    I loved this. I'm enfp, and so many people miss the depth that enfps can have, especially for causes. You have such great analyses of these characters. Really looking forward to more.

      Thanks Sasha, I agree completely! There's a lot of misunderstanding out there about ENFPs in general.

    I keep checking in and every day I feel like you double in subscribers! Insane man! Loving the video so far and in agreement on Frodos type! 💕You see how important his relationships are to him as well as his individualism, he is truly a campaigner who does his best doing the right thing while being true to himself. And yes we do underestimate the influence of the One Ring on his energy.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha thanks man! The majority of the growth has come from bigger channels sharing my content, particularly you and David Badurina, for which I'm super appreciative!
      Yess Frodo is a true campaigner and fits neatly into that ENFP stereotype, and even with the One Ring he still kicked ass!

    Man, hearing that Frodo is an ENFP just made me feel so much more for him than I already did. Being an ENFP myself, I relate to being a yes person and giving everything for a cause I believe in, but man, it hurts so freaking much to see his suffering and his distance during the movies. It hurts to see him hurting internally man. It already hurt before, but putting myself in his place now, it hurts so darn more.

    as an infp myself, I always thought that Frodo was an infp and now I feel very bad for not having considered how much the Ring may have affected his personality and his mental health. Even after many years Frodo is no longer the same person as before, the experience has changed him forever and it's heartbreaking to think of the playful and carefree person who was at the beginning of the film.

    This is why this channel is so good. There are so many misstypes online but few take the time to investigate the details, the extenuating circumstances that may make a type present as another, such as Frodo always being typed as an INFP. It's understandable why that is so common, but it's only based on the state Frodo is in after the burden of the ring has weighed him down. The fact you could explain his real type speaks to your expertise in understanding the cognitive functions.

    Oh my i love everything about this video😭❤️ I'm living for Bilbo's analysis! ENFP frodo is making me so emotional lol, also it finally makes sense, it bothered me so much that he was always typed as an INFP based on the analysis of his altered behaviour throughout the movies, it just doesn't make sense to type him (and characters with this kind of trope in general) for how he acts while under the influence of the ring. Knowing that he is an ENFP and seeing how he acts in the movies hurts so much😂
    This is perfect, the guitar playing, the analysis and the passion you put into it is really refreshing
    It would be so cool if you ever decided to make more series like this... they are so entertaining, fun and informative! Would be great to have a real analysis of some characters.
    Online you only find the presumed mbti type without any explanation as to why they typed them that way, or just superficial ones..
    On my way to watch the other 2 parts, thanks for the video!💜💚

    I don’t have as much of a background in MBTI to qualify any judgments of what these character’s types are, but I will say listening to your reasoning as to why each character is that type adds so much more depth to a story I am deeply invested in.

    I would be excited to see more videos like this! Your evaluations look air-tight, so that's good - although my favorite typing of Frodo is INFJ... I feel like the movies portrayed him as more of an extrovert; possibly to speed along the story... I miss the conflicted nature of book Frodo

    • @CognitivePersonality

    I find it would be more interesting if you typed non fictional persons, so it gives us a real life representation of how you perceive the types to be like in real life. Types in your system at least come across as possibly different than in a lot of other systems, so it would be interesting to see which person you would type as which type and why. It would give us a sense of perspective and a way to compare your system to others better.
    The problem with fictional characters is that they are (as you mention) less complex than real people. However, I find the problem not that they're more simplistic than real people, but rather that they problably do not really fully fit into any type perfectly, as characters in stories for example sometimes also do things in order to push the story forwards. A character might be like one thing with a certain writer and different with another. Of course with LOTR the writer is the same person, which is good.

    Maybe I'm so introverted because I'm always struggling with my own worst enemy: myself. Part of me hates myself and is highly critical, pessimistic and fearful. The other part of me is creative, energetic, fun-loving and caring. These two sides are always fighting each other.
    I really relate to Sam in the movies and in the novels. I understand Sam's viewpoint and personality as it is portrayed in the stories.
    Your description of Frodo and Sam's friendship is so right on. I love it.

      As a newly retyped ENTP from an ENFJ I related to your breakdown of Bilbo sooooo well.
      The part where you highlighted the darkness in Bilbo that came out and was quickly followed by shame, I was like, "😮 that's me!"
      Harry, thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you're doing. Your videos are helping me heal from a lifetime of masking. I would like to add that as an ENTP that unmasking is soooo uncomfortable and terrifying many times. People say they have those "embarrassing" dreams of being naked in public and how terrible that is... Well for me unmasking feels like it's not clothes I'm missing but my skin and my soul is exposed. If you have any recommendations on how to navigate that, I'm all ears.

