They can revive Mitsubishi as a marquee to compete against Mazda, refresh the Honda Ridgeline and keep Nissan as a budget brand and get rid of all the Jatco CVTs for starters and put base Honda transmissions and engines in those vehicles.
Id say part of the reason why this merger is happening as it is is because Japan wants to keep Nissan Japanese. When they are merged Nissan could use Hondas presence in Europe to regain market share and I think they could really achieve something there since the german automakers are struggling and barely have any decent cheap cars anymore at all. So if Nissan and Honda can come up with a few euro-specific models that are under 30k€ MSRP they can really gain market share back.
They merge because most likely the Japanese gov don't want to have foreign company to own Nissan, so they asked Honda for help. There is no reason to have Honda to buy Nissan at the first place (Honda basically have everything beside body-on-frame platform). I would say the merge won't change things for what already have, they probably will just work together to develop new EVs and software, just like Toyota and Subaru (Yes, Toyota technically own Subaru).
Yeah Honda also has been showing a downward trend on its reliability recently. Their latest version of L series with its direct injection, the cvt with a very weak belt. Idk why they want to fix something that is not broken and made it worse even. The earlier version of the L series in late 00s are super reliable, mated with a 5AT (god bless 2008 economic crisis made honda stopped using cvt for a few years) is also just as good. Never had a single issue in the 15 years (and counting) of owning it
Now we can have BCE (Big Civic Energy) with Nissan CVT 🤗... jk I hope they replace all Nissan transmissions with Honda ones AND maybe possibly bring back something evo related or possibly even S chassis related??? Although there is absolutely no way that's going to happen unfortunately cause Honda would never allow another company to make a cool car like that, that would outsell what they currently make
