I'm a big fan of martinu. I have his piano concerto on CD. I didn't realize he had such a wide body of work. I love symphony # 6. So awesome I'm a big fan of the neoclassical style of the first half of the 20th century

Martinu's 6th Symphony is mysterious and subterranean; but certainly not 'awesome'. Have we all noticed that today, everything - and I mean everything - is either 'awesome' or 'cool'?

Martinu is the most underrated composer of the 20th Century. Instead of hearing his vast output of works in our concert halls we are subjected to the boring( in most parts) Haydn and Schubert symphonies and other less than great composers. Martinu's 6 symphonies are the peak of his creativity and this 5th is a masterpiece. Belohlavek is a terrific interpreter of his native Czech music. The only problem with this recording is the orchestra. The BBC Symphony Orchestra just cannot get the depth of feeling for this work. They should just stick to Elgar, Vaughan-Wlliams and Delius.

you took the word out of my mouth, I agree completely... there are still some far underrated composers like Charles Tournemire, whose symphonies for orchestra are not really what I mean, although they are beautiful (especially the 6th), but his late organ works.

Well conducted, but such dull and bland orchestral playing as expected from this awful fourth-rate BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Criticism from a man who can't spell symphony?

The BBC SO are a third-rate orchetra and always have been: that is an empirical fact, not a subjective judgement.@@N_Loco_Parenthesis

I just played Volume 2 of Somm's Vaughan Williams Live with Sir Adrian Boult, with both the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestras in 1945 and 1946 and it is awfully embarrassing to hear the two orchestras side-by-side in that the Bostonians are in a different class: the BBC Symphony Orchestra have always been a third-rate orchestra and I have been listening to the BBC Symphony Orchestra now for 50 years; your ears are in denial; your ears lack criticism.
