Some things that I thought were really interesting about the movie: - The directors gave the actors a script of a few pages that explained the story and the actions they would have to follow while filming BUT it didn't have many details, there were many things they didn't know, a lot was added by the directors while filming. - To guide the actors the directors were nearby all the time (the actors were aware of this from the beginning), they would place a basket with food and personal stuff every morning nearby their tent before they wake up. The basket also contained notes about what they would have to do that day (That's how the directors added decisions while filming). - It was stablished that the directors would use flashlights to guide them in the night, also they would add things, like the piles of rocks and the dolls BUT the directors didn't tell the actors the methods they would use to scare them so a lot of their reactions are real, even the crying. - There were other endings filmed like one in wich Mike was found dead by Heather hanging from a rope. - The people that are interviewed in the town at the beginning of the film are not part of the casting, they were not actors. Those were actually residents of the town nearby the forest. - The actors didn't know there was no Blair Witch legend, they thought the legend was used as an excuse for the film, also the people in town were paid by the directors to tell scary stories about the witch to the actors so they would believe that is was an actual legend of the town, this increased the initial fear of the actors. - The movie was filmed in 8 days - There were not many people involved in the making of the film, the 2 directors, the 3 actors, the writer of the script and a couple more. And because the film doesn't have special effects or sounds, just editing, the making of the film was very low in cost - Due to it's low cost "The Bllair witch project" is one the most profitable movies in history and one of the most succesfull independent films ever. With an original budget around $50000 the movie earned $250 millions
wait... "There were other endings filmed like one in wich Mike was found dead by Heather hanging from a rope." watching this video i was shocked that he was standing, i thought that he was hanged, at least i remembered it this way, but then i've read your comment
My favorite part of this movie is that the film crew would send someone out dressed up to rush through the woods or hide to scare the actors. If you see something walking around in the background, it's one of those crew members and the actors weren't aware. So if you hear one of them going "What was that!?" It's the actual reaction.
I think its also plausible that mike and josh were attempting a malicious prank and got scared by a real haunting halfway through, it would explain their weird actions and reactions, but also explains any unexplainably supernatural buts in the movie
that literally didn't happen. They were working on a school project together with limited resources. Did you watch the movie at all? The weird actions were genuine because they had no clue of what was chasing them.
@@zimzimzalabim nah i haven't seen the movie i was just theorizing based on the evidence presented in the video my theory fills in the gaps of matpat's but probably overlooks things i would have seen if i watched the movie
The reason he stood in the corner was because in the movie the group were told stories about how the murderer would make children stand in the corner so they wouldn’t be scared by the deaths of their fellow kids.
@@spawncampe No, though this theory is an interesting analysis and an alternate take on the film it has little to no substance to show for it. This theory dismisses the mockumentary companion that serves as the backdrop for the Blair Witch’s lore and illustrates how the film reels found couldn’t of been faked nor planted there by any human. It states the film reels were hidden underneath a colonial-era wall that was never disturbed and that the intention of hiding those there would be so that nobody would discover them. Then there’s also the facts about the house at the end of the film not being there physically as police and the FBI found no evidence of the house in the woods, meaning that the house that Mike and Heather go into doesn’t exist anymore and further proves the supernatural element to be true and dismisses this theory that Mike & Josh were the killers of Heather.
Wait but in the 2016 version that takes place after this movie the Blair whitch can literally be seen chasing that one woman it’s a tall and skinny figure don’t.....
Not really. Plot hole #1, It really isn't easy to disappear. Particularly if they've been using their real names. Plot hole #2, those 2 guys aren't exactly sophisticated "Catch If You Can" sort of guys. They don't know how to do this thing, They don't even have the brains to go their separate ways after the "murder". Not just for a little while to "lay low". They need to separate FOREVER. If one of them is apprehended, the whole thing falls apart UNLESS they have no knowledge of each other's whereabouts. Plot hole #3, They WILL be reported missing. People in emergency services in that area KNOW about that derelict house. They could have been LURING Heather to the one place where people were already searching for them. Plot hole #4, Those guys aren't particularly skilled woodsmen. An aerial search would likely found them in 30 minutes. Dogs and searchers would have found their campsites in mere minutes.
I’m pretty sure the reason Mike was standing in the corner of the room was because of the killer that supposedly lived in the house explained at the beginning of the movie, apparently the man would face the children the other way because he didn’t want them watching as he killed other kids.
@@nationalinstituteofcheese3012 this Is the story of Rustin Parr, they go into more depth into it if you watch the mockumentary curse of the blair witch. It seems to be that Heather, Mike and Josh were transported back in time since the house was said to have been burned down in the 40's, also the camera was found buried under undisturbed soil where the house once lay. The time travel theory was also used in Blair Witch 2016
This is true in the beginning the local said that Rustin parr would to two kids into the basement and make one of the them look away while he killed the other one so that’s why Mike was In the Corner.
@@breadstickboss4358 ??? argue with the theory in a better way lmao... because he explicitly states that THIS IS THE PLAN. make it SEEM like EVERYONE died there so the guys would be presumed dead and therefore got sway with their crime. "it says everyone died so it must be true" is a bad argument. I haven't seen the movie myself so I'm all open for you to elaborate on the "stretches", but if this is the only argument then it's really weak. also even if he does it still makes sense and it's still believable. it doesn't have to be accurate since it's a theory. edit: should've initially gone with the better argument, I have seen what the actual arguments are and they are plausible, but the "it says so so it's true" isn't a good rebuttal
I like to think both theories are true. The guys, annoyed by the girl decide to prank her by pretending to be lost only to walk right into a actual supernatural event.
@@Tues48 i was just watching a lets-play of until dawn after finishing one of the quary Then I watched the game theory episode about josh, then I decided to watch this only to see a comment about the game

