Porsche 911 (996) Turbo Oil Change DIY!
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 8 ก.พ. 2025
- Hi Everyone! This is our oil change video for our 2004 Porsche 911 (996) Turbo (X50). Sorry it is so long 😉 It is the “complete” process including draining both turbo reservoirs, pre-lubing with oil in the filter housing, and pulling the fuel pump fuse to clear the fuel rails in order to pre-lube at the end. That makes for a lot of steps! It is pretty straight forward and should take less than an hour depending on the steps you preform. I believe this also applies to the 997.1 (Mezger) but you may not have the turbo reservoir plugs so you can skip that step 😊.
If you have any questions or comments (or if I left anything out), please leave them below. Always consult your Owner’s Manual/Shop Manual to verify all steps and values.
The following steps are optional:
• Pulling the fuel pump relay for pre-lube after refilling the oil.
• Pouring oil down the filter container.
• Draining the two turbo reservoirs.
The parts used are:
• Oil Filter Kit (includes large rubber O-Ring): 996-107-225-53
(goo.gl/1P6N1P)
• Filter Cover Socket: 000-721-920-40
(goo.gl/ATgiPg)
• Turbo reservoir plug washers (2) 900-123-140-30-18X22 (Al)
(goo.gl/85Tqfx)
• Oil Tank plug washer: 900-123-010-20 20X26 (Cu)
• Case drain plug washer: 900-123-118-30 22X27 (Al)
• Oil cover snout rubber O-ring seal: 999-707-465-40
• Magnetic Drain Plug: 944-107-197-01
You’ll need:
• 15mm Wrench/Socket
• 19mm Wrench/Socket
• 27mm Wrench
• 8mm Hex
• Torque Wrench
Torque Values:
• Case Drain Plug: 52 Ft-Lbs
• Oil Tank Plug: 44 Ft-Lbs
• Turbo Plugs: 22 Ft-Lbs
• Oil Filter Cover: 19 Ft-Lbs
The oil I use is Mobil1 Turbo Diesel 5W-40, but use what is specified by your owners manual.

No one on the entire internet is even close to such accuracy, passion and know how as Franny. She is spot on and she makes very important steps in this video. Porsche mecanics worldwide should listen and learn from her. Great video and great job Franny! Thanx!
Wow, thank you!
three years later and this is still one of the best tutorial I have seen. Great work!
I could not be more impressed! This lady is not only doing an oil change she obviously understands how to look after a performance motor and provides an intelligent commentary.
Extremely thorough. I am very confident that I can now change my oil on my 2003 Porsche Turbo. Thank you Heidi and Franny, Well done!
absolutely the most comprehensive and best video ive seen for an oil change on a 996 turbo , great job.
This Gal needs no intro to maintenance on probably any car, but I have a feelin she is highline all the way!
Very thorough instructions and informative to boot...namaste, bon jour, aloha and Ciao....
I bet the Porsche dealers aren't as thorough as you. Thanks for the fantastic video.
Thanks so much!
I was able to do the oil change yesterday. I just went step by step exactly as Franny said and it turned out perfect. Run of the mill oil changes spots wouldn't touch the car and I really wouldn't want them to knowing what I know now about changing this car's oil. Now that I can DIY it I don't have to worry about killing a bunch of time taking it to and picking it up from a European car shop. BTW Franny, I didn't have a 27 either....I don now! lol. Appreciate you Franny! Cheers, Darin
easily the best maintenance video I have ever seen
Just a terrific video with everything you could possibly need to know about changing oil on 996 Turbo X50. These ladies are awesome!
This has to be the most thorough oil change video on TH-cam. I give it more than one thumbs up, thanks Franny!
Thanks!
