Digging a Pond with an Excavator

The goal was to dig a backyard fish pond with an excavator. Time lapse video captures the progress of the two day dig and we also check in a week later to see the pond after the dust settles. Multi cameras and overhead footage with a drone detail the pond creation from start to finish.
There is a longer more detailed version of the dig here: • Digging a large Pond w...
This video begins with frogs and turtles being removed from the "test pond" prior to the heavy equipment showing up to dig the new pond. The test pond was dug a year and a half prior in order to prove that water would hold in the pond landscape even in very dry years, and it did. A water flow test is done with a pump to see how much water is flowing back into the pond once pumped out.
A large excavator and a dump truck show up to get the pond dug out. Immediately, the dump truck spins it's tires on the soft organic material of the low lying grassy area. The excavator has to push the dump truck out and then remove all of the organic matter to expose a drier sand and gravel base for the dump truck to use as a road.
Once the site is set up, digging goes well and progress is made. The majority of the pond is dug in Day 1. On the following morning, the pond has filled four feet higher with water. It makes for more blind digging in day two as the excavator has to feel for bottom when digging in the deep murky water.
In the end, over 75 loads of clean sand are removed from the giant backyard pond.
We return a week later to see how the pond water has settled in. The aqua-colored water is a true surprise and an awesome surprise effect of the sand filtered water that has filled the pond. Crystal clear! A great landscape feature.
The overhead drone gives one last look at the pond project that in the end turned out absolutely splendid.
Like and Subscribe for more future updates on this pond project, as we work to create a healthy and natural bait filled bass pond. Minnow and fishing stocking will be next.

The smaller the creature that you can show compassion for, the better person you are IMO. You're most likely an awesome person Ryan.

The pond is reflecting the green of the trees. Water has no color, but the clarity impacts its reflectivity.

To keep the lake clean, it must be regularly cleaned of silt and algae. This can be done with a dirty water motor pump and a Bagermaster suction nozzle.

Looks really good. I believe the greenish color may be algae. Myth has it that depth must be at least 12 feet to get rid of it. This is awesome!

Yes, less than two days. About 10 hours with the machine running. Very sandy and a large bucket so fairly easy digging except for the water.

Yes you are, unless you have no access to a big excavator. Get yourself some beer and watch the machine quickly build you a pond! We have a little homestead here with basically no machinery. Just added a horse for logging and pulling a cart. For the big excavator jobs we have a guy who charges around 120$/h for the big excavator with the big bucket. When he is gone is is gone and I have no expensive machinery to buy and maintain.

I've been this line of work for 44 years and could have saved you thousands of dollars and removed far more material for the money.

Good effort, you will get more biodiversity with a pond than the wetland that was there before.
