    Only halfway through watching right now. So far, I completely agree!
    LOTR typing has been one of my favorites of your series (maybe my actual favorite) because not only do you dissect the characters' personalities so well, but you have many examples and visuals---brings your intelligent thoughts together for visual learners and those who do well with story examples or anecdotes.
    Looking forward to hearing the rest later today.

    Great analysis as always. Just finished reading your book too. I really appreciate how you focus your analysis on cognitive functions and the interactions between them, and avoid gross stereotyping, it's really a breath of fresh air on youtube. By any chance are you a Star Wars fan as well?

      Ah, thank you! So glad you enjoyed the book too :)
      That's a difficult question to answer these days.. I certainly watched the originals on repeat, and my school circle were all Star Wars fanatics so I was a fan of sorts. I enjoy the prequel memes too! On the whole I wouldn't call myself a fan of that in the same way I am for LOTR though.

    Thank you Harry! My brain always feels bigger after watching (& re-watching your content 😁). Have you ever read any DragonLance fantasy novels? I'm currently re-reading the Chronicles trilogy and started typing the characters for fun. Like you said, fictional characters are great for observing different behaviors and learning about the cognitive functions!

    Love these! (As you can probably tell by now I love all things LOTR, lol!) Never would have occurred to me about the cognitive switch with Gandalf when he turned white but it makes total sense - also Saruman's slide into corruption may provide some interesting insights into why ISTJs have such a reputation/tendency toward personal suspicion with change... But I'd have to ask some of them what their thoughts are before I allow myself to go too far down that rabbit hole; sometimes theory is a little too much fun for me!

    I know what you mean by not liking the dichotomy between an INTJ and an INFJ. I think why I have such trouble figuring out which one I am because I'm a bit of both. Whether I extrovert thinking or feeling changes quite fluidly depending on what is happening around me, how I feel mentally and physically on the day. I can think logically and dispassionately quite easily, but I also find myself much more able to tell how people are feeling and to care deeply about others' feelings often at the expense of my own feelings.
    Maybe it is because I spent a lot of time growing up around my mother and grandmothers who were all highly attuned to the needs and feelings of others. So, I was raised to really develop extroverted feeling while perhaps at heart being much more introverted in every way, especially my focus on my own wants and needs. I was isolated to some degree by being born with double vision and frequent high fevers, which resulted in my reflexes and dexterity (both physical and social) not being developed as much or as quickly as most of my peers. I wasn't capable of doing the things that the other kids did in a small, ranching culture community and I never really developed much of an interest in doing what the other kids did.
    I preferred to stay home in my room and draw rather abstract representations of the stories that my imagination was and is always coming up with. I'd show the pictures to my family and tell them long, detailed stories that the pictures illustrated. They'd humor me, but never did encourage me to actually pursue writing, drawing or painting as a profession. I've come around to writing, and to a lesser degree, drawing as a profession now after trying and failing at doing all sorts of things that I thought I 'ought' to be doing for careers.
    I've taken the personality tests in college classes and more recently online, and I always score either INTJ or INFJ. I seem to score INFJ during times of lower stress in my life, when things are going well in general. When I'm under stress or am feeling depressed to some degree, I score INTJ and find myself caring very little about others feelings, becoming much colder and more logical in my thinking.
    I enjoyed this Lord of the Rings video series. Using fictional characters to illustrated cognitive functions is indeed quite effective. I think that Tolkien intentionally populated his stories with characters who had these different cognitive functions so that his world would be more believable and relatable than if the characters were 'flat' or one dimensional 'action - bots' or puppets that simply did things solely for the purpose of advancing the plot.

    Hmmm, I don't know LotR much at all, but I find something interesting about Eomer.
    Him being an ESFJ with a heavy Te dip.
    What makes you conclude that someone is in a heavy dip instead of it being the other way around?
    It could also be an ESTJ with a heavy Fe dip.
    How could you identify this? Is it the way that he uses Te in an unconscious manner?
    Or maybe it's his Ti oppositional that gives it away?
    I'd like to hear your thoughts, about dipping in general because I don't know much about LotR but feel free to give examples.
    While I have watched your video on dipping and understand the concept, actually identifying it in others and practical application is another story.
    Thank you for reading!