Great video! I used it to change my oil on my 2001 996 Turbo. Keep the 996 Turbo content coming :)
+John Gagliardi John, that is awesome! I am always happy to hear feedback like that. We do have some other things planned. I have been wanting to put heated seats in our car (the option was not chosen with our used car) and we are also going to put a garage door opener in where a blank switch is on the dash. We will also have some maintenance. I have been bugging Franny that it is time to bleed the brakes. It's been a busy summer. I hope we can get to it soon! Hope you have checked out some other videos on our Turbo. Not all are DIY, but there are some fun rides, a review and such. We do have a detailing winter car wash out there already. Glad you are enjoying our channel. Check out our BroAdmoor video. The 996 is the star on the trip (1st half of the video). Heidi
Thank you Heidi and Fanny! I just bought mine, and look forward to doing my own maintenance when ever possible. Your video gives me the confidence to go for it! ( but I will not be wearing anything white) I've been wrenching for years, and I really appreciate your attention to detail that can be so critical to an enjoyable experience. Cheers!
Thankyou Franny, the way that you describe with so much detail and the way you are so organised in the workshop is inspiring. Step by step we are led through with clarity and precision giving no chance of mistakes being made by those of us who wish to change the oil in our 996 turbos. I look forward to watching other videos of yours in the future on this amazing car as i have a 2002 model here in the UK. I doubt if there will be anyone else who can do a better job in producing a video to this standard. Thankyou again,
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful :)
"Turkey baster...we all know what that's for." - I seriously stated "basting turkeys" aloud... So glad i found your videos. Getting me more amped about owning my own 996 Turbo.
You are going to love it! :)
I've changed the oil on my 996TT many times ... these directions are Excellent.
Thanks Krusty!
Great DIY, very thorough with good explanations of what you're doing. The alternate angles you provide are appreciated. Keep up the good work.
+Kevin Fanciulli Thanks So much Kevin! Franny
I completed my own 996TT's oil change yesterday. Thanks to how comprehensive y'all are, there was not a single surprise - EXCEPT for the stripped hex on the right side turbo reservoir! Somebody screwed that up before I bought the car, but thanks to your guidance that this is a very small amount of oil, I didn't worry about skipping it. Everything else, including pull the C4 fuse and pre-lubricating through the filter, went precisely as your video showed. Thanks for all this excellent content!
Great! (well, not about that stripped bolt...) I think most folks do the turbos the first time and then never again ;) Glad it went well!
Best Video with a great a deal of minors details explained; which normally not covered by the official Porsche Garages Mechanics and a real DIY.
Besides facility look a Professional maintenance garage, a great video.
Thanks so much!!
Such a very nice and comprehensive video fir oil change. I have been videos of how to DYO the oil change but this video is so good. I’m planning to buy a 911 (996).
GREAT VIDEO.
I have done lots of oil changes ( this was my first in a 996 Turbo )
Really well done !
The lil tips were so useful .
Torque info is very valuable .
I liked & subscribed
Thank you
Thank you for all the little tips. I'm obsessed with BMW and Porsche and have started watching all your videos. Very informative also danke schön :)
bitte schon!
@@HeidiandFranny Hi Franny. I'm kinda curious why you chose 5w/40? I think 0w/40 for me always seemed too thin. I also haven't used mobil 1 in years Ive been using nothing but Motul, liqui moly and Castrol in my BMWs.
This is the best video I have seen on the oil change. Great work.
That was lot more comprehensive and detailed that I expected. Well done!
+RocketJohn thanks John!
Wearing a bright white visor while working with oil. Only a pro can pull that off :)
and a white polo at that. All that would be brown if it was me doing the work.
+Tim Gossett oh believe me, she has plenty of oil stained shirts! Lol. Heidi
@@HeidiandFranny I've found a great way to get out oil stains. Fill a 16 oz squire bottle with warm water and add 2-3 good squirts of Dawn. Mix gently or add a few drops of alcohol and shake. That reduces the foam. Spray the spots as soon as you take the clothing off. It pre-treats the oil and keeps a lot of it from staining. It works on surface spots, even large surface spots, but won't take out anything that is soaked in oil. :( It will also take out dirt and grime. I work on my cars in our parking lot and it is dirty. I come in looking like Pig Pen!
