In 1996 I visited my sick aunt in Slovenija (Koroska Bela) for ten days. The whole town was excited to see me and I visited at least 6 households every day. By the third or fourth visit, I could no longer even see food let alone eat any of it, so I started declining what was offered. People complained to my aunt, who told my mother, who in turn was super worried I wasn't eating. Not to go too much into my youth but this was not an unfounded concern. However by the end of my stay, I gained so much weight that I couldn't button my pants, only holding them up with my belt. After returning to Canada, my mother saw my chubby face and said in relief, "Oh thank God. You ate." Yes you will be fed.
Hahahha that's amazing!
Lol
Yes, that's exactly how it is😂😂😂
Ha! Reminds me of what happens when I visit my many relatives in Ireland!
That goes in Poland as well. "Don't you dare to refuse food from granny" LOL
We also have a monument dedicated to the potato in Šenčur, and kids enjoy a one-week school holiday at the end of October, known as "potato holidays". 🥔😀
I know you guys you are my country logo
I loved this!! I'm American.. But my grandparents are from Slovenia they came here in there's 20s. Everything you said is so true! I laughed so hard..love it!
Love your videos, your sense of irony is brilliantly portrayed, comic timing to perfection. I am learning Slovenian, because yes, I fell in love when I visited. Every time I ordered a drink, meal, or asked directions, I tried my best to talk in Slovenian. People were really great about the way I butchered your language which is beautifully complicated. Not giving up! Learning 1st and 4th Sklon, love declensions, irregular verbs, etc. Have subscribed to your channel, keep the videos coming 🤗
My wife's parents came to Canada from Slovenia so we have visited a number of times. And absolutely, food and alcohol are always put in front of you when visiting family and friends there. And potatoes? On the first day of our most recent visit this summer we helped our cousin, & her whole family, harvest potatoes. Shoes off, toes in the mud, we helped gather hundreds of pounds of potatoes. The beautiful, friendly people are the most memorable thing about this wonderful country.
People of Slovenië are not only friendly but well educated , polite and modest too. I go to Austria and Slovenia this summer. Thank you for the nice video 👍🤗
Omg I started watching you because I wanted to learn more about my heritage! Oh you deliver and soooo much more! Thank you! My grandparents came here from Slovenia and today you explained so much lol! People think I’m Italian cus I’m always cooking and feeding them! Lol! We enjoy our beverages lol now I know it’s in my blood😂
We had our vacations in Slovenia 2 years ago. Seven amazing days with non-stop sightseeing, drinking, and having fun. What an amazing country this is! Yes they almost all speak English, are fanatic with their natural landscape, and have very good road network. We loved every minute there. Greetings from Athens!
Hello from Slovenija
My wife from Medvode makes the coffee on our stovetop. My friend's and I always called this campfire coffee because we make it this way when hunting in the mountains
Poz iz Rhode Islanda! Croatian-American here with roots in Istra and Kvarner. Visited Ljubljana for the first time about a month ago and your video is spot on 😂😂😂 Made a new follower out of me 🤘
My boyfriend and I (Americans) went to Slovenia last year for 2 weeks and loved it so much we are heading back there in a week! Such an amazing place for people that love spending time in nature and enjoying wonderful food and wine.
I'm from Macedonia and my dad lives in Bohinj Slovenia. I'm planning to visit him soon
After 100 + years of only having our father's (actual) name on his birth certificate (Vremsak) I found his family in Slovenia in 2013. My brother and I have been to visit 3 times. We fell in love with Slovenia the first visit, and have only fallen even more in love with it since. Our family has been very hospitable and warm, in spite of (I presume) their initial skepticism about "the American relatives with a different surname. While trying to understand their caution about Americans (we don't have the best reputation in some places because of American corporate greed and other forms of imperialism), they are welcoming and we always feel very very welcome in Slovenia. Not just our family, but Slovenes in general are very warm and genuinely hospitable, glad to share their beautiful country with any and all who treat their precious earth with respect and love.
GO to visit, enjoy the warmth of the Slovene people. !!
What a life story! Glad you found your fam! And glad you found Slovenia a great place to return to!
Nice job! I’m a huge cycling fan and watching Tadej win the Giro got me thinking about a cycling vacation. He seems like such a great guy. Your video reinforced that although I was fooled into worrying about what you were going to present initially. Thanks for your advice. I am definitely going to plan a trip!
