Agreed , I think he is the only reviewer where if he doesn’t like a game he will state it plainly. None of the beating around the bush , being afraid of harsh criticism because they may offend the newest ks game. I swear a great majority of board game TH-camrs seem like they “are walking on eggshells” when it comes to reviewing a game, especially if it is game with all the usual ks stuff. More and more I use board game TH-cam more for purely gameplay and how to play purposes as opposed to getting a review.

I didn't even confront anyone, I just didn't think it was a problematic cover. That told me just how woke the BGG moderators are.

Being banned from two subreddits on 3D printing for asking "uncomfortable" questions myself while helping to solve others problems stupid me finally got two things: 1) ("offended") mob rules 2) administrators of these communities are interested only in growth: the more active members there are, the higher is the ad revenue.
the whole 'karma' mechanism makes it a bit of an echo chamber - don't say anything controversial or you'll get downvoted, and if you get downvoted your access to things might get limited (I wasn't able to post something on one reddit forum recently because my karma was not high enough...)

I see too many videos with reviewers who are afraid to say anything too negative for whatever reason. Giving an opinion that you don't like a game (or some aspect of it) can actually be very helpful. People just have to be smart enough to figure out if your negative opinion of a game might align with theirs.

When you cut through it all, this is someone giving their opinion who is likely actually buying games out of their own pocket and telling you what they think. 99.9% of the channels out there are sent tons of free crap and are incentivised to say nice things because it didn't come out of their own pocket and they want more free stuff. I don't agree with every review, but it is nice to hear a different perspective from all the big American content creators that have completely over produced, over the top approach to everything. This channel has saved me a bit of money as most channels tell you to buy every big shiny game they are promoting, rather than be honest about its faults.

When NPI reviewed Lords of Ragnarok and decided to take a potshot at crowdfunding in general, I remember how many redditors decided to attack anyone who has covered a crowdfunded boardgame. Even the folks who never previewed Lords of Ragnarok.
I’ve covered crowdfunded board games that have both been sent to me and paid for out of my own cash. They all get the same treatment. If publishers don’t want bad reviews then don’t make bad games.

i got a temp suspension from bgg for saying i disliked the changes being made by Nisei to Android Netrunner. an admin said i was being dismissive and that "being dismissive was against the rules". i argued with the admin that having an opposing view isnt dismissive, it's having another view, but they didn't care. some of the admins are militant social justice warriors who are so extreme, they go after anyone who dares to disagree. it's not all of them, but there's a couple of cunts for sure & all it takes is one. you got one of the best game channels out there.

People say that it's negative and all of that bollocks, but honestly this is one of the very few channels that I appreciate quite a lot. Not only it gives an honest opinion (which is subjective, of course), it also delivers it in a dry humor and very funny way. I don't remember last time I laughed so much on youtube, it's absolutely great. People who don't get humor or just straight up thick in the head probably won't get this. Keep it up, nothing but positive emotions and happiness comes out of these videos, there's an audience for this for sure, it's just harder to find, sadly.

I love how all these people talk about inclusivity, but they can't wrap their heads around that you come from a different culture that isn't all chipper cheery all the time.
I encountered many, many people on both BGG and boardgame subreddits who are very elitist and definitely NOT inclusive in any shape or form, so many of them not understanding satire and honest direct opinions of Mr. Bollocks here is not unexpected to me at all.
Of course the channel is divisive. What would you expect. But even as a boardgame player (well, ameritrash and crawlers mostly), I come here for the good laughter rather than for games' coverage. And that video is pure gold.

great video mate, it says the words on many peoples minds. i mostly dont bother with videos from the BGG channel as i find them pretty predictable with the usual fawning over the latest and "greatest" - i'd rather have a real opinion!. I've pretty much given up on the forum as i seem to be on the wrong side of the water for anyone to show any interest in anything i say or ask. ( i dont think ive ever had a response on there ) The videos you make are fine, you are not the only youtuber who edits the vids instead of wasting time rerecording them, which is fine with me - im after real info about board games, not an oscar nominated movie edit. keep up the good work, representing real people in a real way.

