I am very sorry that in the past our two countries had terrible times and that they were at war, for what the Italian soldiers in those lands did to the Slovenes.

What about the most important thing found around 20km from where is modern days Ljubljana - The Ljubljana Marshes Wheel? Long story short - it is the oldest known to men wooden wheel fixed to an axel for easy rotation and probably transportation, dated at more than 5150 years old. This is THE one of the most important things ever invented in the whole history of human kind.
We were in Slovenia in 2019. My daughter was amazed by the blue yet clear water in the streams. I loved all of it. My father's parents were both from Slovenia.
For anyone interested in professional cycling, the 2020 Tour de France featured not only the first ever Slovenian winner, but the top 2 overall finishers as well! Tadej Pogačar overcame a 57-second deficit to fellow Slovenian, Primož Roglič, on the penultimate day of the 21-stage grand tour, which ended with a 4-mile climb up La Planche de Belle Filles. On that day, Pogačar won the stage, won the White Jersey (Best Young Rider), Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains), and most importantly the Yellow Jersey (Overall Leader). It was one of the most climactic endings ever to be seen at the Tour de France. Pogačar and Roglič embraced afterwards, showing the pure class of the two competitors and countrymen.
Tadej Pogačar is the youngest winner of the Tour de France since 1904, and has a bright future ahead of him. Primož Roglič has been very competitive the past few years after transitioning away from ski jumping, winning the 2019 and 2020 Vuelta a España (another of the 3 grand tours in professional cycling). Both riders are among the world's best!

My mom is Slovenian. It's a beautiful country. One thing of note is what overachievers the women are in the homemaking department. Very elaborate cooking/baking skills. Homes very clean. Personal favorites are flancati and potica.

I associate Slovenia mainly with ski jumping, which is very popular in my country (Poland). Primoz Peterka, Robert Kranjec or contemporary jumpers (Anze Lanisek, Timi Zajc, Prevc brothers.) In fact, the Poles and Slovenians are the only two Slavic countries where this sport is very popular. I love watching the competition on the Letalnica

I am an American who does know that Slovenia is the home of the Alpine Slavs. Just off the top of my head it is located between Italy, Austria, Serbia and Croatia. And I've never been there. But I really want to check out a few puppet theatres there! But then again I live in Georgia, not the American state. Most of my fellow Americans have no idea where I am. Thanks Barbara for letting us know about people Slovenia is famous for.

Yeah the oldest grape vine that still produces grapes is in Maribor, I went to see it once or twice but not much since my grandparents live in the western part of Slovenia so we usually are hiking in the Julian Alps.

It's rather ironic that Mountain Dew is banned in most of the EU as it allegedly has a chemical found in flame retardants according to Simon Whistler. I consumed some Mountain Dew at the airport in Frankfurt and it tasted nothing like it does in the US so that flame retardant but give its unique taste in America.
I never planned it, but the next time I am in Europe I will visit Slovenia :-) All thanks to you!

I enjoyed this very much. I'm not hard to please and do try to enjoy things when I can. Possibly I am easy to please because I have suffered from debilitating severe depression for thirty years and have great difficulty experiencing life with those uplifting emotions that many I fear take for granted. I may not feel genuine joy very often, but still I am able to appreciate things of quality and the effort that goes into a creation . . . and your channel is that . . . quality . . .always. Thank you for your hard work and the energy you expend to create every video - - - and do take care of yourself.

As an ethnic German, I knew more about Slovenia than most Americans (Slovenia has been part of German nations on and off). But I have learned much more following Barbara. Slovenia is truly a beautiful and remarkable country with great people! It goes to show that 'small' nations can be great. Like Barbara herself, wonderful things can come in small packages.🙂

There's a thing some slovenes once introduced to me that has Cockta and 1000 Roses in it. Forgot the name but it's my favourite slovenian "thing" (besides the beautiful landscapes) and they drank it like water.
You probably mean home made Jägermeister, the original brand is from Germany. Big amounts of it are not advised... I think that plum/pear/blueberry brandy are more preferred, but everything flows...

Slovenija also has the largest zip line network in the EU as I've been on it twice. I also went rafting on the Soča River as it's a very beautiful area in and around Bovec and the Soča Valley.
Yes. Movies are filmed everywhere. Literally, every country.. province.. state.. etc.. Very good Barbara. A few were in Slovenia.
Peter Florjancic was the most impressive person to me. He was a genius but only made the difference he did because he combined that with hard work. I love the way Barbara is always trying to inspire us to challenge ourselves. Even when we fail, we grow. The most important thing is to never give up on ourselves. Thank you Barbara! 🙂

I should also mention the person most responsible for the explosion in popularity of Polka music, Slavko Avsenik. Although "invented" in Bohemia, the Slovenian Slavko Avsenik stylzed polka, catapulting it into Southern Europe, then the rest of Europe, and on to North America and elsewhere. Avsenik gave rise to hundreds of Polka groups worldwide, and his polka became a central attribute of Slovenian culture. As an American who was exposed to a rude, Americanized version of Polka in the 1960's and 1970's, I had no idea Polka could be so wonderful until being introduced to real, Slovenian Polka out of Southern Europe. From my perspective, Polka is a beautiful cultural "glue" holding together traditional music cultures of Slovenia. Of Slovenia's relatively small population, a large percentage are accomplished musicians and performers, with countless Slovenian groups carrying on this wonderful tradition. Among the many groups are my favorites, Die Oberkrainer Polka Madels, Extra Kvintet-LadyKryner, Navihanke, Polka Punce, AlpenOberkrainer, Gorenski Kvintet...and so many other. Slovenian music makes up a good part of my day, bringing much happiness and joy.