Absolutely correct. I am Austrian living near the border and having many colleagues at work are from Slovenia I can only confirm your info.
Barbs make me not only wanna move to Slovenia but BE Slovenian!
We ARE the cool kids 😂
Most amazing video on a country... Will apply for the visa coming week, and meet Barbara😂
"WE DON'T HAVE STARBUCKS and you are gonna get more food and drinks than you can get", That's the heaven to me 😍
That’s what a cesp people thinks.
Wellcome to Slovenija 🎉❤🎉😊
@@aljaklapsicmonroe thank you a lot 😎👍🍻🎉🥳
No Starbucks.....Is this Heaven?
No, it's Slovenia!!!
If you have local coffee shops and they have comfortable couches and chairs that feel like couches I have a reason to go!
I clicked on the like button as soon as the video started, as I knew it would be good fun and i would learn something.
But by the end of the video I missed something extra, like an applause button.
TH-cam should definitely have an applause button for videos like this.
You have just increased my desire to visit Slovenia.
¡Saludos from Spain!
OH MY GOSH, that's so sweet. I gotta recommend "applause button" to TH-cam 😂
@@TheBarbaraHorvat👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
No Starbucks sounds good. Last cup of coffee I bought from them was probably five years ago and that was to see if they were still as horrible as they were in the past.
They're not that good. I like their cold brew nitro but anything else is a miss I think :')
I went to Slovenia a year ago, September 2022. Visited Bled, Maribor, Koper and Ljubljana. It was an amazing experience, and yes it is an outdoor paradise. I did learn to order Kava and most important; pivo, prosim. I only scratched the surface so I see another visit in the future. Thank you for all your content.
Živjo Barbara! Kmalu se selim v Slovenijo. Slovenia is a wonderful country, every time I go there I am totally fascinated by nature.
We intended to go on holidays to Slovenia for the first time this year (mid August) to then shortly before arriving (by car from an intermediate stay-over in Germany) receive a cancellation request by the resort due to the extreme rain and the inundiations that this caused.
Despite the impact and devastation caused by the bad weather we received a prompt refund and recently even received the cancellation fee as initially promised (well insuranced I guess).
We will definitely give it another try on one of the next occasions!
I hope nobody lost their lives and that the region will fully recover from this disaster! We offered to help the resort clean up and prepare the remaining accomodation but the situation was developing quickly and became too dangerous and we did not want to burden the emergency services with our presence.
Very informative.....and you make me laugh. Thank's Barbara.....i'm hoping to visit your country this year. David.
Slovenian landscapes are like walking in a fairytale. I loved visiting Slovenia. It is such a beautiful place! And the people were very nice. I will say that when I visited, I was in a rural area outside of Zuzemberk, and many of the locals did not speak English, especially older people. I learned enough Slovenian to get by but I struggled, and I'm sure the locals found it difficult to understand me, but they were very patient.
I'm sorry to tell you but in bigger Slovenian city you will hardly find any Slovenians most people are Albanians or Bosnians you can hardly hear Slovenian language 😢😢
The people that I spoke to were indeed Slovenian, but it was a very rural area, with lots of farmland. They were older people, though. They spoke Slovene to me, and they were very kind.@@bernie5951
@jonathanjars yea, true.
I never knew how much I wanted to visit Slovenia until today.
I have been looking for a channel like yours forever!! My great-grandparents were from Slovenia but fell under the pressure to "assimilate" into America, so only snippets of our heritage survived (thankfully living in Cleveland helped with this a bit), but I'm always seeking ways to connect with tradition, culture, etc. SO grateful for all your shares!
Hey Barbara! I love your humour! My parents are from Primorska. I can’t wait to visit my relatives again. 😊
Hello! Very pleasant and funny presentation of Slovenia,a country I hope to visit in the near future
I moved away from Slo when i was like 18-19 and i came back like 10 yrs later. your videos are helping me heal my relationship with Slovenia. I hope that makes sense xD Love your content
Slovenians are friendly and helpful people! I always have a great time when I am there. Big hug from your Croatian neighbor!
An old Croat once told me, recalling the Slovenians in the Yugoslav army in the 1950's. "Slovenci su zajebani". Slovenians only cared about Slovenians.
