Long story short, I've never worked well with this staff since the start of the game, main reason being that you could start charging it at 97% peril, fire, and then end up exploding at 100% unlike the other staffs which gave you the grace period at 100% if you charged up before 100%. My greedy ass would blow up all the time off screen from that blunder so I forced myself in this round to get better at it.
Build isn't anything special, I just used Brain Burst to help compensate for the short ranged nature of the staff.

Trauma staff is based, I love to use it
Personally like pairing it with slightly better elite-killing weapons, then Trauma the group so ideally one of them is knocked forward into me (super vulnerable to my melee) and the rest scattered away from me. But it's also safe just to eternally CC everything, I just think it typically kills slower doing it that way.
I'm also a Trauma enjoyer myself
People underestimate how good trauma staff is, if you learn to use it it’s the ultimate crowd control period.
Yeah some people sleep on it due to its perceived lack of range but I’ve seen firsthand with my Psyker maining friends how strong it gets. I’ve just been a monkey without discipline and would constantly explode with it from damage greeding.