better. heather’s camera doesn’t cut when it hits the ground at the end and we hear josh and mike talking and laughing about it, then one of them picks up the camera and cut it off. i personally would like that more.
nah it's better that its left up for interpretation. the best part about the blair witch project was that a person's imagination fills in all the blanks. thats what makes it scary/discussion-worthy
doing this would completely ruin the movie though and would destroy the ability to interpret it as you see it. You would no longer question anything after seeing the movie and just know the answer which is lame.
The thing I like best about this movie is IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT THE CAUSE IS. Supernatural or not, it’s terrifying, and it’s infinitely scarier not knowing exactly what’s going on. Whether she’s seeing some kind of supernatural abomination or someone she used to trust about to brutally end her life, something very wrong is happening and it’s scary.
Nothing really crazy actually happens in the game. Ellis just suffers from some crazy ass hallucinations and ptsd. He's imagining everything that is going on the entire game. He is even the one who killed the sheriff and stuff. The Carver guy wasn't real either, if he was. Don't you think Bullet would be barking at him when you first meet him?
@@m36games tbh if thats the actual ending/plot and you just spoiled it you're a piece of shit for that seriously. Just A Random Guy you really think there aren't some evil fucks out there that would lure a girl into the woods to kill her? I'm pretty sure its happened before. Forget the fact that the director confirmed otherwise, I'm just surprised that you don't think someone would do that...
I just had a crazy idea: Let's say that, in some alternate universe, this theory was the original intention of the producers. Then the sequel comes along and it's has the blatant supernatural elements of the sequel movie in our universe. The reason for this? The Blair Witch is actually HEATHER'S SPIRIT, which now attacks everyone who enters the woods where she died. So, in essence, The Blair Witch isn't real until Mike and Josh make it real by scaring and murdering Heather. Now wouldn't THAT be a twist?
@@MMGamesMM Negative emotions in death create a evil spirit. Either Heather wouldn’t realize it was her brother she was attacking, or she would be to engulfed by rage to care.
I come back to this one all the time, because this is one of a few theories that I treat as very plausible, and in fact very likely. There are some small issues- like how Mike and Josh would get away with this without drawing suspicion (then again, disappearing in '94 was a lot easier than today)- but for the most part there's zero evidence of a monster, and plenty of opportunity for the boys to slip away and set up the scary stuff. There are several things that the movie almost included- an actual visual of the witch, alternate endings where Mike was staring at Heather or doing something different- but the end product as-is tells us that there's zero evidence of the paranormal that can't be explained or reasonably doubted. I'm also of the mind that a demonic entity is far less terrifying than real people. Like yeah, the unknown is scary. But what's scarier to me is how awful people are capable of being. I've heard too many true crime stories and seen too much of the dark side of humanity, that the paranormal is no longer as scary. When I'm in the woods at night, my top fear is other people, not wild animals or cryptids. All in all, one of my top 5 theories across channels
@@alenahubbard1391 What's your reasoning though? I've never actually watched Blair Witch but from the evidence it sounds like a pretty plausible theory.
Why would they go through all that trouble? They could've murdered her at any point since nobody knew they were there. Also leaving the footage behind? That'd be too risky and made no sense if they murdered her. It'd be like trying to clear themselves from a murder nobody knows they commited. It's a fun theory of course. But saying it is very likely is a huge stretch.
@@Madferit91 there's also another flaw of the theory, one part of the movie shows that something attacked three of them in the tent by shacking the tent and almost like punching it and they all run out of the tent. could they two men have planted some other guys to follow them, was it something else? unclear so far
If anything, the ending where Mike is staring at Heather would prove the theory further as the real ending is the setup for the lore of the witch and lends credence to her existing, but if he was staring at heather instead of the corner that discounts the witch lore and he just deliberately lead her down there under a false pretense, which would make the "he lead her there to get her killed" theory make more sense
To be fair I kinda find it odd that even if it was a murder, why did they keep it up for so long? Why didn't they do it on day 1 or 2 of the trip and keep the recordings??? I feel like mike was the one who set it all up, and what killed her with** a trap set up by him, and mike is dead in the corner as maybe he set off a trap on himself. Josh just finds it and grabs whatever he found (aka the camera ) and yeets out of there?
I had all the same questions and suspicions years ago after it came out - I was teased for having "writer's brain" where I'm always over-thinking plots and can't just enjoy the movie. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Originally Heather was supposed to capture Footage of a creepy looking figure in the woods near the end. We actually hear her scream "what is that" but unfortunately Heather didn't point the camera to it (she wasn't told what she was going to see). If we got to see that Figure as Planned, it would've put a hole in this Theory.