@@vih-qq9pmnije to. Pa svi smo se pomalo grupisali po nacionalnosti.
you're hilarious!! thank you for this!
I started watching you because of your energy and quirkiness, and now I watch to learn about Slovenia. Curses! Now I'm tricked into learning new things! LOL
If only I could. Sounds like a good time. Imagine actually meeting the humans responsible for Barbara's presence on this planet.
One day you might!!
You dont want to meet her father ;)
I was blown away our Slowenian waiter actually spoke german AND Austrian.😅 (He demonstrated it) you are a very multilingual nation.
My wife from Medvode speaks 7 languages and son 16 years old speaks 5
bravo barbara. odličan video. pozdrav iz dalmacije. subscribed and liked.
Gee what a lovely looking place is Slovenia and the people sound amazing....and you do look slightly annoyed with a bit of depression, but that's not the case, you being the warm hearted funny person I know from your videos, which always give me a smile and a nice feeling. Now in Australia we speak in a very nasal way hardly opening our mouth because an open mouth means swallowing a fly, we are always waving our hands shewing flies away so much it's called the Australian salute....that's our national look and feel.
LOL…. This is great! Loved it! So accurate
lol I love listening to your stories.....
I definitely want to go. I know that I have cousins on both grandparents sides. I have studied the language and I am researching immigration records and birth certificates. It is a matter of money.
I do not drink coffee so I might have a problem, but on the other hand I can eat an amazing amount of food at one sitting. Luckily I was raised by second generation immigrants who kept a lot of their Slovene ways.
The personality thing is something that even goes for my family. We are all assumed to be upset or sad while we’re just enjoying a little quiet time inside our heads.
VERY well done, Barbara! You are one VERY FUNNY lady!! You can show me around Slovenia anytime!!
You are SOOOO funny! Hilarious! With great info both formal and informal about Slovenians.
You are spot on. Both my parents were born there & left in the late 50's. I was born shortly after their arrival in Canada. Slovenian was my first language until I started school. I have been there twice. In 89 for 5 weeks while still under Communist rule & again in 2011 for 3 weeks after it joined the EU. I have a lot of family living there. Been to many places throughout this beautful country but there is still lots to explore. People are friendly & the food is great. Hope to get back soon for another visit.
Interesting fact: Slovenia is one of the rare countries where for fourth time in a row a new party formed 3 months before elections winns. Comunist rule ended in name only, same people hold strings in the background. The leader is promoted as new messiah/Steve Jobs/wunderkind by media, while the real rullers rulle from backstage. When voters become dissilusioned by the puppet, popularity drops, the eternal elite finds new single use savior of the nation (new face!). Rinse and repeat. Recipe works, why change it?
As a consequence of things not improving many young Slovenians are emmigrating, however there are many people from ex-Yugoslavian republics/Kosovo happy to replace them...
Živjo Barbara!!! 👋 Greetings from yet another Slovenian soul “lost” in a foreign land. I love your videos. They make me miss Slovenia ❤️ but they also make me laugh and I can only nod to what you’ve been saying. Really nice job!
Love your videos Barbs, especially your sarcastic humour which i can relate too. Thank you for doing such a good publicity for our country... Like that we need even more crowd around Bled and Bohinj lake 🙄. Anyway, proud of you and keep up the great work. Oh yeah, 'support local'... Awesome mantra 👍.
This video was AMAZING! You are hilarious and your sarcasm and subtle innuendos are awesome, especially since English is not your native language (I think anyway). You have definately mastered the English language. I'm traveling to your country in about 6 weeks and am very excited. Thanks for this fantastic video.
That was fun to listen to so thank you for that! I liked your spirit and genuine advice!
We are in France and looking to moving to Slovenia although still figuring out logistics and so on. We would like to seek a life where there is no Starbucks in sight! Or anything of that nature in fact!
I love Slovenia, so many nice people and i half-understand slovenian❤
Nice?? Potem me še nisi srečal!! 🤪
If you don't have a fatal heart attack after drinking your coffee, then it wasn't Slovenian.
Some older relatives went to Slovenia in the 1960s to see where our ancestors came from (a village near Cerknica), and they were told by people they met not to go there because “that’s where the witches are.” I hope to go there before I die…
You can also see witch Ursula every year at carneval in time of Pust - in the end of februar or first half of march. It is awsome and crazy. And Cerknica is one of interesting place in that time in Slovenia. 🙂
Is the village Selšček? Cause that’s where my family is from and I’ve been told there’s witches around 😂
100% true. The witches gather at the top of mount Slivnica. Been there. It’s very magical.