Cannot fault the video you explained everything that could be explained. So knowledgable ! Hi from England 🇬🇧
Great video, but I would recommend replace oil filter before you drain it, and it's not so necessary to fill oil filter with fresh oil.
OMG. Great and thorough video. Appreciate it. You are awesome. Getting ready for my first 996 turbo oil change.
The best video on oil change for a 996 Turbo. Thanks!!!
Thanks so much!
Wow, excellent presentation, I've done this same video and yours makes me feel ashamed of myself for doing it, lol well done!!!
Hi Clint. This is Heidi. Franny can do that, trust me, I edit too and her editing often blows me away. However, as TH-camrs, we are all in the content business together and your videos add value to people in whatever you decide to do. Keep creating. I couldn't find your video, maybe you haven't posted it yet? I am sure Franny is flattered, but we all can learn from each other. Thanks for the compliment. That was very nice of you. I will check out some more of your videos soon. Heidi
Just a comment on the topic: Video is great- perfect. But heads up if you don't have a lift and use jack stands where the suspension ties into frame cross bar which is pretty much the only place you can put them. The jack stand makes placement of the oil catch basin difficult for the forward plug so definitely prepare for a mess. I used a small-ish 3 gallon bucket as the usual flat oil catch pan was impossible.
Excellent. Gives me the confidence to do this myself at some point.
The best How to Video for my Porsche Turbo! I'm ready for my first 996 oil change today. Thank you!
+Kraig Strom that’s awesome! Let us know how it goes.
Great video thanks from a new 996 Turbo owner.
Put simply-you are a great mechanic.
VERY good video! Great work, Franny!!!!!!!!!! Some people do not drain the turbos and the oil filter case because of the small amount of oil to drain. but thats not the right proper way. YOU are doing the work properly!!!!
Read about you two in my issue of 356 Registry. Your videos are top notch and enjoyed this one in particular even though I don't have a Turbo. Like you I used a plastic funnel until I found a metal one with a "flex-neck." What a great invention...fits any application. Happy motoring and keep those videos coming.
+Camp Walosi that's great to hear! Franny will be creating a LOT of 356 videos, so I am glad you subscribed and welcome to our channel. Heidi
Amazing video. So thorough! I have 100% confidence I can do this job now. And I subscribed!
This is one of the best maintenance videos I’ve seen. On par with @chrisfix . but the torque specs seem a little high? Great job!
If only we had his (Chris Fix) numbers. Lol. Thanks for the comment.
Best 996TT Oil Change DIY…I use your video description as my check list. To that end, could you add the oil capacity (litres and pints) in you description. Thanks, great work!
Yet another great video, Franny as always you are a great person to watch and listen to, Thanks
Aww, thanks!
You’re the best Franny!
Excellent walk through. Greetings and thanks from Germany.
Thanks!
Good job Franny, I did give it a thumbs up and I watch it for fun, and it was fun. Thanks for uploading.
Fantastic video as always. Good to see the turbo drain. I never would have even thought about that. Glad to see someone else point out to check the pleats of the filter, very important.
Thanks. You are so right about the filter. That is a super important step and maybe more important than the oil change itself. Instant readout on the health of your engine. F.
Love you giving the part number on all the parts too!!
You bet! We are trying to links as well to make things easier :)
Well done! Great detail for a thorough job.
Thanks so much! Franny
Great video! I am taking delivery of my very own 04 996 Turbo X50 Coupe this coming week and feel very confident in oil changes after watching. Thank you for such a quality and detailed DIY. Hope to see more thanks!
You bet! That's super exciting about your new car! You are going to love it! I'm just finishing up shooting a belt change so that will be up soon. More in store after that! Thanks, Franny
Holy crap, your videography (?sp) is off the charts. I'll let the adjustable wrench pass this one time, but girl, correct this situation!
