What's worse about Wendigo possession is unlike most other demonic possessions is the person is completely aware during every other part of the process-I even read a story about a woman who had been cursed and unknowingly eaten human flesh (her curser had been feeding her) for quite some time flung herself in a summer fire because she felt so cold and knew something was wrong. The spirit doesn't take full control to the point the mind doesn't know what has happened or will know-it becomes you and you become it. A similar spirit situation is the Weshuge-someone who after a vision quest let an animal spirit guide get too much power over them. Still aware, still cannibalistic, but can eat other food and with difficulty CAN have their mind brought back. In that case it was accidental. Never ask for too much power is the lesson with that one.

For anyone interested, there is in fact an anime with this kind of premise, which is based on an unfinished Japanese light novel. It's called Ghost Hunt. With the best part being that all these methods are, in fact, viable and work, depending on what sort of spirit you're dealing with. And there is one spirit you can't exorcise that the group encounters.
I do find it really interesting that these exorcisms... mostly involve, essentially, giving someone some care and attention. Clean up the room and ask them what's wrong Get them clean and bathed, surrounded by people trying to help them. You can really see how these would work, whether its a real spirit possessing them. Or someone suffering some kind of menral breakdown
on the topic i remember a story that i think belonged to the islamic folklore, about a woman being unattended by her husband, she made a plan with other people, she would act like a crazy person and when her husband get worried and call a priest to check what's happening they tell him that she was possessed and he has to do some things to drive away the djin, buy jewelry and clothes, good food, treat her well and so on, this kept going for sometime and then she calmed down but he was warned that this happen because of his attitude toward her and the djin may come back again, so solving their marital dispute. i likely missed or got wrong some dettails but you get the gist.
As someone who studies islamic exorcism to become a Raqiyah (an islamic exorcist), your summary is actually really great! I would just like to add that Jinn, despite being relatively easy to exorcise, are extremely dangerous. The possessions often end up causing psychological and even physical trauma and plagues, and they are often very angry. Sometimes they can even be manifested by some humans to hurt other humans, which makes certain possessions very tricky to navigate. Some other forms of ruqyah include reading quran over water and certain oils and consuming these products, usually in the case were sorcery is involved. The names ifrit and shaytan are mostly synonymous, with shaytan being more religiously oriented and ifrit being more based in pop culture. Otherwise, everything you said was excellent and I'm proud to be a Muslim theorist! But yeah ruqyah is pronounced ru-k-yah, not ru-ka-yaah, but otherwise all good :D
I wanted to post something similar. Like he was right but the fear factor was very downplayed. I've been wanting a horror spirit or monster that inspires THIS kind of fear. It doesn't have to be this exactly, just something so revered that people don't even want to say it. Like Voldemort, but people actually avoid saying it. I think I'm a fairly rational person and I can say I'd exhaust every option before considering exorcism, but I do believe these things exist. It was cool to see it mentioned but I was a bit antsy every time he said it 😂
@lulufan100 I'm studying exorcism obviously but I'm also studying social science to specialize in psychology. The more I learn about both the more it becomes extremely evident that one must know which kind of problem they're facing; spiritual or psychological. So if someone tries to exorcise mental illness then obviously it's not gonna work, but the opposite is true as well, and this is why I look at all options, medical, psychological and spiritual, equally. Another thing, I don't know if it's a great idea to make a movie about the jinn or the wendigo without either horribly offending someone (humans) or horribly angering someone (spirit). But yeah love your thoughts on the matter.
@@princessjuliana7309 I think since the knowledge and fear of them is largely cultural/faith based, it would be hard to put in a film. You'd have all this backstory crammed into a 1 to 2 hour film which would either lose people or not do it justice. And while I like representation, I'm fine with people skipping this part. I wouldn't even see the film if it were to come out considering I refuse to even type its name. I feel weird about movies using people's faith, anyway. The Conjuring movies don't scare me because I have to suspend my disbelief for not only a demon but for the solution and I often wonder what Christians and Catholics think of them. I had a roommate who didn't seem to mind them and I haven't seen any backlash in the news against them. I feel like that would happen in our community if the movie sucked, made stuff up, or seemed like it was mocking us. The first Exorcist was just terrifying, but they played the Adhan at the beginning so that helped. I really liked how they had the priest be the most skeptical, that kept it grounded in reality for me and made it all the more scary. I thought they left the ending ambiguous as to whether or not the exorcism worked, too. His human and faith struggles could be relatable to anybody even though he was Catholic. I think horror needs to be relatable for it to work. The Wendigo is also a touchy subject because I feel like people are either over it or the studios will make it into a generic monster. Maybe it could work if they worked with First Nation people who wanted to do it. It would be interesting to see it from their point of view. If not, I'd rather just read about it on my own. It was really neat running into another Muslim theorist and I was not expecting that on this type of video 😁
@lulufan100 oh absolutely and I think that not everything should be represented. Like, yeah, you have stories like Aladdin which are less religious and more pop culture, but it only works in a fantasy setting. Horror would make the target audience (presumably muslims) very uncomfortable, and it's just not worth it at all. Maybe stuff from culture can be cool since they're just stories to us, but religion is not very easy to maneuver at all, even for me as a Muslim who likes to write islamic inspired things.
@@Storm-bv7pcit isnt considered a symbol but a common representation when talking about islam as it is not an official symbol but a design adopted by the people in istanbul
Having a Yurei/Yokai themed Exorcist movie would be really rad. Onmyoji (shinto exorcists) have been very much romanticized and fantasized in modern media. A more grounded, faith-based version without all the magic could be interesting, especially exploring their historical relevance.
Another thing to note, if you’re ever on a reservation or in the woods by native or sacred land, DO NOT SPEAK THEIR NAMES. To them it would be like you’re trying to get their attention, especially skin walkers. Even talking about them can draw them towards you.

