    The trap worked! I caught the lawn-destroyin' squirrel last evening around dusk. Also, I found that this trap is REALLY easy to use. One thing to look for: when the squirrel is trapped, it will grunt, snarl and move incessantly. As soon as I covered the cage with a dark blanket, the animal shut up immediately.

    I've used a strong elastic band put on the wide part of the trip plate and slid peanuts under the elastic... no soft bate mess. Good video

    Thanks! Another squirrel appeared today. I put out the trap and I am going to check it in a few minutes. In the newspaper today is an article about a 7 year old girl who got bubonic plague from handling a dead squirrel while camping in Colorado. She wrapped the squirrel in her sweater then later wore the sweater around her neck and fleas bit her.
    I never touched the squirrels or mice I catch.

    My local DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) have these types of traps and will loan them to county residents. They are EXCELLENT for catching and relocating possums that are destroying your home/property.

      It worked for me. Then one day a weasel showed up and never saw anymore squirrels. Just the scent of the weasel in the tunnels is enough to scare away any squirrels.

    They make a raccoon size Zeus & Phoebe fit into. I trained them how to avoid being caught in one. I have a video on Zeus & Phoebe's channel showing her avoiding the trip mechanism to eat tuna then backing out of the trap. The video is titled, "Phoebe uses Ninja Cat skills to evade capture"
    You can even do a Google search and it will come up.

    Good short review of cage trap. Everyone talks about how great HAVAHART traps are. I don't care for them. You really don't need two doors. If a big fox squirrel gets motivated, he can tip a trap over from inside. The HAVAHART doors just come open. Spring loaded doors won't. I use whole walnuts for squirrels. Peanut butter attracts little birds who trip the pan. I don't want to stress songbirds. Walnuts can't be pulled through cage wire. I have to deal with squirrels myself. Small town won't take them.

    • @MeNotBrainWashed
      @MeNotBrainWashed  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting. The HAR traps cost more in my area and are not as good as this model. I've only caught a mated pair of quail in this trap, otherwise all small mammals. I've had to anchor the trap down because of tripping and stealing of the bait. I use two large plant stakes that are thick and four feet in length. However, I have not seen any squirrels since a weasel come through the backyard last winter. I see squirrels in the neighborhood, but as long as the holes smell of weasel, they won't come around.

      Most of what you said is correct but the Havahart # 1083 "easy set" trap only has 1 door and I stopped catching small birds once I began using the 1083. This saved me a lot of time because having the trap closed for an hour with a small bird in it, is an hour I wont catch any squirrels. I use my old squirrel traps to place mouse traps inside them at night.

  • @ccdogpark
    @ccdogpark 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice job with your video but The Havahart model 1083 "easy set" trap is a much better squirrel trap. It is easier to set and it is shorter so you need a much smaller fish tank to dunk the squirrel in. I have never heard of people trapping squirrels and then calling the city to take them away. How long does it take for them to return your trap ? Homeowners take care of the grey squirrels themselves where I live.
    The Havahart # 1083 is not being stocked at any of the Lowes or Home Depots near me for some crazy reason, so you probably have to order them online. It should cost approx $35 plus shipping. #
    I configure my # 1083 squirrel traps every morning for their intended purpose but squirrels are not active at night so I use these traps for mice at night. I put the plastic mouse traps inside the 1083 at night. The reason I use the TomCats inside the squirrel trap is to protect other wildlife like birds from setting them off in the early AM before I wake up. Outside mice traps could also hurt other wildlife or dogs etc. #
    I set my plastic saw-tooth Tomcat mouse traps traps outdoors because if you have mice inside, that probably means you have 10 times as many outside. I found this out by accident recently when I was leaving my squirrel traps out overnight and noticed the bait was gone in the morning. Squirrels and birds are not active at night and I realized it had to be mice taking the bait. The trick to baiting traps is to spread the peanut butter in a thin layer across the entire platform. Don't just put a glob of peanut butter in the center. Don't let it get old. If it is laying around for more than a week it loses the odor and you should replace it with fresh PB. I like to put 2 traps inside of a Havahart model # 1083 squirrel trap at night. Mice are not very active (outside) during the day. Leaving outside traps set during daylight is a waste of time. Leaving squirrel traps set at night is also a waste of time #
    I place 2 plastic mousetraps inside each squirrel trap and some nights I catch a mouse inside each trap even though they are in very close proximity to each other. I have caught 24 mice the first month I began doing this. I had no idea there were so many mice in our suburban neighborhood !! I thought that only catching an occasional mouse inside the garage meant we were free of mice. The relatively new Havahart # 1083 "easy set" trap is the best squirrel trap by a wide margin. I only use my other older traps to catch mice now. # #
    I hope this advice helps someone.

    Let me know.
    I have cleared out all of the squirrels from my yard and for a while they were being replaced by squirrels from other yards. I have actually seen squirrels running into my backyard from down the street. The last squirrel I saw was a huge grey/albino granddad squirrel. I set out the trap and haven't seen him since. I guess he found a better yard to live-in.

