Sweet, Skynyrd used these amps for a while. I tried with my old Marshall’s and Fender amps to pull out some Skynyrd sounds and notta, didn’t get them, I had a 65 for a while so I pulled it out of the woodwork and bingo, Skynyrd tone all the way, not to mention some good old rock tones.
Beautiful man. I owned a Peavey Deuce twice and both times felt it was a great amp. It sounded different but good. I loved the reverb sound and the distorted sound.
Well s*** man what else can you say about that but hey you nailed it sounded awesome man I am fixing to pick one of these amps up here in a couple of days and can't wait to bring it home.
Enough said. 0 thumbs down. Im excited im getting my deuce amp today in perfect shape just serviced for $200. What a deal. Ive always loved the classic tube tone. I always thought to reach that i had to brake my wallet and buy a Marshall. After plenty of research i feel like ive found what i was looking for. 2x12 plenty of headroom, tubes, durable made in the usa and all the watts i need. Try getting a Marshall that fits all that for $200. Still love Marshall. But this will be just fine!
Thank you very much :) Yes I have been very impressed since I've started using it. I acquired a road case for it and I feel like it would prob now survive a nuclear blast. These things are built like tanks. Just like any amp, it requires some time to get familiar with, but overall it does jazz to blues to southern rock relatively easy.
@@markpennington5763 this was an external Tascam mic plugged into the bottom of my iPhone sitting on an ottoman. No syncing or processing, just one recording.
so im getting one soon and im gonna be playing a lot of skynyrd tunes and i was wondering what your settings are on the amp so i can get them same tones
Usually have the mids and treble around 3 o’clockish, the bass around 8 or 9 o’clock, pre gain up around 2-3 o’clock. Roll the volume back on the guitar for rhythm and clean. It depends a lot on the speakers in the amp, but that’s a decent place to start with these amps. Best to use your ears. 👍
Swamp music, double trouble, I aint the one, Workin for MCA, Not sure on the next one, Gimme 3, Sweet Home, what's your name, Yea that is the sound. I learned my chops on that shit, Peavey Mace was the 70's amp. They still use peavey stuff and other stuff but that peavey stuff they have been using for some time is modded a little.
I just ordered one online comes with foot switch and cover got it for $299.00 and just got the new Epiphone Firebird. I'm driving semi OTR but I should be home when it comes in. Can't wait sooo excited. What settings are you using I'm a huge Skynard fan. I've never played a Duce but aways loved Peavey amps. Anyone have any tips on getting the Skynard sound or any other tips about the amp?
Use the Pre Gain as your drive, up around 2-3 o clock. These usually have a lot of Bass, so I usually keep it low around 9 o clock. (Maybe a bit more if you have a Firebird) Depending on what speakers you have, I keep the mids and highs up a good ways. You may need to pull them back a bit if you have Black Widow speakers. The main thing is to tinker with it a while and don’t be afraid of extreme settings. The Post Gain knob will be your overall volume. Good luck!
@@Vaughn6886 Thanks for the tips! I can't wait to try them out. Not sure what speakers it has they said they were original speakers. I didn't get a picture of the back when I bought it online. It doesn't have the black widow symbol thing on the front though, so maybe it has different speakers.
James Krys correct! From what I can tell, aside from the power section and the extra watts, the circuits from the mace VT and Deuce VT are the same. LS actually used the previous Mace version that wasn’t the “VT” model. But for my needs the VT circuits are close enough to what I need, and since our PA’s have evolved since the 1970’s, I don’t need the full 160 watt. (Or really the 120 watt for that matter, I just wanted the circuit that would get me close to the sound) :)
They very well could have! I know that Peavey didn't make the Deuce VT until 1978 which was obviously after the "original" Skynyrd, so they def could have used them in later versions. If you look on scribd (www.scribd.com/doc/23991124/Lynyrd-Skynyrd-Allen-Collins-Equipment-History) (www.scribd.com/doc/23991126/Lynyrd-Skynyrd-Gary-Rossington-Equipment-History) you can find a list of all the gear that all the members of Skynyrd ever used in their career with Skynyrd and after. (They got the info for the book from Ed King and their guitar tech) I don't see a mention of a Peavey Deuce in there, it appears they relied heavily on the Mace 320t.
I had the gain turned up pretty high here, I think these amps really shine with their spanky clean sounds. Most country guys in the 80s were using Peavey’s. (Some steel players still are) Some say they are Twin killers. Big clean sounds to be had with the gain backed off a bit.
@@Vaughn6886 hey thanks! I have a chance to pick up one of these up it’s the peavey Duce II 212 the guy switched out speakers with some hemp ones he said so.. i don’t abt those lol Oh! And have the chance to get the BOSS NEXTONE STAGE SERIES but I’m torn what to get the peavey or the nextone 🤔
@@tommypricemusic ah gotcha, well keep in mind there were some circuit changes from the Deuce to Deuce II to Deuce VT. I’m not as familiar with the Deuce II (it was before the VT I think) but most all Peavey amps from the same eras have the same circuitry. (VTs will have similar gain strictures, early T series will all have the same gain structure, etc) Most all use 6l6 tubes and will have solid clean tones. You will have fight with it a bit to find the tones, but they are there. I’d say play it and see if it speaks to you, otherwise it’s always hard to judge how much work a used amp will need.