For what it's worth, they weren't talking about you when they said 'grognard neckbeard'. They were talking about the kinds of people who think it's funny to use the term "sports ball" and who think people who like sports are anathema to the boardgaming hobby just because they've never had a friend who could jog for 15 seconds without sweating grease and pulling out an asthma inhaler, since those people tend to get very antsy about "people like you" showing up in the hobby.
Not only does everybody have an opinion about a channel they admit they don't watch or care about, but better yet, theirs is not an opinion, it's the absolute truth!
I find the binary good/bad mindset so prevalent in the US. I don't agree with all you say, indeed far from it, but I do appreciate the insight into board games (and agree that there's far more nuance than the simplistic opinions expressed in the reddits you quoted). The thought of banning someone because we disagree with their opinions is for me a dangerous path to go down. True there are situations where it can go too far and even I'd support censoring, but the degree to which that happens on BGG is ludicrous. Fine if they'd chosen to shut down a discussion with a final statement of their position, but it's a laughable pretence at holding a discussion, when the majority of comments are removed, and some of the posters of those comments (and indeed sometimes people that simply *liked* them) are banned from the site. The net result sadly drives people away from the behaviours of mutual respect, when treated that way. Dialogue is the right way, even though it takes more effort to manage and moderate (moderation being far wider than deletions and banning, which should be an absolute last resort & rarity on a well-moderated site).
This affirms my opinion that reading comments on Reddit is a free test of your sanity. Second if I have to google your insult, it sucks. "Edge lord" indeed. Your channel is great. Keep it up, for those of us who have been playing since the 70s.
Part of the reason I won't go to board game groups (real life meet ups) is these people who get on their moral ivory throne and start saying things are 'problematic' when really they are not, or moan about tropes, I really don't want to meet these kinds of people in real life, it won't end well, I'd go down as well as a turd in a space suit.
That's a real shame. I've never encountered that in real-life gaming (in the UK). Conversely it's then easy to have some sensitivity, when you see a subject is uncomfortable for someone... "no problems, we'll play something else". It doesn't need to be the aggressive/cobative socio-political activism that has invaded our hobby online / in the US.
@@iansutton7416 Sadly its come to that, being someone brought up in the 70/80's like BGB, I really have no time for people being overly sensitive, and lets be honest these days its really cranked up a few notches, like getting upset about Caucasian cavemen, or historical subjects like slavery and piracy, sometimes I do wonder if these people actually take themselves seriously or just looking for the likes and looking like social white knights. There's a game about Romans in Britannia, and some people were looking at the moral aspects of it, and I just couldn't work out why it would bother people so much

In our largish group (Mondays 10-15 people, tuesdays 25-35 people and a changing cast each week), there's no lecturing or gate-keeping of what is played. If anyone finds a game troubling, there are other games to choose from and no-one would be forced into playing something they didn't want to. In reality such cases are always about the type of game (e.g. avoiding social deduction, or fluxx/munchkin, or dexterity). As for subjects like colonialism, they are rather infrequent and anyone who brings such a game seems to have the common sense to be open about it. Most of the time (e.g. Maracaibo) the theme is so loose that it really is a stretch to find issue (though I acknowledge that some online activists want to make that connection). For myself, my partner is Maori, so I've been happy to agree not to buy games involving / about colonialism. Conversely she's got no issue with me playing them when I'm out gaming. Such compromise is sensible and practical, but not appreciated by activists on either side of the debate who seek out confrontations. Whether they see themselves as champions of free speech or diversity, their descent into extremes and trench warfare 'debate', is something I don't appreciate. Give me a nuanced discussion over shit-slinging any day!

To be honest I never really noticed the edits as I was to engrossed in his reviews 😂 just shows what kind of people infest BGG. I thought Rotten Tomatoes was bad. I enjoy his content and it keeps me entertained with down to earth reviews saying what other do not say about a game. Some people cannot handle the truth 😂.

i got a temp suspension from bgg for saying i disliked the changes being made by Nisei to Android Netrunner. an admin said i was being dismissive and that "being dismissive was against the rules". i argued with the admin that having an opposing view isnt dismissive, it's having another view, but they didn't care. some of the admins are militant social justice warriors who are so extreme, they go after anyone who dares to disagree. it's not all of them, but there's a couple of cunts for sure & all it takes is one. you got one of the best game channels out there.
I tried reading boardgame related subreddits but it’s a circlejerk. Even got downvoted to hell by having the gall to voice my opinion on Wingspan being a massive turd of a game.

