchestra here, didn't even realize maybe because I didn't compare with other versions or didn't hear any for years. Libera me sounded tremendous with your baritone's powerful diction. In Paradisum my ears & soul with VOCES8's voices indeed. Thank you all & each.

We just did the piece as a chorale 4 weeks back and that leads me to a better appreciation of what VOCES have done here. It is a deceptively simple-looking piece but pretty difficult to sing when you have a lesser number of voices. But this performance with just 8 voices blows me away. Wow

Oh my, once again, Voces8 and the ECO are at their glorious best. Like the Messiah, sadly, IMO, Faure's Requiem is usually sung by too many singers! How wonderful to hear and feel all its nuance and subtlety in this superb arrangement with an English translation, too. Wow. I was in bits, all over the place...you see, we sang the Faure Requiem in its liturgical setting for my Mum more than 30 years ago; there were only a dozen of us, with organ and harp..we weren't bad, but of course, nowhere near your league...you brought it all back...thank you. Special thanks to Andrea and Jonathon, and Barnaby, too, as to me, you are the ultimate musician.

I had not heard his Requiem before this, so this is wonderful. It is a little odd to see the 2-meter "separation" that seems strange today, or should. Nevermind that, your work just knocks me out.

Such a performance, the best of the English choral tradition pinpointing with minimal forces Faure's masterpiece. Deeply moving, this is one performance I'll turn to many times.
