My late father was born in Borley Rectory in 1922, his parents were in service there until the second reverend Bull left. My grandparents were interviewed in the 70’s but never saw or heard anything. My grandmother returned to the church at around that time and the following day it was reported that items in the church, candles etc, were found on the ground

Thank you for this Chris. Borley (rightly or not) has been an interest of mine since the 1960's and I have visited the place on a couple of occasions. The first time was in the late 80's with my (late) Father and we enjoyed our time looking around the church (although in those days I had no idea where the Rectory would have been). The second time was with my partner who is sensitive to certain things and could not continue her walk along the church path. No smells or sounds, just a foreboding and an urge to get away quickly.

Very Informative and accurate. A lot of stuff these days isn't. I have a vast collection of material on Borley spanning 30+ years. I have books and material which is very rare, Including Vince O Neill's book which was never published. I live in Nova Scotia and recently visited Amherst, where the Foyster's were from. I need to re visit to find out more about them, as my visit was to the vets with our dog. It's about a 2 hr drive from where we live.. Vincent was another 'adoptee' of Marianne's and he went back with her. I have no idea if he's alive and I will look up parish records. I have loads of photos from our visit to Borley, mainly black and white which shows up 'anomalies' and 'back in the day' you were then allowed in the church. I have a letter from Peter Underwood. My visit was probably around 1986. If I were to sell my collection it's probably worth around 30,000 plus GBP. There are some bungalows which were built on Hall Drive in the 70's and the Nun allegedly walks through garage walls etc.

Another great watch my friend. I've been aware of, and indeed have watched many times, the BBC investigation evidence and it appears, on face value to be very active. I've heard that the villagers of Borley aren't overly keen on people / groups pitching up to investigate as some make a nuisance of themselves. This is a crying shame a major investigation is warranted. Thanks for the vid. I think that your group, you, Pat and Eddie would give a sympathetic and reasoned investigation.
Harry Price is a divisive character and a lot of his evidence has been questioned vigorously and the "press" intrusion didn't help for a truthful investigation.
All in all another winner from Haunted Earth and my mate Chris Halton. Well worth the watch folks....

Biggest amazement for me is the sheer quality of this superbly cognisant documentary made for TH-cam.
You could've made it about the Borley Rectory roof guttering and it still would've been enthralling.
And just too add: I think you're spot on with your summing up of Price. I appreciate at that period (at least in the earlier years) seances and the paranormal were quite accepted. Especially in the Victorian eras new found love for the sciences, and the catastrophe of WWI with so many young lives cut short with so many families never having the chance of goodbyes and the like. But these were for the general public.
You can't help but feel that Price considered himself a "scientist", but without any academic achievement and with the paranormal sciences realistically being at the periphery, Price was probably shunned by the community he was so desperate to be recognised with.
And as you're well aware in the medieval to renaissance era nobody even rode a wagon. They all went by horseback, coaches didn't exist, wagons were monstrous furniture removal things, Elizabeth I riding horseback on her interminable tours of the Realm would barely manage 10 miles a day. Basically what I'm saying is your assessment of a pack of headless coachmen with a pack of nuns on tour is exactly what you say: very much a Victorian invention.
Without TV and Radio it'd be either a night of exciting stories of ghostly apparitions or scrabble again.
Or you could pretend to be a ghost nun with a few of your 14 siblings...
Mysterious footsteps at night? With 14 kids all wandering around in the middle of the night trying to nick biscuits?

Very interesting take on the most famous ghost in Britain ; just as the Loch Ness monster was a early 20th C newspaper circulation boost - this corner of Essex and its legend interwove fact with fiction plus some fascinating character's and there is a perfect situation for a great story . I have had my fair share of experiences with ghosts in the past. It’s something that can never truly be explained. There isn’t always an explanation for everything. But it’s a very good documentary and the history is amazing. But your right, the church has been overlooked by the rectory.

