Thank you for sharing this video for last 4 years am been watching videos about how to make tandoor oven am so obsessed about tandoor this is the best tandoor to make roti or naan i will be making mine soon inshallah looks like you live in Yorkshire Bradford Thank you 🙏 😁😁🇬🇧
Good video, I used the same dustbin and pots and mine is identical, sprayed the exterior with heat resistant matt black paint from Screwfix, I’m going to weld four supermarket trolley wheels to the bottom for easy transportation. All in all cost around £100 to build. I found using wood left soot on the inside of the Tandoor, so used a weed burner to start the charcoal off and it worked fine. Also treated mine with a water/salt solution and wiped with a soft rag now and then, the wider neck pots make it easier for naans too.
Looks good - Any chance f an update. I was wondering if it's still in use as I would have imagined the terracotta pots would have eventually cracked due to the constant changes in temperature. Cheers Ken
Hi greetings from Normandy , Great vid Sanj very well executed and looks very professional , i have been dithering for ages about doing one i have my pizza oven which is great but i have always wanted one of these but there are a lot of vids that are more about the person who is doing them , this vid is what i have been looking for i will make it your way , well done great job and thanks.
Thank you Nigle for your kind comments! Yes please do have a go at making this! And if you have any questions drop me a message! Wishing you the very best! Sanj
Excellent video -few questions 1. What is the best way to repair the tericotta pot in the event of a crack? 2 What is the make of fire cement and does It stick to the metallic bin ? 3 . What flour make and type (plain or self raising) you use for making nan ? 4 , What is the wall temperature for making nan bread? 5 , Will you be doing a video on making nan and rotis ?
At last a well planned proper job ....well done! perhaps hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5) will be better than cement at bottom....cement will crack badly. why haven't you done a video using the tandoor?
So happy i found this, thank you! I was so intimidated for ages to build by own but you made it look so easy with very simple materials :) Next project 100%. Subbed :D
Real_jungle_King hey! Thanks for your message. So the last bit is where I am conditioning the walls of the tandoor by using yoghurt and mustard oil, you apply this to the walls so that this is taken in so that the clays pots are then ready to allow your naans to stick and peel off easily, this treatment is done to all tandoors. Hope this helps
J Maudsley lol no problem at all! I make and sell them also so if in the Uk give me a shout if you do want to buy! However have a go at making one! It’s great fun!
@@cookingwithsanj1251 Much better idea. How much do you sell for? I'm moving house at the moment but would be good to go when moved into the new place.
matthew lawson very hot lol the outside of the bin was very hot to the touch so don’t ever touch it but it was not glowing hot! The insulation keeps the heat in so the inside is glowing hot. Hope that helps 😊
@@cookingwithsanj1251 would it be safer to get a larger size outer bin so there is more room for insulation? Would a clay outer bin also work instead of metal?
Hi Sank, great video, I am in the process of ordering items to build. Just one question, what would be your thoughts on using vermiculite on the base covered with fire cement rather than bricks?
Hi! Yes you can but be careful as let’s say if your skewer fell into the tandoor it will make a whole so yes by all means try it but I would say bricks or vermiculite bricks would be better also bricks gives weight to the tandoor so no chance of it being knocked over by accident, hope this helps
RKP 241111 yes I do it’s to allow the air to keep coming in to keep the charcoal hot you can close it if you feel the tandoor is hot enough or to lower the temp
Hey Sanj, great video very easy to follow, I did everything you showed turned out well, only thing when heating initially with wood, the top pot cracked and a piece fell off, also the inside was covered in soot, and was coming onto the nans, could I just plaster with fire cement? What would you suggest?
Hi Sanj, cool video, would you please give us an update? some folks say they crack after a while , is that right? I am also in a process of making one but with a little different. I am using 55 gallon drum and 2 22 in. pot . I am waiting for my clay to arrive to use clay instate of cement. Thanks.
Yes there will be hairline cracks any tandoor will get them, but you just fill them up with fire cement or clay.. hope this helps! And well done on having a go at making it!
Hey Sanj, great vid 👍. One question - any particular reason why you cut the bottom off the flower pot and then use fire cement to place coals on top of? Why not use the base of flower pot as a whole pot and place coals on that instead of cutting off bottom and using fire cement? Genuinely interested in your reason as going to make one and looking for advice 😀 Cheers
Hi Gen! Aww thank for your kind comments, yes there is a reason for cutting off the bottom of the pot, if the bottom of the pot got too hot it could crack the base and the cracks would travel up the walls of the pot, you will get hairline cracks in the walls every tandoor does however the heat of the coals directly on the base of the pot would crack the bottom of it, hence if you use bricks and fire cement or fire bricks and cut the bottom of the pot it means there is no risk of the pot being damaged as the bricks and fire cement can deal with the heat and hold the heat which will keep your tandoor hot! Any more questions please just give me a shout! All the very best! 😊
Hi, just watched this, looks great. 2 Questions, do you have to have the little hole down below and can I use A glazed pot outside rather than metal bin. Loved your video
Yes you have to have the hole at the bottom to allow for airflow otherwise the tandoor will not work well at all, yes you can use as glazed pot also, hope this helps!
Brother, you can but it will make it mega heavy, if your not going to be moving it then use sand but don’t use soil, use kiln dried sand and not building sand.. hope this helps, I’ve also made a big one oils drum size and they do get heavy I put wheels on that one though
@@cookingwithsanj1251 Brother, I bought two large terracotta pot did everything the way you did but unfortunately the top pot cracked in many places after first use.
@@khanos73 hey brother! Is it hairline cracks? If they are hairline cracks you will get them, but if it is very big cracks or if the pot has broken then it could be due to the sand, but you should not get big cracks only hairline cracks which are normal

Amazing job .. but I would recommend to put a layer of non toxic clay/ utensil grade clay . The pot and cement would contain harmful chemical or lead
