Quick story. I really liked this movie as a kid, for some reason. My grandmother found out that I did and tried to get it for me on VHS. She bought me a VHS tape, but she didnt read the label close enough. She bought Child's Play instead. I have been side-eyeing dolls, as I walk past them ever since. Thanks Grandma.
One of my cousins is still afraid of chucky, even as an adult. She went by a car where a woman had the chucky doll inside her car and she was terrified. I don't blame her.
One thing NC forgot to mention in the review: the mother is a very despicable character. She only wants a child so she can be invited to parties and social activities
Kinda reminds of that American Dad episode where that woman only wanted to marry the principal because she thought having a mixed-race kid would help her get a job as comptroller.
You missed the point of why he misbehaved after being adopted, because his whole neighborhood and city was cruel to him ONLY because he wss adopted and nothing else
That's the thing, the opening montage kinda gives you the idea he's psychopathic but all he does in the actual plot is motivated by revenge, he doesn't attack people who don't attack him first.
I felt really sad for Junior and wished that someone would have held his hand and cuddled him while he cried on their shoulder. Ben Healy was really sympathetic to him and I wish his wife Flo was sympathetic and understanding to him too and that she could have cuddled him a lot and told him that he was loved and that he would never have to worry about being dumped ever again and they could have done their best to teach Junior how to behave with other people and pets and in situations in his life. I wish they did a film showing Junior as an adult years later showing how he's doing later.
Ben was the very first person to show that he would never give up on Junior and take him back to the orphanage and thus was the very first person that earned his full trust. Ben’s wife only wanted Junior for social status and to be able to be invited to parties.
Lmao as kids we used to rewind that scene over and over laughing so much to the point our mom would yell at us to shut up and let the movie play lol. My siblings and I still quote that scene to this day lol
Also this movie did the impossible. It actually used the tired "Here's Johnny!" Shining reference and managed to make it the funniest/darkest joke I've ever seen!
The thing is the dad is right, Junior’s issues aren’t just gonna go away if they unadopt him in fact it’ll probably make it worse as the only person who ever actually tried to be a nice and just parental figure to him ends up being just another failed parent who abandoned him. Junior clearly has serious issues and he needs a good parent to help him learn to control his impulsive and troublesome behaviour
This movie is an "I'm going to turn off my brain and laugh like an idiot for 80 minutes" kind of enjoyable. I laughed at the cat being thrown on grandpa, and I say this as someone who is such a cat person he can't enjoy Tom and Jerry.
The camera cuts behind him as soon as he catches the dumbbell. So, it looks like he falls forward, but really he's doing a 180 and falling off the opposite side.

Yeah this movie is much deeper and smarter than people give it credit to. And it's still is super funny till this day, idc what anyone thinks IT IS FUNNY
Fun fact: the director/producers originally wanted Macaulay culkin as junior in this after seeing uncle buck but didn’t think he “fit the bill” and didn’t think he was the right choice or could portray a brat . this was before he was even signed to home alone . Boy were they wrong lol .

@@wstine79 I've had one or two redheads. So far I've had mostly diverse students and some of them have driven me up the wall but they're not children of Satan
I have a soft spot in my heart for the Problem Child movies. I was adopted, and I was always getting into trouble as a child. I remember that one of my elementary school teachers even told my mother to her face, right in front of me, "It's not too late; you can still take her back." My parents always told me that they will do everything they can to help me, and to work through any issues that come up, and that they committed to me for life the day they filled out the first batch of paperwork. Nothing I will ever do will make them give up on me. I can disappoint them, but they'll never see me as anything but their child, no matter how badly I screw up, no matter if I screw up because of my own decisions. That's pretty much exactly what these movies are about too. Ben Healy will not give Jr. up, and will work with him to get through whatever comes up, no matter how hard or frustrating it might be.
@@thelonewanderer1191 Wow, so classy, calling someone a name because they don't like a movie. I guess I'll have to kill myself now because you said something mean. Grow up.
It's mean spirited as hell.. As a kid it was fun to watch this but as an adult *"Damn this movie was really mean! Really Really Mean"* and the oddest sh-t was my mother loved *Problem Child* when we were kids.. true story..
I loved this movie as a kid, actually watched it so much that I wore out several VHS copies, much to the annoyance of my parents and siblings. Clearly, I wasn't the smartest kid out there. But, looking back on it now, in all fairness, this has to be one of John Ritter's best performances, may he rest in peace.
I remember seeing this in the theatre when I was five. I asked for it for my birthday and Christmas every year it became a running family gag. My parents flat out refused to “waste another single cent” on this movie.
And also has one of the oddest casting choices of any movie. He meets a woman in the second movie that he starts dating, that is played by the wife in the first movie.
So they're basically just trying to be mean spirited like South Park did. Like Mr Peabody & Sherman. It's the 30th anniversary of the original IT this year.
John Ritter actually played intimidating roles really well. On Buffy he played a manipulative, misogynistic killer robot and he was genuinely unsettling.
Fun bit of trivia: The voice of Junior in the animated show was Ben Diskin. He was one of the voices of Eugene in Hey Arnold, as well as Numbuh 1 and Numbuh 2 in Codename: Kids Next Door.
@@RandalfElVikingo Only an approximate list of those US films that we have a cult status, I think there is more: Home Alone 1-2, Terminator 1 - 2, Commando, Pulp Fiction, Don't Threaten South Central while drinking your juice in your neighborhood, The Fifth Element, Blade, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Mortal Kombat 1995, Problem Child 1 - 2, Men in Black, Back to the Future 1-3 , Dumb and Dumber, Star Wars (The original trilogy and the prequels are equally loved) The Babysitters 1994.

