Our latest camper van journey takes us to Ypres. We first wake up at a fantastic Aire provided by local authorities and move first to the Hooge Crater Museum where we discover some interesting facts around the evolution of the first real warfare and use of gas masks. Historic Ypres provided a fascinating walking tour but the temperature was high and we just needed to flop in the campervan for the day. The last post ceremony was emotional in the evening and one not to be missed before we found a night parkup that played with our paranoia

The Last Post is so haunting. It never fails to move me.
Yes an emotional day starting at the cemetery which was super quiet ….
Difficult not to get emotional watching this, it really makes you think. Thanks, Em 💜
It was an emotional day that started in the museum and cemetery for us which was so quiet and thought provoking
Thanks for watching
Thank you, that was a very moving episode. Take care Gill
Glad you enjoyed it - very emotional day starting at the cemetery for us
Thank you for sharing a video with so much history attached, all very moving and feel many politicians should remember all the mistakes made at that time..and try to not repeat them... Keep safe...
First as ever thank you for taking time to watch - it’s really important future generations understand the history as it’s not that long ago and I can only echo your sentiments
Somehow managed to bypass this episode so pleased to have discovered it. Very moving walk at the graves and the Menin gate ceremony was very thought provoking.
Glad you enjoyed it - it was an emotional day from the point we walked around the cemetery
Thanks for watching and commenting
Very moving ceremony. The history was very well done. My grandfather fought in both world wars, seems unbelievable. Thank you.🚐🌼🥞😀
Yes it was an emotional day for us at the cemetery in the morning and then this last thing at night - it needs to be remembered by all future generations
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts
Ypres was fascinating. Very poignant. Must have been incredible to see the Last Post Ceremony.
Emotional day starting at the cemetery for sure - we found the place very mining - thanks for watching and commenting
Hi. In answer to your request, yes, we do enjoy your vlogs and please keep making them. That was a moving but enjoyable episode, thank you.
Thanks really appreciate that comment and you watching - have a good weekend
We go quite often with our motorcycle club, The Meldrews, the last time in September 2023. A very moving ceremony.
That must be a fun drive there - very emotional day starting at the cemetery that really got to me …. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing your travels. What you showed of the museum and cemetery really highlighted the futility of war. We must go to Ypres one day. The Last Post ceremony was very moving. Looking forward to see where you go next 🙂
Thanks guys - an emotional day at the cemetery to start then the ceremony - certainly makes you think
Interesting museum. It was closed when Karl went. The English called Ypres Wipers. Such a shame about the scaffolding, it was there when Karl went too and it was also rammed! What a beautiful place though, the buildings looked so pretty. There's something so haunting about The Last Post. I always find these places and scenes so moving. Such a loss of life. I wish I'd known my Grandad who was lucky enough to survive WW1. But then he may not have wanted to talk about it anyway, and who could have blamed him.
Thanks - we found it very poignant and having gone to the museum and the cemetery it certainly made us think. The reality it wasn’t that long ago in history with just a couple of generations back
Thanks
i think many of the people who came back didnt want to talk ,i knew little of my grandad on my dads side but after doing research when i reached my fifties i found out my grandfather was in the engineers and was responsible for digging tunnels under the enemy lines ,i never knew much about him other than remember him being a quite unassuming man who worked on the docks in london it seems after the war he walked from london to wales to become a miner but after doing this for a while he decided the memories of a life underground were too much and he walked back to london where he then went onto working on the docks
@grahamunderwood9353 what a fascinating Personsl history and it seems to affect people in many ways and talking in detail was obviously painful for many. I think it’s so important for future generations not to lose connections to these places
Thanks for sharing your memories
That was a very moving ceremony guys, glad you captured and shared that.
Thanks for watching hope your having a great time
Thanks for watching hope your having a great time
Very very good video. Thanks for posting. Extremely interesting content.
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed
😢 impossible not to be moved by the last post under any circumstances but that was special. I wish more people would take the time to research and appreciate the profound horror of war. Too many people taking the hard won peace for granted IMHO. Thanks for sharing and take care x
Thanks for watching and couldn’t agree more - it’s vital generations know these stories and try to see the reality of what occurred in ww1 & 2 - I fear it all gets lost in video games etc
Love your vlogs, very informative, also have their funny moments, keep up the good work.
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching and above all commenting
I must say it was a very moving watch tonight. It's amazing to think that ceremony takes place every day.
On a lighter note, I must say it looks like you have really caught the sun, Jane.
👍🐸
Yep we couldn’t believe a city has managed through many world events to carry on with the ceremony …. It was a warm few days so catching the sun in the van was easy lol 😂
It was certainly 🥵🥵! Jane
@getawaygeese I'm off to Poland again at the end of April, this area would make a very good last night stop off on the way home 👍🐸
Nice
Very moving!
Scaffolding! Arrggghhh! It's everywhere! Has to be done though!