This video made me laugh, love your sense of humor 😂 being from Norway, another country with small population, we actually have quite a lot of similarities I learned.
When I visited Slovenia in 2018 and asked for where I should visit the coast, everybody told me "Croatia". Last week I visited Piran and was a little bit disappointed by the people in 2018 who told me to go to Croatia.
Piran is nice, but you can not compare Croatian coast and islands with our short coast.
And I am Slovenian 100%.
@@boyan64Tako je! The most Slovenians dont like her mini beton coast haha!
I was trying to figure out how I found your channel. You were touring the USA when I signed up. So I guess it’s my turn to come to your country.
I would love to visit, but I will have to settle for some authentic potato recipes. By the way, I support potatoes as a standalone food! Thanks for all your advice...
Let me know if you follow the official recipe!
In a Slovenian town Šenčur there is also a monument dedicated to a potato.
holy crap Slovenia looks like a great place to go, the roast potatoes was the sealer, and I'm not taking the piss. it looks like an awesome place ..... very cool .
roasted potatoes are lifeeeeee
I absolutely LOVED this video! My grandmother and her parents moved to Eveleth, MN from Logatec during World War I because my great-grandfather wanted to avoid conscription. It’s interesting to see how these facts have survived to this day in my family (we make potica for Christmas and Easter still following the original recipe they brought with them). One day I’d love to go back there to meet all the family that stayed there because it’s such a beautiful country and I think I’d fit right in because as these facts are SO true even here with my family in the US! Najlepša Hvala!
Thanks so much Barbara! ❤
I believe THIS is the new standard work for visitors to Slovenia.
Gratitude after seeing you for the first time!
Cheers from Germany, Stefan
Love your sense of humor, thanks for making my day a little brighter!!
Great videos just learned my closest relative was from Slovenia Dolge Njive 600 BC. how awesome is that now I'm learning all i can. so now ill have to make a pilgrimage and thank those ancestors.
Visited relatives in Ljubljana in 2014. Drove around the country. Had a great time. Ljubljana, Koper, Bled, Ptuj, etc. Burek & Lasko.
Oh boy,i have a 3 month work trip to slovenia(then again im croatian so not too far) coming up,that landscape is gonna be a joy to explore!
Those 7 olympic medals still seemed like a small number. So, I looked it up and it's actually 40 medals for Slovenia alone. Or 52 medals in total for all Slovenian athletes since 1912, which is even more impressive :)
Thanks for the warnings.
Sounds like I will be planning a visit on my next trip to Europe.
Great post! Added to my must visit list!
Roast potatoes, leftovers, coffee and amazing landscapes, on board for all that. Sounds great being Slovenian.
'You learn to love those if you are a tortured artist.' 😆 Took me a while to find this channel Barbara. So glad I did.
I absolutely love you and glad i am relocating to Slovenia in a weeks time . When i lived 10 years ago fpr a year in Slovenia it was magical...a narnia on earth. Happy youtube brought you in my life ❤
Greetinga from Poland Barbara!
I've never been to Slovenia but your description of homeland makes me wanna visit fellow slavic country.
Maybe a honeymoon trip in near future :)
Some thoughts about expression on Your face and tone of voice:
We have literally the same situation in Poland ;D Everybody I pass by on the street has a depressed look by Western standards. It can be troubling for many visitors who are used to seeing happy people saying hello when met during a walk.
Most people (like 99% of population) also use soft, monotonous voice or sound very tired. Imho it's a strange quirk that came in 1945 with communism. Basically an Eastern Bloc thing that can be fixed with alcohol and good food on the table among friends and loved ones.
Contrary to most I tend to smile a lot without a reason and draw attention with my ginger hair resulting in many Poles thinking I am a tourist from Scandinavia or Ireland.
I do not know really why I am in that smiling 1% that breaks the depressing impression but I try everyday to make someone smile or make their day better by being polite, small talk or simple gestures like a helping hand with carrying stuff in my job or holding a door for someone.