+D really sorry man, my bad. I do have a list of tools and sometime I am not able to find them (place won't have the right size). Yeah, adjustable wasn't the best. Next time. Heidi
Great DIY tutorial. Thank you!
really good video on teching everyone how to do this the best thing u are learning new sutff from this video everyday
As a Trainer/Assessor, I commend you on an excellent tutorial. This is the way a 'how-to' video should be done, with every single step clearly & thoroughly explained in detail.....including the most basic steps, which many tutorials skim over or omit because they assume incorrectly that 'everyone knows that' or 'it's common sense'. We all know what mechanics think about the 'common sense' of the engineers that design engines! 🤣🤨😏
Wow, thanks!
Your videos are great!! Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial on how to change the oil on a 996 Turbo! I like the level of precision and how well it is filmed and explained. I'll try to do the same on my 996 GT3 I guess it is the same (without the turbos...) Many thanks Heidi & Franny 🙂from Switzerland
Wow awesome!! Great job Franny! I don't even own a 996 yet alone a Porsche but I'm planning on it soon. This video will really help me out.
Thank you!
Great! Good luck in your search :)
you rock! Awesome video! Thanks for explaining everything in great detail!
Extremely informative video👍🇦🇺
I miss you guys!!!
Excellent and very detailed lesson. I usually flush my crankcase with kerosene to get any "schmutz" left behind. About one pint is plenty. There are people that flush with SeaFoam, but kerosene works just as well.
Hi im little bit late, and not sure u have the car till today. Great tutorial, super helpful. I spotted a little miss funktion on your oil pressure gauge, no way the car has about 1 bar oil pressure when engine isnt cranking. Its a common problem on this cars that the pressure sending unit fails after a while. Best wishes from Bavaria ✌️
We do not own that car anymore. It belongs to a friend and is running fine. I do not recall one bar if the engine was not running. It's all good! Thanks. Heidi
Best oil change video!!! Thank you!,,,
Nice video and it´s good that you provided all the partnumbers
+Niklas Lundström yea, thanks so much for watching. Glad the part numbers are helpful. Franny.
You make the best video. Much better. And more knowledge then dealer
Only car I’ve owned I didn’t change the oil on myself....mainly to keep up the service history which is important in the UK on Porsche’s to sell them again
Awesome video! Getting ready to do the first oil change on a new to me 997.1 Turbo. So helpful how you break to process down to step by step and even lay out the tools/washers/etc. BTW, one of your other videos was helpful in focusing on the Mezger engined cars. :)
Nice work Franny. Well documented as usual.
+chuck121370 glad you enjoyed. Thanks.
Beautiful oil change video! 👍
Now I wan't to install a lift in my garage...
Thanks! They are awesome! Check our review on ours... Super simple/easy. Franny
Excellent video, you do just the right amount of explanation for each step.
+Tommy Estridge thanks.
Excellent as usual Fannie. keep them coming. A big hello to Heidi
Thanks! I was ribbing Heidi this morning that she needs to get something out as well ;)
Wow! Who ever thought it would be that easy. Thanks
You did a great job on the video. I have the same car less the x50 package. I've subscribed to your channel and I'm really looking forward to other videos on your Porsche. Thank you again for doing this. It helps me tremendously.
Your vídeo helps me a lot. I will try to do it by myself. Thank you very much!
Excellent - as a porsche tech - well done
You rock men just take anything after a 911 to the dealer. Seeing you do this inspirers me. And IM A MECHANIC. I love it. I hope you will be going to the Emory Campout because I'd love to meet you. Rick Woltz President, Hawaii 356 Owners Group
+Rick Woltz when is Emory Campout?
July 14-16
+Rick Woltz oh. Probably not this year! :(
She is amazing. And that’s a good thing.
Well done, very complete, all steps nicely outlined.
Great video as always, I don't have a Porsche, but love watching this kind of thing, thanks for sharing, and the tips!
+steffydog1 it's a long and thorough video. I am glad to hear you enjoyed. Thanks.
Hello Heidi & Franny!
Fantasic video which takes information and details to a whole new level! 🤩
I would love to see a video, as detailed as this, were you change the driving belt on a Porsche 997.2.
Keep up the good work! Love your videos!