I love seeing accurate representation of the wendigos here! The wendigo is one of my favorite bits of folklore from where I’m from and it was also nice seeing representation from Japan as someone who’s also Japanese!
We definitely need more monster/ghost movies based on these spirits, I watched “The Weird Origins of The Wendigo” and the story the guy tells us from the 1800’s… Yeah…that’s definitely worth it to make a movie about the Wendigo.
I always enjoy hearing religious stories. I'm an atheist, but I believe that humanity as a whole needs faith, and it's fascinating hearing what good and evil looks like in other cultures.
Wow, never expected Matt to cover Cree mythology! As Cree myself, I think he did a pretty good job. I just wish he mentioned how uncomfortable most of us in the culture get when someone uses the name of the creature. I dont expect him to refrain from using it as hes not part of the culture, just wish he at least acknowledged that its a taboo. Otherwise, lovely episode as usual.
Please do more of these videos!!! I love learning about different cultures’ beliefs surrounding spirits and how they interact with the world in different ways. Whether it be guardian angels, haunting, curses, possession, I love hearing about it. I find it so interesting!!!
The way I CHEERED at the monster reveal They are honestly just… some of the most horrifying things. The twisting and devouring of humanity, both your own and others, the inescapable nature of it, how it is driven by desperation and need, the metaphor for how the acts can warp a person, etc.
I need a film theory on the movie Talk to Me!! After watching it I have so many questions and Matt is the only one I trust for these answers!! Hoping to see a breakdown on the LOREEEE in this movie as I religiously watch almost every video from each of the theory channels. Can’t wait to see more amazing stuff from y’all !
Can we get maybe another part or two for this, going over some more possible possession and exorcism processes cause this video was extremely entertaining plus getting to hear about these other cultures like this is extremely fun.
The idea that future Exorcist could take inspiration from other cultures and their spirits is something that has me extremely excited, especially if they put the effort and make it all extremely faithful and accurate
The Wendigo is probably one of my favorite spirit/monsters when it comes to myths and legend's. Thought it's to bad that it's been miss appropriated so much, both in that it changes a group of peoples culture to something very different than what it actually is and that it sucks that the whole deer skull monster we usually see with wendigos is bad, because it looks like a really awesome monster.
I'm glad Until Dawn gets wendigos right. It's only one game, but it's popular and is a good example of how they should be portrayed (with the usual amounts of artistic license). I'm still waiting on the "grows in proportion to what it eats" thing turning a wendigo into a kaiju equivalent. That would make a good movie.
yeah, feel you, there is a reason why tht design caught on that well . . . the truely unforgivable thing though is not changing the monsters appearance, but its essence. Making just a yeti that eats humans out of it destroys what the wendigo is about, kills all the nuance and what makes is so so scary. The deerhead makes kinda sense, its a pray animal so having that hunt you is scaryer for the broken trust in a way just how the wendigo turns your fellow men into a threat you cant easely spot. deception as in calling with a loved ones voice does belong to the wendigos nature after all
Yeah, I feel like pop culture mixed up the windy boi and the not-deer. It's a shame, because they're both very cool and terrifying creatures, and I don't see hardly anyone talk about the not-deer as they're not very well known outside of the Appalachian mountain region.
As someone who used to watch lots of Something Scary episodes on Snarled watching this episode reminded me how much I enjoyed watching those stories, It would be nice to hear about other cultures' beliefs and spirits!

