Documentaries like this blow my mind. Not 50 years ago you would need to pay college tuition to find such quality work presented in such a scholarly fashion. 48:27 "Death is not the last thing, it is the least thing. It is but a cobweb we pass through as we journey from this life to the next." - some Druid, probably
Very Hindu. I think Druids were Hindus of Europe. In the vedas there is a mention of a people who went to west 20,000 years ago, called the sons of Danu. Celts believe they were the sons of a river god and called themselves Aryan. Hence Irish later on. It’s very fascinating to us Indians.
@@pitpat2928 sons of Dhanu. Later most names of rivers in Europe were called Danube or a derivative of the word dhanu. Thames derived from Sanskrit thamasa meaning black. Thames means black river. The connection is uncanny. Before Christianity most of Europe was sanathani( the eternal tradition of the cosmos).
@@pitpat2928 there was a war, battle of the ten kings, in the vedas. Many later kingdoms and civilisation are result of this war. There was a clan called the parshuva. Later they were known as the Persians. If you don’t believe me. Just check out Persian language. It’s 1:1.
What I really like about history and topics such as these, is that it puts later accounts of different events in perspective. The Romans, despite the barbarity within their culture, considered the druids and their rites to be an affront to their way of life, often exaggerating their so called "misdeeds" in writing. Such practices never really went away, and now we severely lack records about the Norse, or the Balts, Cathars, Gnostics, Manicheans, Aztec, Mayans, etc, and their traditions, as the dominant culture wrote very biasedly about them, centuries after their destruction. This led to the perverse belief that persists to this day about these forgotten cultures and ways of life being "savage and barbaric." So much history and culture, heritage, all lost to the passage of time...
I was fascinated by history when I was kid, but once I gained access to the unfiltered information of the internet I found much of what I would consider the history of my people, was actively destroyed by romans and early Christians. That so much of our culture was destroyed by invading vikings and english. I looked to learn of my people, I learned only to hate. To hate the missionary, the colonist, and though I know it is both wrong and irrational, I learned to hate the english, the romans, the vikings.
Whoever your "people" are, I am sure they were also guilty of conquering, waring, and enslaving, there just isn't much of a written record of it. Even small, primitive tribes fought and enslaved each other. It has been that way all throughout human history. You claim to hate those cultures, but I'm sure you enjoy all of the benefits they have provided to modern people.@@semorebutts2584

The difference in accounts of druidic human sacrifice might coincide with particularly tough periods. Often in other human sacrificing cultures you see a huge increase in killings during times of hardship such as famines or war. Even the Romans who abhorred human sacrifice resorted to it during the Punic wars, when Hannibal was poised to take rome. To me it seems unsurprising that Caesar would report a lot of sacrifice because it was at a time of war.
@MccFallen Sure. But often it ends up being the case that such accounts are more authentic than modern historians give them credit. We know forms of human sacrifice existed in the ancient world. As mentioned, even Greeks and Romans practised it on occasions. It might be uncomfortable for us today. But that doesn't mean there's no truth to it. And frankly, it's not any more barbaric or out there than feeding condemned criminals or Christians to lions or other forms of mass execution. The ancient world was kinda fucked up even compared to later periods.
I SERIOUSLY enjoyed this FANTASTIC documentary! BTW towards the end of this excellent documentary you mentioned that it isn't known where the title 'druid' came from. I was a graduate of the University of Bangor where Professor Frances Llewellyn, derives the word druid as coming from the Welsh 'Derwydd' or 'Derwyddon' plural druids. Derwydd & Derwyddon derives from the Welsh word for Oak 'Derw' so 'Derwydd' means (he of the oak) Or for the plural 'Derwyddon' (they of the oak) whilst understanding & remembering how important the Oak was to the Druids. It's considered by some scholars, that in the proto Celtic languages 'Dru' or 'Deru' (modern Welsh Derw) is the Greek atempt of writing the sound of the celtic word. I'd be interested to know what you think.
@@ajrwilde14 There are two groups of celtic language, p- and q-celtic. Q-celtic are the "gaelic" languages spoken in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. P-Celtic (he Brythonic group) is spoken in Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. But they were all celtic tribes and may well have developed similar words. And since the Romans never went to Ireland, they may well have picked up the welsh/britannic word and imposed it on all things celtic and related to priests.
I adore these videos. No silly yourube humor or jump cuts. It’s nice to learn something on yourube without being treated like a teenager with no attention span. No fluff here, just good stuff
Cognitive dissonance has had a long run in human affairs. Complicity through willful ignorance of the hypocrisy. "We are all right but they are all wrong."
Human sacrifice is practiced by all manner of religions including Christianity the true reality normally benefiting their religion or civilization. heretics. sex offenders, murders, traitors, thieves, prisoners of war , foreigners and some cases like the roman empire slaves and such sacrifice mean needing less building , cages food and other resources and a alternate to sacrifice may be enslaving the less violent offenders who are easier to control and a method of controlling the more violent is using more violent methods like a whipping pole and force work like mining or farming with armed slave masters.