    Hi Harry, I've had a question that I've been thinking about for a while now and would like to get your opinion on. Do you that Fi or Fe is used more in evoking emotions while reading/watching fiction? Or at least are stimulated in different ways? It seems to me like introverted feeling would be dominantly used since no emotions are actually being expressed, they all seem to be created in the viewers head however it is still in some ways fiction is an externalised source of emotion.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly they're both incredibly useful for creating relatable content and engaging fully with that content being absorbed. Having either function in a 'non-optional' position (e.g. dominant or authority) can make it easier to stay fully engaged without detaching, but, honestly, any type can engage fully with these fields :)

    Knowing ENFJ who are standard type, highly FeSe convergent (plus with developed Te-Ne dip) they remind me of Elrond. Also Galadriel INTJ all the way. Denethor clearly an unhealthy ESFP, Fi authority painfully obvious here 😆
    You're on point with all these characters in my opinion.

  • @haleffect9011
    @haleffect9011 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to admit, that I don't believe that Elrond is an ENFJ at all
    1) he is comfortable in a leadership role, and he presides over many councils and people, he readily takes a back-seat to let others talk. (ie. the council)
    2) He is incredibly pragmatic, and is very judgemental about people comparing them against his own personal ideals. And I would say ideals, not memories. I don't think he's past focussed at all (considering he's thousands of years old) he accepts change and works with it(As seen with accepting the Elves will leave), he just doesn't like the change that's occurring.
    3) He rarely comes up with new ideas, relying on the innovations of others and then consolidating those into something actionable. But once ideas are formed which conform to his ideals, he is ready to compromise his plans to ensure that something is actionable.
    This Reeks of the Fi-Te axis.
    He sees in the far far future, he doesn't think one step ahead, but many many steps ahead.He doesn't like the change that is occuring, but he deftly works with it. His goal isn't only the destruction of the ring, but also the future of the elves, the running of middle-Earth in accordance with his values.
    This suggests a Ni-Se axis.
    Next, his rudder, the thing which he relates to the most is his own vision of the future. his perspective, his view, and his worries about it not being up to his ideals. (Ni-Fi) And to achieve this, he will collect all the information around him, he will organise and structure the people around him, and he will give them a purpose and goals to achieve, (council to destroy the ring). (Te-Se)
    So I would say that Elrond is a far more Te-Se focussed INTJ rather than an ENFJ.
    I wouldn't say ENTJ since I believe that his Ni and Fi are convergent in his case.
    While Galariel, though yes she also seems to have a Ni-Fi axis, we barely see any Te at all. little action and no planning. I feel that the axis with her is reversed. She sees a vision of herself in the future, then wears that identity, that's all good. but then doesn't collate or collect any knowledge for decisive action, and barely engages Te at all. however, she does engage Se quite a bit by aiding the fellowship. She doesn't first see the good the fellowship will give middle-Earth, but first sees them as people and sees into their futures for their own sake, not a future for future's sake. This feels like Fi-Ni, not Ni-Fi.
    Then we don't see her plan, she doesn't know what will happen nor does she collect information, she just knows that certain gifts will be useful in the future, a focussed external lens. This feels Se-Te.
    I would rather place her as a very healthy ISFP than an INTJ who only engages Ni at the service of identity and ignores Te at the benefit of Se.

    • @AnyaAnnika67
      @AnyaAnnika67 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can grasp some of your points re Elrond but I think he is indeed an ENFJ as one myself. ENFJs are actually quite naturally adept at leadership remember they have that heavy TeNe dip that acts in service of their Ni. Irrespective the Fe Ti axis is very clear. I think re INTJ where you're getting somewhat confused is that both are feeling convergent & thinking divergent types & he likely has a heavy INTJ subnetwork going on but this is through a primary ENFJ gateway. ENFJs can happily take a back seat indeed I'm a divergent TiNi subtype. ENFJs are natural pragmatists & strategists probably the most strategic of the all the types owing to TiNi divergence.

  • @jacob_massengale

    Care to explain why Legolas and Galadriel seam so different, both being INTJ's?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sure - this is a good example of how cognitive type does not equate to personality type. I'd say Aragorn and Gandalf the Grey are also pretty different.
      Galadriel is a lot more Ni-Fi heavy and significantly less ambiverted than Legolas, who by comparison has a fluid Ni-Se axis and a personal identity that demands the employment of a physical skillset more than constant Ni-Fi consultation. I'd say they both occupy two very different places within the vast spectrum the INTJ letters stand for, but even if this were not the case their completely different identities would affect the way they engage their respective cognitions enormously :)
