  • The Detroit Red Wings, after signing their RFA's, will be close to the cap for the '24-'25 season. This has some Red Wings fans concerned they are already in cap hell. But are they really? #LGRW

    I'm with you guys... I'm not a fan of Copp's contract, or Holl's contract, but I'm also happy we didn't just throw money and term at UFAs hitting the market this year. I'm happy with the slow burn we're taking, as opposed to throwing that money and term at a guy who might get $7m for seven years, but only be good for 3-4 of 'em. But I'd also argue that it doesn't matter whether we bridge Ray and Mo or not, not in the end, anyway. The players undoubtedly want the bridge, and the front office will want the long term deal. But it doesn't matter because, by the time they get re-signed again in a few years, there will be plenty of cap space to compensate for it.

    37 million more cap space in the next 2 years while having the core signed doesnt seem like they are cap strapped at all.

    I personally think it would be smart when extending Raymond and Sieder, both long term but off set, one of them 8yr and other at 7yrs. Or 7yrs, 6yrs. That way at the end of those contracts Yzerman wouldnt have to deal with both of them again at the same

  • @nvsblty

    Yzerman has done a great job staggering the expiration of these placeholder veteran contracts and aligning them with the expiration of our top prospects' ELCs. the plan/structure is clear if you're paying attention.

    Guys, Yzerman DOESNT do long-term on contracts after ELC. That's just not going to happen. He didn't for Kucherov, point, noone. 8 years is NOT going to happen.

    • @user-rw9rs6di9n

      8 years would be now. Not at their UFA start point. You sign long term while RFA now to give you flexibility at the mid point when the team is looking to add finishing touches. The cap goes up as well so the contracts eat up less percentage of the cap -making it a good deal by percentage.

    You are “cap strapped” when you’re paying teams high round draft picks for cap dumps i.e. Walman, Fabbri

    • @DominicR-19

      A 4th is a high draft pick? I agree a 2nd was a bit much but it was nashvilles second that originally belonged to Tampa so even that wasn’t that high of a second, nevertheless that high of a pick. And if you haven’t noticed we are no longer in a situation where we need draft picks that aren’t our own it just doesn’t make sense for where the team is at now

    • @AceMatthew25414

      @DominicR-19 A 4th to unload a good player is still rough.. I liked the Taresenko signing until I found out about the Fabbri trade, blue line got worse and depth wasn't fixed.

    • @billjohansson88

      A team is "cap strapped" when they need to do any of the following. Cost-cutting trades (e.i. including picks as sweetness) or buy out a player's contract (often bad contracts). Shed salary via offseason trades including picks (e.i. Fabbri) and finally when a team has less than 5/Mil left in pure cap space to spend at the upcoming TDL.

    • @davidlaffin5747

      There won't be enough money left to sign Veleno! You dumped 2 contracts by giving away draft picks. These moves were done because you signed some bad contracts.

    • @tedmarling6

      You overvalue a 4th round pick. The going price for a cap dump is a second rounder. St Louis had to do give up the same. Fortunately it was an additional pick which lessens the blow.

  • @davidlaffin5747

    I think Seider and Raymond will not want to sign long-term deals! I think that is probably the sticking point in signing these guys.

    • @jennifermorris9985

      It's absolutely possible. They could want short term deals that will allow them to take advantage of the rising cap in a few years.

  • @jimmiebull1

    always there is risk involved. Possibly performance regression. Possibly injury and then regression from injury possibly long term. These things should not be ignored.

  • @seguinryan

    We're not "cap strapped".
    Yzerman has had his ideal time frame in place and it's quite apparent when you see how our contracts are structured to expire at the 25-26 off season.
    The 26-27 season is obviously where Yzerman expects to have the prospects up at the next level and we will have plenty of options whether that be with solely our prospects or some FA transactions.
    Is it bad to give up a 2nd rounder in a cap dump? Yes, not ideal. 2-3 other teams did the same thing.

  • @jamesreed2475

    I dont think the number are on your side of the argument. If they both signed 3 yr $5m bridge deals and then 7 year even $8.5 or $9m deals thats a total value of $78m for 10 yrs. An 8 yr $8m is $64m. I dont see either of them signing for years 9 and 10 at $7m AAV which is what would be needed to make the money work as early 30s players still in their prime. If they sign an 8 yr deal now. Bridge deal on the front end is almost always gonna cost the team less. Unless you think we're 3 years away from $10m D-men or that Raymond will score 40-50 goals each of the next 2-3 years??

  • @davideggleston1031

    Obviously Seider and Raymond are not satisfied with Yzerman's long term contract offers. That's why a bridge contract may be needed. Even with our two best young players and with veterans in their prime, Walman,, Sprong, Ghost and Fabbri (58 goals) we didn't make the playoffs last year. The team will regress this year and Lalonde admitted as much. That's why we give Yzerman crap.

  • @kennethrussell1320

    Cap strapped? 😂😂😂 No. Every team has to dump a little cap from time to time to mak4 moves. Having a few bad contracts comibg off the books in a few years is no big deal.

    Yzerman has made some bad contract deals. We thought bad contracts left when Ken Holland was run out of the job. Would be a lot better off if he had got more of the future stars on the ice with fewer veteran signings. Hopefully Husso and Copp will play great and they can be dumped with the wings paying a chunk of their contracts.
