- I found that to buy a roof deck for your van to be too expensive so I built my own budget roof deck for van life.

You did an amazing job Shaun! You saved yourself a lot of money and worth the effort doing it yourself. I was thinking how you going to varnish and that you should varnish first but glad you got it sorted in the end. Bet you are going to get lots of use out of it however I wouldn’t sleep on it just incase you roll off in the night 😊
I would have to tie myself down to sleep on it but I’m sure I’ll work that out when I do it 😂

I've arrived a bit late and I'm catching up on your great content ...
If you had followed your dad's advice and varnished the wood first, you wouldn't have varnished the screw holes ... now they have better protection than the 'easy' option of varnishing first!
Of course after the cross beams and the 2 edge boards, you could have drilled (and counter sunk) holes in the rest of the boards based off the holes in the edge boards, then varnished each board on the ground before assembling it on the roof ... though I'd have to scribble numbers on a scrap of paper, measure several times and probably still calculate the number of boards wrongly!
Does the deck add much wind noise?
Have you dropped anything through the gap yet? I was wondering if a sheet of fabric under the boards would catch anything that fell ... but that made me think of wind noise, so might be a rubbish idea ...
I just found you tonight and watching several of your videos and knowing that you like the water, it would have been really cool for you to make the deck in the shape of a surf board. Also, thinking logically, like the Woman that I am, next time put your tools in a container so they don't fall in the gaps. Lol
I enjoyed that video very informative and sad to say Dad does know most things lol 😂

Looks great! I am considering doing something similar - but frankly wondering if it is worth the cost and effort to be able to sit / hang out 6 feet off the ground on the roof. What has your experience been? Worth it? Meh? Also - appreciate you letting us know your mistakes so others can avoid them. Nice video!

Good job Shaun. Yes, I would have varnished the wood on the ground and before installation. Good lesson for you though. Now you can arrange to put an umbrella hitch on the roof and sit in the shade while watching the ocean waves.

Hi. Does your roof deck make you too high for barriers?? Ii keep my stealth van under 2 metres. Had higher vans. A pain for barriers... I have and still do stealth camp. UK Europe and further afield. Love it..
So far I’ve been ok with barriers

That was a great idea. And well done. You are really handy 👍🏻😊 Some friends of mine actually once painted each plank belonging to the outside of their new house, indoor in the basement before they nailed them to the house 😀
I bet that took them ages to complete.
@@LoveSundays Took some time, but it rained all summer, so it was better to paint the planks somewhere dry while the the craftsmen finished building the house 😂

Nice Shaun, what about fine wire mesh under the planks to stop stuff falling through? If you paint it black with that Hammerite it'll disappear too!

Yes I was thinking about putting a ladder up there to make it look more like a builders van and I would help he get up there too.
Nice wish I'd thought of this mine cost well over £500, I use it for star gazing mainly and transporting things, mine has a deck hatch you can climb out of to get onto the roof.

Looks great! A camping chair up top and a nice cup of coffee (I think you Brits prefer "cuppa"?) in the morning, or a drink at night. A great view, to boot!

We love your video's especially the sea dives and beautiful footage. Although we do find that when you are speaking normally to the camera, we have to turn our volume up to 50 just to hear you talking. Is there any chance you can get a mic that attaches to your top. P.s. We love Cornwall. ❤ . X
That happens a lot with TH-cam on TV it’s got something to do with the setting. I can easily turn up my speech volume when I’m editing but it would make the video unwatchable on every other device because the music would come over too loud.

I looked at the st ives stealth camp then this one. We are just over the valley on the terrace. There was a fire down the lane there tonight.
Really a fire? Down on the nature reserve?
