As a Powell fan it is frustrating that he couldn't quite cope at the major competitions. He was arguably the favourite going into the 2004 Olympics, and should have at least medalled, but got 5th. In 2007 he was the clear favourite for gold but ended up 3rd. In 2008 he wasn't quite as fast as Bolt but should have gotten 2nd, but ended up with 5th again. At the World Indoor Champs this year, he was the favourite going into the 60m, but got 2nd! I honestly do not understand how one can so consistently fail at the big meets.
its definetly a mental thing. like in 2009 when he goofed around a bit more before the race and he got 3rd behind bolt and gay who were in their prime, wasnt to great but he ran 9.84 . and also his training is too race specific. that is another reason he fails in big competitions. he simply doesnt have the endurance to do 3 round events. he is a horrible 200m runner, he has never broken 20 i dont think and in all the races ive seen of him he is pretty much dying at the last 50 like the last 50 of a 400. this is just what i believe based on what ive read.
2004 to 2007 was Asafa prime time! but the video clearly shows that he is nervous, very nervous! It's to late for him now I missed the spot for world and olympic gold
Powell was the biggest choker in championship finals. He could have and should have dominated from Athens up to Beijing. He had the potential to run in the mid 9.6's but always shut down.
Stuart Storey summed it up perfectly in the end: Powell faltered once again, reminiscent of the Athens Olympics. He dominated the season on either side of the Games but failed to secure a medal when it counted the most. Similarly, this time he did not manage to clinch the silver.
@Damien Montero the only 2 occasions when he delivered when it mattered were the commonwealth final in 06 which he won and the world final in 09 when he took the bronze after he recovered from an ankle injury during the season
They are all on something. It’s ridiculous the evolution of some of these guys. They are nowhere this year and then the next they are so unbeatable, RIDICULOUS.
I've never seen the entire race before. Asafa threw away that gold. It was his up to 40-50m. And I notice Tyson doesn't look quite so humble in 2007 like he does now.
I wish Atkins had stayed sub-10, he was great to watch because he was so powerful. 9.91 in to a headwind easily gives rise to plenty more sub-10s, particularly with improvement in future seasons. Anyway, the Caribbean > USA at 100m, despite the massive population difference
He was close to gold medal shape. Only one faster than him that year was Gay. He let Atkins catch him at the line. You can see Asafa give up at about 85m-90m and not pump his arms anymore. He did something similar in 2009. When Asafa would get caught in the middle of the race, as in his start wasn't good enough to pull away, he'd tense up and not run at his best. Have you seen the front cam footage of this race? Asafa was very tense in the face and neck most of the race. He did not run relaxed at all which is why he lost to Gay who was honestly in the best form in 2007 anyway since he went and won the 200m after this against Bolt and Spearmon. Go and watch when Asafa ran 9.74 while slowing down in a semi final to break his 9.77 world record. I think he did later in 2007 because in 2008 Bolt broke it in NY and ran 9.72. Asafa was extremely relaxed and let his training take over and easily ran 9.7 with perfect form. He pushed too hard in this race in this video here in 2007 so he lost his form toward the end and only ran 9.9. Big difference. Also watch his 9.72 after the Olympics in 2008 when he ran through the line in perfect form all the way through.

He was running the 200m and came in 2nd to Tyson Gay at this very championship. Tyson won both the 100m and 200m this year. Bolt didn't run the 100m as a pro until the next year, 2008. His coach Glen Mills told him he had to break the Jamaican 200m national record before he'd let him run the 100m. Bolt broke the record at the 2007 Jamaican National Championships before the World Championships here.
You act like the whole sport isn't dirty. Powell, Ottey, Blake, Carter, SAFP, Mullinsgs, Those were the notable Jamaicans that had issues. USA had Gatlin, Gay, Jones, Lewis Green etc. If you follow this sport you know its dirty as hell. ALL SIDES. If Caribbean nations want credibility then get on board with an off season test program. Also WADA get with the program and issue much stiffer penalties for masking agents etc. and lifetime bans for steroids. See how many sub 10 you get with those things in place. Get a grip...all of em cheat and finger point.

@@royjohnson1747 True but they also don't consistently run under 10 seconds then. The fastest natural sprinters tend to be around 10 seconds, on a consistent basis at least. You have to read about how much this has been going on and how it was obvious before the 1988 Olympics that most if not all of the top athletes had taken something to recover and train harder. For throwers, they said 40 years ago that to even throw over a certain distance you had to take a steroid to get stronger. You couldn't even get what was internationally considered a good distance without some drug according to them (I know of natural enhancers myself but medical professionals consider pharmaceuticals superior to natural supplements/herbs smh). In the 70's and 80's, American college campuses used to give football players and T&F athletes steroids in tablet form in a bowl in their locker room. Speed Trap by Charlie Francis talks in detail about many of these things as well as having names and dates and drug protocols and schedules of the top athletes up until the 1980s as well history of enhancement in sport which go back over a thousand years. There have been powerful organizations who invest in pro athletes, enhance them and, because of their connections, their athletes urine/blood samples automatically get passed. An organization invested in athletes participating in the 2009 World Championships btw and knew who would get 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the 100m based on their analysis (if the athletes were healthy of course). The sprinter who they told would get 3rd told this story how he was in a room with other top athletes and these people and that they injected him with what they said was some legal substance but wouldn't give him any details. The sprinter was natural at the time and had a PB of around 10 flat. He got hurt leading up to the Championship but he noticed that he was still running close to his PB while injured. He had to drop out though and Asafa Powell ended up getting 3rd in the final instead. These enhancers they give them can take tenths off of their PBs. If you know the 2009 World Champs 100m final that would mean to get 3rd, this 10.0 sprinter would have to drop about 2 tenths from his PB. This same sprinter later on had been in a meeting with another organization which told him how the process works which I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph. If the athletes are connected to the right people and do what they're told, they never have to worry about getting a positive drug test.
Before 2008 Bolt exclusively ran the 200m professionally outside of Jamaica (he ran some 400m races for training but only in Jamaica). He was in the next event here which was the 200m but he came 2nd to Tyson Gay. Go watch the final. It was a good race.