Ever seen the alternate endings? There’s one where Mike is looking right at Heather when she dies. If that was the canon ending, then this case would be closed.
You mean the one where Mike was floating in the air? There's another where Mike was crucified on a giant stick doll in a matter of seconds. Are you telling me you overlooked all this and went "Yep, these filmmakers were definitely going for the plot of Josh killing Heather"? By the way, zero endings have Josh in them, because he was allowed to leave the production before they filmed the ending. I wonder why that is. It couldn't have been because his character was dead, or anything.
@@Deadener I’m aware of the other endings, but per my original comment, you will see I never mentioned them. @@Deadener yeah no alternate endings are not the original and never will truly be cannon since they're just cash grabs that stray from the story. @@grimboishungry9218 exactly it's next to impossible to make something like this again that captures the intensity when the first one came out. Paranormal Activity 1 came close to it the hype around that was huge.
i just watched this movie for the first time recently, and I love this theory, and I fully believe it. The nail in the coffin for me is, at the beginning of the movie when Heather is interviewing the people of the town, she comes across a mother who says that two men went hunting up by the cabin where the witch lives, and disappeared off the face of the earth (those men possibly being Mike and Josh and the cabin being the murder house at the end?) and then another guy she talks to mentions there was a male serial killer who killed seven kids, and killed them by twos, making one face the corner while he killed the other. Both of those two interviews are undeniable evidence for me that this theory is true. Idk if I believe the whole thing about Mike being able to set up speakers, especially considering this movie took place before Bluetooth speakers were a thing, and there are no outlets in the woods, but I believe this theory nonetheless. Also, about the seven kids thing, I noticed while watching the movie that the first time they see the piles of rocks, there are seven piles (which I’m sure Heather would immediately connect to the seven dead kids) and then the second time they see the piles, there’s three, which I assume is supposed to be a foreshadowing by the “witch” that the three of them are next. Idk. Just thought that was an interesting detail.
Yes there is a witch. This guy didn't mention the scene where they are in their tents and it sounds/looks like a bunch of school kids scream and smack their tent. So what they got a bunch of kids to come out in the middle of the forest to do this? Or they hauled a sound system to project the sound of a bunch of kids screaming all around and slapped her tent and then hid the sound system 5 seconds later when she came out of the tent? Also there were scenes cut from the original that showed the witch and alternate scenes of one of the guys dying hanging in the house.
Then you need to watch the movie again, because you didn't pay attention. There's plenty that blows this theory apart, both in THIS movie and in Curse of the Blair Witch, and arguably the Dossier.
For sound speakers in 94 all you need is like idk 2 boxes, around 50m/164feet cable hid under leaves and a power generator powered by gas hid inside deep woods. Not impossible and as long as you don't directly shine the light at the ground you wouldn't even see them very good in the woods esp if you hide the with leaves, stones mud etc.
The movie makes us see this forest through Heather's eyes, so in the end we are as blind as she is, detatched from our common sense. Your theory convinced me 100%.
Theories like these rely heavily on confirmation bias. You want to believe the theory, so you look for clues to support your theory while disregarding evidence that debunks it. There are multiple reasons why this theory doesn't hold up: - the whole folklore around the witch was the reason they went to the woods in the first place. So the idea of a witch is already established - Mike could've kicked the map because he was already possessed by the witch at that point - Why would they go through all this hassle to kill a girl? Why did they set up those supernatural things? It's all pointless - There are a bunch of reasons why Mike wouldn't turn to Heather. One could be that he was possessed by the witch and simply had to lure Heather into the basement. Another one could be that he is scared to look at the witch. So is this theory more plausible than the original plot? I don't think so