People say that it's negative and all of that bollocks, but honestly this is one of the very few channels that I appreciate quite a lot. Not only it gives an honest opinion (which is subjective, of course), it also delivers it in a dry humor and very funny way. I don't remember last time I laughed so much on youtube, it's absolutely great. People who don't get humor or just straight up thick in the head probably won't get this. Keep it up, nothing but positive emotions and happiness comes out of these videos, there's an audience for this for sure, it's just harder to find, sadly.

i mostly dont bother with videos from the BGG channel as i find them pretty predictable with the usual fawning over the latest and "greatest" - i'd rather have a real opinion!. I've pretty much given up on the forum as i seem to be on the wrong side of the water for anyone to show any interest in anything i say or ask. ( i dont think ive ever had a response on there )

For what it's worth, they weren't talking about you when they said 'grognard neckbeard'. They were talking about the kinds of people who think it's funny to use the term "sports ball" and who think people who like sports are anathema to the boardgaming hobby just because they've never had a friend who could jog for 15 seconds without sweating grease and pulling out an asthma inhaler, since those people tend to get very antsy about "people like you" showing up in the hobby.

Not only does everybody have an opinion about a channel they admit they don't watch or care about, but better yet, theirs is not an opinion, it's the absolute truth!
I find the binary good/bad mindset so prevalent in the US. I don't agree with all you say, indeed far from it, but I do appreciate the insight into board games (and agree that there's far more nuance than the simplistic opinions expressed in the reddits you quoted).
The thought of banning someone because we disagree with their opinions is for me a dangerous path to go down. True there are situations where it can go too far and even I'd support censoring, but the degree to which that happens on BGG is ludicrous. Fine if they'd chosen to shut down a discussion with a final statement of their position, but it's a laughable pretence at holding a discussion, when the majority of comments are removed, and some of the posters of those comments (and indeed sometimes people that simply *liked* them) are banned from the site. The net result sadly drives people away from the behaviours of mutual respect, when treated that way. Dialogue is the right way, even though it takes more effort to manage and moderate (moderation being far wider than deletions and banning, which should be an absolute last resort & rarity on a well-moderated site).
This affirms my opinion that reading comments on Reddit is a free test of your sanity. Second if I have to google your insult, it sucks. "Edge lord" indeed. Your channel is great. Keep it up, for those of us who have been playing since the 70s.

Part of the reason I won't go to board game groups (real life meet ups) is these people who get on their moral ivory throne and start saying things are 'problematic' when really they are not, or moan about tropes, I really don't want to meet these kinds of people in real life, it won't end well, I'd go down as well as a turd in a space suit.
That's a real shame. I've never encountered that in real-life gaming (in the UK). Conversely it's then easy to have some sensitivity, when you see a subject is uncomfortable for someone... "no problems, we'll play something else". It doesn't need to be the aggressive/cobative socio-political activism that has invaded our hobby online / in the US.
@@iansutton7416 Sadly its come to that, being someone brought up in the 70/80's like BGB, I really have no time for people being overly sensitive, and lets be honest these days its really cranked up a few notches, like getting upset about Caucasian cavemen, or historical subjects like slavery and piracy, sometimes I do wonder if these people actually take themselves seriously or just looking for the likes and looking like social white knights.
There's a game about Romans in Britannia, and some people were looking at the moral aspects of it, and I just couldn't work out why it would bother people so much
@@HarleyFirestorm It's a sad state of affairs if that's happening when boardgamers meet up to game. In our largish group (Mondays 10-15 people, tuesdays 25-35 people and a changing cast each week), there's no lecturing or gate-keeping of what is played. If anyone finds a game troubling, there are other games to choose from and no-one would be forced into playing something they didn't want to. In reality such cases are always about the type of game (e.g. avoiding social deduction, or fluxx/munchkin, or dexterity).
As for subjects like colonialism, they are rather infrequent and anyone who brings such a game seems to have the common sense to be open about it. Most of the time (e.g. Maracaibo) the theme is so loose that it really is a stretch to find issue (though I acknowledge that some online activists want to make that connection). For myself, my partner is Maori, so I've been happy to agree not to buy games involving / about colonialism. Conversely she's got no issue with me playing them when I'm out gaming. Such compromise is sensible and practical, but not appreciated by activists on either side of the debate who seek out confrontations. Whether they see themselves as champions of free speech or diversity, their descent into extremes and trench warfare 'debate', is something I don't appreciate. Give me a nuanced discussion over shit-slinging any day!

When my choices in board game media are 1) bought and paid for KS hype videos 2) hypocrites praising games about Viking Raids and Qin Shi Huangdi while making you feel like a piece of shit for playing a pirate or western themed game 3) people who get so many free games they complain about the packaging and the boxes their free games came in....the more and more I appreciate we have a channel like yours. As more and more organic board game channels stop making content and are replaced with 35 minute infommercials on a Gamefound Project, I am glad we can still turn to your channel for a no bullshit fearless take on modern gaming.