    I still want to hear what the city does with the squirrels you turn in and how long they keep your trap ??
    I forgot to tell you that I also have attached an "L" shaped piece of sheet metal across the top of the back 1/3 of the trap and all the way
    down the back.
    I do this for 2 reasons. It protects the bait from being ruined in the rain and it also prevents animals from reaching in the back of the trap
    and stealing the peanut butter from behind. I drill holes in the sheet metal and use plastic electrical ties to secure the sheet metal to the cage.
    The problem with making the peanut butter so easy for squirrels to access where I live would be that sparrows and 3 other species of small birds
    also eat peanut butter and you would have to be constantly watching the trap to make sure the peanut was not eaten while you were distracted.
    Birds do not set off the two model 1083 traps I have, so they could easily take the bait and leave me with an unbaited trap.
    My solution took me a couple of years to think of but I cut a small piece of wood approx 3/4" thick 1.5" wide and 7" long. I then placed 4 equidistant
    screws through the 3/4" thick wood. I then cut off 4 small plastic soda bottles at the neck and attached the plastic bottle caps via the screws.
    So I ended up with 4 pieces of plastic each protruding approx 1 1/4" from the wood. I then fill the 4 bottle caps (and the neck of the bottle) with peanut butter. Then I take the 7" block of wood with the bottle caps attached and wedge it into the back of the trap so that it is facing the back of the cage
    (which is covered by the strip of sheet metal I mentioned earlier) and thus birds can't easily get to the peanut butter because they aren't strong enough to "unwedge" the piece of wood. But squirrels can still smell and see the peanut butter and they will still enter the trap to try and access it. I also throw a few shelled peanuts in the back of the trap for them to see.
    The Havahart # 1083 is only 17.5 " long and 7" wide and a friend gave me a fish tank 20" x 9", which allows me to use as little water as possible
    while disposing of squirrels but that also prevents me from using my older 2-door trap which is much longer. I like to keep the water clean so
    it doesn't smell too bad.
    I never waste a squirrel carcass. I consistently take them to the exact same spot in a nearby wooded area so that scavengers will find them and have something to eat. You only have to do this a few times before the scavengers begin searching the same area on a regular basis.
    Feel free to use any of these ideas if you find them useful.
    .

      I no longer live in that city, but they kill the squirrels and other pests immediately with potassium chloride drops.
      At my current house, there are no squirrels or other pests. I have cameras and only see neighborhood dogs, cats and birds (hawks, doves and sparrows). I no longer use my traps which are in the shed if ever needed again.

    • @ccdogpark
      @ccdogpark 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok Thanks for responding. I figured they were probably killing them but I suspect they are probably just trashing the carcass and that would annoy me. It seems better to just dispose of them myself in the woods to provide food for hawks or foxes or whatever species are eating them, especially in the winter. I like to think I am having some small effect on biodiversity in this manner, since squirrels are wayyyy too abundant and other wildlife species are in such great decline. Don't feel like you need to respond to this.
      Bu remember, if the neighborhood cats a re spending an inordinate amount of time in your yard, you probably have some mice around.
      Good Luck

      @@ccdogpark Oh, I do have mice in my chicken coop. I have a camera in it and I see the mice all the time. I have setup traps that don't use poison and caught a lot of mice. I have put chunks of Irish Spring soap in the corners where the mice enter the coop, which works for a limited time. The neighbor cat is cool and doesn't bother the hens. He hangs out in the coop all the time waiting to catch mice.

    beautiful green lawn. I have spent a lot of time getting this grass green and healthy. This damn squirrel has already dug 12 holes in the grass. But tonight and tomorrow

    squirrels are disgusting. I have gotten rid of a bunch of them. They can devour tomatoes for sure. If food is scarce for them they will eat baby birds and small animals. There is a video on youtube of a squirrel eating a small bird. Cats are worse. They get the same treatment.

    It’s a waste of time to catch and release them. Drop the cage in a tub of water. It’s a pest, not a cute little critter.

    Sorry...this is not a good trap. Don't tell me that this trap is simple to trip...my bait was stolen three times.

      BenJune09 It happened to me too. I solved the problem by anchoring the trap to the ground and putting the trigger on the very edge of the metal bar. But some animals are just very smart and know how to steal food without getting caught. I have a video of my cat, Phoebe, stealing tuna without tripping the trap. The first time she tripped it and got trapped inside. A few months later, I let her try again and on video she sniffed the plate then carefully stepped over it to eat the tuna then backed out without tripping anything. See it here: th-cam.com/video/K6wd7bbTtzY/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks for the update...actually, I invested in the smaller trap (one size down), and the trigger is best for what you described. Thanks again for the comment!

      +BenJune09 Crows are smart and cautious. They will steal bait from the rear of the trap with their long beaks and never enter the trap at all.

      Ah...that's a real possibility. Thank you!

      +Anton Bouchette The trap is long enough that they birds have to enter to reach the food. And the opening between the wire is too small for their beaks.