So glad a very popular YT channel like yours is educating viewers on what wendigos really are because like you said, people keep misrepresenting them and TikTok is not helping (although TikTok is more obssessed with skinwalkers and they also misrepresent them a lot). I'm not even a Native American.
You know, the anime Ghost Hunt is about a group of ghost hunters solving paranormal mysteries that feature a group rooted in science, a person ordained by a catholic church, a monk (buddhist), a shinto priestess, and a medium. This is really cool if you’re interested in this stuff.
Film theory, thank you so much for that quick disclaimer on how you were approaching this faith-based topic. I just really appreciate the candor and respect you took a minute to show.
I'm a Norse Pagan and Cherokee descendant as somebody who is half Cherokee. I like to say that your research on the wendigo was very good, but Norse mythology also has some demonic entities that would make pretty good final bosses for this franchise. Edit I'm also half Creek, according to my grandmother and she said when she was young they had to deal with a wendigo.
I think one of the most necessary exorcisms comes from film (and art), itself. ^_^ We need to encounter our demons through the magic circle of cinema in order to integrate them harmlessly into our waking persona. At least, that's one of the reasons I make films.
A well researched video. Exorcisms and stuff scare me since I saw a lot of horror movies as a kid but I find religion and folklore so fascinating. Great video!
Honestly MatPat going on a ghost hunting trip with Sam and Colby would be really funny because he would be pointing out facts in every. single. place. imaginable. The one about the giant meatball exploding, and the scene where it intakes large amount of water molecules in the atmosphere to create those wave of foods. I’m genuinely curious as to the consequences those two could have on the planet as a whole.
My childhood! Ah yes, a theory about Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs would be great. Plus, I can't wait to hear MatPat make jokes about the voice cast (like the fact that Bill Hader, who voiced our beloved Flint Lockwood, is now famous for his role as Barry) and coming out on top with a theory that will be either dark or hopeful..
I'm really glad Mat did some in depth research on these so people can learn a little bit about it, especially Wendigo. Until Dawn did a surprisingly good job but a lot of other media portrayals focus on what makes for good entertainment instead of accuracy. I was just watching Halloween Wars this year, where they used the skeletal figure with antlers to represent the Wendigo. (They also said something about it being part tree?) But when someone made the comment "What is a Wendigo without antlers?" All I could think was "Correct."
I heard an interpretation that it looked like a humanoid deer (without antlers) that was rotten and decomposing, that also stood on its hind legs. Is this right or am I wrong?
@@Jumpyman_thegamerYTHii so if your still wondering about this they are called "Not deer." They smell of rotting flesh and they do stand on their hind legs. If you have any more questions just ask!!

