i'm sure there are a lot of differing opinions surrounding this topic, but my aim is to provide information to help people make the most educated decision in their boot buying/fitting journey. thank you to Dude and Cole Sport for sharing their expertise, time and space to make this video possible.
Boy this brings back good memories!! I worked for Raichle in the early 80's and had my own ski shop in Colorado from 1984 to 2004. I was lucky to not work a day in my life......I loved the ski industry! Thanks Lucas for a great video.
Great video explaining the proper boot fit process. It does a great job of explaining the process of aligning the knee and determining the degree of correction that might be necessary. Wish Dude had gone through exactly how he did the sole cant. He seems to have jumped to the final step when he was grinding the top of the toe and heel so it will interface properly with the binding. This was some world class boot fitting.
An excellent education in complete boot fitting, Dude is the man. Re: 3pc vs 2pc. Pidgeon holing either boot as race or park only does a disservice to both, even Dude didn't come down hard. It should be pointed out that the original 3pc Raichle Flexon Comp was one of the most successful World Cup race boots of it's day before being adopted by the nonrace competitors. As the old saying goes...It's no the sword, it's the swordsman.
yah agree! i think dude was just saying more the most common use cases that people utilize the different boots for. its more common that park skiers are gonna use a 3piece boot vs 2piece and more common that a downhill racer is gonna use a 2 piece vs 3piece, but as with everything in skiing - it all comes down to personal preference.
Very informative. Anyone questioning whether they should splurge for a custom boot fitting. Just do it. You’ll love it and you’re skiing will change. Also what a name. Dude.
I CANNOT WAIT TO WARCH THIS VDIEO!! Skiing today so I’ll watch this after and am SO stoked!!!🔥 thanks for grinding bro and giving us all this amazing content
Awesome content proper gear is important and often times omitted when searching for boots otherwise one wont be comfortable in the mountain. Thanks for the video.
Thankyou for sharing. Two things you may or may not have tried for "spot punching" 1) Protecting the adjacent area with heat shields (just Cardboard wrapped in aluminium foil) will localise the punch more precisely and stop unnecessary surrounding deformation. 2) heating the head of the punch. Same effect.
Great video. Thanks for the info. How about a video on one of the most overlooked but important pieces of equipment... bindings. Secondly, base grinding, edge beveling, and waxing are are also topics I am not very familar with. Would be great to see more videos like this one about equipment and the fine tuning of the equipment.
the info on the three piece boot was great to know because I just bought K2 revolver team it'll interesting to see if I can feel the difference that the tongue makes
Good job documenting the fit process. I'm not sure if the boots have an option for cuff alignment, but checking upper cuff contact / clearance while standing on the footbed w/o the liner may have been worth checking before canting. Asymmetry of the shin can result in canting that can be solved by cuff alignment.
Great episode. I have significant external tibial rotation (way more than 3 degrees!) and use a combination of shimming, orthotics, and also mounting the bindings externally rotated (so that the ski faces forward when my naturally externally rotated foot is facing out). I suspect this is an unaddressed issue for lots of skiers.
I have a similar tibial rotation. I was always curious if this would be a solution for me. I only notice it on like narrow traverses and times I need my skis to be close together, my right knee bends inward. Anything else you can share? My worry was it would feel awkward for my foot to be diagnol on the ski and not being able to get the proper edge leverage
It’s an interesting question. I can’t answer scientifically, but My feeling is that any loss of leverage is made up for by the ability to get a higher edge angle (because your internal femoral rotation is no longer limited) and as you note the benefit of being in a natural position when straighlining. Also your uphill ski will track in more of a straight line.
Crazy attention to detail at that shop. Really makes you start to question how good do you think your boots REALLY fit your foot? Curious to see what Dude would say about mine! Thanks for documenting the process
The canting part of the fitting was super interesting. Makes total sense though. I’ve never heard of that process before, and it makes me wonder if there is anywhere near me that can do that.
Great folks at Cole Sports. The big question is have you ever skied with Adam Cole? IF not, when you do you're in for a treat of how the sports is done!
Is there any disadvantage to using a cant between the binding and the ski? This would eliminate modifying the boot. The obvious advantage to canting the boot is it it will work with all of your skis.
the boots msrp for $700 from salomon. i believe the boot fitting is about $150 and then if you do custom footbeds, you're probably looking at another $150. dont quote me on those numbers though other than the boot price.
I prefer 3 piece boots. I tried to go back last year and just couldn't do it. I dont like the sensation of the tung and spine separating or yhe tung pushing to the side when flexing into the boot. I love the feeling of the cuff bending wirh me. I think Dalbello does it the best. I also really prefer wrap liners
Depends on the boot, how much work you have done (e.g. custom footbed) and where you have it done. If you get the whole thing, expect to pay around $1,000. That can go up or down a bit depending on the boot.
i'm not saying that the other person is wrong in what they are saying, but the boot fitting process here was significantly cheaper than $1,000. the footbed can be pretty expensive ($100-300) and the boot fitting process was about another $150 here with dude.
Do not put just any boot in an oven. Only boots with non moldable structure in them are meant to be heat molded. Otherwise you will completely ruin the integrity of the boot/shell. If the boot says it’s not heat moldable, do not put it in a boot oven.
Also, when he first heat molded the boots, he should have put a pad under the socks in high pressure areas. That would have moved the medial toe area more and made punching unnecessary.
Ski boot are extruded and what ever the molecular state the material was, it will try to return to that state no matter who, whatever adjust so said/says ...it just physic

That was a nice balance between being entertaining and informative. Marry your boots - date your skis!
glad you liked it!

damn thats a while! thanks for watching!
I thought we had pros at the boot store we go to but Dude is next level. Thanks for the great video. First time commenting on TH-cam as well. 🙂
thanks for watching man!

