Sulastic vs Stock Shackle 2019 3500HD

  • Improve your truck's ride. In this video I show the difference between how a stock shackle and the upgraded sulastic shackle handle going down the road. This was a noticeable improvement to my ride quality, I think it is a good way to take the annoying bumpiness out of your heavy duty truck. The instructions Sulastic provided were really thorough and it all went very smoothly, but do be aware that you need some above average tools for this job: floor jack, jack stands, die grinder, and then some larger sized sockets and wrenches. An impact made it faster too.

    I put a set of these on my 2015 F250. They did improve the ride.... for a while. After just over 2 years, the rubber flex part separated from the steel part and they were then just sitting in the bottomed out, useless position.. until you hit a bump, then due to the slop, the rear end would bounce up and then back down to the collapsed position. Sulastic replaced them under warranty (only 3 year on rubber part). When I got the replacements I just sold them rather than go thru the trouble in re-installing them. Good idea, does make for a slightly better ride, just doesn't last... and for the price they should last much longer and/or lifetime warranty.

      You have posted this same paragraph on every Sulastic video. We get your point. You either get a good batch or a bad one. I have had mine installed on my F250 with a 7.3L diesel. No problems for 6 years now. And if I had a problem the ride is so much better I would buy another set. $380 or a whiny wife. I’ll take the $380 every day.

    There used to be a bump on the freeway right by my house that would always bounce me up into my seat belt. After installing the sulastic shackles, it didn't eliminate the bump I felt, but I no longer locked out the seat belt anymore, which made it worth it to me.

    I bought these and Wow, what an impressive improvement. Companies like GM should buy their patent or incorporate them as they will sell more HDs in the process. Objectively, they feel like 50-70% smoother rear suspension smoothness. Worth the money and I’m more excited to ride my 2020 Chevy 2500 more than ever; I love my 6.6L gas engine as well, doing just great for my needs. The mechanic I hired did not have to notch out the underside of the Chevy box as found in some videos. He saved time and box damage by simply cutting those bolts and replaced them with new ones and faced the head of the bolt the opposite way; easier to remove if ever needed. Duh, brilliant! I’d say these are one of the best things one could invest in for an HD, period. Superior to Air Bags here in the winter (easily reaches -20 to -45C for days at-a-time here during Alberta winters) as bags can stop functioning at those temps.

    I just replaced all 4 shocks on my 2010 F250. Did the front first and the truck was much improved in ride and smoothness because my front shocks were toasts. The rear shocks still worked, but I decided to go ahead and replace them with the same brand as the new front ones (the yellow Monroe gas magnums). Big mistake. Now the truck is riding much rougher in the rear. I'm on the fence. Do I spend $500 on Sulastic shackles or dig the old rear shocks out of the garbage.

    • @DDTruckDriver
      @DDTruckDriver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't changed my shocks to a different style yet so I can't say, but if I was you. It is pretty easy to change shocks. So change your shocks to see what it does, you can consider this next if that doesn't help. But as I mentioned in the video. These shackles aren't for taking out small vibration, they are for removing the jolt when you go over bumps. So if you are working with a minor vibration I don't think the sulastics will help, but if it is on big bumps hitting you in your rear end then it will help

    • @edjackson4389
      @edjackson4389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DDTruckDriver No minor vibrations, that's actually what shocks are really good at. It's the big bumps and jolts that average shocks suck at. Honestly I've ran into this in the past with pretty much every truck I've owned, so I'm thinking Sulastics might be a good option for me. I tried the highly recommended Bilstein 5100s on my last truck and it was the same story, I loved them in the front, but they were just too stiff in the rear when unloaded. In my opinion the OEM shocks that most trucks come with give the best of both worlds with rear leaf springs, but maybe the Sulastics combined with these stiiffer Gas Magnums will be the magic combo

    • @DDTruckDriver
      @DDTruckDriver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't tow a lot and I didn't tow with this truck hardly at all before installing these. However, once you get enough weight on the truck the sulastic shackles will just max out. At which point they just act like a stock shackle so it would not affect towing.
      One nice benefit though is the shackle bushing dampens movement in both directions. So in theory, that shackle actually can soften the trailer bouncing up AND down. I can't say I notice that because I haven't towed much. But last month took a 22' trailer up the mountains on a 300 mile drive and it felt great so that much I do know.

From our perspective, if you compare what these look like fully extended to what the stock shackle looks like it makes sense that it doesn't change anything. When they get fully engaged and and pulled all the way open they are just a piece of metal hanging on by 2 bolts on each end just like the stock shackle.
