I recently sold most of my gear because it was just collecting dust. I kept my nightsky because even just using my wife's electric piano and acoustic guitar I can make some pretty killer sounds, it makes it just fun to play around with it.
23:34 that is an important information! They could only demand an update of the review if your review contains false statements or when they have provided a fix for the issue. Don’t want to buy from a company that tries to take down critical reviews of their crappy products.
Hey Ben. I think you should remember that loopop has already cornered the market on faceless, features and functionality only reviews. People come to your channel for your opinion. And there's good reason to want to hear it. You blend your feelings and love for music with scientific persuit and people enjoy that.
The NightSKy is an absolute monster of a pedal that allows me to create a vast landscape with almost no effort. Wild what we can get at our feet for just a few hundred bucks! Cosmos is absolutely intense and weird and I love it. What a neat concept that I did not even think of.
While I love your insights and commentary on your gear stuff, if a “muted Benn” gear exploration video they also gets us some more of your awesome cinematography and still lets you play with gear for us…. Then hell yes, let’s do it.
Best video of the Nightsky! I always enjoy your videos! As an owner of one, it’s always refreshing to get reminded how awesome something is from someone else’s perspective.
The soundtrack to Traffic - I’ve listened to it more than I can count. It was awesome to find out that David Torn played a large part in its composition, something like that.
Oh wow. I've had my Nightsky for over a year and a half and I didn't know about the resonance or some of those other hidden features. Thank you! That will open up what was already an amazing pedal even further.
Night Sky sounds fantastic, I'd diminished it at a time of feeling tired of the octave up shimmer, but there's a lot more to explore. Appreciate the run down.
Just found your channel and since I am a reverb junky like so many others watching, I have to subscribe. Thanks for the wonderful way your brain works 👍
I had to double check my ears because I was hearing the jazz background music. Thought maybe I had something else playing in the background. Then I realized it was your video. Then I thought “Hmmm that’s unusual”. And then I had to send you a resounding “THANK YOU for using something other than lo-fi hip hop or vocal chop beats in your video!!”
Great video, pleasure to watch as usual! big SOMA 'fanboy' here, love and often use 'Cosmos' but also Strymon's 'StarLab' as well as Hologram's 'Microcosm', definitely among my all time favourite effect units
tldr don't take that video down, that company is childish to even ask that, love both of these reverb vids! In just about any other industry, mistakes are remedied with customer service. We simply can't reward such behaviour(which means buy it used, the only consumer option when we the plebs disagree with corporate choices) dot sadface.
Powerful stuff. These tools bring tricks done in the mixing studio into live situations on the pedalboard. I am currently designing my new pedalboard into a more permanent state and in the process started watching pedal order videos, revisiting my notebooks on my previous experiments comparing notes. Reverb is something that suddenly acquired a new meaning for me and this is how I discovered your channel. I am very impressed by the way. So ....I noticed that things I wanted to do to manipulate the reverb space, with multiple pedals to shape it, animate it, compress it, lift or lower it, pan it etc are integrated into functions of single reverb pedals that are recently emerging. The first reverb I noticed did that was the DREADBOX DARKNESS. And here you showed some other stunning examples. This is a big deal because as knowledge grows, the complete pedal order is getting bigger and bigger and more complicated. Pedals like EQ, compressors, delays, reverbs, pitch shifters, etc for those that know can't go in just one place.... and that is too many pedals. So they have to shrink and/or integrate a small pedalboard in themselves. Right? ........Cheers and Thanks!
When I listen to Reich’s phase music, I imagine improvising with something like the Cosmos, then working to transcribe it. Of course it’s simpler; you just write phrases of dissimilar length. But I think of it that way… My brain hurts, but it’s a GOOD brain hurt! Thanks, Benn!

Do I please manufacturers of amps and pedals and keyboards 🎹 and not mention all of those pesky trifles called “things that suck about their products” or do I take a hard stand about the truth as I see it and gain viewer trust and admiration? That you would mention these antithetical dynamics in this video means a lot to me, Benn. Once again with unparalleled skill, aplomb and humility, you show us all some great products and in doing so you save us time and money, with time being the greater of the two. I cannot thank you enough and the Meris Mercury x will be here in 3 days, thanks to you! Much appreciation coming to you from the Pacific Northwest USA!
Today I learned. More about something I have: Nightsky. More about something I want: Cosmos. And even more important: 3 things on a desk can bring joy. Many pieces of this video I just want to put in a looper and live there for a while.
"I had to, like, open the bruise up, and let some of the bruise blood come out to show them" is the full sample, and "come out to show them" is the looped segment
Fwiw, Reich’s Different Trains was a brilliant way to soothe my children when they were babies. To be fair, it soothed me too and, while not the start of my interest in Phase Music, certainly gave my interest a second wind!
I always feel that reverbs that get pitch shifted need to go through another reverb to smooth that out. I bought a Mercury 7 to smooth out the shifting on the Mood and it sounds great. That might make the sequencer on the Night Sky more musical, but otherwise it's a bit naff to my ears...
