I think your reduction on the front end is the camshaft which I think is two to one on the crank. I dumped an engine like this a while back or you could have had the bits. I will have a scout round for the deco levers. Cheers. AH just noticed this was two years ago.
Greetings from Texas I have a few of the ST lister engines which are extremely rare. one specimen an ST1 attached to a pressure washer was governed to 950rpms for 10hp which is amazing for run time we figured the engine burned about a thimble of diesel for every hour under load the others I have are going to be for generator service.
Great video Adam, we enjoyed every part and when she coughed into life that was brilliant. Keep them coming, we always look forward to the next one. Thanks Adam.
No problem Norman. I won't be changing how I do things. You folks seem to like the "warts and all" approache. Got an interesting little engine coming up soon.
Norfolk man. Could you do me a favor and tell me what starter drive gear you have. 10,11,12 teeth? I have a similar engine with no starter and no spacer. I also need the thickness of the spacer if you don’t mind. I cannot find parts here in the US for this thing. So i have to make do with what i can get. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Good videos! Thanks for sharing :) Starting... those engines and the older and smaller SR series usually have a raised hand start which runs off the flywheel. The camshaft on the other end which you were trying to start from runs at half the speed. Also it looks like you don't have the fuel return piped up, there's a hole in the top of the tank which is fitted with a gromit which is where the return goes. With the price of fuel at the mo it's worth getting this rigged up. Also doesn't make a mess of the carpet 😀
I would love to come across some of these engines here in the states. We are mostly gasoline engines and diesels are rare or still in use and just not available in the junk piles yet. IDK?
loved this vid new it would start bit of a tip if the decompression levers are broken open the top can you can see the decompression levers going on to the valve spring
I've seen cowboy mechanics and cowboy mechanics that didn't know what they were doing and now I have seen Norfolk Caveman. You never even put the engine into cold start to get her going! Yes, I ran an ST2 as a beach winch engine for recovering boats for 10 years!
i have an st engine out of a fishing boat still got the boat gearbox on it will be play with getting it running soon as i get fuel filter oil filter and air filter it has the frying pan shape air filter and it needs renewing as the sea air has left it a tad fragile who do you get your spares from as no one in my area and will have to go online to shop love watching some of your classic get um running vids i retire soon so will have time to play got an old villers in the shed plus a 1950.s briggs for starters keep doing what you do best :-)
you got some good projects to go at there.. I get all my parts from Lister part. The guy is called Mike and he is really helpfull and won't try to sell you stuff you don't need. Best calling him tho as not many parts listed on the Web site. 01214 480722. Give him a call and tell him Adam from TH-cam sent ya..
I was watching you with those decompressor levers, and as soon as it started firing you pulled them upright to the decompress position. With electric starting you should not need to use them as they are for hand start only. The run position is with them down the star upright and with the two cylinders there should be a link between them. The hand start is very often off the cam shaft There are two positions for the shaft opposite end from the flywheel straight off the crank and off the cam shaft which is half engine speed, you can shift them over as the shaft extension fits both the crank and the cam all you need is a new bearing and seal if you are careful with extraction of the original you can get away neither I have swopped them over on many occasions with both lister and petter.
What a wonderful engine she looks absolutely amazing I think you may have put the starter motor studs in the wrong way round because one thread is longer than the other. Great vid as always ManCave 👍
Yeah she is a nice old lump. Them studs got 2 different threads on them mate. so only one end screws into the block. it's very strange indeed. But she seems to run a treat. am well happy with it.
its been a long long time since i hadI have te same lister on my dumper and to be honest Im after the tech settings espesially torque wrench settings a cantilever tool box I remember drasgging it to the airport flying to start a truck in east germany as was . point of fact
Well done, mate. in the cold they are a bit hard to turn over by hand. On my Auto truck I aint have any starter motor. I have to turn the gearbox with it while cranking up so that will me it more harder. Have you saw That video showing the lister LD2 auto truck around, ? One think I noticed on yours its still a but lazy to start. make sure you have the rack on fully throttle when starting.
Aren't the threads on the studs 5/16 inch UNF and that bolt you got an M8 (feels like it'll start but goes stiff like threads are gummed up), so because the studs are too long wouldn't some 5/16" X 1,1/2" UNF bolts with spring washers finish your starter motor installation? Also the starter motor adapter flange isn't uncommon (could be factory (special order) or could be aftermarket (cross reference)), was this engine attached to a pump or generator as the high idle speed is common for them sorts of operation.
Well I took the stud up the local nut and bolt company and they sorted them all out.. The tiny bolt for the control box made them scratch there head. Turns out they were BA thread.
@@NorfolkMancave Thank you so much, do you know what the round screw caps are for at the top of the engine ‘3 of them’? They look like oil fill points but my lister as a round screw cap oil fill point near the bottom of the engine
Great job. That engine runs really sweet when you got the idle turned down. Is it easy to get parts from Lister? It would be great to get the decompression lever ....it would save you a lot of hassle wondering which way to push them lol. Keep up the great work and get a few gallons of the red stuff. That white diesel is getting very expensive lol
You're my new hero, man. Love your work. Thank you for documenting all this for us.

