    Virtual Guitars have come a long way the past 5 - 8 years. The use of those pre-programmed parts and patterns is a bit lazy, because with some virtual instruments you can tweak it much more to your liking and make it more human (timing, velocity etc.) The secret is to put some work and time into it. Devil's in the details. Some virtual guitars like UJAM and Native Instruments are great to get fast results when writing. But with virtual guitars like Electri6ty and Acou6tics from Vir2 and the Impact Soundworks Shreddage 3 guitars, you can program much more detailed performances. When you layer your guitars subtly with synth parts (like Howard Benson does for example) you can create awesome guitar parts and no one will believe you never touched a real guitar. (But you need to dive into adding modulation, vibrato, bends etc. with automation.) Golden age for producers who don't play guitar or don't play it well enough to get all the good chords and inversions etc. Another key to getting a great sound is layering different inversions, some virtual guitars let you place a capo on the neck or chose the neck position and string selection.

    I really liked the live performance better than the standalone midi, but thought having them layered was awesome. I did think that the natural muted was a bit muddy, whereas the mini was much cleaner and had a bit more high-end, but as you stated, a bit of EQ clean up on the live muted probably made all the difference.
    Enjoyed the comparison on this one more than the drum one, is I really like hearing the comparison between live instrumentation versus midi, rather than the previous one, which was more of a mix comparison.
    That 12-string though, freaking beautiful and a killer add.

    there are things about listening critically to the live guitar that can be applied to programmed VST's. Things like the legato notes on the lead, the stops on the acoustic chords, string noise, etc. I am not advocating doing away with live musicians, on the contrary (as a live player for nearly 40 years), but it can help to make our productions just that much better.

    Well, on blending your MIDI with your friend's real guitar parts I would say a) up to a point adding another track is always likely to thicken and enrich the vibe and b) the acid test would be if your friend had cut a second complimentary real part himself. If I was a betting man I would wager that would easily have come out on top. Awesome tune btw, props to you both :)

    I like the tone of the midi guitar that he made though. Better for the mix and the vibe of the song.
    Sounds like the guitarist is using the bridge pickup of his guitar, but I think the middle pickup position, which I believe the guitar vst is recorded in is way better suited.

    It is very important to mix live instruments with midi. Especially on lead high gain solo guitar (natural/pick harmonics) and drums. Even you can mix it not only with VST plug-ins, but with exactly MIDI sounds like standard windows midi or whatever. Or even just the white noise for supporting the snare;)

    I guess it depends on multiple things, but perhaps most on the place within the mix. If its merely some background fills, you can get away with quite a lot before anyone spots the "fake guitars". However, when it plays a more prominent role in your composition, i would not even blend them in and just stick with a good musician and his/her instrument. You could use it to line out the idea for a session guitarist though.

    *Hi Nathan, Wanted to know your opinion on this*
    (as I want to make the kind of music you do)

    *I’m looking for a good pop (jazz/funk/soul) brass*

there are so many options I don’t know what to choose,

    I don’t need very complicated stuff and “all” the options (like VSL etc.)

    but something I can rely on to enhance and drive the track,

    something that I will not have to push back in the mix,

    I already have Session horns pro,
    (as I have the “Komplete 13 Ultimate Collectors Edition”

that I know you love) but it doesn’t do the job for me
    (it leaks the… I don’t know what)

    Would really appreciate your opinion

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey tho is a tough one - often I layer the pop stuff with the orchestral stuff - so maybe use Session horns along side a more "orchestral" library. I haven't gotten too deep on the pop horn stuff. I have actually had live players come in whenever I can / it's not an option for everyone obviously.
      I know EastWest has their Pop horns but I've never used it.

    • @Jacob-iv7qg

      @@NathanJamesLarsen Thank you, never tried to mix in "orchestral horns"

      are you using the orchestral horns for more

      “background” and “legato” notes,
and “pop horns” for upfront stuff?
      also: if one day you try out a pop horn VST

      (For instance, EastWest Hollywood Pop Brass)

      I would REEAALLY want to know your opinion on it,

      your opinion matters to me the most

because you’re a real professional producer,
      and not another reviewer,

      so you know what works and what doesn't

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm it depends on what I'm doing. I do a lot of cinematic pop stuff so I do use orchestral horns upfront and stuff too but the vibe is different. But if it's more of a pop track is probably lean harder on the pop horns and usually would not use them melodic stuff cause that's where the realism just dies. I use it for hits and stabs. And then more background effect rather than upfront and melodic. Melodies are super hard with session horns cause there's not true legato feel. The orchestral horns definitely do better with melodies.

    Midi instruments are great, but when I use them I usually don't think of them as a replacement for the actual instrument, they're just another sound in the soundscape. For me, if the goal is to include guitar, just record a real guitar. Doing all the minor tweaks to get a midi guitar to sound like a real guitar is going to remove you from the organic process, as it's no longer a performance, it's surgery. When you're playing a guitar, all the nuances are unconscious, and all you're focusing on is conveying emotion. But hey, in the end, if it sounds good, it's good so do what you want, it's your music!

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm interesting - some of the midi options now have full blown patterns that are actually recorded and you trigger with midi. Those are much more effective than typical "melodic" patterns, because they are legitimately recordings of a pattern not spliced. However, I will say it is VERY hard - and it also really depends on the genre. It's this way with many things with MIDI - midi strings can work super well in some genres and horribly in others - even with great programming and great samples.