I remember reading a story on the wendigo. A woman encountered a wendigo, so in order to survive the encounter she decided to treat the creature as it were her grandparent. Eventually when her brother had gotten back from hunting and he saw the creature his sister pulled him aside and told him her plan. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details after the start, but eventually the wendigo asks the woman to make a sweat lodge and the man to get a constant stream of wood. I don't remember how long the story said it was inside, but eventually an old man emerged from the lodge and coughed out a frozen heart and instructed the girl to toss it in the fireplace. At least I think that how the story went, it's been at least an actual ten years since I last read that story
Matpat: “ if you encounter a wendigo in your dreams it can follow you into the real world.” Me: “no mom i can’t go to sleep tonight! I will get possessed!”
There is ONLY one way to deal with people who say they got a demon inside them. Punch Punch Punch Punch Until they say "Ok, Ok! I am an adult! I go back to work! Just stop punching me!"
Hey MatPat love the theories they help me get through work and I appreciate all you guys do. But I haven't seen any theories on supernatural, it's one of my favorite TV shows and I'm sure with 15 seasons there's so much you could find to theorize about.
I definitely think you're right. The Wendigo would be an interesting final boss. These movies have so much based around faith/religion that it would be interesting to see one where there's a real world mental disorder equivalent that could be the explanation behind it. You'd be able to watch the film not knowing whether or not the person/people are truly possessed or suffering from a mental disorder. They could even touch on the morality of exorcisms and how they've been used in the past wrongfully/unknowingly, due to lack of knowledge, on people who were suffering from mental illness, just making their issues worse. It'd definitely be an interesting plotline for a story in this universe, while also bring some new things to the table like the new film is with multiple faith's rather than just one.
As a muslim. You did you work. But. You missed few things: 1_ It takes a strongly religious healer to talk to an entity and to fire it away. 2- yes. Many of the Jinns attack humans as a revenge from a human who hurt them and yes they just want to be heard. 3- jinns are dangerous only when they fall in love with a human. They stick to the human and refuse to leave. 4- most of exorcism sessions have a relation to jealously. 5- Allah said clearly in Quran. Ppl who use witch craft are no longer muslims. Even if they remained practicing Islam because : you ask help from an entity to hurt humans which means Forbidden . But ppl do it anyway. 6- Witch craft has few goals: to make you sick and spend the rest of your life in bed with no known sickness. To stop a woman from finding true love and marrying or have children . To stop a person from having any successful business or even finish school. And the most common one is to separate married couple and cause hate and divorce. 7- exorcism takes a lot of power and it leaves the cursed broken. Physical healing takes time. So . Yes. May Allah protect us all.
I think a good idea for a game theory during October would be for Phasmophobia and trying to find the hidden story in the game! Or maybe seeing how many of the ghosts are close to their real life representation
Can you do a Learning with Pibby theory? It’s recently been announced that the show most likely won’t be green-lit, and I think everyone just wants some new Pibby related content to cope with the fact that this amazing concept will probably never come to fruition.

There's also Mononoke (and the Bake Neko episodes of Ayakashi), although that mainly focuses on Shinto exorcisms.
Working to get my own shikigami rn! Hopefully I don't become one!
aaaa love Ghost Hunt!! 🩷
I do find it really interesting that these exorcisms... mostly involve, essentially, giving someone some care and attention.
Clean up the room and ask them what's wrong
Get them clean and bathed, surrounded by people trying to help them.
@@samuelesanfilippo222huh, that’s interesting and surprisingly believable
@@princessjuliana7309Thank you for sharing! This is actually so cool~
As a Muslim who speaks Arabic I have respect for matpat pronouncing those words right. 👍
Yepyep he also explains about jinn and ruqiyah pretty well, he really did a lot of research
That he did wrong is that Cresent moon and star isn't the symbol of Islam. The symbol of islan is the name of Allah
As an Arab Muslim I agree. I kept nodding and saying "yes" and "correct" at everything he said 😆
@@mirzahosein3492 Sorry, but that’s actually incorrect in most interpretations? I’m Muslim, and the most commonly used symbol is a crescent and star.
I've heard some people make something that sounds similar like flesh pedestrians or smth
Is that cool to say or is it anything that alludes to skin walkers
What names would you have to speak? I just need to know what not to say
@@Crow-jo2nq don’t say skinwalker or wendigo those are really the main ones, but i don’t like saying the rugaroos name either because they’re shapeshifters as well. Its honestly better to not know about them. Then you don’t have any incentive to speak their names or speak about them.
@@Oleanierum as long as you don’t include their actual name you should be ok.

