- i decided to do a series of videos about tips around edge retention. I will try to keep the videos a bit shorter and concentrate on smaller pieces of each tip. this one has to do with expectations about edge retention, what will dull your edge and what will just wreck it. caltoncutlery.com
Excellent video that puts edge retention expectations in perspective.

After long, a knife sharpening video
yes, it has been a little while. but there are quite a few coming for the next couple months at least :}
@@joecalton1449Looking forward to them. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences
Excellent video Joe. 👊
thanks!!
That is why I have two hatchets one that is mine and has a polished razor edge and one I loan which has a nice edge at least when I loan it. lol
and when someone asks you if they can borrow a knife, before you say yes, you ask "what for" :}
Your videos on sharpening are awesome. Learned a lot. Youve given me confidence to start making my own knife.
that is very cool! I hope your knife turns out good!
Is it preferable to stop sharpening/honing just short of attaining extreme razor sharpness as the edge will be microscopically thicker and will hold up better. In the shaving world, DE Feather blades are reputed to be the sharpest but dull after just one maybe two shaves at best
i have heard of folks doing that. my biggest question is how do you know that you are stopping just short? how far short would you have to stop, and is that repeatable? and is that the way that you like to work? i like a sharp knife, so I sharpen to a sharp edge, then touch it up as needed until its time for a complete new edge, then sharpen and repeat.
Just for curiosity what state are you in???
Wyoming
