Brilliant. I so miss people like this over here. We barely have anyone doing this kind of work on amps over here. I had this one guy, but he moved and now I gotta drive like 250 km to his place. I miss the time where I would just pack my amps in my car and be at his place in 30 min. He's literally the one guy over here that I trust with my amps. Was really fun to watch this video.
You clearly had a lot of fun at playing at the end, which is great. It's always important to test an amp thoroughly after servicing, isn't it? Thanks for posting! 😊
Great video. I've had my 5150 II for going on two decades now and all it's ever needed is power tubes. Would love to see more high gain amps in the shop, although I know that's not normally your wheel house.
@@quantumbuddhist I mean that would be cool. I’ve grown to enjoy a strong clean tone as a base and stage gain through pedals. I’m also terrible though because I’ve gone to the dark side and begun using digital as my many rig. 😬
Great job in presenting your Colleen-Made socket tightening tool the way you did again so those new to your channel who might not be familiar with it and how you created it now have the benefit of you knowledge. Way to go Colleen...Looking forward to your next video!
Thank you so much for posting this! I just got a used 6505+ yesterday, and I cleaned it up last night, and couldn't find any videos showing the preamp section. I wake up today and here is your vid!! It's crazy the order of the preamp tubes: V6, V1, V2, V5, V3, V4, right? Loved watching you take that section out of the amp and service it. Hope you beat the heat. We're roasting down her in LA too!
Oh Golly. The 5150. Awesome. Most common reason my Peaveys had issues was bad soldering on the PCB. Hit everything again and possibly add solder in some cases and your amp will last a long time. I have a ValveKing mod video if you're interested in Peaveys.
The wild green parrots originally came from a bird enthusiast in Ocean Beach, CA (San Diego county). He let them loose for some reason, I never asked why, but they were soon reproducing like crazy and hanging out on the power lines. This was in the late 1990s. At this point they've moved north all the way to parts of Ventura and Santa Barbara.
Great video! Really nice to see the inside of the amp. Very useful for people who might want to buy one used, to see the issues that might arise if they need work done and to see the build workmanship. About the parrots, we also have flocks of wild green parrots in Lisbon, Portugal LOL they're cute though
Ive teched since 1991, ive seen more probls w/later versions than older cept for one power tube board replace on a Block Letter. Electrovoice used to have a plant near me in Buchanan, Michigan. i know someone who does exploring of abandoned places, and he said the building still has file cabinets and drafting drawers full of paperwork and blueprints. From what I've read, the property is contaminated, and the toxic cleanup is very expensive.
I’ve been there when it was operating. The contamination is because they used to just dump the chemicals that they used to chrome plate the microphones out the back of the building. They really didn’t know better in those days.
@@voodoochild1954 Besides plating, chemicals from the foundry and painting also added to the mess. Between EV and Clark Equipment, they both did their share of dumping bad things.
Really enjoyed this video and what a great talent!! You must have the patience of Job to work on these! I love your guitar 🎸 playing to dear! Dean here!!
Good call; I'd rather move my halfstack around than my 5150 combo to be honest. Can't bring myself to chop but have definitely considered getting a separate headshell made for it
Excellent job! I owned two original heads for about a decade. Absolutely amazing amps! Still have my Peavey 5150 combo! 30+ years old, all beat up, but it still really sounds great!
Love your videos! Steve Morse used these heads when he joined Deep Purple in mid 90s. I guess his Jubillees were to mid heavy and didn't blend well with Jon Lords hammond.
Same here. 1996. Still has the same tubes it rolled off the assembly line with except for one preamp tube I had to swap. But I kept the tube. It's a fire-breathing monster! Eddie used to START with the volume around 6-7. I've never turned the amp up past 7. It was just too f&$kin loud! Ha! And I love playing super loud. But that's just a whole 'nother level of crazy at that volume! I'll never sell the amp. I'm it's second owner . I've wanted one since I was a kid when they came out but couldn't afford it back in the day. I now have the 5150, the LBX. 1 head, I'm looking at the EL84 Iconic head, a smattering of Marshal's, Peavey's, Fender's, a bunch of the little modeling practice amps, and a bunch of different cabs. Mostly 4x12 's and 2x12's. My unicorn Oversized Mesa Boogie 4x12 is the most versatile, borderline perfect cab I've ever used next to my '85 Carvin 2x12. I've also been on a rack gear kick again. Buying up that shit for no reason! Haha! And I should have NEVER dipped my toes into the computer modeling world. Now I'm hooked! I run a line out of my interface into a 400 watt Ashley power amp with the rack stuff side-chained and into a DIME 4x12. Sound so huge!!
