It does seem like a lot of this stuff happens to "perfect" families.
Usually when people try hard to keep up a certain “image” the image is no where close to the actual reality. Couples that are usually upfront with their high and lows usually have a image that is similar to their reality.
I hate when people say that about my partner and i because we are not the way people assume we are privately like in public. Maybe they acted well around people but weren’t always so happy together alone
anyone that calls themselves perfect or gets called that by people are always suspicious. no one/no family is ever perfect. all a "perfect family" is, is a family that hides everything and cares too much about how they appear to others. its especially suspicious if the immediate family even says theyre perfect, like whats going on that their family doesn't even know about their problems
it’s still mind blowing to me that this whole accident during 01’ was filmed like they knew it was going to be a documentary. like they’re lives were filmed. i didn’t see any grieving or finding justice for the mother. so sad.

What I don't get is how you are allowed to refuse to talk to the police! Issue a warrant for his arrest and being him in for questioning! I don't understand.
That’s not the weirdest part. Every side hired their own expert to work against each other regarding some topics that show no room for speculation. Experts acted strange and slightly emotional, answered questions outside their specialty. Son suddenly found a key evidence but doesn’t call the police to investigate? It’s against the law especially after finding a potential murder weapon, you’re required to call the police, no photographer or personal investigator needed. We received information that Elizabeth was in fact murdered by blunt force but no separate investigation was made. What’s with the sisters digging up old stories and, what’s that all about? Sexual orientation? What’s going on with the daughters? Are they inside a cult or is that just how rich families operate? How come no one seems to care about the mothers death, they seem to be fine thinking that she fell and that’s that, end of the story no alternative. Since I’m an emotional creature I do have the strong feeling that he is guilty, but after watching the series I don’t see how he got evicted. There was no motive. No weapon. No witnesses. There’s only the body, the blood and Liz death in Germany which he’s not guilty of though. That’s just not enough to proof that you can say for sure. Just sketchy stuff. I didn’t enjoy the series, strange camera povs and lots of strange people. I belobe they’re all from a different dimension than me
They didn't use the owl in the defense. They didn't even think of it! But if you actually research the full theory, it fits the evidence the most!
She was attacked in the front yard. A blood trail was found from the front to the stairs. She then fainted. They also said that their were feathers in her hand. The defense attorney assumed it was from a pillow, but didn't think it was important. It also matches the head wounds. Lacerations without skull fractures. This doesn't happen in a beating to the head.
@@truthtransistorradio6716 Absolutely no way there would be THAT much blood on the WALLS of the stairway unless she was beaten there. The autopsy showed signs of a beating. And owls don't decide to attack people out of the blue if ever. It was in the early hours of the morning. No way, Kathleen was outside bothering an owl at that time of night. She likely confronted Michael at the pool about what she'd just seen on his computer and threatened divorce. He likely became enraged and started attacking her. No doubt, she ran, trying to get to the house to lock the door.

At no point in the documentary does he seek justice for his wife. He doesn't seem to want to know what happened to her...because he knew exactly what happened. Anyone else would be seeking the truth. Also his hold over his adopted daughters is almost cult like

Why does no one ever suspect that the stairs were the weapon, 2 examples: they are arguing, he walks up the stairs she follows, he turns and pushes her, she falls backwards hits her head. He then comes down steps over her, foot print explained, then continues to hit her head repeatedly againt the step. Or they are arguing at the bottom of the stairs, in the hallway he pushes her, again she falls backwards hits her head and then he repeatedly hits her head against the stairs or wall. Wood explains blunt force trauma without fracture. Why does there have to be a hand held weapon? If someone grabs your head and begins hitting it against a stair, may also explain clump of her hair in her hand, trying to get him to let go, grabbing at the hand on your head, and pulling out a clump of hair. Lots of ways the the stairs could be the 'weapon'. Owl feathers: picked up from resting your head on an out door pool lounger, as well as the twig.
Repeated blunt force trauma by the stairs would more likely to cause fractures than lacerations. In fact, wooden stairs doesn't explain lacerations at all. It needs to have a realy sharp edge and stairs usually don't

Yeah and 758 hours of Duane Deaver being a corrupt liar with a poor sense of due diligence, who has no scientific process to acquiring evidence or ensuring it is of a reasonable standard before contributing to someone being locked away for something they didn't do... more than once.

You hear about this lady who died when she fell down the stairs and think ok that's a sad thing to happen, but then when you find out about the extent of her injuries you go 'something's not right here'
There are some actual proven staircase falls that ended in insane injuries. There was a 93-year-old woman in Scotland who fell off a chairlift and the and her injuries were so bad doctors thought she had been attacked with a machete. Her name was Catherine Scullion if you want to look it up, there is a photo of the scene with a lot of blood on the ground where she was found.

