M Shadows gets shit for not using distorted vocals as heavily as they did in their older material...also his nasal tone, but let's be real, dude is super talented and a great writer.

But we couldn’t give more fucks about them haters! For me, Matthew will always be my fav metal vocalist and A7X will always be my fav metal band! 🤩
He did have vocal surgery a long time ago. In their earlier days some of his vocals didnt sound the best. He does sound better now though

Such a great voice. People love Synyster Gates and the Rev, but it was Matt’s voice that made me fall in love with the band when I first heard City of Evil.
First song without Rev RIP, but Mike Portnoy is a beast stand in for this album
Wasn't this one of the Nightmare songs w the Rev? If I recall correctly, they wanted to start this concept album w this character plunging into a nightmare but the whole concept album was sort of put on hold after the Rev's passing.

Portnoy wrote and recorded the drums on this song. The rest of the album was written by the Rev, but recorded by Portnoy I believe.

You’re breaking my heart lol. This is one of my fav songs of this record. The vocals are not a problem to me I paid more attention to the drumming. I was more interested in hearing how their drums would change after the rev passed away.
The drummer for this album is Mike portney from Dream Theater
10 fucking years ago. I was going into Freshman year of high school when this came out and i saw them on tour during this album cycle. Crazy how time flies. RIP Jimmy, my man.

M shadows has a weird voice. Sometimes it sounds full of grit and power and sometimes it just sounds like he’s whining and complaining. Still love it tho. Just goes to personal preference. Nothing wrong with not liking it.
To me, it seems like he can go from really aggressive to soft and calm in a matter of seconds and it has a whole different tone in his voice. It's amazing.
That's honestly what put me off the band for so long, I don't like the whiney tones by this song and hail to the king I find straight up bangers, I really hated his earlier vocals and it's put me off tons
The nasal whiny part of M Shadows’ vocals always reminded me a lot of Axl Rose. Not a big fan of Axl’s vocals, but love Shadows. As I understand he love Guns N Roses so it might just be his influences shining through. Which is why I also think he reminds me of Phil Anselmo of Pantera.

OK, Vin clearly has the same love hate relationship we all have with m. Shadows voice. BUT, he did a cover of radio head with the drummer of System of a down. STREET SPIRIT. This made us all love his weird tone.
It's an amazing example of his voice on a different gendre. You don't have to make a reaction video, but you should at least hear it on your own time. Thanx for another beautiful video guys

@@ericgorman9942 its technically a point of contention but I mention it because there is the interpretation of it. If I'm not mistaken its a Gnostic view of the harrowing of hell but it addresses the above concerns.

Nightmare live at pinkpop is i would think is their best live performance of this song
Axl Rose of Guns n Roses has been a major inspiration to M Shadows, so he uses the nasal sounds to make the song more diverse. If you observe, in just Nightmare M Shadows uses different vocal styles and textures, and plays with the character, vocally. He gives emphasis to every line. Most vocalists don't think that way.

@@abdur1300 Because they can't. Very few people have a lot of diverse talent, most can just do one thing well. I always thought he should've been an actor on the side because he can play with his voice so well.
One of the best "horror" movies I've seen done about hell is called "As Above So Below." Really interesting concept. If y'all haven't seen it, it's on Netflix.

I remember going to see these guys back in 2011 with my parents when I was like 13....They started the show with this song and a dude hung himself off of the rafters and was kicking and flailing around for the start of the song.....it was amazing!

Vin I hear what you are saying...I don't feel that way but I understand. There are A LOT of metal fans that feel the same way about Matts voice. Just to put it into context though....This is the same fight that people have with Dave Mustaines voice. In some sections they love it...In some they hate it... I guess you have to take the good with the bad because the band is very good.
I hope everyone out there is staying safe. Remember Just because you don't think you may die from being infected doesn't mean that someone you spread it to won't.
The difference being Mustane is not a good vocalist while Matt at his peak was one of the best vocalists on the world even though some people may find his timbre annoying.
@@Omega-fb9ji That is not entirely true. Dave Mustaine just happens to be the vocalist for one of the biggest Metal Bands EVER. To say he is not a good vocalist is not only false but down right moronic. You can't have a legendary band with a lead vocalist that is not good! Your argument as far as people finding Matts voice somewhat annoying because of it's tone is a proven fact. It is also a fact that Megadeth is in the top 5 Metal bands of all time.
If i remember correctly, Shadows had to get vocal Chord surgery after this record, because of years of blowing out his voice screaming improperly.
@@jhamilton1007 he didn't have vocal cord surgery. He had to take a break and rest his cords because of severe vocal cord strain. That's no different than most other singers that sing this style
Avenged Sevenfold were originally a metalcore band that mostly screamed. They changed their sound on their third album. I don't have a problem with his voice but some people do. The album is dedicated to their late drummer The Rev who had mental issues and addiction problems and died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. Some people think this song is about him.

Yeah I know what you mean when he sings that line near the end: "... as your nightmare comes to life.." He likes to make that quacky sound sometimes. And it's definitely a choice of course because he felt like that was the best way that line would sound I guess. I for one think it works. It adds some dynamics to the vocals as a whole. In general I love his singing. I think he's one of the most technically proficient singers in rock and metal actually

Just to add to Sori's comic strips there was a joke at university whilst Dante's Inferno was on the reading list. One of the circles Dante is shown has people up to their chins in liquid excrement. This or Afterlife was the first music I ever got into. back in middle school. dont listen to much A7X from anything except City of Evil and Waking the Fallen, but its good stuff
You should definitely focus on any song from "Waking the Fallen". Avenged Sevenfold's best album by far. None of the other albums even come close.
I think you would also like: A Plea for Purging - The Life, and then A Plea for Purging - Room for the Dead, and finally A Plea for Purging - The Death. Its a great trilogy of songs from their last album that really touch on a lot of the stuff you were talking about in this video with perceptions of what heaven and hell are for each of us.

Alright, i think you guys are ready for The Beast And The Harlot. Matt's voice sounds much better on this album. The song is about the Fall Of Babylon, the Harlot, and how it correlates to Hollywood's excess and what will be it's eventual downfall. Trust me, the song is a banger.