@@alexd4566 folklore like this in small town are things thay have been around since before the oldest people in the town were kids, so by this point its a local legend. (Also, this would ceme ted in a backwater town by two teenagers saying theyre gonna hike the woods real quick and then running away together using the legend as a cover) Speaking of using the legwnd as a cover, that's exacly what they would be doing, since they know that heather is basically recording the whole time, they need to show that the legend of the blair whitch is happening to them, which really makes them go out of their way in this whole endeavor, but that's what they need to do here, make her go crazy and that the blair whitch killed them and her When in reality it was them, they kill her and disappear using the blair witch and having the video recording to cover them for the murder
alex Debroux I also feel like kicking a map into a river is something that I would 100% do out of frustration. These people are scared, hungry, having nicotine withdrawal, and sleep deprived. They’re not going to do things that a sane person would do under normal circumstances.
This theory is nothing more than this dude using his imagination. The real story of the movie is what the writers and directors intended. Thats it, there's no changing it no matter how much you may want to and no matter how much you think about it and no matter how clever you think you are for "figuring out the real story." So...if the writers and directors say it was the witch then guess what? It was the fucking witch. No ifs ands or buts about it.
What about when that guy was being interviewed at the beginning of the movie, and talked about how one person would be sent to the corner to wait while the witch kills the other person.
I believe that Mike and Josh did it out of sick and twisted desire. They wanted to play out their fantasy situation. And, so, they tied in the legend to Heathers last moments to amuse themselves.
@@josiahtrelawny9303 if that's the case how did josh and Mike make all them things hanging from the trees and make pile of rocks at night while they are sleeping? Plus how did they make baby and children sounds and sounds of rocks and branches being thrown and broken?
@@Kevin_Yagoonie I mean he explained that in the video, but the biggest evidence against thsi theory is that it's just not correct. Because the witch was acfaully invented to be in the film. Remember the scene in the dark when they were running, and heather screams "omg wtf is that" well there was supposed to be the witch on their right but the actor didnt pan the camera correctly onto the director in the morph suit, and they decided to keep it out so it would look scarier.
Well, considering how they were able to navigate to the house well enough without it, that means either... A: They know the woods well enough to navigate it without a map. B: They actually had the map the entire time, and faked destroying it to justify going so far off course.
Interesting theory. But, what about the children who were laughing and shaking the tent? Mike may have set a couple of speakers outside to create the laughing, ok, but how did he make the tent shake? They would have to had accomplices to do that, which seems unlikely.
I'll tell you what really supports this theory: Josh and Mike were trying to get into Heather's head as soon as they entered the woods. They both were constantly questioning Heather's navigation and she kept insisting they weren't lost; and they weren't. They all arrived at Coffin Rock and, later, the cemetery as planned. Yet despite all this they kept needling her about her navigation. It really seemed like they wanted to get her to doubt herself so they could take some kind of control.
@@Torithegreat If they were doing that only at the start of the trek, I'd accept that. But they were continuing to do it even after she led them to both her chosen sights. It seems really suspicious to not have faith in her navigation after that.
I thought this exact thing as soon as I finished the movie, it all seems so weird how Josh and mike get so angry at her and yell to the point Heather is crying and screaming at them to stop, after constant arguments and disagreements Josh goes missing and everyone else is left alone??? Then they hear Josh yelling and whenever mike calls out for Josh’s name he does not answer however almost every time Heather calls for Josh, a scream can be heard back that sounds like josh, mike leads them to that house, then they camera cutting to mike in the corner and heathers camera goes blank??

