I reckon you might like Architects of the West Kingdom. It's a fairly simple worker placement euro collecting resources to build buildings for points, but it has a lot more player interactivity, being able to capture your opponents workers and offload them to jail for cash. Your actions can move you up and down on a piety track which has benefits and restrictions for being closer to either end, a black market where you can get a leg up at the cost of suspicion, and a player-driven timer where the player/s with the most suspicion take negative point cards that can be turned positive. All in all a great little interactive game that supports up to 5 players in a reasonably snappy playtime.

The fact that El Grande is only 94 on the list tells you a lot.
The bane of top board games lists is the influence of the Cult of the New. The flash-in-the-pan rage of today, which is quickly forgotten and cast aside, can have staying power on favorite lists because most gamers don't go back and revisit/review games that they have had time to re-evaluate after they have had some time to get over their initial excitement and bandwagon fandom. ... and then there's the victims of the Sunk Cost Fallacy, inspired by KickStarter and other games that have demanded huge investments (and more investments, and more, and more, etc).

Most spot on opinion: El Grande. Stone cold classic, no disagreement whatsoever. The original art is absolutely better.
Most off the mark opinion: Android: Netrunner. Literally the best design of any game ever made.
Best game BGB hasn't played: Cthulhu: Death May Die. I like the Cthulhu theme even if it is absolutely overused. Really fun co-op dungeon crawler that isn't another fucking campaign. Bonkers bullshit, great modularity, excellent variety. It really makes me wish Eric Lang would put down his phone and just design games.

I really enjoy Paladins of the West Kingdom. It’s a fun worker placement game where you get different colored meeples to activate different actions on the board (all the actions require certain combinations of colors). It’s a very satisfying puzzle. You each have your own boards though, so there’s probably less interaction than I get the sense that you like in your games. I did not care for Architects by comparison. Paladins is the heavier of the two games.

Get Beyond the Sun. I have got rid of several games because they are on BGA and I don't need to play there and also have a physical copy. Beyond the Sun is the first game that I bought a physical copy as I liked it on BGA so much. Fields of Arle is the Rosenburg that I want to play, Nusfjord is the one that I can get to the table most easily. Mech Vs Minions was probably the most fun game for a group of 4 people to play through, but having completed the (10 scenario?) campaign once, I have never felt the need to play it again. Imperial Assault is my favourite dungeon crawler game, if you are into those, get it, if you are not, avoid.

For Caylus, maybe it falls between two stools - too much -ve interaction (mostly via the provost) for mainstream euro gamers, but the classic euro look might put off thematic gamers. I guess it shows how euro's didn't use to be the multiplayer solitaire style they can tend to be these days.
Architects of the West Kingdom has been a very useful game, as it plays fast, even at 6 players (with the artisans expansion). Fast playing 6 player games that are more thinky are so useful. Quite a messy rules teach, but turns play super fast. Clever in that the seemingly take that capturing of others workers, isn't a bad thing as it gets a route to get your workers back to play them again. Worth a try. Paladins the crunchier of the 3, but bizarrely it's easier to teach. A bit of a multiplayer solo, plus a crazily big table hog. I like it as well, but it's harder to find the time to get it played, even though it *feels* like it plays super fast (it does - it's just you get progressively more turns every round). If you're going to try one, I think Architects may suit you more. Both share an aspect of individual turns being very fast.
I like Robinson Crusoe, but find myself reaching for This War of Mine whenever the desire for self-punishment takes hold.
Cthulu DMD is surprisingly thinky, for what looks like a slab of plastic dice chucker. Worth a play as I think it might surprise as well, but I'd not recommend buying it, as it's daft how big the minis are, getting in the way / not even fitting on the board.

Though I do understand, if you don't like a couple of his heavier games, you probably won't like the rest.

Tainted Grail (the original at least, haven't played Kings of Ruin) is easily one of the worst board games I've ever played, I have no idea how it reached top 100.
One of the worst rulebooks out there, the story is mediocre, mechanics of the game are poorly thought out (supposed to be a survival game, it stops being one midway through), the balance is nonexistent, very janky decisions made regarding components (cards have descriptions on their back for some reason, though you aren't supposed to pick them up since other pieces might be on top of them, also why the hell is map made of thin cards), combat becomes boring and repetitive after 2-3 sessions, some things in story are pure RNG (you have to roll a die during some story moments, there is a way to mitigate worst possible outcomes though). The only positives this game has are the amount of content for the price and the miniatures are pretty good. That's it. This should be 90 from the bottom game, not from the top.

I really wanted to like Tainted Grail but ended up hating it for many of the reasons you listed. Also, those stupid Menhir models only serve to hold a little eight sided disk. They mostly just block your view of the board. Super annoying. I read through the story after giving up in frustration with the game, and found that to be rubbish as well. No idea why people think it’s a good story.

I agree. We put about 15 hours into Tainted Grail, because I was very excited to play it. But, the story wasn't engaging, and mechanically it's dog shit. It also feels like a solo game with the tacked on, half-assed multiplayer mechanisms.
I don't know how it's rated so highly and ranked so highly. I also don't know how they convinced anyone to buy the sequel.

I'm a little surprised that Raiders of the North Sea only just breaks into the top 100. I would have expected it to be higher given the fanfare that surounded the game when it appeared. The expansions were much needed to extend the player options at higher counts, and maybe that's behind its rather indifferent placement. Alternatively, it's just that the BGG top 100 is a rather strange selecton to me.

I get frustrated when the activists overstretch, in order to bring the 'battle' back into focus.