He divorced his first wife. She just recently died at 78 from a heart attack. The family friend died from a rare disorder and he adopted her daughters.

I think he killed her BUT I don’t think he had a fair trial or that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt he did it. Regardless-the way he comes across, the initial 911 calls-it’s like bad acting. This is a guy who was in Nam and had seen much worse. Why didn’t he give her CPR or mouth to mouth-he’d been trained in it? Why was the blood dry? He killed her earlier in the evening probably after an argument and then later called it in.

Owl theory: She was hit with a sturdy branch. They found fragments of wood and microscopic owl feather (micoroscopic owl feathers could easily have been on the branch since Owls perch on branches. If you think of the shape of branches, they are irregular and can have a trident formation. I believe he hit her with a heavy branch (something that could easily be disposed of; hid initially and then disposed of via burning or even just driving a distance and disposing of it). Because she had neck injuries that show great pressure to the neck - something an owl could NOT possibly do, the fact that there was another staircase death with him involved. To me says not an owl. If she was attached by an owl wouldn’t she have tried to call for Micheal while it was happening and while she was outside - I’de be screaming bloody murder! And the a fact that it was 50 degrees and he still was sitting outside smoking a pipe at 2 in the morning in shorts and a T-shirt. So many other pieces of evidence rule out that she was attacked by an owl. It doesn’t make sense. Also, sound carries an enormous distance at that time if night/morning, he would or should have heard something. I can’t believe she would have been silent during the attack and then just went inside without calling out to him.

Regarding the neck injury, she did have a known neck injury just months before her death. I think including this in the case is so odd because her neck would definitely still be healing.

This is exactly what I thought of when they started talking about the owl theory. They said the wounds on the two women's heads looked similar. Did an owl get BOTH of them??? I doubt it.

It was not the same way. One had a medical condition, and in effect had a stroke. Her bleeding was internal.
They just happened to be located at a similar spot in their houses. Coincidences do happen, we as stupid humans think they mean something, when in fact it's just random.

I grew up in Durham,NC and remember when I was a kid this case was everywhere. I didn't really understand the hoopla bc I was like seven or eight. Once I got older and understood the story it was always so eerie to drive by the Peterson's mansion

Currently watching the HBO dramatization of this. I was iffy of Michael when the Netflix doc came out. Kendalls vid comes out and then I’m convinced he’s guilty. Now the HBO dramatization of it came out I’m 1000% certain Michael did it (it’s pretty obvious from the beginning) . I can’t believe he’s a free man now.
He's free because the prosecution shot for too high of a charge and faked evidence (primarily Duane Deaver's testimony but there were other hinky things) to win. They should have gone for a lesser murder charge or voluntary manslaughter. Then they wouldn't have needed Deaver's faked evidence and Michael Peterson would still be in prison.
He killed her as she was going upstairs because this is when he would have lost ultimate control, based on what they fought about a few mins. before.
This was such an open and close case. There's no way all that damage happened in a fall. Once head trauma occurs with a broken neck, the body goes limp, it does NOT bounce around like a pinball.
Still have to prove that someone actually did it with good evidence not just circumstantial

Its absolutely unreal that they let him out after 2 women died the same way....this is absolutely insane and sickening....so sad for the victims families 😢
The thing about this story that always astounded me is that the investigators and blood spatter analyst could never conceive of any other way for him to have injured his wife than using an instrument to beat her with, and the spatter evidence did not support that hypothesis. However, it is clear she died of blunt force head trauma. This was done by him grabbing her by her hair and beating her head on the stairs and landing. He did beat her to death. He just didn't use any blunt instrument. He just grabbed her head and beat it into the stairs. If you put that puzzle piece into the narrative, it all suddenly makes sense how he did it, and why there was no weapon. Can't believe the investigators never even conceived of this scenario, in any analyses or documentary I've watched about this case.
They did consider this. The problem was there was no skull fractures, brain bleeding, edema, etc. Rudolf literally pulled out over 250 cases where there was a beating death and ALL had some form of skull fracture.
If Michael had done this in the way you said, he would have fractured her skull somewhere. The stairs are too solid for them not to. Her only injuries were lacerations to the skull. That's why they needed something somewhat solid yet HOLLOW to inflict the injuries.. . Hence, the blowpoke.
How do you beat someone to death over the head using ANYTHING and NOT fracture their skull?
I think he just let her bleed out.

