    Fantastic video! Definitely the perfect approach to this type of thing and honestly a LOT of cameras have the streaking problem but no one seems to really complain about them. Regardless, of the streaking every camera has obstacles. This is just one for this camera. Again, great video!

    That probably explains why I've never noticed the streaking.
    Always shooting with DR Boost ON slightly over-exposed by one stop or 120p without DRB at low ISO values.

    Great. When I heard about this I said ruh-roh but I tend to work with ISOs cranked as low as possible and everything indoors lit. And thanks to your work here we've all got the information we need to work around it. There being very few perfect cameras anyway we're mostly used to that, or should be. I continue to really appreciate your approach in these videos. Does it exist? Yes. Is it a big deal? Mostly not. That's how professionals tend to approach these things, because the real world is always throwing you curve balls. Life goes on. 😎

    Appreciate the video but it shouldn’t be an issue to begin with, or the community’s job to find work arounds and fixes. I’m a GH6 owner and think Gerald and Co were right to call this out, and we should demand better for our hard earned cash! That being said I just feel they’ve pushed this particular sensor too hard, hence the noise, etc. I’ve also seen the same streaking with the Canon R5C but there’s still no excuse.

      I suggest you watch my response to Gerald undones review. Yeah this is a disappointing and annoying issue but it’s super super rare and in the few times it does come up one or two clicks on the ISO dial essentially eliminate it. If you don’t like it or if it’s going to really affect your work this camera isn’t for you so maybe consider some of their full frame stuff or a GH5ii. • @TheBlakeEverhart
    @TheBlakeEverhart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One other tip for dealing with it- I've noticed that these streaks mostly occur deep in the shadows of V-log near the noise floor, which is an area I tend to grade out anyways. If I can see the streak, it usually means I need to crush the blacks a little more.
    I think the issue is Lumix pushing their hardware too far in order to claim more stops of dynamic range than the sensor can really provide. A lot of manufacturers seem to be doing this. I've noticed as claims of dynamic range increase, the images from cameras have been getting noisier and more prone to artifacts. I just grade it out. It may feel like you're decreasing the image's dynamic range, but it's a range that was never really there to begin with.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Underexposing then adding contrast and raising the exposure by like 1-2 stops will certainly bring this effect out. Thats what I had to do to get it to show up at all for my testing.

    • @RhettThompsonFilm
      @RhettThompsonFilm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shutter angle is just more of a film/cinema standard. It takes the “double your frame rate for shutter speed” and makes it automatic when shutter is set to 180 degrees for correct motion blur.

    An idea I had is if you have an external monitor, create your own custom LUT (however you like it) but with the blacks crushed down and highlights adjusted slightly down so the image looks more or less the way you would use it in an edit, maybe even a tad bit dark. Looking at V-log off the little camera screen or even off an external monitor, with the very “soft, flat, grey” log look its hard to notice streaking. The streaks get lost in the flat V log image. If you are viewing your image with the LUT already on the clips these streaks become super obvious and although this is not a solution it at least helps you from wasting your time and coming home to shots you thought were good but have streaks. It kind of allows you to notice right away and change your settings, lighting, angle etc to try to avoid this. Also thanks this is a great video.

    I did some digging, and this is an inherent problem with all CMOS sensors, especially at high ISOs.
    Quote from Jarred Land (president of RED):
    "this is a relatively normal CMOS thing.. kinda like the black sun dot all cameras used to have ( i think some cameas from other manufacturers still do ) its been there since the R1 since we do use CMOS technology like almost everyone else. If you take a small source highly clipped a bunch of stops against almost black and it crosses the edge of the frame or just off the edge of frame ( most cases ) you will see what looks like a streak. People call this the "phantom blinds" effect because the easiest way to replicate this is to open slit blinds into daylight in a pitch dark room. Of course you will see this at higher ISOs, and most post houses have developed a post fix from dealing with it over the years from many cameras. Its a silicon thing.
    The company that makes the dynamic range charts we use actually have added a little flag that goes over the clipping square now, because if your shooting a CMOS camera and you get that flare it can actually trick you into thinking you have more DR... since the streak replicates the shape of the highlight and lifts everything with it."

    I don't like when TH-camrs tries to make excuses for a product defects, and tries to give a workaround. This is not the job of a reviewer it's the job of the product manufacturer. At the time of buying the product I don't think the seller of the product would ever accept less money. No excuse for Panasonic, if they want to sell product they need to make sure it doesn't come with any problems, if there are any issues they should be ready to fix it at no cost or inconvenience to the customers, and TH-camrs should stop trying to normalise manufacturers poor workmanship.

If this is the case then businesses like Panasonic, DJI should pay for beta testing. We the consumers should hold these companies accountable and force them to produce well engineered products. It is the customers at the end of the day pay the highest price in terms of loos of business, reputational damage etc etc.