There's an alternate ending where instead of facing the corner, Mike is floating in the air facing the camera. I know that alternate endings aren't canon but it just leads me to think that the filmmakers did imply something supernatural.
Well it could possibly be paranormal but they are alternate for a reason the makers could have just thought it would be scarier to be more mysterious and not clear

Just finished watching this, I go into the living room to find my dad halfway through watching Blair Witch! TBH, that coincidence scared me more than the movie itself.
Fun fact; Up until recently in human history dental prostetics were actually ‚made‘ / consisted of the ‚spare teeth‘ provided by the dead soldiers of the battlefields (x
I remember when they were interviewing the townspeople one of them talked about when the kids got killed, the killer made one face into a corner and killed the other so they couldn't watch or something. I think the ending of the movie is a look-back on that.
in the movie the locals talk about a serial killer a couple of times , saying the killer likes to kill people while the others are faced against a wall .at the end of the film that is what happens to them
Yeah, that was the whole twist of the movie. Not the most elegant plot twist, granted, but it's pretty clear that the movie wants you to keep waiting for a witch to get them, when at the end it's Rustin Parr. Plus the footage being found doesn't mean that anyone got home safe, quite the opposite, in the documentary (IIRC) to promote the movie they describe how the footage was found under the old foundation of a house in the woods that was destroyed a long time ago. An archaeology class from the same school where Heather's taking her film classes, or something. And they find the reels under layers of earth that couldn't have been disturbed for decades, so there's something paranormal in the canon. The implication is that they went through some kind of time loop, ended up at Rustin Parr's house, he killed them and buried their equipment under his house where it's found, under the bits of foundation that remain of the house, in 1998 or whenever by the archaeology students. That's the standard theory afaik. If Mike and Josh want to kill Heather, why do they voluntarily get lost in the woods for days with no food? Why not just kill her? Not to mention blood congeals/dries damn quick, if the blood and teeth had been brought along by Mike or Josh it would've been crusted over by the time they would've planted it. But Heather has to wash the blood off her hands in the river in one of the most symbolic scenes in the movie, one that a lot of people compare to Lady Macbeth. She's the guilty party here, is what the film is saying. She dragged Josh and Mike out there for no pay and her poor leadership and complete lack of preparation got them done in. Hence her infamous apology scene, where Heather is just completely broken down and consumed with guilt and regret. If Mike and Josh are to blame, te hand-washing scene loses all of its symbolic and emotional impact.
What about: The ending of Blair Witch (2016), Half of Blair/Burkittsville’s children mysteriously died, and that Rustin Parr (the sort of-copycat killer) claimed he committed the murders because of a “old lady ghost.” Either way a great theory. Edit: The emotional shifts are most likely from their paranoia - and Mike yelling, “I’m going upstairs!” is if he truly might die that night and Heather somehow survived, he would be yelling out to her where he’s going to let Heather know is last known location if he suddenly goes missing, and Heather is the only survivor. Edit 2: In Blair Witch (2016,) it’s revealed that the Witch can manipulate the layout of the house, which could also mean that she could make sounds from upstairs and downstairs. As with Mike standing in the corner, Rustin Parr, the owner (and killer) of the house that the trio goes into lured the children into his house. When he was murdering the children, he had the (what would be the witness) stand in the corner - which also ties in with Mike standing in the corner. The witch forces Mike into the corner, like Rustin did to the witnesses back in the day.
I’ve always believed that Josh killed both mike and heather. The story told to them about the kids dying is the same as this. The witch didn’t kill the children.
I agree. I thought she had others do it. I thought josh kill her while mike stood in the corner. However now I am just rewriting under another another person's reply of how a character from Blair Witch Book of Shadows were involved as well☕
Funny thing about Heather's book "How To Stay Alive In The Woods" it's opinion about following streams is quite different. It states to follow streams if it's known in a settled area (Cities and towns nearby.) but in unsettled land (Mostly wilderness.) don not follow the stream because it could easily end up in some pond or marsh land.
I would disagree to a point, if you know you are lost af, it might make sense to stay near a stream as its likely to be clear above so a plane could see you, also and honestly more importantly its a water source
After they "loop" to the log, I'd start a fire and burn the forest down, staying in the water to stay clear of the flame. Someone ought to find me then.
@@mi-wg6wo In the extras on the DVD/BR they mention removing Josh from the production before the other actors. They also mention that Mike was actually supposed to die first, but when Josh showed up late for one of the normal scenes in the beginning, they punished him by having him die first. If the plan was to make a murder plot, then wouldn't you want your murderer on set to at least experiment with having him in the final scene? They didn't do that. Because Josh was dead.
The craziest part about the movie wasn’t the witch or anything else it was why when going into a haunted forest none of them thought to bring a single weapon
I remember in school several people said they thought the girls fear looked way too real and not acted. Making the whole thing claiming it was mysteriously found footage seem real. And even doubters kept going back to the way she acted. But it turned out to be just a fake film and we were gullible kids. 14:48 that was the legend told by the “crazy old woman” at the beginning, the witch made one child stand in the corner while they killed the other, saying they “didn’t like the eyes watching them”
But Mike likely would’ve known about it to, so he could have done that on purpose so everyone who saw it would think it was a supernatural event rather than an intentional distraction. If the murder plot theory is correct, Mike would do what he could to keep suspicion from forming, ESPECIALLY on camera.
This theory is brilliant. Hands down the best one you've done, and digging through all those journals? Masterful. I wouldn't be surprised if the directors saw this, and either stole the credit, or said, "Someone's finally figured it out!"
CLove511 except that there are details on the website which show its wrong. According to the website the footage and journals was found in 50 year old undisturbed house foundations.
Yes, the same house. According to the backstory, that house burned down in the 1940s. The tapes/journals were found under layers of ash which had been undisturbed since the fire. It couldn't have been placed there without having been in place before the fire. It's mentioned in an 'interview' done in the Aftermath/Evidence section on the movies website. www.blairwitch.com/project/aftermath.html
I'm pretty sure the house they go into at the end is not the same original house that burned down in 1940. It's architecture doesn't seem that old, and it's not a stretch to believe they just found some random abandoned shack-house in the woods, killed her in it, buried her in the woods, then burned the house down.
I love this theory, but wouldn’t Mike and Josh then have to stay in hiding the rest of their lives? If they showed back up in town then everyone would be super confused because, as far as they think, all three of them were possessed and/or killed in that house. I guess they could try to convince everyone they miraculously escaped with their lives, but I feel like people would be suspicious of it
It's a local myth. They can easily go somewhere else, preferably another country, and get away with it, because the story is unknown outside of the town and maybe other people. By the time they get found again by people who lived there, the story of them will have already been forgotten and they got away.