They needed "Dexter" to explain the blood spatter! I think it is possible he broke her hyoid while holding her neck and later her hair to bang her head against the stairs, maybe just scraping the stair above to cause the lacerations. Even if skull fracture is typical in such cases, he could have banged her head with less force because he was in a rage and was just trying to "make her shut up".

The thing about the blow poke is that it wasn’t there during the search, but magically shows up during trial.
The murder weapon blow poke could easily have been disposed of, and then another purchased at an antique store (they’re pretty common finds where I live, at least) and then the “decoy” blow poke was presented as evidence. There’s nothing proving it’s the same blow poke.
I thought it was said that these were specifically made for the families by Kathleen's sister Margaret. She had 4 made. So maybe there are lots of similar ones, but these 4 were unique?!

Blowpokes are made of brass which is a very hard metal. A blowpoke would not make marks on a scalp that look like the talons of a bardowl and would likely cause a skull fracture. If the autopsy photos are accrate then the theory of a blowpoke is out.
After watching the dramatized and non censored depiction of her death (on HBO MAX) where michael throws hers her downwards and beats her head up against the stairs and chokes her- it it is in my opinion 100% how that took place.

@@blob2092 if they were sitting outside owl feather and twig could have been from lawn furniture or even debris off the steps from someone’s shoes tracking it in. Also owl feathers in some cases are used in pillow stuffing for down pillows.

Just a thought…Kathleen herself could have been the one to print out the messages between Michael and the escort.. i think that would be a reasonable thing to do if you find out you’re being cheated on..print out the evidence to confront your partner, or even print them out and put them in his desk so he could find them himself.. idk.. so many variables🤦🏻♀️🦉

The blow poke was actually found before & was even photographed, it was in the prosecutor’s file after…but they didn’t make that public 😒
I don’t believe in the owl theory I feel like since she was outside the owl feathers/twig in her hair were just because she was spending time out. If you think about it if it was the owl attacking her it would have left a lot more feathers behind that aren’t microscopic.

I know this case well. What I can never get past is that statistically speaking 1 man having 2 women in his life meet an untimely end in nearly the exact same way is improbable. I have a theory that his first wife did die in a tragic accident but the second was almost replicated, like he was stuck on that first death and either had the idea to make it look similar as it looked accidental OR he simply pushed the first one, the second one but she didn't die right away so he had to finish her off with the weapon.
In all honesty I really think the owl theory is true. If you think about it, she had a clump of her hair in her hands, pulled from the root. If an owl was attacking your head, you would do anything you could to get it off, if you felt something you thought was the owl you would yank it as hard as you could. This explains why she had her hair in her hand, if he was attacking her with that stick then she wouldn't pull at her head, she would try defending it. Also, the owl feathers and branch in her hair is literally inexpiable, owl feathers in your hair would make sense if an owl was attacking your head.
Also, you can say it's a coincidence that both his wives died the same way but for one isn't it a coincidence that her head markings matched an owls? Also this would also make it different than his first wife, people's spouses dying like this is very rare but it still happens. And owl attacks are rare but that doesn't mean they don't happen. His timing was off by an hour but honestly recalling time can be hard for some people and there's the whole thing of why didn't he hear her screaming but if I'm not wrong his daughters were in that house and didn't hear any either. It's a common misconception that EVERYONE would scream while being attacked as some people could be so scared they lose their ability to do so. I understand that the owl theory is a stretch but the owl feathers and clump of hair are damning.
@@NobodyUndefined Or, as someone commented elsewhere, the feathers could have been tracked inside on people's shoes and been on the floor where she hit her head/whatever implement she was hit with. That would explain both the microscopic owl feathers and wood tracings. It's at least as plausible as an owl attack that only left microscopic evidence.

It's easy to believe he did it, but my wife was attacked by an owl in Atlanta many years ago She ended up needing 32 stitches in her head. Once I found the owl theory I was shook cause the wounds looked like my wife head.

@@molly5292 I don't have any feelings one way or another about the owl theory, but the wounds from one attack vs. another attack by the same type of animal can be different in severity. Not to mention different species of owls and how aggressive they might be, or even aggression levels within the same species. I've seen some pics online of people's wounds after owl attacks and they can be incredibly terrible.
That said, it's a reach in this case, and usually the more simple explanation is the more likely, i.e. the husband did it.

You can always fabricate evidence that someone is guilty, you can hardly produce evidence of innocence if the police want you to be guilty.