    The guitar playing! It's so... Makes you stop any sense of speed you had and takes you along with itself, at its pace, trying niether to attract by the promise of something, nor to impress by its own good opinion of itself, just, existing, not even prettily, but just being and being so comfortably and balancedly.... I want to say it was beautiful, but it is not heartwarming as the things I usually call beautiful .... It is mind warming, it is this beautiful feeling of balance, but not tranquillity, like swaying in a stable equilibrium at moody frequencies... Yet all seeming only different manifestations of a single one.... It was beautiful

    I'm admittedly writing this before I watch the video, but I just wanna say that the movie doesn't capture the personalities of the characters as the books do, in many cases. After watching, I'd like to say I really enjoyed this video. I never would have considered Bilbo as an ENTP, but I can totally see it now. Amazing! As a probable INFJ, I've always related the most to Gandalf, but possibly even more to Treebeard. I don't supposed you'd consider typing the chief ent?

      Thank you!!
      Oh yes I totally agree the movie had some very different versions of the characters to the book - it's fair to say this is more of a movie analysis :)
      So glad you can also see Bilbo as an ENTP! I relate to Gandalf the Grey a lot too, and definitely know INFJs who are more like Treebeard - I'll likely not cover the ent leader in the next episode but may very well do another episode thereafter!

  • @fundindylgobrad1598
    @fundindylgobrad1598 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bilbo is an ISFJ. If you look at the books and the Hobbit, he acts the way he does because he is Si gripping. His adventure was built upon him learning to develop his inferior function (Ne). After he comes back he goes back to the normal hobbit way of life (which is very Si) and eventually gets fed up with the long life the ring gave him. So on his birthday in LOTR he throws down a party and leaves everything , to chase that Ne feeling of adventure he left behind.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this may be more of a culture thing - I like your angle, but most Hobbits under that theory would be ISFJs, whereas I would argue Bilbo always had an Ne predisposition, which Gandalf of course nurtured; on scale to other Hobbits I would classify both Bilbo and Frodo as Ne dominants :)

    • @fundindylgobrad1598
      @fundindylgobrad1598 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CognitivePersonality I think Frodo was much more open to the whole ''adventuring'' business, maybe because of the influence Bilbo had on him which is why i agree he is ENFP (or INFP). I can sort of buy the ENTP Bilbo typing if we take LOTR in a vacuum, but read again the first few chapters of the Hobbit or watch the start of the movies. Would an ENTP act the way Bilbo did at the dwarves arriving/dinner scene? He is reasonably confused/concerned about strangers coming into his house, but he still remains extremely polite and goes along with the dwarves acting like they own the place. His attempts of arguing against their actions/preventing other dwarves from coming in are extremely mild. When he finally leaves on his grand adventure, the first thought he has is forgetting his handkerchief. Now you can argue that he acted the way he did because he was under extreme stress/threat from multiple armed strangers coming into his home, but surely an ENTP would do something a bit more different than ''comply and hope they go away''.
      And yes i do believe Hobbits are a very Si culture but not limited to ISFJs. More like SJ's. You can reasonably type some of the Hobbits like Rossie as ESFJ, Sackville-Baggins as ESTJ and that grumpy one in Fellowship as ISTJ :). Merry, Pippin,Sam and Frodo are the exceptions not the rule. They went out and saved the world, they came back and defeated Saruman. But Bilbo himself is the OG, he is the character other Hobbits are based on. His is the story of the ''In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit'' overcoming his innate psychology and doing something which no other Hobbit has ever done ultimately inspiring a new generation that goes on to save the world. Bilbo's story is so much more inspiring if you look at him as Ne inf. And i'm saying this as an ENTP myself.

    I love the subtle and so nuanced way you approach each of the 16 personalities and choosing LOTR for illustrating them is brilliant. Yet, I still cannot stand with you when it comes to Bilbo and Gandalf. Imho, it is vice versa: Gandalf is ENTP and Bilbo is INFJ. Being ENTP myself and knowing pretty well INFJs who are my favourites (after ENTPs, of course:)) ) first thing that I find strikingly not at all characteristic for ENTPs is Bilbo's lifestyle, which is extremely organised and home-oriented. It is true that we like being surrounded by nice things and sometimes attached to objects (especially when young and less developed, when our people-pleasing nature is not yet well controlled), but never to such extent as to make home and stability it is associated with the central theme of our lives. Bilbo hesitated so much when he had to choose 'the adventure', it was a struggle for him, but as an a real INFJ (who, at their core, are a bit of a rebellious too, and attracted by adventure), he finally responded positive to his destiny's call. He is not at all as invested as Gandalf in taking responsability for the social vibe, and if so, he does it by 'sensorial' means, ensuring, for instance, that his guests are well treated from a physical point of view (food, for instance) but not involving in conversation etc - which is so unspecific for an ENTP. On the contrary, Gandalf is the one who knows very well each of them, and the one who is 'the salt and pepper' of each group. There are many other things to say about that, I'll stop here. But anyway, excellent channel and analysis, keep it up!❤💫🤗

