As brilliant as always. I KNOW you helped me not only get the biggest role of my life…but nail it. Be willing to let the “actor” fail so the character’s needs are met.
I’m a writer I have a problem with writing so many characters and creating to much plot without characters performing in the plot. So I’ll write more characters and plot lol. I need to be these characters and listen to what the characters are saying more, so it can ground me into the scene and obstacles.
Thanks for reaching out! In our community we also have writers who work on their instruments to get completely free and instinctive in writing because of so much clarity they get after resetting their instruments. I recently just graduated from my college where I majored in Business, but did theatre on the side. I came in freshman year as a party extra in a play and left with my last role being Roxane in my college’s big semester production Fine Arts series of Cyrano de Bergerac (a play that has a unique heritage at my college). But my director in Cyrano literally micromanaged me to a pulp. It didn’t help that I didn’t realize I was suffering from severe burnout and depression during that time. When I tried to audition for a drama school after I graduated, I failed miserably. I just felt so blocked and so stilted, and so so TIRED. And I just didn’t have the energy and love for it any more. And that frightens me, I’m scared I’ll never get back my groove again. I miss it so bad. But I also, don’t want to go back to the overthinking/depressed/mentally unstable way I was going about creating my characters. Lol, not to be dramatic, but is there hope for someone like me? Is this common?
Hi Sleepless Dreamer! I'm sorry you had to go through that experience with your director and your audition. For what you're saying, it sounds like your instrument is not consistent right now and your motivation is gone. I understand that must be frustrating. Of course, there's hope and it's really common! In the work we do with actors, we help them move through their resistances, blocks and fears so that they can get completely instinctive and free and find the motivation again. Wonderful video. As an actor, even with all the work and the prep, it can sometimes still be difficult to silence the ego and not have it constantly chatting to you. Do you have any tips on freeing one’s instrument so that the actor’s inhibition can be reduced? is it simply a matter of preparing even more? prioritizing relaxation techniques?

Great video. I find that I have to change my voice either in tone or accent slightly to be the character otherwise I’m too aware of myself being me. Is that advisable? One teacher told me to stop changing my voice and just be me .
DUDE ... I'm literally reading a book that is describing almost word verbatim what you are going through It's called True and False by David Mamet If you read the book, take everything with a grain of salt Anyways, I'm gonna put a paragraph here: "Acting in my lifetime has grown steadily away from performance and toward what for want of a better term can only be called oral interpretation, which is to say a pageant like presentation in which actors present to the audience a prepared monologue complete with all the Funny Voices. And they call the Funny Voices emotional preparation. In life there is no emotional preparation for loss, grief, surprise, betrayal, discovery; and there is none onstage either. Forget the Funny Voices, pick up your cue, and speak out even though frightened."
Another quote "Here is what I have learned in a lifetime of play-writing: It doesn’t matter how you say the lines. What matters is what you mean. What comes from the heart goes to the heart. The rest is Funny Voices."
I understand. It seems like your instrument is not consistent right now and I understand that must be scary. We can help you get 100% free and instinctive. Please, send us an email to info@tobeornottoact.com and we'll send you a link to our free training where we explain how.
What if someone has ADHD and/or obsessive/compulsive tendencies as well as anxiety and has a hard time listening in general to people talk (in real life) without responding in their own head while the other person is talking? In other words I have a hard time listening to my partner in real life...I tend to try to make myself concentrate or listen but sometimes get so distracted, usually by the thoughts in my own head. Does that propose a real challenge in acting?
Sure, Shannon! In the work we do, we help actors (and non artists as well) move through those "distractions" and anxiety so that you can get completely free, present, in the moment and able to listen to your instrument first, and then to your partner.