I love it when an old engine fires up, nice job! We've got an SR2 and genset buried in the back of the shed, must get her going one day...
I like watching your videos I've learned alot about old engines and engines that I didn't even know existed

Thanks for watching. Yeah I like this old engine. 😄
Great filming as always ! Yep it's going well ! as with starters always check rotation , you did , can't wait for next Episode !
Ow yes. Made sure starter was the right one. ✅
I’m amazed you saved her. What a beauty
Well thanks, happy new year.
Runs a treat :) great stuff.
Ow she is a great sounding engine. I love it.. 😉
yeah runs a treat.
Great video thanks for sharing.
A well deserved result. Keep them a coming. Said it before. Long video's not a problem for me. See you in the next one 👍👍
No problem Norman. I won't be changing how I do things. You folks seem to like the "warts and all" approache. Got an interesting little engine coming up soon.
THANK YOU! 22:20 helped me get my engine started again :)
Wow!!!
thank you very much!!
I had no idea I need to take that cover off to bleed those things
I guess I owe you a beer token now🍺
This person is to much for me, I've worked with the World and his Wife and I dobt think in reality this bloke is in reality is my cup of tea
So just move on, commentary is superfluous.

Nowt wrong with that old girl she sounds sweet , that big old beast of a starter kicking in well done 👍.
That's one heck of a starter motor mate. I think with a better battery it would spin it over better.

Same as the gardner plod on for ever lovely engine

Brilliant little engine she runs a lovely
Yeah once bleed up she runs nice. 😃

it helps. and don't think it hurts just the once. it when they need every time it's a problem. 😃
Good work mate, she sound great
yeah I'm happy with it. sounds great.
@@NorfolkMancave yep, I like it too. I think I’d prefer the lister d or cs though, will you do anymore videos of you lister d or cs?

Great work on the ST2, mine still has two stuck pistons in it.

That was well worth the wait , now let's see how low she will go on the rpm's 👍👍🇺🇸
I did dile her down a bit.. Not sure how slow she will go.
I have the exact same steel toolbox as yours a Halfords one i bought in 85 if i remember correctly. Lol😅

That Priam chassis good for carting the heavy toolbox around ,nice engine mancave.
Found that pram chassis thrown away beside a commercial bin. Though "That's way to handy about the yard" lol.. in the car he went. Lol

Lol.. get one bought mate. Great engines.
Love this channel ❤
Thank you very much John. keep watching. plenty more like it to come.
Great video we are currently trying to put a electronic starter on ours! Where did you get the spacer ring from?
The old boy who had the starter also had the spacer ring.
Great video 👍. You, like I, could use a Manx to do your Camera work.
Good to watch a guy with dirty fingernails. Getting on with it. Old school. Mechanic
Hi love waching your videos I'm only 13 but I love engines
Well thanks for watching Luke.. Hope you enjoy them and maybe learn a bit from them.
@@NorfolkMancave yes I think I think you have once before commted on 1 of my posts on Facebook group to do with my lister b
It's alive!
It is indeed.
Happy days!
Hi what oil do you use in this lister, just about to do a oil change on a st3, Thanks 👍
I just use a 15 40 mineral oil or a fixed 30 grade. I would say minimal oil tho.
@@NorfolkMancave Thank you so much, do you know what the round screw caps are for at the top of the engine ‘3 of them’? They look like oil fill points but my lister as a round screw cap oil fill point near the bottom of the engine
Runs great mate can't beat a lister👍🏻
ow yes. runs fantastic Rick. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet.
Would be good inboard engine for a boat or a generator
Idling destroyed a lot of those engines because the oil pressure drops too low so a fast idle is better.
Great job. That engine runs really sweet when you got the idle turned down.

Yeah most parts are easy to get. Not sure about them decompresdor levers tho. I will have to call Listerpart tmw and speak to him.
Well done mate, what are the planes for it ?
Well it's a powerfull engine so I might put it on my big compressor. Nor sure its really a rally peice. Might be a bit noisy. 🤔
You need to get ya self a narrowboat to put it in,
I am addicted to Listers , sad ol boy I am 😁
Nothing Sad about that mate. I like old Listers aswell.
Guilty here as well.
You have a oil port plug missing did you notice?
No I didn't notice mate. Were about is it please? I will take a look.
@@NorfolkMancave around 40:19
It needs it as it will suck in dirty air instead of going through the filter, you should be able to find one.
ow I see what you mean now. the oil primer plug. yes 1 is missing.
Would you sell it?
Hi adam is that a Norman in the back ground
No it's a Enfield Diesel. Quite rare I belive.

Going again!
yay
Good ole Geoffrey he a rumun boi.

she dous run nice
Mate: to install stud use double nuts....FYI
yeah I should have done really. Will do that next time. 😀
I really wanted to watch this but the camera work leaves something to be desired. Either mount it on a tripod or get a stabilizer. Made me dizzy.
Wrong length studs Norfolk boy
Yeah they were way to long. She was a typical farm used engine. Totally worn out tho.
What do you mean will it run lister engines always run ,the best engine ever made and still made today
Lol.. ow yes. But this one was very very tired. She had done some work. She's gone to a good home now tho we're her parts are saving others.