I visited Borley church one evening in September, during the eighties. As we arrived, a cotton wall fog crept over the whole site from the direction of the field, behind the church. We made our way to the porch and sat down. Two of us with our backs to the house, and one opposite. The fog was so thick, that visibility outside the porch, was no more than five to six feet. As we sat there, after a while, a number of bats started to fly inside the porch, and then fly straight out again. This suddenly stopped, and then, after a while, there was the sound of birds screeching, becoming louder, as if they were approaching the porch. From behind us, in the direction of the house, in between the porch and the hedge, there was the sound of a human voice, letting out a loud roar, as if it had become frustrated with the noise of the birds! Sure enough, the screeching stopped. I've never ever heard or witnessed anything so frightening! Strangely enough, only two of us heard the noise, even though it pierced through the air! I remember my friend turning to me and saying: "what the fuck was that?" Because of the fog, we were too afraid to go out and investigate, and the atmosphere became very daunting and unpleasant! We stayed for around another hour, before returning to the car, which was parked by the gate. It's something I shall never forget.

Once he was buried near his remains, the household hauntings ceased. Strictly from memory here, hope I have my stories straight & haven't juxtaposed them by accident. My point, tho, was that this is the 1st instance I've heard of, altho there are prob more undiscovered or untold, of a woman's skull turning up bagged in a closet. Curious no one's providing answers to her identity. Once those involved have passed on, tracing her becomes harder, but not impossible. Perhaps if she starts raising a ruckus nightly, the prop owners shall be more motivated to at least lay her to rest properly, even if they fail at identifying her.

That’s an interesting question. Two observations: how were they certain that it was female, just from the skull? It’s not an exact science to sex the deceased purely from a skull. Secondly, the rectory was near a churchyard, which has had generations of bones buried there. However, the question remains why someone from the rectory, especially Christians who believe in the sanctity of burial in holy ground, would move it to a cupboard. Perhaps it was the Bull girls, to bolster their tales of a nun, a monk and a horse drawn carriage which, if memory serves me right, they took directly from a popular Harrison Ainsworth tale to give a more interesting history to what was then their modern home?

My father,at the moment,is (temporarily) living at a care home in an out of the way place (so remote, that Shakespeare wrote about it whenever he wanted to give the feeling of a backwater!).The care home is a massive vicarage! The Church, even now,is an incredibly wealthy concern,so vicars, even in quite remote areas, were able to have the most incredible houses, with staff, don't forget, built for them, and, their sometimes, huge families! My Dah (I've always called him that,I'm partly Welsh, but found out ages after that this is what what the Welsh call their fathers) can't get over the fact that the vicars lived in such luxury. If, an out of the way place, can have such a massive vicarage,no wonder Borley's was ginormous!
It always tickles me that my maternal grandfather was called Harry Price! He died ages before I was born, but, apparently,he was VERY chapel! No ghost-hunting,etc for him!,🤣🤭🤣Interesting documentary, thank you for posting.👍👍👍🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️🐊🐊🐊

Thanks, everyone. The Bull family were very wealthy. Especially paying for the upkeep of that large rectory, plus all those kids!

The place is haunted. Visited back in the 90s with friends, we walked along the field along the original rectory garden, at night, there was a big hedge that run parallel with the field. We all stopped, and heard footsteps on the other side. I jumped on my friend's shoulders to have a look over the other side. Nothing there. As we walked and stopped again it continued. It is a very haunted place.

I think that in your summing up you should have paid far more attention to the church. Unless the 70s experiences were fabricated, it seems to me that the interest and mystery lies there, not in the long-gone rectory and the dubious characters associated with it. You suggested that there's no possibility of going back to the church and reopening investigations there. Why?

because you can't go in the church anymore. Only if your a parishioner. I feel very sorry for the people of Borley who have had to put up with a lot of vandalism.

@@juliearch1 Back in the 1970s it got so bad that the Police were often called out to move people on who turned up in cars in large numbers late at night making a general nuisance of themselves and no doubt keeping the Villagers awake.

If you've read about Harry Price, he said many hauntings were genuine when they weren't, but elaborate hoaxes

Some interesting analysis in your video, although it seems that you have a predisposition to believe in the paranormal, so it's hard to know how open minded you are about Borley. Anyway, I have visited there a number of times, and enjoyed your film. Thank you!

There are ghosts, I saw the apparition of a Alsatian dog when I was 10 at school. I am now almost 58, and I have seen nothing else, but that dog was not only seen by me but also another person.

Perhaps not at Borley, but my family & I lived in a haunted house, we left him alone & he us, there was also a black cat, both were as solid as you or I. Not only we saw them, but visitors, even those who believed in nothing saw them & searched the house & garden for both. We lived in a remote 15th century blacksmith's & this man & cat had never left.

You don't know that, nobody knows that.Nobody knows 100% what happens after death( including you).