Hope the plant stayed alive!!😂
Thanks for sharing!
Ju
😁
I’ll have you know that’s very historic scaffolding and photogenic 😂 the plant is at home and living
Thanks for watching
Many Thanks, very informative and interesting video
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you for watching
A very moving ceremony. I can understand how difficult it is to have self control when faced with those wonderful patisseries everywhere.
Thanks for watching - yes it was very poignant… as for the pastries there is no control lol
I sing with Rock Choir , and we were lucky enough to be offered the chance to sing at the Last Post Ceremony in December 2019. It was such an honour and as you said so emotionally charged that singing wasn’t easy! I would recommend returning once the renovations to the Menin Gate are complete, it’s quite something to see thousands upon thousands of names listed inside.
Wow what an experience for you and we would certainly go back again to see it after the work is done
Thank you for sharing your memory
Just outside.the Menin.Gate there is a very big museum called Flanders Fields and it covers three floors of a building, I spent three hours inside it looking at all the exhibits and I could have stayed there for three hours more only the other half was outside waiting and she has no interest in history and she was not a happy camper. I loved the Menon Gate ceremony, Love your videos
Wasn’t aware of that museum so one for next time - I am not a great artefact museum person I prefer the more creative story telling type but Jane is like you and wants to read every card
Thanks for sharing and watching
Whilst wishing respect the essence of this post - ‘ooooooo 9 o’clock’ 😂😂😂😂😂. I hear ya!
I know I don’t what’s happened to us as 9 o’clock is the new 2am - thanks for watching as we try to create videos that deliver interest on many levels
Thanks for that, many folk will appreciate the reminding in these times, of the politicians past mistakes and how they are repeating it.
Yes it’s not that far away with a couple of generations and so important we don’t forget
Thank you for watching and above all commenting
Great video really enjoyed, but too many cakes for me 🎉😂😂 well done good luck 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢
For you ! You want to be in our shoes lol we had to start reducing as that was a bad day lol
Thanks for watching
What I found really interesting was the contrast in your relaxed unplanned attitude to travelling, compared to your carefully mapped out itinerary for the Ireland trip. Are you just more relaxed about where you end up, through experience travelling in the van?
Hi there - yes we have made a massive step in being more confident and relaxed - The first Ireland trip started us planning less and have carried that forward in France and also our second trip to the north of Ireland where we are now
This is just about me losing habits if a lifetime at work in project management and letting life take over
Thanks for watching
Great vlog again guys and I saw Ruth Aisling do a similar vlog recently, fascinating place.
Thanks for watching hopefully we did the place justice
@@getawaygeese you did that, looking forward to the nxt 👍
A bit of family history for you. Keith's grandad was I Ypres in the 1st World War. He was in a gas attack and it affected him badly. These days they would call it PTSD. He was a very nervous man for the rest of his life.
9.00pm for bed. We can beat you. Quite often we were in bed and nodding off by 8.30pm. We are all getting old. I'm 60 next week and that can't be right!!!!!
Wow like we said not long ago so very much personal connected history and gas being used for the first time - the cemetery was quite emotional to be honest there
I know 19:35 on Ireland in bed lol 😂
Thanks for watching
Great 👍
Thank you for watching
Thank you for watching
Hi Guys! Thank you for the history lessons about WW1, such a horrific time in history. Enjoyed seeing the beautiful scenery in that area. Jane you such a lovely, commentary style…were you ever a BBC presenter?!😄
Hi there. So important we don't forget isn't it. Hard to believe it saw such devastation when you look at it today. Thank you for the compliment - hopefully I keep improving 😊 Jane
Very nice video guys 🤩very poignant 😔
Thank you 😀it was an emotional day from when we went to the cemetery
Enough of the old, Jane. But yeah, I’m hearing you about not being used to late nights. You really do sound knackered. 😂
We wouldnt survive some of our past nights out these days Vicki. We'd be in AnE !! 😂
Have you watched the film, 'War Horse'? Oh my.... 😢
Yes we have seen that - very emotional all around - thanks for watching
Ive been lucky enough to see the play twice as well - cried through most of it 🥹. Powerful stuff isnt it -
Jane
@getawaygeese absolutely. We were lucky enough to get a backstage tour when it was at the National. They let you get inside one of the horse puppets. Nx
Wow that's amazing!! Lucky you - a fantastic memory 😊
Was it a mistake you spoke over the last post or just didn't care.
Thank you for your comment and apologies if we caused offence - we spoke slot about that when we produced as we weren’t sure if we should or not and didn’t do so at the start you will see and was trying to share the emotion and importance of the event
we didn’t record the whole ceremony and we were in silence obviously when we were there throughout
we do care a lot which is why we travelled so far to attend and also visit a lot of other sites if you have watched the series
So I apologise if offence has been taken on this occasion as this was not the intent so I guess a mistake
