This video genuinely subverted my expectations. Initially, I thought all the cuts and breaks to A.I. or pigeons was a mental break from the stupidity all the while describing how these things work. But at the end, he explained what he thinks TroomTroom is doing, and it was exactly what the examples were! An algorithm that copies what was previously successful. Really well written, I was super happy there was a point to all your rambling.

you're like the first person i've ever heard to actually touch on the reason why art is being digested into nothingness by capitalism.
Art is being influenced by the consumer demographic that admittedly often knows nothing about art in capitalism... but only when those 'artists' care nothing for their art in the first place, and are only driven by profit. An artist is still free to follow their vision and make good art with the risk of low returns. And sometimes quality work does have high returns.
In communism - that's where art is digested into nothingness. The consumer and creator are both of little importance. Art serves a utilitarian purpose for the good of the collective or it does not exist. Individualism and self-expression are the sort of selfish ideals that only a greedy capitalist would hold. I caution you not to forget how many artists have historically suffered under socialism and communism when you bash capitalism in general for its' effect on the arts.

The initial genetic cars don't seem to factor in wind resistance. That's why the best cars in the group are so front-loaded.
If wind resistance was involved, air particles would be slamming into the cars like into a brick wall.
wind resistance also wouldn't matter since the cars seem to be trying to navigate extremely rough terrain at speeds too low for air resistance to matter.
Most cars built for climbing now are not very aerodynamic and if they are its usually circumstantial since the car was made using an already built chassis
My guess would be that dying by falling over backwards when climbing a hill is far more common than dying by frontflipping when descending (because of the torque applied by the wheels). Because having the weight biased towards the front minimizes the risk of falling over backwards that design gets rewarded.
It wouldn't matter either way. They're going for distance not speed

Nah I was pretty confident that he was going to say that, no matter how far you go with genetic algorithms, even when you are hundreds of generations down, there's always a few useless specimens that can't do anything right. Essentially, the algorithm is only improving things because the failing specimens get ironed out. And then argue that 1st world humanity doesn't really have a means of ironing out the negative specimens one way or the other, then cut to the same genetic algorithm with cars, but this time have no 'goal' it's trying to achieve. And then when the algorithm fails to make any improvements to the car, because there are no such thing as 'negative specimens' and they aren't being removed, the species will lose it's advancements it had made and return back to being cars that can't do much, and draw that comparison back to humanity. Now that's a jumble of words... But I guess I'm just way too cynical for me to instantly draw a comparison to humanity dooming itself :P

Hi I know it's been two years but if you are still interested, you don't even need an app, there are plenty of great online resources about this stuff like from Khan Academy, Amoeba Sisters or Crash Course which are free and make the material less dry than a textbook or classroom tend to be. And as for a specific app, I found Evolution from Keiwan Donyagard which I have not used but seems to have a similar concept and good reviews.