In the beginning of the movie they interview a bunch of residents of the small town who all tell them the legend about the creepy hermit who lived in the woods and killed children in his basement. I feel like they could easily figure out the filmmakers went into those woods to film their documentary.
Remind me of the movie Jaw, where the teenage actors/actress thought the director use a real shark and scream for help, but he just give them a thump up
There was definitely a witch. Everybody seems to disregard time travel. In the final scene the three walk into the 3-story house that belonged to Rustin Parr. It is damaged and old but still standing. Well, the footage was found in the same location, except that the cabin had burned down to the ground in the 1940s. Josh, Heather and Mike went back in time and got murdered by the witch, or Rustin Parr following her orders.
@@DownTheHoleConspiracy thus proving the point that there was really a witch. It was what the filmmakers intended after all, but so many people ignore the whole Rustin Parr's shack story.
@@mi-wg6wo It's part of the original lore you can read at the website they launched for the marketing of the movie. There's actually a lot there you'd have to ignore to make any sense of the theory that the boys killed her because they planed all along. It's canon information that the tape we watched (aka the movie) was found buried under an old house that was build on top of the ashes of a house that burned down a long time ago (presumably the one we see in the movie). None of the area was altered so the authorities really can't explain how the tape even got there. The only explanation would be time travel (but like, not fun time travel. The witch was just d***ing with them since they had no way to escape). (sorry my answer is so long lol)
Decent theory too, I was skeptical at first, But I think that would explain the Rock formations they found at their camp in the morning, It was a portal..
@@teabearchurchill5600 Possibly to cover up their tracks since if the footage was found the police would think they're dead and wouldn't look for them.
@@AxisChurchDevotee That's not how police work. They already know Mike and Josh are with Heather. If they found no remains, that video would only prove they were near her when she disappeared. They would increase their search avenues, not give up. Nothing about the theory works. Literally nothing.
I remember wanting to write a short followup story for this movie, about a guy who had his own theory about what happened and wanted to go into the woods to confront the witch. One of the big moments in the story that puts the guy at threat and creates dread was a moment of doubt while he was thinking about his relationships near a campfire, which threw off his confidence just as the witch arrived in a mist form to inspect him, helpless. The movie might not have shown a witch, but the sounds of people and children when she was around made me think she keeps tormented spirits about her, and that is the source of her strength. And maybe one of them, if encouraged (a little girl perhaps), could rally the other spirits to desert the witch, dispelling her form - or at least weakening her to the point where she didn't have so much influence. The hard and dangerous part is reaching her to do so.
When this first came out, my friends thought something similar...that there wasn't any witch BUT that Josh went crazy, left the group, pulled out his hair and teeth and then proceeded to hunt the others. Pretty much the whole point of the movie was that your imagination makes the unknown 100x more scary than reality. Way better story than some goofy witch. Sitting in the theater this was one of the scariest movies due to the hype and ads...but in the end there wasn't a lot to it.
Fun fact: 90% percent of this movie was unscripted the actors ACTUALLY got lost in the woods mike really did kick the map into the creek most likely because the directors basically drove them to insanity by playing spooky sounds in woods and giving them less and less food but still enough so they wouldn't starve. Edit: ok so most of this is just lies the actors had personal scripts that they couldn't say to the other actors. Sorry for messing it up
Wrong, they had personalized notes for them left by the directors that they weren't allowed to share among their fellow actors. Mike was informed of the map kicking, but he revealed it a little later. Don't word it like that, y'all are just badmouthing the directors.
I'm pretty sure Mat's right on this one, then they decided to make part 2 and fuck it all up. Not sure if it was a good movie just that they ruined the first with this theory.