Anyway I urge You to visit Poland someday, it's a beautiful country with colorful history and culture. Contrary to most EU countries we suffered no terrorist attacks ( we love our zeros), there are no "nogo zones", public transport and streets are safe and clean.
Much love from Poland !!!
With the inflation being what it is you will not see many happy people on the streets now, at least not in America. People were happy when life was really good, because there was literally nothing to worry about in a life of an average person.
Also, in the USA women would always smile more than men. For men to be smiling was always fairly unusual, even when life was good, so when I was smiling (because I was very happy with my awesome job and a new awesome life in America in early 2000s) people literally called me “smiley” or “sunshine”…
This was amazing! Can't wait to visit!
Gave my brother a coffee percolator.
In just four days he turned one serving of grounds into a heart attack in easy to swallow liquid form.

I wondered where they had gone to.
XD
Just have to say- this one had me laughing, always appreciate ypur creativity, but this was you on the top of your game. Loved it.
Thanks!! We might go to Slovenia this summer... !
Slovenia and its people sound a lot like Ireland and the Irish.
Except for the part about Olympic medals ...
Greetings from Cork!
True that. I was thinking the same thing.
I'm Irish and they are more like Finns than Irish. I've lived in Finland for 30 years
Finns are the world's biggest consumers of coffee ☕ 10-14 cups per day
Your never more than 20 meters from a Finnsh metal band
Potatoes. Its not a meal without Potatoes
Finns only open up after 3,4 hrs of alcohol consumption
Communal saunas are normal but not mixed.
Only idiots like actually learnt Finnish 85% of Finns can speak English better than native speakers but choose not to...
Finns always look see life as half empty except when they beat Sweden at winter sports.
Slovenia is a mixed culture of German/Austrian/Hungarian/Croatian & Italian. What is there Irish for you?
Slovenians have been here since prehistoric times. We’ve had other cultures in other times.
@@tonianzlovar7590 Most Slovenians are Hungarians, Croats & other Slaws.

Your homeland is definitely on my bucket list Barb. The landscapes look so beautiful. Ansell Adams would’ve loved it there ❤
As always love your informative, amusing video. Your manner is so engaging, I'd probably watch you read the back of a cereal box. 2 thumbs up
Great humour (and info)
When 4yo I was in Liliana in a house of lady, who had a parrot. Parrot seat on my sholder and told me: "Daj lubiczku" (or how you spell it in Slovenian?) and I did. The bird painfully pecked my lip and I ended up crying.
2:19 "fun" fact: Manner Neapolitaner have their first written mention in a document from 1898.
And back then the hazelnuts came from Napoli (Neapel in german).
(At a time where slovenes would have considered the place these delicious things come from, as the main capitol of their country)
From all the athletes you mentioned i only knew the two ski ladies.
There are famous slovene ski jumpers too that you didn't mention but i don't remember their name.
And you got one of biggest fmaous ski jumping hills too in Planica.
I am Croatian, and recently I was in Ljubljana for the first time, I am delighted with the city. Especially since all the waiters are Bosnians, so I was able to have great communication and get exactly what I wanted (little joke, or not).
#7 Can confirm! I went to Metaldays in 2017, and it was glorious!
30 plus celsius outside, and the rivers at the festival site average 8 degrees and 3 degrees celsius respectively. Taking the plunge is initially like puberty in reverse with the sudden shock...
There were many inflatable unicorns, swans and other things. We had a (Rock, or in this case Metal) lobster 😃
Sounds like fun. I hope to go some day.
I'm sure you will!
💕
Very entertaining. You have great comic timing.
That festival looks like fun!
you are an inspiration for all American men
Love your presentation,😂 really wanna visit Slovenia after watching your video
Best ambassador around…. Just gotta love this lady and her vids!
You had me at the food and alcohol. And the landscape obviously. But you sealed the deal with the roast potatoes.
Oh and can’t forget the coffee.

My Mother & Father were part of the Rebel Clan that escaped to the Great Republic of Texas. So I’m one of the few Slovenes who live in the Republic of Texas. I have many fond memories of spending the summers in Cleveland with my Grandparents. I enjoyed the homemade Kelbasa made by my Uncle Beanie & Grandmother’s Strudel & Poticia. Slovenians are the nicest & warmest people on the planet. You will gain weight when around the Slovenes. The beer & wine we shared with family were the greatest.
