Michael Birkle, You are so right, Tuba Skinny is not only the best traditional jazz band in New Orleans, but in the world. I haven't heard one better. Shaye Cohn is wonderful. I could listen to her play all night long.
So great to see younger people having an interest in, and keeping alive such a vital and wonderful American musical genre. These guys are awesome! Bravo!
He is Ewan Bleach and joint leads The Man Overboard Quintet with Thomas Gould on violin in and around London, UK. First album All Hands on Deck is superb and if bought and downloaded through Amazon then there are 3 bonus tracks, all well worth having! Seen them live twice and can say that if you close your eyes whilst listening to the album you could convince yourself it was a live performance.
To me, Dixieland Trad Jazz is the best feel good music in the world. There are some days I can't get enough of it. I've only been to New Orleans a few times but as the "Happiest Place on Earth", Disneyland, eat your heart out.
Great job of filming, too; almost like black and white,- crisp, clear, super-real and somehow evocative of an earlier time when this music was first made . . .
How come that in seven years and with more than half a million views, nobody seems to have given the title of this piece of music. It's 'Memphis Shake', recorded by The Dixieland Jug Blowers in 1928. It's on Tuba Skinny's album entitled 'Blue Chime Stomp'.
This old-fasion colored movie is perfect for such an authentic real old jazz 8) Excellentissime ! I recorded it for offline watching the first time I watched it !
traditional new orleans jazz, also known as "hot jazz" or rag time, rag time however can be solely on piano and not in a big band, so to refer to it in its big band form would be to call it traditional new orleans jazz, hot jazz an encompassing term to refer to the movement of these new orleans jazz bands and musicians of the early 1900s; some artists in this style would be louis armstong & his hot five, king oliver, and jelly roll morton
Well, Juan: would call it---"Hot Jass of New Orleans" and getting a bit more technical---"Hot Integrative Ensemble Jass of New Orleans".....but it is possible to have Hot Integrative Ensemble Jazz in a more modern vein, but most modern jazz groups are platforms for "solo expression" rather than musicians coming off one another(speak and answer) and joining a combined "ensemble sound" in which all musicians in the ensemble express freely but in concert. Traditional New Orleans Jass!! Love it!!
Hey, no problem Don't worry about it. I just thought maybe you might have recognized him from another band that might be worth checking out. Maybe at the time, you just wondered if he was with Tuba Skinny.
It's about the music, and on the street... well you don't wear a tux to go fishing....or waders and overalls to a wedding (lol they do here in NC). But go for it, I'll record you if we cross paths..
Soulful, Working Class, Old School, Low Tech, HEAVEN!! There's more music and soul here than in five overproduced BS performances by these so-called Pop "artists" with their jillion-dollar careers.
Don't hate, just gotta appreciate what people do. I can't say I'm a fan of this music but I certainly respect it for what it is! It's brilliant for what it is. For these other genres that you're slamming, well they are what they are, and if there isn't enough "music" for you then it's just not for you. Like you said, it's old school.
I think you mean the guy who looks Mexican, standing behind the band with the hat? He's not with Tuba Skinny. Does he look familiar to you from another band?
Umm... not to be picky but if this is Mardi Gras how come nobody anywhere is dressed like it? You want to hear clarinet played like NOBODY can play it, go hear Doreen (Ketchens) out in Jackson Square. Absolutely the most inspired player I've ever heard, anywhere.
Probably the best trad jazz group I've heard in the last fourty years,
Gubmo food

The man with the clarinet. Awesome. I wish I could be there live.

I think New Orleans it's the real spirit of America. It's the first city i would visit in U.S. I wish i could one day

Even when Robin looks super bored he's still in the groove; great percussionist!
Great job of filming, too; almost like black and white,- crisp, clear, super-real and somehow evocative of an earlier time when this music was first made . . .
Just lost my middle son and listening to this music fills my soul with happiness it perks me up and makes my spirit happy Joyce Annese
Trad jazz is the greatest, and you guys are it.
Love it! Quality recording both audio and video!!

My God! I love so much this band!!
The music lives in the street, in our souls, in the majestic morning, and the relentless night. We are the music and music is us.
Tuba Skinny is coming to the northeast!!!! See you in upstate NY.
They are. Global treasures!
ich liebe die Klarinette !

Hot Jazz... From New Orleans, where the jazz was born
Love your tunes, hopefully see you all this year
Amazing sound.
They don't call it Dixieland down there. It's called "Traditional New Orleans Jazz." Great stuff.
I just love them! You guy's are AWESOME!
Kinda "RagTime/Blues"
w____OW! I feel good listening that kind of music. God bless you all.
That's the stuff - some low-down, dirty, tailgate trombone.

Outstanding stuff: good blend, good feel, and fun to listen to.

I share your opinion.Aren't they wonderful?
Oh Tuba for real not Sousaphone
I've been corrected a number of times on the style of jazz...And most performers in Nola prefer it being call "Traditional New Orleans jazz"
very decent dixie man!

pyannaguy a naked jazz,
I think you mean the guy who looks Mexican, standing behind the band with the hat? He's not with Tuba Skinny. Does he look familiar to you from another band?
I want to know what style of jazz is
lol.. the mic is under the little folding table, so every one but the Tuba is facing it...,
Actually that looks like Shaye on cornet, and Erika is their vocalist, who I don't think appears here :)
Erica, on this tune, plays the bass drum(which she sits on) but doesn't sing.
this is good
I needed headphones
WAIT WHAT? SAYS WHO? WHEN?
Shaye is on trumpet...
I'm confused are Tuba Skinny and loose Marbles one and the same?
No. But much of TS came thru LM
Dixieland
"You buskers will have to move on along. I'm about to take a hose to this sidewalk"
NO is different. As long as players follow the rules, minimal hassle. Cops have sat in with them
Obviously After Bourbon,and 4:20 on Bourbon St.:>)))
Umm... not to be picky but if this is Mardi Gras how come nobody anywhere is dressed like it?

Doreen is amazing, and she can sing pretty darned good too!