I have always had such a huge fascination with the Druids, especially in separating fact from fiction. This video was everything I could have hoped for and more. Thanks for the work and research you've put in to this, and all of your videos.
this video is lies.. Irish druids and European druids were not the same Irish druids were about long before European druids... this guy is just reading what some one else said happened in history, doesnt make it true.
@@relentless1989 Can you supply a history as well researched and thought up as this one is? Are you able to get access to pieces of manuscripts hidden in special rooms in museums? I doubt it.
I read once the druids had an 'oak alphabet" which was a leaf based alphabet read by touch. Different leaves stood for different letters. They were strung on thread and hung in stone buildings where the druids would walk thru and touch the leaves, identifying them and knowing what they 'said'. This may be one reason for the lack of written accounts - the leaves would obviously crumble over time and leave only dust eventually if left behind after retreat and no conquerer would know what they meant.
Gaelic alphabet was each "letter" was a tree. It's hidden knowledge passed down as they were genocided over it bc the invaders couldn't make the same connection which made them so jealous they offed them
This makes no sense, as you still had to visualize it by touch to see the shape. Thus you would be able to read it by vision. But let the druids do whatever they like.
@@benegmond6584 Not to mention that all oak leaves are basically the same. "Look at that, a druid message - what does it say?" "Leaf leaf leaf leaf leaf." "Woah, how did you read that without even touching it?!"

Good research! Very interesting material indeed. I was contemplating on the 'Golden sickle', and remembered that a lot of tribes at the time ,north of Greece used them as weapons AND tools. This could explain some of the ideas that ancient writers had about druids. But as you skillfully pointed out at the end of the video, most likely 'druids' were yet another over-generalized term for priests of numerous different tribes. Many of our ancestors did not even speak same language and yet were categorized as 'Germanic' or 'Celtic', which is appealing in romanticized view but untrue.
You’re so cool, dude! I can’t even imagine all that hard work, that you put into production of this documentary. It’s 3am and Im baked and I just wanna say thanks for providing me with both entertainment and precious history!

I took a year of Religious Studies at uni and they don't even try to teach about Norse or Celtic religion for the reasons mentioned in the video, but that just makes it more interesting in my opinion. A bit of speculation and analysis.
There are still people trying to actively practice these religions, as well. Some use historical documents to reconstruct the practices, others make it up as they go. But these are real religions, and people genuinely believe in something other than the Abrahamic religions. It's a shame that even schools behave as though your only choices are Monotheism or Atheism.
You are hands down the best historical documentarian I have ever watched, on TH-cam or on TV/movies. You are equivalent to rich, complex, detailed books.
The fact that you have gone through the trouble to add subtitles should automatically add 10,000 likes to this vid. Delivery of the narration and imagery is superb. Well done, I say.
I have wondered has the very early existence of the gaels as far back as early Egypt been confirmed in history also the origins of the druids go back to melchisadeck of Bible fame would love to know
And here I thought Druids were just a Dungeons and Dragons class. It’s very intriguing that a Druid ended up becoming a regular video game playable class that portrays them as hermits who live in the forests and use forces of nature.
Well no it's also a pagan religion I went on a pilgrimage when I was younger and studied every religion and practice ( that is witch craft you either practice it or you don't ) the most fascinating was a Comanche spiritual leader who took me under his wing and taught me about medicine circles and animal medicine and studied everything from roman and protestant Christianity to voodoo there are four forms of voodoo to satanism and druidism was in there some where with wicca druidism was very similar to the Comanche believes
Druids are nothing else than witches/sorcerers/Satanists. All the same since they worship demons for benefits. In return they will go to hell fire after they die
The most famous of druids was called Panoramix. He invented a magic potion which helped his fellow villagers to repel the Romans successfully. You can read about his adventures in" les adventures d'Asterix. le gaulois. Irrespective of this, your video on the subject of the druids is well researched and greatly appreciated.

Outstanding documentary, very well done! Regarding the question of whether or not the ancient druids practiced human sacrifice. I would think that if they did as Caesar claimed, we would find evidence of charring or other damage caused by fire to the bones found at ritual sites. Has anyone ever seen any evidence like that?
Notwithstanding the Roman tradition of making shit up about their enemies, I don't find it difficult to believe that they did sacrifice humans to the gods. The nordic peoples are known to have done so for centuries after the the western roman empire fell. I don't think its that much of a stretch to believe.