Thanks Lars! I did do a belt on the turbo and it is similar, but not exactly the same: th-cam.com/video/Qndx3WmEsTs/w-d-xo.html
Thanks again, Franny
Heidi and Franny's Garage Thanks alot! You are makin’ awesome videos! 🤩 I use to post a link on the Swedish Porsche-fan Facebook for all of us take part of your excellent videos.
Wow. Thanks!
Amazing job! So professional!
Great video! I learn so much about my car. Thank you!
Awesome as always Heidi, please keep up the great work :)
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Brilliant video and i like the information on things like washes part numbers, very helpfull. thanks.
Franny, that is a complex oil system, and I find it scary not having a physical dipstick. I like the idea of pulling the fuel pump fuse to pre-lube the engine before starting it. I'll start doing that on my next oil change. Thanks for the tip!
Awesome!!! Your super cool and very helpful.
Franny you are the best. I wished you could live in Australia and work on my 2008 997 Turbo.
Check out Home Built by Jeff... Heidi
Perfect. Just perfect
Detail is everything; and as usual, everything is detailed. Hope I don't meet that huge Gorillapod on a dark night. Great work!
+964tractorboy lol. Yeah. Gorillapod is great! Thanks.
Thanks for the great help. Fantastic video.
great video I've just got myself a 996 turbo x50 that I'll feature on my channel soon your video was very helpful keep these up. oh and please do one when you rebuild the hydrolic rams. keep it up!
Automotive Underdogs Thanks! Yeah, that's going to be a thing... They still work fine for now ;). I think I'll try replacing the copper washers first, but it may not be the fittings. I need to do a bit of research first I think. Looking forward to your video. Franny
Used to own vintage British sports cars; an early MGB Roadster, an MG TD, a Triumph TR4A, and a Morgan Plus 4. The old British cars often had a oil filter housed in a steel canister on the side of the engine. I remember many times after an oil change starting the engine with one hand on the ignition key ready to shut off the engine in a hurry if the oil O ring in the canister didn't seat properly which would blow oil everywhere. This could empty the pan very fast and ruin an engine. Once knew a TR3 owner who had just had his engine overhauled and was starting the engine for the first time after the rebuild. He had everything set to go except he had neglected to connect the oil line to the oil pressure gauge. These old Brits had direct line oil gauges so when the engine fired this guy found himself covered in oil before he could shut off the engine. Fortunately no damage was done. Fun times with old cars...
Thanks again for the technical video!
Very detailed and educational video. Thanks
+Caner Sahin Thanks Caner, glad you enjoyed it! F
If I wouldn't be confident to do that oil change by myself after your video, then probably that will never happen. Great work lad's. Love the footage, the attention to details and the background explanations.
+mauiman52 our videos aren't meant to intimidate, just help. However, it is important to understand what you are getting into. Hope it helps.
:) Thanks! It really isn't all that nutty... You really only need to just drain the engine and the tank. I obviously like to talk to myself a lot ;) Glad you enjoyed it! Franny
Sorry if my comment was misleading. I meant to say that when looking at Franny doing the job, task by task, I gained a lot of confidence in doing that myself. Obviously, my strengths are elsewhere. Thanks again!
Just bought a 996 turbo wish I could bring it to you for an Oil change! I am sure you don’t get this type of care from anyone!
This video is great!!!! Very thorough. Thanks.
Thank you for watching!
Excellent video. Thumbs up and subscribed.
Heads up. Thank you for reminding everyone about the 2 wrench method at min 7:10.
Totally. You really don't want to twist the bottom that tank... I know my car and that drain plug was torqued properly and isn't stuck, but I can see how it could be a real issue on a new purchase when you don't know who put it on from the last oil change ;)
Thanks for your nice video now i can d.i.y. with my 996tt
Bonjour. Bravo pour cette superbe démonstration méthodique d'un entretien comme on en rencontre plus beaucoup. Superbe voiture, manifiquement bichonnée. Typiquement la voiture qu'on a envie d'acheter derrière vous .Bonne continuation. 👍✋
Great video... very informative. Thank you!
Bravissima, descrizione minuziosa e impeccabile