    I am sorry I just don’t see any Fi or Te in Sam. I don’t watch the movies as much as you, but I have watched it recently and all I see is ISFJ. My friend is an ISFJ and swears to me he is related to Sam and I personally see it.
    The argument for INFP is good, but I notice that many ISFJs get mistyped as INFPs and I feel Sam is one of those. He talks about the past so much from the beginning when he mentions the furthest he has ever been for home and mentions stories as a way to influence Frodo to continue. But the Si isn’t what convinced me, the Fe did. I see no practicality to Sam with the cooking on top of the hill and knowing Golem is suspicious without any proof whatsoever from the beginning. I mean Sam is just so selfless and focused on harmony from the end of the first movie when he is willing to drown for his friend to the end of the third when he doesn’t stop Frodo despite knowing Sauron will win because he can’t hurt his friend.
    Good video, keep it up.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks for the great counter-argument! In many ways I am in agreement and also agree many ISFJs mistype as INFPs owing to behavioural similarities :)
      I typed Sam bearing in mind he is a Hobbit, which are typically more conservative than humans. As such, Si-Ti behaviours would tend to be amplified whereas the more rebellious Ne-authority of the INFP will be more subdued.
      I do see Sam's internal dialogue as more Fi-Si, which will have a nostalgic slant anyway, and his external dialogue as more of a Te-Ne contingency - the Te of the INFP tends to be supressed when allowing others to make decisions for them, and even when performing a task or instructions on behalf of another. The weathertop cooking is definitely ISFJ-like but I would also argue it is also possible within an INFP when carried away being of service to others.
      INFPs often 'vibe' individuals and come to a judgement of them based upon this, whereas an ISFJ judgement would be more of a conscious comparison between what is known and what is not. Both of these instances can result in a similar judgement to what Sam gives Gollum, and I would lean more towards INFP here because it is less rational and more emotional/fearful.
      INFPs can be utterly selfless when aiding a loved one due to their powerful relational empathy, seeing as they do their loved ones as extensions of the self. The loyalty and love Sam gives to Frodo speaks to me more of an Fi harmony than an Fe one, though I can totally see a very strong case for ISFJ in all these instances :)
      Cheers!

      Interestingly I have the same conclusion because I have a good friend who’s like Samwise. I always saw him as ISFJ, solid concrete type who adheres to tradition thus hard to step out of his usual ways. He (my friend) admires me because I am more daring, adventurous, and unconventional (compare to him; but I am no Jack Sparrow). For me, I know that he will always be a friend because that’s just who he is, loyal to his friends for life. He will be there whenever I need a friend.

    Awesome analisis and point of view...there are a heck load of Introverts in the Tolkien tales. I am big LOTR fan. Interesting point about Frodo..Us INFP are like Frodo WITH the ring..the world Is our heavy burden just like the ring was to Frodo and that is how we react to the world..it is like we carry our problems..and we do need someone like Sam to guide and "snap us out" of situations and our own heavy thoughts that we often get lost into. I think that when Infp are a child they are not infp..they become It..info Is a reaction to the world impacting and changing their personality. lot like carefree and cheerful Frodo at the beginning.. before the ring came to him...then when reality comes you grow up and become like Frodo with the ring. A lot of people dont consider Frodo at the very beginning. Brilliant video.