I so love the way MatPat portrays Islam (and religions in general) so respectfully and how almost everything he says is actually true.
Yeah for real. A lot of TH-camrs insult and joke about Islam and religion in general, but I appreciate that he tried being highly respectful. Sad to see him go now
Hey, follower of Shintoism here!
6:59 - If an exorcist movie or series is ever set in Japan, it would be a great representation to see Inari Shrines and their maidens.
Matpat I just wanna say that im so happy you actually do your research in all your videos :] The way you talk about all of these cultures with respect makes me so happy
I feel like Matpat should do a theory on The Promised Neverland, it would be interesting.
the anime, what would he even theorize about?
That would be cool
Even Turning Red was possession and exorcism.
I could see a couple theories there, but the second season was very rushed and didn't come out as good as the first
matpat can find lore in anything even if it was a single piece of grass

I appreciate you giving disclaimers at the start of the video and being tactful and respectful about faith and religion instead of just treating it like a joke for entertainment.
I love seeing accurate representation of the wendigos here! The wendigo is one of my favorite bits of folklore from where I’m from and it was also nice seeing representation from Japan as someone who’s also Japanese!
We definitely need more monster/ghost movies based on these spirits, I watched “The Weird Origins of The Wendigo” and the story the guy tells us from the 1800’s…
Yeah…that’s definitely worth it to make a movie about the Wendigo.
Agree, I kinda wanna see him watch Cult of the lambs for fun
It's the way Mattpat enjoys bringing out the life from the movie while making us love it more❤
I always enjoy hearing religious stories. I'm an atheist, but I believe that humanity as a whole needs faith, and it's fascinating hearing what good and evil looks like in other cultures.
The analysis of the wendigo makes me realise just how much Until Dawn's team nailed the interpretation of the wendigo in the game
Right? Such a good game!
If it's ok to ask, if you don't call it by name, how do you refer to it? If not ok to ask, I completely understand
What is cree?

Educate yourself. There is already enough esoteric bs going around.
We have to move forward and abolish superstition!
The way I CHEERED at the monster reveal
They are honestly just… some of the most horrifying things. The twisting and devouring of humanity, both your own and others, the inescapable nature of it, how it is driven by desperation and need, the metaphor for how the acts can warp a person, etc.
As a 13 year old who has never watched the exorcist, or any other scary movies, this video scared me a lot
The idea that future Exorcist could take inspiration from other cultures and their spirits is something that has me extremely excited, especially if they put the effort and make it all extremely faithful and accurate
i’m a native american (navajo) and you got the Wendigo explanation amazing!!! I can’t explain a wendigo more perfectly than you
Plot twist: MatPat says Swiper is the true demon final boss.
9:46 soo... like the blue exorcist then? Cool!
Nice reference
God I love watching Matpat on a cold autumn day
The Wendigo is probably one of my favorite spirit/monsters when it comes to myths and legend's.
@@jayemover_16 loved how scary they looked in that game, reminds me a bit of that shy guy scp or the rake.
i never heard of wendigos until that game, heard its quite accurate which is good@@jayemover_16
yeah, feel you, there is a reason why tht design caught on that well . . . the truely unforgivable thing though is not changing the monsters appearance, but its essence.
Kids, Possessions... no death...? You've forgotten a key part Matthew!!! 0:35

9:50 so who's going to tell MatPat that concept is used in the anime/manga "Blue Exorcist" 😂
I think one of the most necessary exorcisms comes from film (and art), itself. ^_^ We need to encounter our demons through the magic circle of cinema in order to integrate them harmlessly into our waking persona. At least, that's one of the reasons I make films.

My mid just said YAY when I heard it.

It always a great day when matt posts

Hey MatPat love the theories they help me get through work and I appreciate all you guys do. But I haven't seen any theories on supernatural, it's one of my favorite TV shows and I'm sure with 15 seasons there's so much you could find to theorize about.
Wow, the exorcist sponsored film theory. That's got to be an unfathomable feat for the theorists!
The jinns just needs Therapy
Thank you for going over these different cultures, I liked learning about them!
As a Baptist Christian who loves your videos, I'm excited to see how the pastor deals with the demon!
