It’s the only reverb I’ve ever owned and I’m happy with the sound but it’s unlabeled secondary functions prevent me from tweaking much. This is far more encouraging with its very simple layout.
Totally agree with you on all counts! Gorgeous and the "everything on the front panel" layout is definitely ideal. I'm not at all a fan of secondary/hidden features (especially ones you might want to change regularly) so I get you there. Im loving it... my only question is why? when you have stuff like big sky/empress pedals that offer much more option for the same price range. Idk, real question... when its an algorythm/digital, id go for the best, what makes this a better buy?
Fair question to ask. I think so much of it comes down to personal opinion and your individual taste. What would be the best to you might be the worst for someone else (I've learned that time and time again while doing these videos). Why would someone use a pedal at all when there are devices with built-in reverb, or plug-ins in your DAW? Like lots of us, I like the hands-on controls way more than software for example, and I definitely like some algorithms more than others. Something like the Big Sky definitely covers a lot of ground, and from what I can tell (never used one) it does the shimmer thing REALLY well, and that's kinda the go-to for it, even if it has plenty of other sounds on board. For one, I like the Ultrasheer for the specific flavor of reverb it provides (I cover the rest of what I like about it in my final thoughts section of the video), but I can't say it would be a better buy over any others since it's all subjective anyway (as are budgets as well). What I can say is that I really like what the Ultrasheer provides and whether or not it's for you, that's something only a shopper can decide for themselves, even if it would be easier/a cop out for me to just say "it's awesome, buy it!" haha. Hopefully the video allows you to hear it in some different contexts and can help you make that decision a little easier. =)
OK after owning everything that you have mentioned. This 100% sounds better than any of the empress algorithms. The big sky is great but it’s a little more synthetic if you want the 1978 plate sound it’s done honestly perfectly then this is the option for the price. The most letdown I ever was was when I owned the Empress reverb just what a total let down that was, after all the hype

Sadly I'm not an authority on the CXM 1978 from Chase Bliss, since I haven't been able to use one yet myself, but from what I understand what it has in added tone-sculpting capability, it lacks the vibrato of the Ultrasheer. I would also say it's tough to make that call for someone else anyway, but what I always suggest, especially because the used market is so strong these days, that you should just pick one up (of either) to try it out if you're interested. You'll likely always be able to sell whichever you decide isn't for you, and nothing beats a hands-on. I personally have kept some effects that have a lot of overlap because of any number of reasons, but sometimes there's just that "ness" that makes you want to have something around even if it isn't exactly "necessary" haha. Maybe I'll loop back to this if I get a chance to try a CXM 1978 and I can weigh in with added authority, but for now, I know I definitely love the Ultrasheer! =)
Hello, chiming in your say I have both and I use the vongon more these days. I’ve had both long enough for the honeymoon period to be over. I’d consider selling my CXM before this tbh. This is simple and straight forward. They both sound incredible but you have to decide if you’re a tweaker or you just want some nice verb. Good luck