    Excellent video..i too adore LOTR.
    Such interesting point of view ..well said and well carried out..but i still strongly believe that Frodo is an infp being an INFP-T myself.
    You are right Frodo at the beginning was cheerful..confident.. bright..
    that is an INFP thriving!!!!! The worlds weight and unkindness makes us withdrawn and want to refuge in our complex inner world.An INFP happy and confortable ..an infp surrounded by people he adores and has known all his Life...and they too understand him...he had the life that all INFP dream about before the ring came to him and put everything he knew and loved in danger...us INFP get an extreem strength and decisivness when something we love is in danger..and we are willing to risk our lives for something we love..that is why he got ready right away..our strength and best quality is to love peace and unselfishly protect with no desire for power..that Is why Frodo was the right one for the ring task..thus a true INFP.
    Turbulent Mediators report feeling negative emotions to a far greater extent than Assertive Mediators, and this is a big difference only amogst infp...Imagine how different the ring task would be if Frodo was another personality type...like a ENTJ or ESTP or ...Imagine boromir or ghimli or pippin or any less emotional character bearing the ring...tho in a dark, uncontrollable void they could take on the task differently and would recover faster and better..kind of like real men who go to jail or war...once ended they all have different reaction to their trauma. Feel less absorb less..feel more absorb more.
    I think Sam Is more of an ISFP or ENFP he was Frodos faithful stronghold..and my friend and hero in life is an ENFP ..soo much like Sam.
    Merry and pippin spot on...merry Is hard to understand and you grasped It!!

      Nice analysis! I'm fairly confident in my ENFP diagnosis (somewhat open to Sam being an ISFJ>INFP as suggested by commentors) of Frodo owing to the way he processes information and reacts to his environment, but in terms of values and perception I agree Frodo is quite INFP-like :)

    You may be right about Frodo (for the movies) but I disagree with Sam. An ISTJ could easily fit all your descriptions as well, and I don't see Ne as being high enough for him to be INFP.
    You hit gold with Merry. I completely agree.
    Pippin is an ESFP. He doesn't lead with Fi. Those who's dominant function is an introverted judging function are typically far more stubborn and individualist. Pippin leads with perception. He isn't immediately making value judgements on everything, instead allowing experiences to take place and waiting to reflect and make judgements until after.

    Is this a part of the Isfp archetype? I've seen other people say that ISFP's are lazy also but it seems like according to your system laziness woudn't correlate with the functions.

      Haha I enjoyed that scene. I certainly wouldn't say Pippin represents a hardcore ISFP archetype though, and while I do not adhere to archetypes I wouldn't describe that of the ISFP as being lazy. The Se authority of Merry and Pippin provlicate them towards loss the self in the moment, which can in some instances lead to a hedonistic lifestyle.
      Laziness can occur for a variety of cognitive reasons so I certainly wouldn't associate it more with one function than another.

    What is the very last thing Sam does before he and Frodo leave Bag End rushing off into the wild?

      I wish I could recall a mention of this from the books, but from what the film implied I imagine it would be an off-scene of him packing his seasoning and cookware!

      OK, one more. Bilbo and Frodo took the white ship to the Undying Lands.
      A year or two later, Frodo was living with Sam in the Shire.
      Explain.
      Hint:
      Another way to ask this is, in 'The Lord of the Rings' movie, we saw TWO Frodos. Explain.

      @@rayw3332 Hah, well there are a couple of ways we can approach this.
      Gollum was presented as having two halves, which if interpreted as more than a personality split could justify the theory of Frodo losing the part of himself that was influenced by the ring. Thus, magic essentially leaves Middle Earth.
      A second possibility here is Sam having a child called Frodo ;)

    merry...but why does istp create new ways of doing things? doesnt that require Ne and Istps are having the blindspot there?
    bilbo... never show yourself weak in front of people, thats imo accurate. I avoid it at any cost.
    I am also shure that Entp invents new ways if doing things. got and get scolded fir that a lot, but NeTi needs to do that.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great points! Ne users can indeed take new situations in their stride more easily, whereas Ni users would form their plans more easily by building upon previous Se experience - since Merry is used to running away and general mischief, he seemlessly formulates plans in his head using his Ti-Ni frameworking.
      The ISTP is great at overcoming new situations through adaptation of existing frameworks :)

    I like your list, but think sam is an isfj but i maybe biased due to reading the books too. Sam always speaks in the what is, never what if. Infp although loyal cannot compete with si dom dedication to a task or a promise. Gardening, horses the only hobbit to bring up marriage tradition all isfj things. Also always saying mr frodo and insisting others respect frodos role as most important fe parent. Sam is a soldier committed to the task given to him by Gandalf the higher authority. Ne inferior fear of Gandalf turning him into something hideous se nemesis making him undesirable for marriage. Rosie a bartender and lets stereotype her as an esfp lol good marriage.
    I do not think infp couldnt be possible but i never thought of sam as abstract.

      This is a very well thought out analysis - I'm definitely open to Sam being an ISFJ for the reasons you have mentioned, but I would also say ISFJs tend to exert more leadership and analytical contribution that Sam does, who is more defined by his loyalty and power of observation.