Smart to spend time with family. Great example.
agreed!
Colorado resident, but planned a trip to ColeSport in PC just to have my wife fitted by Dude. Currently sitting right in front of him thanks to Lucas!
Start to finish, how long? Also did you bring your new boots or buy from CS?
The way they expanded the boot is super cool - nice video
I can't believe Dude is still there haha hes been there forever!
haha i know right!

hope you had a good day out there man!
A boot fitting guru is more valuable than words can express.
This was a excellent video Lucas thanks for sharing this I've been looking into canting
This "Dude" is a true master of his craft!
yeah he is!!
Awesome content proper gear is important and often times omitted when searching for boots otherwise one wont be comfortable in the mountain. Thanks for the video.
very true!
Dude has mad knowledge in his field.
If you have an old guy fitting your boots. Chances are he knows what he's talking about.
Will definitely be using Cole Sport rentals out West this season for the meetup! Thanks Lucas, Joe & Dude!!!
hell yeah dude!
Great informational video Lucas 👍🏽
Glad you liked it!

I have a flat feet and they saved my life! Thanks Cole Sport
Very informative video! Looks like papa Joe never skips leg day 😂
Haha he’s a big road biker!
guess I know where I'll be taking my boys to get their next ski boot fitting. Not too long of a flight from WA.
awesome to hear that!
Very cool to see the process. On a side note, I think Joe may have a ski suit addiction. 😂
Haha! Dude has like 11 suits now
the info on the three piece boot was great to know because I just bought K2 revolver team it'll interesting to see if I can feel the difference that the tongue makes
nice man enjoy them!
Just got my first set of boots/skis a week ago. Can’t wait to pick them up and go for a rip. Love the behind the scenes type of video also!
Nice man congrats!
I was skeptical about boot fitting until I went earlier this fall. It really is noticeable when the boot is matched to your foot!
Good job documenting the fit process. I'm not sure if the boots have an option for cuff alignment, but checking upper cuff contact / clearance while standing on the footbed w/o the liner may have been worth checking before canting. yeah these boots do have a cuff alignment screw!
Good video, i think I'll be looking into some shims and cants.
good idea!
that dude has a ton of knowledge on boots
yeah that dude is good
now I know what fitting I missed out on with my local shop boot fitting.
im sure your local shop did great though too!
love park city
Me too !

thanks man! always good to get a check up!
Bloody awesome to watch, wish the guys here did they same thing as I have large wide feet ;)
the SOB actually made B-Roll of a boot fitting. Legendary.
did u really call me a SOB?? legendary
The canting part of the fitting was super interesting. Makes total sense though. I’ve never heard of that process before, and it makes me wonder if there is anywhere near me that can do that.
Yeah! Definitely worth getting an alignment if you can!
I no longer feel like the smartest man in the room. I will never buy a pair of boots without a custom boot fitting by Dude.
Haha! A proper boot fitter is a smart investment !
I’m just here for the Homies 😂
Always 😂
Have you tried out the BOA system on the new ski boots?
I have! I like it
Great information.
agreed!
Did they charge extra for the boot fitting or was it included in the purchase of the boot?
Thanks for making me wanna do double legs at the gym, Joe. Sheesh! 😅
Papa Joe looking like Quadzilla!
Hahaha 😂

I do not know the answer to that but it’s a good question.
Can you share how much Joe’s boots cost (or price range for similar boots) + how much the boot fitting with Dude cost?

@@LucasCatania17 thanks!
13:34 thats one jibby look!
hhaha a little too baggy!
Is Papa Joe on any supplements? His legs are ripped.
haha no! hes been a big road biker his whole life though
Lucas what brand boot heaters did you have installed on your new ski boots
Therm-ic Set Heat Kit + C-Pack 1300 Boot Heaters

All about personal pref !
How much does the whole custom boot process cost?
Depends on the boot, how much work you have done (e.g. custom footbed) and where you have it done. If you get the whole thing, expect to pay around $1,000. That can go up or down a bit depending on the boot.

Find a good booter fitter and never them 'em go. So important for performance and comfort. I like Bootworks PCMR base .
Agree !
Cool video, man. Maybe back up with the camera a bit.
Wow.. When I had my boot fitting it was nowhere near as advanced as that..
Canting is a big step that is often missed !
@@LucasCatania17 I think I remember canting from my days as a racer..
I’m pretty sure papa Joe can squat 500 lbs after looking at those fine legs.
Haha ! He just did 275 yesterday