How was there ONLY microscopic evidence of A N Y animal attack with fur or feathers this is unlikely.
Birds only extend to the max when flying, hovering etc. If a a bird is attacking they won't have their wings completely extended. In a house they won't be able to fly keeping their wings straight either, because there isn't a sufficient draft.
Just check a falcon or owl catching prey or how they do to eat meats or carcass. Or check any video of birds attacking.
If they get tangled in the hair they can't fly as easy

I trained owls, I’ve been the victim of a grumpy owl and they cause serious damage. An owl attack would cause such a commotion she would be screaming and it’s a 1 in a million series of events.
It’s a 1 in a million series of events but it’s still possible, you have to be dead sure without a shadow of a doubt that someone has committed that crime before you lash them in prison and throw away the key. I just don’t think there was enough evidence for or against, so I’m still very undecided on if he did it or not

I believe the theory is the owl swooped down and grabbed her thinking she was prey while outside the home then she ran inside to escape. I think he killed her but owls are sons of bitches and can do some damage. Lost one of my sweet free range chickens to one a few days ago. The only bright white one of the bunch so she was easiest to see in the dark..... swooped right down and grabbed her and flew off without leaving a trace. A woman’s hair could easily be mistaken as the fur of prey to an owl, especially at night. The other murder being connected to him is what makes that theory unbelievable to me.

Even if she was attacked outside, it still doesn’t explain the amount of blood at the scene. Considering the evidence the theory seems random to me. Owls can be aggressive but in this instance it seems very unlikely that an owl had anything to do with it.

I don't think she fell down the stairs, but I disagree. I lost so much blood from a VERY minor head injury that I fainted. There was so much blood...I can't even explain it. The head injuries she had are gonna make you bleed A LOT. Again, I don't think she fell down the stairs, but i could see that much blood from that situation.

You can't say there's no way. If you hit your head or different parts of your body in the right way you will cause a massive amount of bleeding. Is it more likely to be something else probably but you can't just discount staircase because you don't want to believe it's possible to cause that much damage. Trust me falls down the stairs don't look like they do in the movies.
I watched a friend at a party almost die once when a deck railing broke and he fell 15 feet onto rocks/concrete right on the back of his neck (had to wear a metal spine support device for like 2 years) and there was NOT EVEN CLOSE to this amount of blood.
This is just sick. This was no damn accident

I was about to say!!! When I was in 5th grade my parents were doing the annual cleaning of the outside of our house and it’s 2 stories and the wooden ladder broke from under my mom and she fell from the 2nd story. She broke a large clay planter pot with her head and I remember when my dad ran inside to call 911 and I went outside to see what happened my mom was laying still but there was so puddle of blood no large gashes that needed sutures just permanent internal injuries and such like 6 herniated discs in her thoracic and a bad concussion. She has to undergo a procedure yearly to get injections on her spine but there was no puddle of blood like you’d assume there would be .... and she broke a clay planter and hit the concrete driveway . A similar thing happened to our neighbor up the road who unfortunately passed away but there wasn’t a large puddle of external blood ... she died of internal brain bleeding when her head hit the concrete. I’ve always thought this case was suspicious it’s sickening but also very clear she did not just die from a fall down the stairs - it’s possible to die but there wouldn’t be that much blood
My dad fell head first down unfinished stairs this last summer. About 22 narrow stairs, with sharp edges and hit his head on the bottom doorframe at the end of the stairs. Similar layout to this. He was in a coma for 4 days and the internal bleeding made his head swell up unimaginable. He broke his nose and arm, and yet there were only two small drips of blood from his nose. He survived and is doing well but is a little funnier. The fact that was so traumatic and yet there was almost NO blood is bright red flags to how both of these staircase murders looked. How sick that he is free.
I have fallen and cut my head and yes there was a lot of blood but it accumulated over minutes and dripped down. There would have been no splatter if I had fallen in a stairwell because the blood wasn't just suddenly there to be splashed on the walls. The blood would have poured out after she had landed. No possibility of splatter.

As an attorney, I appreciate your excellent use of the facts and circumstances of this puzzling, fascinating case and yes, I do tend to agree with your final assessment of the conclusion. The prosecution screwed up the evidence so guilt beyond a reasonable doubt wouldn't have been possible but the facts add up to 'guilty' and the Alford plea was appropriate.

Michael’s son flat out says in the documentary that if his dad were to tell him he killed her, he would run over and help him cover it up. Pile that on with the son already being there before paramedics, the blood being dry, the blood smear on Michael’s pants, and the shoe prints, is enough to scream suspicion.
And literally anyone walking into their house late at night and stumbling upon that gruesome scene wouldn’t have automatically assumed that their wife fell down the stairs like Michael did in the 911 call. Show those crime scene photos to anyone without any context and they would say that that person was attacked, not, “oh looks like she fell down those stairs.”
YES! this is what I keep saying! If I found my boyfriend like that absolutely covered in blood with those wounds I would automatically think there was an intruder in the house that had clubbed him to death, not that he’d fallen down a few steps.