The story of the Celtic peoples proves how crucial a solid writing system is to cultural preservation. We know more about the Sumerians than we know about Celtic diaspora religious beliefs.
Not true; you've made more than a few logical fallacies here. First in comparing Sumerian writing to Celtic sacred oral traditions - Celtics HAD WRITING but the druids DID NOT USE IT because 1. it was thought to be disrespectful to write sacred knowledge 2. it was not for everyone and required the commitment to EARN the knowledge. 3. ORAL TRADITION IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE. Don't believe me? Start making a list of every song you know the words to starting with Happy Birthday then every nursery rhyme and holiday song, then move into your favorite bands - did you learn those in books? You are parroting misinformation from the same biased pedophile Greco Roman "Westerners" (actually Mediterranean) who describe everyone not in their pedophile culture as "Barbarians." It is highly bigoted and biased perspectives from unsavory cultures that colonized Europe long before we had a name for it. As far as not having preservation of our ways - those (ehem british monarchies) pretending there is a great western civilization have failed at erasing northern European heritage. My mothers tales were of Oden, Thor, Erik the Red, Leif Erikson, Freya, and long before the Vikings told tales of Ragnar my mother did around my dining room table when I was a small child - not tales of hercules or zues, not Mediterranean mythology - Northern legends from our ancestors ORALLY transferred in our very own current generation in Southern CA - half way around the world. My mothers tales were oral tradition. We know very much about many cultures that did not use what you are thinking of as traditional writing systems. Your final fallacy is that "we" don't know about Celtic diaspora religious beliefs. "You" don't know. Very interesting and well researched, thank you. For what it is worth, doubt very much Celtic druids would be for human sacrifice. As the Gaedhlic language closest to the ancient languages further east, mayhap the druids were the last remnants of a philosophy from that area, considering reincarnation / knowing there is no such thing as death, that the spirit moves on, their reference for nature etc., the taking of life to appease a deity, does not fit
17:56 Diogenes mentions that The Gymnosophists (predecessor of Brahmins, it seems) are described as similar to the Druids. I've heard theorized that the Druids and Brahmins both evolved from the same Indo-European spiritual class... very interesting video, fantastic research as always.
European languages also tend to have Sanskrit congnates. Perhapes the druids preserved the more Brahmin type practices better than other European or Semitic cultures.
If it was Indo European though why wouldn't it be found in other cultures? Why no such thing among Germanic peoples, Slavs, Greeks etc? Also, people focused on IE tend to undervalue the importance of the pre IE Indus Valley civilization. Look up Pashupati seal (it's from Indus Valley, before the IE came to the region) and compare with Gundestrup cauldron... I've been raking my brain to find an explanation as to the resemblance. Also, is the belief in reincarnation truly IE? I'm not convinced. So I definitely see the connection between Druids and Gurus (rather than Brahmins), but I cannot make sense of it as it doesn't seem to be an Indo-European connection. If you have ideas I'm all ears lol

That is entirely intentional. They don't call it the Christian era for nothin. Well said!

@@MccFallen Right. Not their best, rapists, murderers, drug dealers. Deplorable really. 😏
Sounds sound to me.
Thanks for the Welsh lesson.

This may be one reason for the lack of written accounts - the leaves would obviously crumble over time and leave only dust eventually if left behind after retreat and no conquerer would know what they meant.
Gaelic alphabet was each "letter" was a tree. It's hidden knowledge passed down as they were genocided over it bc the invaders couldn't make the same connection which made them so jealous they offed them
Look into the ogham alphabet. Also the Druids used to tie series of knots in lines of string that corresponded with letters and words.

But these are real religions, and people genuinely believe in something other than the Abrahamic religions. It's a shame that even schools behave as though your only choices are Monotheism or Atheism.