Also, idk much about the new Boss’s. I played with a guy that used the Katana for a bit, 50 watt then 100 watt. Being solid state, neither of them kept up. I think he dumped them. The Peavey will def be louder. Idk if volume is a concern for your situation
On both channels I had the bass turned pretty low, between 0-2. Treble was high, around 7-8 (2:30-3 o clock). Mids on second channel are just past noon. Gain on both channels was around 2:30-3 o clock. Volumes were between 2- 4 on the dial (8:00- 10 o clock) One of the channels has a bit more bass and less volume (If i remember correctly it is the effects channel) so I had the bass all the way off and the volume up a bit more. Get the clean, rhythm, and lead tones by adjust the volume knobs on the guitar. Hope that helps!
Joe S in this clip I was plugged into the automix channel and you can see me switching between the Normal and Effects channel. I prefer the effects channel and will play through it if I don’t want to use the footswitch. (This Deuce is the VT series, not the earlier 240t, so it doesn’t have series and parallel inputs) When I hit the combine button on the footswitch, the VT runs both channels in parallel. (The VT doesn’t have the series capability as he 240t does) (parallel is like running a patch cable with two channels at once, series runs the channels into each other like two pedals). The back of the amp will have outputs for external speakers. Make sure your ohms match up for total load and you can plug a cabinet into those.
@@Vaughn6886 thank you I just ordered one yesterday, and am looking forward to plugging my gibson explorer into it. I'm trying to go for that iconic punchy skynyrd sound. Thanks
The volume in the room wasn't loud enough to be played in a band setting. (could talk over it in a raised voice) In a band setting, the volume is usually at 3 (10:00) or above whereas this video and bedroom prac is usually around 2 (9:00). I would highly recommend getting a small fan and have it blowing on the tubes no matter what volume. It gets very hot back there otherwise.
Sounds killer. Could have bought a 4-10 version in the early 80's but too rough to tote around, plus is didn't sound like this. Heck, neither did the Mace i wound up buying.
Thank you! They definitely take a bit of fighting with to find their sweet spot and it changes drastically from room to room, but I enjoy trying to get decent tones out of amps that may have been deemed to have "lesser sound quality."
How are you getting the amp to sound dirty ? I cant get mine to do this, it would need to be cranked to window breaking levels to get any kind of breakup.
On either channel, I'm turning the Pre knob up relatively high (2 o'clock or higher). That will set the desired amount of breakup you want, then use the Post knob to adjust the volume higher or lower.
Thankyou, I will give that a try. I take it you keep the bass low and treble high? Im using a Tele so Ill have to play around with it a bit. Thats a really decent Skynyrd tone you are getting, what guitar do you use?
Yes, for me the bass is lower than the treble. They fluctuate a bit based on the room, but the bass has always been lower. Currently I've been playing a Gibson Explorer and a Les Paul, both with alnico ii magnets, looking into getting a Firebird though. With a Tele, you'll likely be turning the bass up and the treble down a bit. Thank you, it's not an exact Skynyrd tone match but it's close enough for me for the time being. Their live tone and album tone was quite a bit different. Biggest thing that I learned trying to imitate it was turning the gain down. Best of luck!
Richard Gregory I’m actually looking for one of those Marshall 2061x heads for that reason. A full 50 watt or 100 watt would be too loud for what I need.
That deuce is what 120 watts also you could get a marshall or any 4x12 or 410 a power amp and you can get a amp simulator a pod XT live it has stuff like the marshall super lead 100 simulator really good stuff look up tom saguto on you tube
Oh yea I subscribe to Tom's page, he has some good stuff on there. I considered going the XT live route after seeing his videos, which I may end up doing, but I like the feel and sound of traditional amps vs Tom's setup. The deuce is 120 watts but it also has a master volume. A traditional plexi will not have a master volume, which is why I think the 20 watt 2061 would be what I need since I'll have to crank the volume pretty high. Another thing to consider is that I've been running the deuce in stereo with various other amps to create an overdubbed effect when we play live. (Since I'm setting up two amps I'd prefer they be small, instead of a 4x12. I'm looking to pair the 2061 with a 1x12 cab) I have a TC mimiq pedal that creates that effect so it fattens up the sound and creates the overdubbed sound that is closer to the album.
The ugliest amp and logo on earth. The sound is a bit trebly. It don' t sing. Ok it' s my personal opinion. Skynyard had great vintage guitars that deserved a better sound.
Yes! That is the sound. Well done!
Sounds great! Like an isolated track almost 🎸

Good and accurate demo of the capabilities of this amp!

It does sound pretty close to the studio mixed & processed tone! 👌🏻✌🏻🎶

Now that's vintage like the Mace n classic any of the old tube drive Peavy amps are wicked awesome
I’ve had both. The Deuce was good in that you could play it in most clubs. The Mace was more for outdoor venues. At least that was what I experienced.

AWESOME!!!!!!!
Still have mine! It's a great amp. Don't bump it with it cranked up and the reverb on! Add a little compression it sounds great.
I'd hit mine with my pick hand before playing Judas Priest Metal Gods.