Seriously, Benn, I am going to miss your demos/reviews/whatever you want to call them. You videos are definitely some of the more interesting ones out there and it's clear to see your love for what you do/demonstrate. Is there no way you can just ignore the arseholes? Anyway, the NightSky sounds awesome. And Cosmos is pretty mind-bending - very cool.
Thank you! The reason I'm not doing "reviews" anymore isn't because of the trolls. The trolls are just a symptom of a larger problem that generally inspires people to spend money rather than making music. I want to inspire people to make music. It sounds I'll be delivering more of the content you like by doing this!
@@BennJordan That's good to hear. And let me tell you something. It's only recently that I've understood how important reverb is in a mix. And it was one of your videos (can't remember which) that opened my eyes. Now, my mixes are starting to sound better (though I'm not going to claim that they're brilliant). So you see, we need your videos, dude.
@@BennJordan this video did that for me. I went away and got out every weird ass preset names only please Melda plugin I own and tried to make it sound like this. I failed, but I created something else that sounds equally bonkers and unlike anything I had ever yet created. Thank you.
I was inspired to set the loop-lengths of the 5 tracks in my Boss RC-505 independent of each other, to see if I can get polyphasic wash going. Haha, yeah. +1 on the inspiration.
Damn it, Jordan! I was literally just saying this afternoon that I think I've scratched all my pedal itches now and then you go and show me the Night Sky. Why!!! Seriously though - excellent video, as always.
The primitive technology guy doesn't speak in a single video and the algorithm puts him out there just fine. And it doesn't make me want to try any of it less ✨
I'm a big fan of my NightSky but would have respected your points if you'd decided it wasn't to your liking. Just keep making content man, we need more positivity in the world.
I don't always like the "no-talking" type gear videos, but i would really look forward to seeing hour take on it. Knobs and Jeremy from RMR (along with some others) both have their own unique and entertaining approaches to those types of videos, and i expect you would be similarly fun and interesting. :)
collector//emitter does pedal demos/reviews in a similar way to what you described at the end where he just shows the pedal and plays guitar into it. Absolutely love his aesthetic and while pedal youtube seems to be smaller than synth youtube (I guess pedals don't have enough LEDs to be exciting) he seems to be doing pretty well. I'd be very curious to see you take on that content personally, even if you relegate to a second channel for algorithm reasons.
As someone fascinated by verbs and layering, this is so fun. I am just getting back into pedals for fx, not just distortion for guitar. It's a big spendy playground :D
Hey! I have a reverb recommendation for you. There's a max for live device called "particle reverb" by a developer named Kentaro. I think he's also ported it to vst. Said reverb is a somewhat simple granular reverb, and i have never managed to make a bad sound with it. I suggest you try it out (if you have time ofc), cause it's magical. thx for the video!
Ooh! I’m jelly of your light green cosmos! I got the original black. Love it so much! I have some fun vids in my channel with it if you’re curious. Using it with synths and my voice.
Was thinking: "He's got a real good taste in Pedals and instruments" - Look back on screen and see Benn Jordan "eating" (or singing after a second look) a Kalimba... XD
Would love to see more tutorials from you on how to compose with these tools, as I feel you've so much to teach beyond the gear reviews that the algos love. I'll search your back catelog for more composing videos.
As a game changer, I would be interested in seeing videos that are about getting creative with a certain device. When you do a presentation about the features, you always stay on a very superficial level. By this, I mean what you can really do with a device. Somebody I can’t remember his name made a video about, the Night Sky where he dug into some of the features and use them extremely creatively, and this sounded like a whole new world. These are musical instruments. It takes time to develop not a mastery, but just a sense of what they can do.
Always been a fan of your more artistic videos that incorporate your beautiful music and interesting photography. So I’m really up on your idea at the end of the video about gear use videos with no talking. Especially if that’s the only way we’ll get to hear you play with new gear in the future (aside from your albums of course).
You are literally a box of talent, Nevtech has some new effects coming out, I would very much like to see what you can do with them. Incredibly talented my friend ❤ loved this.
try and get hold of the discontinued stereo reverb made by crazy circuits called the splash mk II , the mono version is in the dreadbox nyx v1 .. they only made 200 , this is defo my favourite for long reverbs ..
Love your videos my man I stopped watching gear Review stuff a while ago just because I literally have everything I’ve ever wanted and all they do is make me want to buy more shit so anyway all right, let’s get back to the video
People tend to ask why my mixes sound so different than theirs and it’s usually because I’m using reverb like an additional instrument, not just a little fx.
