Kudos for your knowledge of the CNC rounder. Still think I’m looking in the wrong direction. I was thinking bench top CNC would work better for smaller furniture projects repeatable task. Looking at holiday lawn ornaments and outdoor furniture Grandkids keep sake items hope chest. Thinks to keep me busy and make money on the side. Please let me know if I’m heading down the wrong path. Enjoyed your video and hope we are on the same page I’m sold on the longmill

One quick question: do I need to vacuum while the router is working or can I just leave it do the job and vacuum later? Thanks!

how do you ensure the machine is not twisted (i.e. high left top corner/lower right bottom corner) as well as square. When I built my Millright carve king to learn on, it appears the y rails ar not exactly even in height. Since the machine is basically fused as 1 unit it is pretty much square. This machine (longmill) as others are not fused so was wondering how to best square the rails (y) and x, as well as eliminating any twist .

This is something that I am looking very deeply into and find your channel very helpful in making informed decisions however many of the videos are from the other side of the pond,my main concern is to find the right machine for my needs with great aftersale service so when I break something I can get a new part quickly and not have to wait a month while it's shipped from the other side of the world.
The long mill keeps coming up as a very robust machine but I need back up in the UK.
      Thanks Des

Wow, I'm brand new and was exploring CNC routers today and online and after about 2-3 hours today, I decided this was probably too many variables in systems, set-ups, software and learning curve that I just could not grasp enough to even get me in right direction. This evening, I came across this video and was like hour and 47minutes, there is no way I could possibly watch that much more on this subject. I watched every minute of it and was so impressed with the precise details and timely information you crammed into that time frame. Excellent job! I am for sure ordering the router and will go thru every effort to use your links as you deserve every bit of support and plan to get into more of your videos. Whew!! such relief now... LOL

I spent two years researching CNCs (I did not have the space at the time, but was planning ahead). BLUF: if you are convinced that you want to invest in a CNC, for whatever reason, then plan on buying the machine you would upgrade to. FIRST you need to establish your budget! Think best value for your dollar, not lowest price (scary to think we sent several missions to the moon and the lowest bidder got the work...) Then size of bed, router motor or spindle, manual or automatic tool change, look at dust collection - these machines make a LOT of sawdust, also Z height, which relates to how thick a piece of materiel will fit under the bit (this also affects the height of 3d carving you may want to make.
IMHO, desktops are not well suited for commercial work (cabinets and furniture).
Very well done video. I originally was looking for a bench top, but after spending hours on TH-cam, I decided to go with the machine I would normally upgrade to. In my case, my budget was around $25K. I went with a Legacy Woodworking Machinery model Maverick 3x5 with ATC. I was not about to spend that kind of money without a hands-on look at the machine. Met Legacy at the Atlanta IWF. Great machine, very well made, good people, great support and training. Also, this machine has a vertical workstation and a turning center with a 10" throw (diameter) and a 57" length.
I've been woodworking for about 65 years, so a little more experience than most....
The Longmill is a great machine for the money and a good place to start, especially with a limited budget.

I can't imagine how long it took you to shoot and produce that video. Excellent, and thank you for that effort. It gave me a ton of info for my search. I unexpectedly had to retire after a stroke and I am back in the shop with my son, with not as much dexterity as before, so a CNC will definitely help make up for a loss of some fine motor skills. My son is a workhorse but I am not going to let him have all the fun. Thank you again. Now I have more of your videos to watch.

I stumbled on your videos indirectly and have watched this particular video with interest because I have built from scratch - A 30”x40” CNC wood router with ball screws - a 24”x24” CNC laser etcher (5 watt) - and a CNC Plasma table to cut 5’x10’ sheets (using MACH4 and other software.
The point I wanted to get to is that building these devices was a great way to learn all aspects of the CNC world - BUT - it was a lot of time and a LOT of work, trial and error.
Everything you have said in this video is dead on accurate and truthful…
I champion you for getting a Bit Company going as this is a critical area of the CNC router setup. As important as the CAD/CAM software and the machine itself.
I looked at the Long Mill router - great quality and value. The software looks great too.
So… I’d urge folks to pay attention to what you’re saying as I’ve been down this path the hard way… what you’re suggesting with the Long Mill and software… as a safe and legitimate product solution to just get into it.
I maintain Flight Sims for the Army for a living and evaluate complex systems all the time.
    Great videos!