And the first Michael says in the 911 call is she had an accident, that’s very specific for someone in shock. If you’re genuinely in shock you just describe what you see and not how it happened
My theory: the printed copies of his messages with the escort could've been printed off by Kathleen. Hear me out. She found out and wanted to confront him so she printed it off and stashed it in his drawers so he'd find it and know that she knows. This would make it so she didn't have to confront him face to face but still kinda confronts him. He finds them and then he was worried that she was going to leave and that would leave him financially unstable. So he either panicked and killed her for the life insurance or he planned it for the life insurance money. Probably attacked her with the fire poker thing which could've easily had wood and owl feathers on it from the fire place/wood pile. Feathers and wood are common there. It makes sense.

Someone pointed out that his actions are theorised to be premeditated because of how similar Elizabeth's and Kathleen's murders were. I agree and that changes my theory slightly.
He could've found the affair conversations she printed out and decided she needed to go for financial reasons mentioned in the video and in my comment. He then most likely looked at Elizabeth's murder as being a template because of how successful he was. He got away with it and hardly anyone questioned it at all. He then couldve planned to kill Kathleen in a similar way because he thought he'd get away with it like he did with Elizabeth. He knew it couldn't be identical so he changed the stories up a little however the way in which he killed the two was quite similar. This indicates that he wanted to recycle the method because it was so successful.

One thing I'm one hundred percent in agreement with is that the Netflix documentary needed some serious editing. It could've been an all time great True Crime Doc if they had paired it down to 3-4 episodes.

I was so torn on this case (likely because of the bias of the documentary and I play devils advocate a lot) but the moment I knew it was him was Cathleen’s sister was initially on his side and just days after her death she was in his study talking to him. They were looking out the window over the pool and she noticed ALL of the patio furniture was put up for the winter and covered in leaves. There was NO seating around the pool and he claimed to have been hanging out there all night for hours SITTING by the pool….. just a few days later when the documentary crew showed up to film he MOVED THE FURNITURE OUT BY THE POOL. She said in that moment she was filled with fear realizing what he had done.
I was a bit torn until I heard about the other person falling too… there’s no way that’s coincidence!

I say this because if you look in the bottom right of the picture of Kathleen's body, there is a WHOLE roll of paper towels with blood on them. When I read into the owl theory, the lawyer (I think?) who brought up the theory was saying a jogger had been attacked recently before Kathleen died. I was very surprised. But I don’t remember where I read it!

Okay the “Owl Theory”- my argument against it. So barn owls were common in that area and they had been sitting outside at night. We have lots of birds around our house and any wind will get them along with sticks, dirt and everything organic all over everything. What if A) she was sitting outside and laid against the backrest of a chair that had some twigs and feathers stuck in it and they got caught in her hair? Or B) what if Michael beat her with an object that was outside and had a few bird feathers and other organic matter on it? I would believe those more than an owl attacking her and ripping her skull to shreds. 🤷🏻♀️

Also, I think the problem with this case is our unwillingness to admit we just don't know what happened. Does he seem like he COULD be a killer? Sure. Is there a chance he's not? Yes. We may just never know. We are getting stuck because we keep wanting to assume we know things we don't.

She may have likely fallen down when he attacked her with her head parallel to the stairs, he grabs the sides of her head and smashes it against the edge of the stairs. That's how I also think she ended up with her own hair in her hands, she was also grabbing on trying to fight him off.

@@emelphick4742 I've been reading these comments and what you say makes the most sense to me too. It seems like she would've been trying to protect her head with her hands during his assault. If the blows were so hard to open up her scalp like the way they showed, then the hair maybe would've just come right out. I'm kind of stuck on the owl feathers though. Where do you think they came from?
I appreciate and love everything that Kendall produces, but NGL sometimes I just have her in the background talking away espeically when I'm stressed out, because her voice is just so dang soothing

@@nataliazenkova5774 It's just a saying. Two people involved in the same exact freak accident death in two separate instances related to the same husband is all but impossible. But it's certain the defense lawyer will argue it's plausible.
Earlier in the day she was decorating outside. She was working in a tree. That is where they think the feathers and wood came from. Plus his son recently said he killed her. He was with his mother Patricia the day she died. She had a heart attack and he didn't call 911. Her son came over and called. He said Peterson just watched her die and waited like 2 hours