@Iraqlobsta the intention. This couple of dudes planned to take someone's life and toyed with her to make it the worst death they could, and only for their own entertainment. An actual supernatural witch would just be following her own rules and protecting her territory.
Iraqlobsta Plenty of holes in what you are saying. According to the theory, Josh and Mike planned out the murder beforehand, it would be relatively easy to set all this stuff up.
After watching this like a dozen times now I thought of something.... What if Mike's last name was Rofone... That would be weird.... Mike Rofone, the man in charge of the microphones....
You got me convinced when you said at the end if the forest was really haunted.. who recovered the footage from there and came back home safely... Spot on ✌
@@ragglerock2682 I correct myself, the official site said the tapes were found in a dufflebag under the ground of the basement in the house after it burned down.
Half- Dude That would actually make a lot of sense if the teens murdered the girl now that I’m thinking about it. They wanted to get rid of the evidence, so they burned it down and put it into the duffle bag they probably brought with them. Idk tho
13:17 i mean, yes he has lots of self preservation and stays away from the sounds at night, it is his best friends screams. If you heard your best friend screaming in an abandoned house you would at least think about going down there to help them
also at 14:51 during the internet marketing campaignes its revealed that the witch can look like who ever she chooses. the witch could have killed josh, and then posed as mike. another thing I want to point out is either on the online marketing or in the first few scenes of the movie, it's explained that there use to be someone who killed 7 kids, he killed them in pairs as one stood in the corner, much like mike is. that killer could be in the house. they could have killed josh, made mike stand in the corner (mike dropping the camera and we hear sounds of struggle) and when heather turns the corner she is killed. Leaving mike as the last victim.
When my mom and I first saw this movie she was like, "Heather went into the wood with two guys? One of which she didn't even know? That's stupid." At the time I was thinking she missed the whole point of the movie. After seeing this, maybe she actually had it right.
Philip Perry Philip Perry Just because your mum doesn't love you enough to even remember you exist doesn't mean his does. Moral of the story: don't be a dick
This theory actually makes perfect sense, considering this was the case with the sequel. It wasn’t the witch that actually killed the girl, it was the people.
No, just Blair Witch, the one that came out last year. I actually like Book of Shadows, despite the horrible executive meddling. There's a very original, ballsy take on the mythos in that film somewhere.
Very interesting theory and one I never considered. There is one scene though that isn't mentioned in your video, one that I think lends much to the idea that it was supernatural. One of the last nights before Josh goes missing, they hear children playing and an odd grunting noise very close to their tent. Right after they hear that grunt, they panic and start getting dressed but moments later, their tent begins to shake violently. While we never see the attackers, it's clear several people (or spirits) are slapping at the tent. Josh and Mike are shown to be with Heather inside the tent when this occurs and it's recorded on film, so it can't be chalked up to hysteria or some other mental manifestation. If Josh and Mike really were there to kill Heather, why have all these others in on the scheme that could potentially rat them out?
@zerogravity mind: It's possible. Maybe Josh and Mike really did have plans to kill Heather but underestimated the idea that the Blair Witch might actually be real. Maybe they incited the Blair Witch to appear if Mike and Josh were the ones who placed the rocks and generally trying to imitate signs of the Blair Witch to freak Heather out. Regardless of what really happened, I think the biggest hole in this theory of murder is why leave evidence behind? It doesn't really make much sense to go to all that trouble of freaking her out and eventually leading her to that house to kill her if they were going to leave documented evidence of their crime behind. They've been far too meticulous at this point to forget something as obvious as that. Remember, nobody knows they're out there, so why not just lead her to the house and kill her instead of setting all this up?
@Man Hall: I thought that too initially, but again, nobody knew they were out there. Suppose someone did know they were out there and they staged all this to seem like a supernatural murder. This creates problems for them since they knew it would be heavily documented as well as the fact that both Josh and Mike are reported among the missing. Unless they wanted to be on the lam for the rest of their lives, it doesn't seem like a very practical time to commit murder. I get it may have been a crime of passion, but leaving behind damning evidence like her journal seems like it would have been something they would have taken. It's not like they didn't know about it, they show her writing in it while Mike and Josh are present.
Could have been some kids/teens out in the woods, saw the tents and decided to have some fun scaring campers. Nothing to do with Mike and Josh/their murder plans, but a happy coincidence that help them along anyways. Would also explain why the boys were bothered by it-they hadn't planned it and were worried the teens might ruin everything. I don't know, but it is a possible explanation of the tent scene within this theory.
Here's a better theory: the whole town was in on it and murdered Heather and Josh to draw in tourist. Mike, being from the town, led them there as sacrifices and sold the film afterwards
@@filmandfirearms I mean the real town doesn't like the blair witch movies much, because those movies caused tourists to flock to their formerly peaceful town. They actually got rid of the signs when the second or third movie was made. Saying the townsfolk were in on it is adding insult to injury.
I feel like no one’s acknowledging that all 3 of them were inside the tent when there was something scratching from the outside and there was a bunch of children’s noises and laughing on like the third night. I’ve scrolled through hundreds of comments and literally like 4 people pointed it out.
Good point. I literally haven't watched the movie since the year it came out so I didn't remember that. I guess that's the same story for most of the people in the comments. This theory seems pretty solid otherwise.
But actually I just thought - could that have been a trick set up by Matt - the sound guy? Like had equipment rigged to play the sounds? I don't know anything about how audio equipment was back then but it might have been possible...
Very true. There were tons of hands hitting the tent from all directions. He fails to mention it. It almost seems deliberately left out because it alters the whole theory.
Good observation. I was waiting for the narrator, MatPat, to mention that scene, but it never occurred. Would like to see a follow up regarding that scene... other than that, the theory checks out.
Some things that I thought were really interesting about the movie:
- The directors gave the actors a script of a few pages that explained the story and the actions they would have to follow while filming BUT it didn't have many details, there were many things they didn't know, a lot was added by the directors while filming.
- The movie was filmed in 8 days
- There were not many people involved in the making of the film, the 2 directors, the 3 actors, the writer of the script and a couple more. And because the film doesn't have special effects or sounds, just editing, the making of the film was very low in cost
- Due to it's low cost "The Bllair witch project" is one the most profitable movies in history and one of the most succesfull independent films ever. With an original budget around $50000 the movie earned $250 millions

My favorite part of this movie is that the film crew would send someone out dressed up to rush through the woods or hide to scare the actors. If you see something walking around in the background, it's one of those crew members and the actors weren't aware. So if you hear one of them going "What was that!?" It's the actual reaction.

@@spawncampe and all they got was dissatisfaction

I just had a crazy idea:
Let's say that, in some alternate universe, this theory was the original intention of the producers.
Then why would she attack her own brother?

