Thanks Nic, you did the other version after I requested this - glad you could give it a second outing! Crowded House is one of the greatest bands to evolve in Australia, love 💕 all they do is amazing, Neil is the kingpin. P.S. It’s the vegemite that preserves your vocal cords! 😂

I watched this whole thing some time ago. Some show where they had random musicians on stage together, chatting and playing together. Roddy Frame was the guy in the middle, from one of my favourite bands Aztec Camera, from Scotland, but I don't remember who the guy on the right was. They would take turns playing their songs and the others would join in. Neil is amazing live, recorded or any other way you hear him.

I once heard a DJ intro a Crowded House song, describing a "hopeful melancholy" in the music. That stayed with me as a great way to describe the elation and regret one hears in Finn's songwriting.

I can't answer your question other than to suggest they all came through the Australian pub set. You either sounded good live or no one turned up ever again but you did just list some great talents that have managed to stay relevant for several decades so perhaps its about talent, hard work and longevity. There must have been something in the water in the 70s and 80s in Australia...except i never got to drink it lol

Roddy Frame was doing the higher pitched backing, which was sublime (of course). Graham Gouldman was doing the basic chorus backing. It was a great bit of hardly rehearsed harmonising.
I watched and recorded this episode when it first aired on the BBC. The other Songwriters' Circle programmes were great (thinking of Richard Thompson), but this one was the best.
I think I still have the tape, but no video recorder! Luckily most of it's on TH-cam.

You're right, it is (at least partly) something in the air. There are legendary stories of famous opera singers arriving here for the first time and exclaiming about how dry our atmosphere is. They feel it working on their throats and start guzzling water to balance that. Following that logic through, people who live here and are conditioned to our atmosphere learn (maybe through formal teaching, maybe through organic trial & error) how to look after their voices really well so that they do last. If they don't, their voices break down a lot faster, so they don't end up with the big catalogues of work. I've heard plenty of community amatuer singers call it age, and yes partly that would be true, but is also, literally, "something about the air". You either look after your voice really well, or you lose it.

Neil Finn is an extraordinary musician, extremely talented and a long, successful career but I think he would’ve been buzzed and humbled to have Graham Gouldman singing harmonies to one of his songs. An absolute legend of the biggest era of popular music. An unsung hero for sure, along with his mate, Eric Stewart. Do some 10cc reactions someday you’ll see what I mean.

This clip is from a tv program called The Songwriter's Circle. It's where they get 3 or 4 artists up and they each sing eachothers song's. Neil is from Crowded House. Roddy Frame, in the middle from Aztec Camera and Graham Gouldmann from 10cc. That's why you see Graham looking at Neil trying to look at his mouth to harmonize with.
It would be similar to saying, okay Beyonce, T-Boz, and Nicole Scherzinger pick 3 songs from each of your bands and sing them acoustically in front of this audience thanks lol you have an hour to practice lol.. which would never happen nowadays haha

When Phil Judd left Split End, Tim Finn sent a message home to Neil in NZ telling him they needed him urgently. So Neil came. As Tim was the main song writer, no one was keen on doing songs Neil wrote. So Neil published his songs, and Jimmy and the Boys had a smash hit with They Won't Let My Girlfriend Talk To Me. So next thing you know, Split Enz started going through his catalogue. Imagine two fantastic song writers in the same band!!

In 1977 Neil joined the band his brother Tim co-founded in 1973, Split Enz. In 1980 he had his first big success as a singer/songwriter for the band with "I got you" which was a big hit in Australia and New Zealand, here's the official clip th-cam.com/video/wiqBlKnb91A/w-d-xo.html . He followed that up In 1981 with "One step ahead" and two years later with his biggest success for the band with the release of "Message to my girl" which really put him on the map, here's the clip th-cam.com/video/O6YD4rjVIO8/w-d-xo.html. A year later Split Enz disbanded and the following year he formed Crowded House with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester and the rest is history, Ps, the guy to his far left is Graham Gouldman, the last remaining original member of 10CC and a legendary songwriter, he co-wrote their biggest hit "I'm not in love" with original lead vocalist Eric Stewart, check out this live clip from 2011 th-cam.com/video/ii6pRq0-mhY/w-d-xo.html cheers

Yeah who is that guy on the right? He was a bit of a distraction.... anyway Neil was amazing as per. And loved the reaction also as per... your videos are great dude! ✌🏼💜 🇦🇺

Everyone forgets, Neil is a Kiwi, not an Aussie. Have a look at Split Enz, that where it all started.

The harmony by Graham Gouldman is intentionally delayed he is not just singing slow. Go and listen to the original, while not exactly the same, it is an homage to the original arrangement.

Graham Gouldman from 10cc, legend in his own right on the far right. Anyone saying he dont know his stuff is barking up the wrong tree altogether. Maybe look into their stuff if you are unsure. They may have had an accoustic issue but it sounded fine to me.

@@HelenBeeee He wasn't way off, it was a live set and he may not have rehearsed the song. 10cc was a brilliant 70's band and he has written songs for many topline artists. Just stop you dont know what you are talking about.

If you like Australian bands/artists, you should definitely check out Peter Furler -- great vocalist, musician and performer. He's a Christian artist -- was in The Newsboys and is now solo.

Ronny in the middle was doing the "aaaAAAaahh" choir/high harmony in the chorus and the guy on the right was taking the low, lyrical harmony (not technical terms - just trying to describe them)
I think the guy on the right would've sounded a lot better if his mic was lowered to blend in more. He was overpowering the other two in the chorus which, (a) took away from Neil's melody, and, (b) defeats the purpose of a *harmony*.