I watched a previous iteration of this video (and countless others of Garrett's videos) as I planned on buying my first CNC machine last year. I pulled the trigger in November, set the machine up and started using it in February - making some awesome projects as I learned... for myself and what has turned out to be several dozen clients so far as a side gig.
I took things to the next level yesterday with running my first 3D carve.
I have Garrett and this channel to thank for an amazing launch to an amazing journey - I have the MK1 Longmill, Vectric VCarve Pro... and have even bought a number of bits from IDC so far and will keep expanding my collection as the need arises, even with the extra shipping costs to 🇨🇦 - totally worth it.
If you're on the fence and new to IDC Woodcraft, buckle up and watch, watch and watch. I'm what... five months into using my machine? I still love watching the machine do its thing!! Join us!!

I seldom comment on social media, but I believe in supporting and showing appreciation when it's deserved. Great video btw. It really does show that you truly love, enjoy and care for what you do. The best thing about you as a person, a human being is how personal you run your business. Meaning what you did for John. People always say big companies will never have the personal touch and experience a small business offers its customers. But it all starts from the top. Being kind in business is seen sometimes as weak and powerless. It p****s me off that people lost respect. They forgot; Kindness is Golden. An act of kindness moves mountains. I'm just returning what you have offered to a lot of us through your stories and videos. Thank you for sharing all the hard work, skills and knowledge with us. It's very much appreciated. I have to get back to finishing watching your video now and figure out how I'm going to saddle up my cnc to ride it lol.

Tony, wow thanks you for all the kind words my friend. I'm truly humbled. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I couldn't agree with you more about businesses needing to treat their customers with kindness and as people. I feel a lot of businesses fall short on that end and I've made it my mission to put that at the forefront of what I do here at IDC. I'm glad to be a part of your CNC journey and hopefully make things a little easier along the way! Keep up the great work brother!

Very informative and a good sales pitch. Sold. I wasn't really looking to spend that much on a machine as it's all new to me. However, you convinced me that it was worth the investment, particularly as I can always get some exercise riding on it.
I went down the list of essentials and figured I could stretch to it at a push, depending on shipping costs to the UK.
That was, until I went to choose the software (obviously need the 3d carving ability). Are they kidding! It costs more than the machine!
I wanted the Vectric software because that's the one you demonstrate. I figured I could buy the CNC with all the bells and whistles, along with the laser module and your full router bit set, and the software would STILL cost more! That's just insane.
Thanks very much for the informative video. I will continue to watch all of them, in the hope that by the time I've watched them all, I will have won the lottery so that I can afford the software 🙂 In the meantime I will just watch others creating and have CNC envy.

Ian, glad to hear this video cleared some things up for you brother. Keep working hard and learning everything you can!
On the software side of things, you can get Vcarve desktop or pro at more of an affordable price. With that you can still carve 3d projects, you just have a lot of restriction in terms of being able to edit 3d projects. Food for thought brother!

It was your videos that lead me to get the Longmill 9 months ago. Now I am making signs, catchall trays, and my creation this past weekend was a wall hanging gun rack. I can not leave well enough alone. I removed the top spoil board, used a 1/4 end mill and cut through the table top I made for it. Going to water proof the frame and make a stainless water bed the size of the cut area. I an adding a plasma torch to add metal designs to my wood signs. I found in G-sender you can turn on the laser option. That will provide 4.5 volts the the Laser/Spindle pins on the controller. Hook that to a relay switch and connect the relay to the plasma cutter and we are off to the races.

This video is very worth the time and did what you said it would do, give me confidence in how to evaluate the quality of CNC products in the market. I like how you demonstrated the extra rigidity of the rails the 2 extra feet provide by standong on the gantry with your feel close to the rails, where it can support your weight. Your mass distributed at the ends of the gantry, near the rails likely enhanced the stability of the machine. The closer your feet are to the rails the more your weight is transferred to the rails instead of the gantry..The extruded gantry would be much stronger if the extruded shape was completed triangles imho, instead of an open tube.

Hi Garrett, Finally a complete picture of CNC crafting. Your approach was informative and easily understandable. I've been a looky looky of CNC's for a couple of years now and I was convinced the Onefinity was the most robust machine but after your demonstration with standing on the gantry and detailed explanation of the downside of tubular structure I am no longer interested in that brand. This video has more useful information than and other one I've seen. I was shocked at how reasonable the cost was for the Longmill. Thanks you earned a new subscriber from me.

Thank you for such an in-depth video. I am a fine art painter and I have started using scroll saw pieces in my larger art projects. Then I started thinking maybe I could use CNC routers too to expand even more possibilities. I may not be using it every day but when I use it on a project it has to be good. Most CNC routers that meet what I want to do are above four grand or more. But I am surprised to find out about Longmill, the price is great and you have put out everything in great detail. So now I understand what it takes to get into CNC routers. My single art project would pay for the investment in this machine. I am creating an extra work space in my backyard which should be done in three to four months. Then I will be ready for a Longmill. In the meantime, I will keep on watching all your videos. Thank you again and I am excited!!!