That would be twisted, but also immensely stupid.

Nope. Completely implausible. Click bait bullshit.
@@Madferit91
there's also another flaw of the theory, one part of the movie shows that something attacked three of them in the tent by shacking the tent and almost like punching it and they all run out of the tent. could they two men have planted some other guys to follow them, was it something else? unclear so far
If anything, the ending where Mike is staring at Heather would prove the theory further as the real ending is the setup for the lore of the witch and lends credence to her existing, but if he was staring at heather instead of the corner that discounts the witch lore and he just deliberately lead her down there under a false pretense, which would make the "he lead her there to get her killed" theory make more sense

i just watched this movie for the first time recently, and I love this theory, and I fully believe it.
Heather is with Josh and Mike interviewing a woman that said two men went missing and those two men are Josh and Mike?
@@ea8455 sounds like a lot to hide at the exact spot you need it to, in a very giant forest. Also Heather was leading the way most of the movie.
There are multiple reasons why this theory doesn't hold up:
- the whole folklore around the witch was the reason they went to the woods in the first place. So the idea of a witch is already established
- Mike could've kicked the map because he was already possessed by the witch at that point
- Why would they go through all this hassle to kill a girl? Why did they set up those supernatural things? It's all pointless
- There are a bunch of reasons why Mike wouldn't turn to Heather.
(Also, this would ceme ted in a backwater town by two teenagers saying theyre gonna hike the woods real quick and then running away together using the legend as a cover)
Speaking of using the legwnd as a cover, that's exacly what they would be doing, since they know that heather is basically recording the whole time, they need to show that the legend of the blair whitch is happening to them, which really makes them go out of their way in this whole endeavor, but that's what they need to do here, make her go crazy and that the blair whitch killed them and her
When in reality it was them, they kill her and disappear using the blair witch and having the video recording to cover them for the murder
alex Debroux I also feel like kicking a map into a river is something that I would 100% do out of frustration. These people are scared, hungry, having nicotine withdrawal, and sleep deprived. They’re not going to do things that a sane person would do under normal circumstances.
y'all talk too much
This theory is nothing more than this dude using his imagination.
Probably part of the act to mortify her
@@josiahtrelawny9303 if that's the case how did josh and Mike make all them things hanging from the trees and make pile of rocks at night while they are sleeping? Plus how did they make baby and children sounds and sounds of rocks and branches being thrown and broken?
@@Kevin_Yagoonie I mean he explained that in the video, but the biggest evidence against thsi theory is that it's just not correct. Because the witch was acfaully invented to be in the film.

@@zimzimzalabim of course, that could be why he chose to face the wall.
But I agree, the locals complicity makes this theory a stretch

"your imagination makes the unknown 100x more scary then reality." That reminds me of the lord of the flies!
I feel like the reason mike didn’t turn around was probably the guilt of seeing heather getting killed.
One of Burkitsville folks in the movie actually foreshadowed it by said that one will face a corner while the other one will be killed by the witch.
In the new movie they add details about it and in the end they have to face the corner or else they look at the witch and then they die of horror.

the actual actor's name is mike. i know him. hes a teacher at my middle school.
Booooooo!
Sorry for messing it up
Sounds like someone needs to be in jail. That's terrifying
Wrong, they had personalized notes for them left by the directors that they weren't allowed to share among their fellow actors.
Mike was informed of the map kicking, but he revealed it a little later. Don't word it like that, y'all are just badmouthing the directors.

That would actually make a lot of sense if the teens murdered the girl now that I’m thinking about it.

Have you even seen the whole movie?
@@TheOrderedFrog why have you got to be so negative
Wow, thats actually really down to earth and believable. Makes common sense in fact.
how was it believable? did you not watch the film? This conjecture is absolutely ridiculous!
NervXT perhaps they did it as an alibi thinking the vidoe would help their case instead of hurt it ....???
They probably hired some random guys to do that
Could have been some kids/teens out in the woods, saw the tents and decided to have some fun scaring campers.
He brings along Mike to handle audio.

Someone who manages to find one in a circular room
Here's a better theory: the whole town was in on it and murdered Heather and Josh to draw in tourist. Mike, being from the town, led them there as sacrifices and sold the film afterwards
The real town wouldn't feel to happy about that accusation; after the film came out, they got swamped with unwanted tourists.
@@globin3477 What?! Who wouldn't want a bunch of forests in their town?
We have enough concrete jungles.
That would explain the old man talking about Mike standing in the corner after he is dead.
@@globin3477 Excuse me, what? What did you mean to say?
Noises: sound guy. The rest: animals.
Good observation. I was waiting for the narrator, MatPat, to mention that scene, but it never occurred. Would like to see a follow up regarding that scene... other than that, the theory checks out.
Even Mike’s tone of voice when he shouts “I’m coming downstairs” seems more like a heads up to someone downstairs than it does a yell back to Heather