I'm going to be really sad if this is the last time you're doing gear demos. I love watching these. Such a shame the one out of a hundred kill the fun when there's 99 people who really enjoyed the video but never commented anything, but I guess that's just youtube. Something I'd love for you to make a video on is how you listen to reverb and what you listen for since you seem to have such an ear for reverb. I would love to hear you break down what to listen for and how you'd adjust a reverb to create a space, described for someone who tends to hear most reverbs as a mush and struggles to properly utilise it. I myself am a mixer who has spent a lot of time working on this and improving and your insight would probably be eye(ear)-opening 😊
A lot of people seemed to pooh-pooh it when it came out, but I was shrugging and thinking they’re all whack and got one right away. I am a sucker for the shimmery, though.
I went in with the no speaking just tweaking philosophy and I get minimal trollish blow-back. I enjoy just making the music and showing the process. Maybe the alGODRythm doesn't like it, but as you say, F-it. I'm sure with your amazing skills, music only content will be welcomed Benn. I for one, would like to hear it. Keep rocking.
How are you mixing/incorporating these massive effects into a song? Always find myself cluttering everything and when trying to "fix" that, it falls apart
Depends on a song. Sometimes you can sample some highly wet sound and then use it as riser, drop, some adlibs or anything actually. To make it clean - you can just cut it off on the end with some filter
the eq of the trails seems important in mixes. i like to cut the highs off a bit and the lows usually (plug-ins). pedals, hm maybe an eq pedal after the reverb or compress after. dense mixes you won’t benefit exactly from some of the pad sounding reverbs/ gets lost but sometimes that is what works too.
Love your videos, but change of subject here for a second. I really wish I could buy your music (especially Arboreal, but at least 3 or 4 more albums) on vinyl. You blend the most beautiful and interesting sounds together so perfectly. Can't wait to hear what you come out with next.
YES! GIVE US SOUND DEMOS WITH NO VOICE! SHOW US SONIC POSSIBILITIES! In all honesty, videos of you playing with gear (and explaining what you are doing) would be very helpful to a lot of people. Gear demos are, overall, pretty bad, always gravitating towards the same patches, no one says what they are doing, or they keep talking over the sound about something completely unrelated. And that's different than just playing stuff while recording a video. I want to see what gear can do in a practical way, not theoretical one (reading the manual is not as fun as twisting knobs, and imagining sounds is not as good as hearing them). The best part about your "reviews" was the small demos you came up with to show as an example. Watching you fiddling with stuff in creative ways fulfills some sort of content that is lacking on TH-cam's gearsphere. I mean, Red Means Recording used to do something like that and it was great, and it was a bummer when Jeremy moved on to do other stuff (although I'm happy he's being successful in it). I hope there are more people out there that thinks the same. Your little demo with the Soma Cosmos, for instance, was amazing. It would be very awesome to see whole videos like that.
Hologram stopped requesting reviews after a negative one, while Strymon continued to seek feedback. Good on them
Another company shoots itself in the foot.
How have I lived so many years without a cowboy describing the controls of reverb pedals in my life?
that was the peak of gear reviews
I enjoy gear use videos so much more than gear review videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Rarely.. a 20 min feature vid and a 20 min vid exploring their uses are vastly different in concept and composition. Not to mention intention
@659J not really.

I love the Soma Cosmos so much
I really enjoy the content. I love using anything I can to make cool sounds from moms pots and pans to 600$ reverbs.. or better yet both!

...I WALK A LONELY ROAD
(it's even then same key lmao)
pretty damn impressed with nightsky
A lot of people seemed to pooh-pooh it when it came out, but I was shrugging and thinking they’re all whack and got one right away. I am a sucker for the shimmery, though.
never heard it until just now. very impressed with at low tonal stuff@@entropybentwhistle
You communicate your joy well.
I had no idea Jon Hamm was an awesome musician ❤
Not gonna lie, I am amazed by your guitar technique
How are you mixing/incorporating these massive effects into a song? Always find myself cluttering everything and when trying to "fix" that, it falls apart
Depends on a song. Sometimes you can sample some highly wet sound and then use it as riser, drop, some adlibs or anything actually. To make it clean - you can just cut it off on the end with some filter
I use m/s mixing techniques
the eq of the trails seems important in mixes. i like to cut the highs off a bit and the lows usually (plug-ins). pedals, hm maybe an eq pedal after the reverb or compress after. dense mixes you won’t benefit exactly from some of the pad sounding reverbs/ gets lost but sometimes that is what works too.
Wondering if you've every tried the Source Audio Collider
Love your videos, but change of subject here for a second. I really wish I could buy your music (especially Arboreal, but at least 3 or 4 more albums) on vinyl. You blend the most beautiful and interesting sounds together so perfectly. Can't wait to hear what you come out with next.
holy shit that nightsky is nice
The curse of the Infinite jets demo.....hahaha
I wish I could have a membership to his studio I would so love a tour.
Love the add placement 😂😂
hell yea of the audio version of hardware stuff =)
5:44 Lol perfect album cover right there
What's up Benn, love your content ❤
Thanks for the video. I loved the reverb sound coming from the Strymon Nightsky. I wonder if there is a similar pedal that is less expensive.
man i love cosmos sooooooo mucH!!!!