Nice! How do you decide if it's a good time to replace the filter caps? I'd be tempted to just swap them if I were going through the trouble of taking the board out, but I also hate wasting good parts. Thanks for sharing!
So that's the entire preamp on that board? Pretty cool. I had no idea they were so modular. I wonder if the combo amp is like that? I had built a preamp to try to get the sound of the rhythm channel with the crunch and bright switch engaged all the time. It sounded ok, but it seemed like it was a but muddy to my ears I only built it up to the cathode follower.
Hey, I think I know the story behind the parrots. In 2018 I was living in Van Nuys with the parrots and my neighbor who had lived there for decades said there was an old Anheuser Busch factory that had a bunch of parrots. You could take a tour of the factor and see the parrots, I guess? Anyway, eventually the factory closed down and instead of re-locating the birds they just let them out. The amp sounds great too, rock on!
At first I thought it was a hybrid amp like the Deuce or Mace, but was nicely surprised when it turned out totally tubular. Putting all the preamp tubes inside was not that great given they give off lots of heat and the area around them, or under the chassis in general, is not ventilated. It'd be way better if the cover was perforated. I like the removable PCB though. Quite serviceable - contrary to e.g. Valve King 212 I remember that was a nightmare to work on.
I totally agree regarding the preamp tubes! There are a few small design issues but overall a great amp. The output tube sockets are riveted in, so in order to remove the output tube board you do have to drill out the rivets 💔
Are cold solder joints usually a problem with this amp, and are you adding solder to the existing joints just to provide a larger surface area to the pins, instead of just reflowing the existing solders?
The one thing that these amps need done is a hardwiring of the heater wire connections of that ribbon cable to the output tube board (visible in your vid at 10:23), as the flimsy ribbgon connectors can't handle the amps for the heaters. The newer versions have much heftier connectors and wires. Love this amp, and please don't cut parts of the service. I would have enjoyed looking at the dark side of the main board!
He said he would use the Variac to lower the voltage to 88 volts. He figured that his Plexi was only putting out around 30 watts......but that was the exact tone he was looking for. This info all came from Mike Soldano who Eddie liked, and thought was the best boutique amp builder around. I'm stealing "Wild Green Parrots" as the name of my next project.
Thanks so much for showing this, very rare to find video like this, um ya i always wondered why my board always flexed quite a bit when installing pre amp tubes, i mean it bends and i thought should it do this ? well i saw the rubber stopper behind it Ive never seen before i imagine my has turned on me dam i was always why it would bend thank you !
The parrots are from Pasadena just like Van Halen! There was a fire at a pet store so they just released all the animals and the parrots propagated from there.
There was an electrolytic cap on the pre-amp board that looked like it had a bulging top, was it bulging or was it just lighting giving that effect? It does look like its had some exposure to heat being right next to a tube as you can see the covering has shrunken back. Its usually a good idea to replace electrolytic caps that have been right next to a heat source, those tend to go bad first (electrolyte drying out, high ESR)
I wish you were in my area for some reason there seems to be 0 amp techs in Sacramento witch is strange considering the amount of working musicians we have in this city, not to mention the ones who still use actual tube amplifiers. I noticed that you used one tube after spraying DeOxit into the tube sockets, to effect the clean. Isn't the possibility of oxidation on the leads for the other tubes also a concern?
Any chance you can link your soldering iron? I've outgrown the cheap ones, and if I'm going to spend money on something better, I want to get something that will meet my needs. I do mostly guitar wiring, but am also looking to get in to amps

Hi, have you ever had a solder joint flow into a nearby solder point and make a short between them? What do you do when that happens? Here's an idea, a video on fixing your boo-boo's . Not that that ever happens to you, of course.
Yeah when I lived in Santa Ana CA we had flocks of green and orange Conyer parriots, they get loose as pets and form flocks, not sure if they have learned to migrate,in the wild now ,or if they just call orange county home, since their way to the US from South America was by land,at the hands of pirates who smuggle bird's for a living.
When they first came out, I was surprised that the 5150 amps were mostly used by metal players. To my ears a cranked Plexi was more closer to Ed’s sound.