“Galacia” is a Celtic name originating from the Celtic tribe known as the “Caellici” a name which seems no different from the Celtic goddess “cailli” and “Caillic” whose origin is “Kalika” the Vedic Mother goddess also known as Mother “Kali”.
~
“Galacia” is a province of Spain, it occupies 6% of the Spanish landmass and 6% of the Spanish population. Its ancient Celtic history goes back to at least 600 B.C, its people the “Galatians” take pride in their ancient Celtic heritage and their modern city of “Lugo” is named after the Celtic god “Lugh” who was the “master of skills”.
~
“Ptolemy” the Greek astrologer writes in his encyclopaedia “Natural History” that the Celtic tribe known as the “Callaeci” which gives us the name “Galacia” means “those who worship the Cailleach”. The “Cailleach” are the “Caillic” the Celtic goddess whose source is the Vedic goddess “Kalika” and “Kali”.
~
“Galatia” was also the name of an ancient region of Turkey covering the provinces of “Ankara” “Corum” and “Yozgat” its name coming from the Celts who settled there some 2300 years ago. Throughout Turkey the worship of the Mother goddess was once very prominent, it was the home of the female warriors known as the “Amazons” and we also find “Mount Ida” whose name means “the mountain of the Mother goddess”.
~
So just as within the country of Turkey we find the region of “Gallipoli” whose original name was “Kalipoli” as in “the city ( puri ) of Kali” we also have “Galatia” known by the Romans as “Gallia” and this seems to have its source in the Celtic Mother goddess “Cailli” and “Caillic” from the Vedic “Kalika” and “Kali”.
~
“Galicia” was also the name of a major Kingdom found throughout Eastern Europe and which once held portions of Poland and modern day Ukraine and we also find it as a village in Northern Cyprus famous for its grape and wine festivals.
~
“Gaul” was an historic region of Western Europe which covered “France” “Luxembourg” “Belgium” “Switzerland” “Netherlands” “Germany” and parts of “Northern Italy”. It may also be related to “Galicia” and it may also give us the word “Gaelic” a language of the Celts, though the academics strongly deny this.
~
This Celtic Mother goddess “Cailli” is the daughter of “Grian” the Celtic name for the god of the Sun. “Grian” comes from the Sanskrit root “ghr” meaning to “burn” to “shine” and “ghrna” meaning “heat” “warmth” “sunshine” and this becomes “ghrni” meaning the “Sun” which is the source of the Celtic “Grian” the father of “Cailli” the Celtic Mother goddess.
~
The Celts worshipped the “goddess” they appeared throughout Ireland as the “Teuatta De Danam” the “children of the goddess Danu” an ancient Vedic goddess of the waters. Throughout Ireland we also find the Celtic goddess “Bovind” the “white cow goddess” who manifests as the river “Boyne” and which is very much related to the Vedic “Govinda” the “lover of the cows”. Historian, novelist and foremost expert on Celtic culture “Peter Beresford Ellis” says the following.
~
”The Goddess Boann, whose name means “white cow” gave her name to the river Boyne. She was mother to Aonghus Og, the love God and was called “Guou - uinda” or “cow finder”. Now this appears almost exactly the same as the Vedic name “Govinda” the epithet for Lord Krsna.”
~
“ Among the ancient Celts “Danu” was regarded as the "Mother Goddess." The Irish Gods and Goddesses were the Tuatha De Danaan ( Children of Danu ). “Danu” was the "divine waters" falling from heaven and nurturing “Bíle” the sacred oak from whose acorns their children sprang. Moreover, the waters of “Danu” went on to create the great Celtic sacred river “Danuvius” today called the “Danube”. Many European rivers bear the name of “Danu” the Rhône ( ro- Dhanu "Great Danu") and several rivers called “Don”. Rivers were sacred in the Celtic world and places where votive offerings were deposited and burials often conducted."
~
"The Druids of the ancient Celtic world have a startling kinship with the brahmins of the Hindu religion and were, indeed, a parallel development from their common Indo-European cultural root which began to branch out probably five thousand years ago. It has been only in recent decades that Celtic scholars have begun to reveal the full extent of the parallels and cognates between ancient Celtic society and Vedic culture. The very name Druid is composed of two Celtic word roots which have parallels in Sanskrit, indeed, the root vid for knowledge, which also emerges in the Sanskrit word Veda, demonstrates the similarity. The Celtic root dru which means "immersion" also appears in Sanskrit. So a Druid was one immersed in knowledge." Peter Beresford Ellis.

That's about your interest in doing the research - or perhaps it is about your own family lineage not being Northern European.

Idk. They burned witches and drown them np... Even though the ones that drown weren't witches... 😏🙄
Idk. They burned witches and drown them np... Even though the ones that drown weren't witches... 😏🙄
17:56 Diogenes mentions that The Gymnosophists (predecessor of Brahmins, it seems) are described as similar to the Druids. I've heard theorized that the Druids and Brahmins both evolved from the same Indo-European spiritual class... very interesting video, fantastic research as always.
I think this helps push the fact that all indo-European cultures came from the same unifying pagan/shamanic background.
European languages also tend to have Sanskrit congnates. Perhapes the druids preserved the more Brahmin type practices better than other European or Semitic cultures.
Do check out Michael Tsarion’s epic work - Irish Origins of Civilisation. Unslaved.com