YuvakTuladhar, That's a fascinating transition from fine art painting to incorporating scroll saw pieces and now considering CNC routing for your art projects. The way you're expanding your creative process is genuinely exciting. It's incredible how incorporating different techniques can open up a whole new dimension in artwork.
The LongMill could indeed be a game-changer for your projects, offering both affordability and the capabilities you need. It's great to hear that you're finding the videos comprehensive and helpful. They're there to make sure that when you're ready to start, you'll have all the information you need at your fingertips.

Hello, When I saw the length of the video, I almost passed you by. Man am I glad I didn't! I watched it all the way through and it changed my life. I was on my way to South Dakota to buy a Shapeoko 4 Pro. You changed my mind and I will order this machine along with all the add ons. I will also order your bit set as well and am very excited to receive it! I am so glad I saw your TH-cam video and I am looking forward to watching all the rest of your videos as well!!! I have been researching CNC machines for about 3 weeks and just happened upon your video and am so glad I did. You did a remarkable job in making the video and the information you provided was overwhelming. Garrett. Thanks for this video. This is the first one I cam across that is yours. I've watched about a half million videos already of other running their stuff, seeing what works for them, seeing what works and fails, all that good stuff. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on an almost $6K CNC that is notorious for having absolutely shitty customer service. (I'm sure you know exactly who that is). 😏
Now, because of you, and your "Donald Sutherland style" voice. Now I'm going to just down yet another wormhole with this brand Longmill, whom I've not yet heard of until now.
Expect a comment in every video from me from now on. You have a follower till the end. Subbed immediately.

Sir, you have just saved me a lot of hard earned money on buying something I would curse till the end of my days.
I am already into 3D modeling and printing on a hobby level. I went that road to satisfy needs of my primary hobby, that is "model making". Got tired of searching and buying customised elemens, so I decided to print them on my own. Moving forward started feeling the need of parts that can't be made by additive methods. That brought me to researching CNC routers. Thanks to your video (I watched it like it was Star Wars movie) I know what I need and what I want.
Buddy I hope You and Longmill ship worldwide because I am sure I will at some point become your customer.
    Greetings from Poland.

I love my Longmill Mk2 3030. It is my 3rd cnc...I owned one of those small3018 styles and a FoxAlien 4040xe. The long Longmill is the largest one I have own, and by far and away the best. I fail to understand how all these reviews on the MK2 and Longmill in general are so great. I got mine three months ago, and have not been able to use it hardly at all!!! One problem after another keeps popping up. The latest is the auto probe does not probe correctly. They are supposed to be looking at my video to try to determine why. It has slammed the bit into the floor of the block several times and scarred it up pretty bad. So many other problems I won't even go into them. I recommend everyone who I talk to that wants a CNC to stay away from these machines!!!!

Excellent Video!! Best one I've found so far that explains what to look for in a CNC router. I'll be retiring in about a year, and have been looking for something to do when that day comes. I do have some ideas of things to make with a router, and will be looking forward to trying things. As you state, the video gives me the confidence to move forward, with clear explanations of the why's and wherefors of router design, so I feel much more comfortable about making a decision of what to buy (leaning strongly towards LongMill, especially at the price point you mentioned!) Two other things I'm interested in learning about is how to build the bench that's needed for the router, and about Routers vs. spindles - I'm guessing you have other videos about these, which I'll be checking for. As you say, and has been said by others - Just Do It!!

I'm thinking about buying CNC machine. I have a couple of questions. I watched a longmill 48 x30 assembly video. I noticed that they put one sensor at the top on the z axis and that I understand. But why isn't there two stop sensors. One at each end, and the same on the Y axis. Maybe I was sleeping through that part of the video. Watching your video I think you have sold me on the long mill 30 x 30. thank you. You are very informative.

Linda, most machines do but the limit switches for this machine are for "homing" your CNC. Other machines use these limit switches to prevent your machine from running into itself! Different designs depending upon your machine type.