Before you accuse someone of something, remember how many wars the United States has started all over the world, which countries it has attacked and terrorized civilians.
6:22 Frozen has Elsa accidentally nearly kill her sister by making Anna nearly die of Hypothermia at the end of the movie and Elsa nearly impales one of the Arendalian guards in the eyes, face, chest, and legs with icicles as long as spears. And she nearly pushes one of the guards off of her castle's balcony knowing he would fall to her death, AND not to mention one of the guards was shooting at her with a crossbow aiming for her face multiple times. So yes, the PG rating is warranted but more towards the end of the film.
This was part of my childhood, and even watched the duology as recently as last month. I'm one of those people who liked them. Also, they changed the "The End" screen for the first film compared to the VHS. The kid isn't bellowing to the audience, and then broke something off-camera. That is actually a great idea: A film where Chucky comes across Problem Child and tries to scare and kill him only for Problem Child to turn the tables.
The kid actor is playing this role TOO WELL! I agree that lots of children in movies can be kinda wooden, but the fact is they don't necessarily know what to do, at least in the same way as a trained adult. This actor seems as if he knows EXACTLY how to be. It's as if an actually trained adult transferred their mind into a child. He is so self aware, it's almost disturbing. Either this kid is naturally like this or he's actually quite intelligent. This is the equivalent of telling a dog to sit and it pulls up a chair to a table and starts reading a news paper. It's far more than you would expect. And then there's the fact that someone wrote this. Adults can be good writers, but they usually can't capture this sort of insanity. It's as if someone actually sat around in elementary schools and just watched bratty kids be bratty kids. ONCE AGAIN! IT'S AS IF AN ADULT LITERALLY BECAME A CHILD!
The nuns high-fiving as Junior is leaving the orphanage is one of my favorite split second comedy moments ever. The actresses sold that little sliver of a scene so perfectly.
I'm okay with confessing that I went to this in theaters--I believe on the strength that they played a song I kind of liked, George Thorogood and The Destroyers' "Bad To The Bone", in the trailer. I believe I was on some kind of John Ritter kick as well (I also saw "Stay Tuned" in theaters after all). This served to finally remind me of this film's existence after all these years, so yeah, thanks for that, but I suppose in an era which reeked of market research and old-world censorship, this could be seen as refreshing. You gotta wonder about the eras of film making it led to, though... EDIT: Oh, I properly predicted you'd snap up that first Michael Richards joke. ;)
Jeremiah Hester there was a lot of TV movies he did where he was really good. Even in It he’s great! He’s probably the best adult actor in that miniseries
@@tykamen5588 Makes sense, don't want to bring people into the same building if possible since you could be an active carrier for two weeks and not show any symptoms.
Apparently, Problem Child wasn’t even originally meant for kids and families. It was supposed to be an adult comedy, envisioning a dark, adult satire of the then-popular trend in films where cute kids teach cynical adults how to love, as seen in Baby Boom, Parenthood (directly spoofed by the film's poster), Look Who's Talking, Uncle Buck, Mr. Mom, Kindergarten Cop and Three Men and a Baby. However, the studio insisted upon turning it into a children's film.
When I was a kid, I thought the dad was made a pillow for Junior, showing that he's welcome at the home. Looking at it again, there's clearly a different meaning.
@@NicholasRSims I'm honestly waiting for him to do live action tv shows of Disneycember. Though it may not be possible because of how time consuming this is going to be.
@@NicholasRSims I never even considered that possibility. I mean if he is really all out of ideas and really wants to keep Disneycember alive, then I guess?
We're on the same page, Critic! I also love this film! I think what I liked was the kid was DARK! He wasn't Dennis the Menace or Bart Simpson! He was the Good Child if that brat had a sense of humor. And I think that is what set it apart! All of those other bratty kid movies back in the day were cutesy. This one was definitely for those of us with a dark sense of humor. And John Ritter did a great job playing up the nice dad. That juxtaposition made it one of those movies I'll never forget. I'll take this one over Home Alone any day of the week!
19:47 Junior says "You're not gonna hold me to all that stupid shit about being nice are ya?" Looks like they had to change it to "Stupid junk i said about being nice" in voice over to keep it PG.
Never in my life have I stopped a nostalgia critic review and decided to watch the movie before continuing, yet five minutes into the video I know I must
You have chosen wisely. I was fortunate enough to get to see this movie and its sequel regularly as a child. Maybe it has problems as an adult, but then, it's not really made for adults.
You missed another “What? Only PG!” moment. When Michael Richards stops at the gas station he sees a snack cake called a “Smiley Pie” and laments that he hasn’t eaten one in years, and hungrily munches on them. Use your imagination for the double entendre.
Doug in the morning he decided to make a NC of this movie: "Let's do a challenge and see if we can up the ratings for this video to 1% no matter how i really feel."
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer I wasn't just aiming at Doug. Doug is an influencer, and all influencers want attention and are angry (even if they are characters) regardless of their ideologies. In the last month he's reviewed Mulan, both Bill and Ted movies, The Iron Giant, the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings, and Elmo in Dreamland. He's literally only review two recent releases - Playing with Fire and the Lion King remake and the latter at least has a nostalgic tie-in.

Pray for Chucky.

Apparently, Problem Child wasn’t even originally meant for kids and families.
