I'm about to give this a try. You're not alone. :) I just bought a house that was very sophisticated... in 1985.

Ty so much followed your guide and everything is working as expected. I added an extra transformer behind my nutone main control in kitchen to power the Google hello as I was worried about issues leaching power from one of the two transformers

Great idea to use speaker wires as a power. Thanks for sharing!

You are the only one who has a video like this. I have a 2nd gen wired nest bell and the white circular thing does not have a second set of wires coming out of it. So I'm not sure where to connect the one set of relay switch wires. Any thoughts?

Do you have a video on how you connected the speaker wires to the Transformer? I have TE-5D transformer. Very helpful video. Thank you!

Have there been any issues with just connecting the speaker wires to one of the existing transformers behind the master intercom unit?

Great video. Do you have a video for the changes you're making at the Nutone base station? Everything on the outside at the doorbell seems straightforward after your video but I'm lost as to the changes I need to make inside. Thank you very much.

I have installed a video doorbell the last couple of days worked fine, I have added a 24VAC power supply behind the whole intercom system in the wall house to send power from there to the wires outside at the doorbell. But I have one problem with the humming inside the wall where the whole intercom system is, could that be from the 24VAC I have added, if so will it make a difference if I moved it around behind the system???

Thanks for the video and all links in the description. I'm going to do the same but I test my original button, it has 24v now. Not sure if I would need a new transformer like your case? Will this process work with ring pro or ring 2? Thanks again

Q: If you are not going to use the original doorbell button any more (you hid it behind the plate), can't you just take it out of the loop? Why did you reuse it?

    • @jbrunt1

I guess it just acts as a bridge. You could probably fuse 2 lines together with 2 more wire caps and toss the extra doorbell piece. Mine works as shown in the video though.

I believe the button has to be there or else it will be at a constant triggered mode. With the button there, it will act like someone is pressing it once the nest doorbell is triggered and the relay will convert the AC to DC power and trigger the original button. Not 100% sure but that’s what I got out of it after watching a few videos

Thank you for the video. would you mind posting a video or pictures of the connection to the transformer ? I am not clear how you connected the speaker wires to the transformer on your system? would you mind posting your email address or contract me directly. Thank you.

Amanda Casey sorry I just saw this comment. Behind my nutone base station I had two transformers mounted in the wall to power the system. I took the 2 wires that originally ran from the back of the doorbell/speaker to the circuit board behind the nutone base station and unscrewed them from the circuit board and reattached them directly to one of the transformers (with the power shut off) I loosened the 2 screws on the transformer that already had wires running to them and just added one speaker wire to one screw and the other speaker wire to the other screw (so each screw had 2 wires connected to it - the original wire powering the unit and the additional speaker wire). I tightened up the screws and went back to my doorbell/speaker and attached them to the nest cam as shown in the video. Hope that helps.

John Brunt wow John this is great and is very similar to what I’m trying to do. I wasn’t sure I could use the front door speaker wire to get power off the nutone transformer. I’m installing a SimpliSafe bell and it doesn’t have the supplemental power device that the nest has. In my case would you have a recommendation on where to place the relay device (I found where you got that piece)? Would I splice/piggyback the relay with the video doorbell wires? Also was it easy to figure out which wires went to the front door speaker or did you have to use trial and error? Appreciate your video.

PJ to answer the 2nd part of your question, when I unscrewed the speaker wires from the existing doorbell faceplate I marked them by tying them off in a knot. Then behind my base station inside the house I found the same wires attached to screws on the circuit board labeled “DOOR SPKR” - these i unscrewed and attached directly to transformer...for your first question, I’m not an electrician so I don’t know exactly what the supplemental device does but on simplisafe’s website it says you can call support to get a chime connector sent to you. I believe this performs the same function as the nest one.