When I went looking for my machine, I went online and began to gather information. It was quite confusing with it being difficult to impossible to figure out what you were getting. I didn't want to build something and get free software I can download from somewhere, then get something else that doesn't cost much and works pretty well, but I may need to do this, that and the other thing to get it to work properly. I ruled those out. I didn't want to get something from China for numerous reasons.
I began looking at what seemed to be fairly well known brands. I figured for my needs, I would need at least a 24 X 36 work envelope. I found something that looked pretty good. I did a lot of research on it. There seemed to be some issues where tech support was MIA. Some people had complaints. One person I was chatting with had a problem where his parameters got erased. He reached out to the company but they could not help him. You would think they would have a boot disk included or available if an internal battery went dead and those parameters were lost. There was considerable speculation where many felt it was a Chinese machine rebranded.
Then I came upon a competing brand where they addressed and corrected the short comings of the aforementioned machine. It looked good. I was leaning towards that. People who used it liked it. Then when I researched further, there was a lot of additional items I would have to purchase to make it work. There was lots of interesting and good choices, but it added to the price considerably. I paused, based on that. I wanted something well known and widely used. I wanted plug and play and I had a price point I didn't want to exceed.
I also wanted something that came with it's own frame work. I thought a machine where the table you mounted the machine on was the machine base seemed inaccurate, even with facing a spoil board between the rails. It just was not going to be flat. And belt drives were out. Maybe my reluctance with a table mounted machine was from many years in CNC Manufacturing where gantry mills came with a base that was mounted to and leveled on a foundation. Many of them were driven by one lead screw on all their axes. So multiple drive motors and screws were not important to me.
I decided on the Shark HD4 extended. It came within my price range, seemed to come with everything I needed, delivery was free and fast. I liked there was forums where you could learn about the machine and what people thought of it, and it was sold in a lot of retail establishments, although none near me. I would have liked to see it working. It's been pretty good so far. Not dissatisfied at all.
Doing it all over again, would I have bought the same machine? Probably. But seeing videos from you and others on the Longmill and other similar table top designs, I would surely give that design consideration. Price wise, feature wise and price wise they seems hard to beat.
PS - Thank god and god bless Danny Thomas and St. Jude's. There has to be a special place in heaven for him. The same for his daughter Marlo who has carried on the legacy.

Educational, entertaining and just a great watch. Thanks Garrett! You list all your experience in the beginning of the video, but you forgot to mention that you are a great storyteller! Almost two hours long, but didn't get bored once! ;)
Only "negative" I would say is that you are a bit harsh when you tell who this this video is for, or not for.... I came looking for hints, tips and insight about stepper motor drivers, yet came out wanting a Longmill MK2.... I don't know if that is good or bad... ;) Bad for me and my no-budget, "scrap material" DIY build, but maybe a greater good for my goal of making/offering/selling Soap Box Car KITs..... Its a more of a hobby at the moment, more than a business, but this video (and others of yours) might help me through to the next level!!
Again: Great video, and love your "presenting style"! Hope it's authentic and not only for commercial gain... ;)
Best regards from another continent, Paul
Ps. Also loved that you stood on the actual gantry of that thing! When I understood that you were going to stand on it I first assumed you would stand on the x-rails, and surely on the parts where they are supported directly underneath... But I was mistaking: You went for the gantry! And while running the machine!! Bravo!

Olaffer, I'm glad you enjoyed the video brother! Wow, thanks for all the kind words, I'm humbled! It's a great piece of equipment and hopefully you'll be able to give it a shot one day for yourself. Your soap box car kits sound awesome and at the end of the day, it's all about being able to create the projects you imagine. Wether or not you end up with a longmill in your workshop, be sure to send me over pictures of your kits, I'd love to see them! Keep up the good work my friend!

Thanks Garrett - great instructional video for a beginner. My project is to advise my Men's Shed on the most suitable CNC machine to add to our existing desktop unit for bigger projects. Unfortunately, Longmill don't export to Australia! So I will use your advice to try and navigate my way through what's available here. Cheers. Ron

Hey Ron, you're so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! I know it stinks they aren't able to get the longmill over to your neck of the woods in Australia, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll find a similar machine available there! Cheers brother!

Hi Garrett. Thanks for the information.I took a risk with a Chinese 6040 as this is the size I wanted. This is a generic term and they vary considerably. The gantry on some is pretty flimsy but the one I got is pretty solid and I have not had any issues. The controller it comes with works but it is not very good. It only works with Mark 3 or DrufelCNC Post processor. I have replaced the controller. The spindle is a E11 1500 watt which works OK but was not grounded. I have just received a better quality replacement spindle. I will be using my CNC for artwork, starting with 3 and 4 axis and then indexed 5 axis(3 + 2). If I can not get the level of detail I need the then in 12 months or so I will look at a mini 5 axis system. These start at USD$5000.

Peter, you're so welcome for the info! I'm sorry you've run into some difficulty with your 6040 but hopefully everything will be sorted with your repairs and upgrades my friend! Yikes, those 5 axis systems can get pretty pricey! Keep up the good work brother!

I have a 32x48 now but would love to know what you were suggesting in the industrial sizes. I would love to be able to throw 4x8 sheets on one day. Also love the idea of having a vacuum hold down.
