    Gear reviews and ramblings is always fascinating, especially as most gear reviews are for overseas terain and trails. I just managed to score Xmid-2, kind of excited to see how it does in NZ. It looks like good tent, always interesting seeing the weird cut shapes to cut down weight on Nemo's, it's good way to doing, when the tent is for more favourable weather.

    • @AbelandVictoria
      @AbelandVictoria  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Them inner tent doesn’t allow for much head room but apart from that there is sufficient room that your mat and sleep bag wouldn’t be rubbing on the sides of the tent. It’s a 1 person ultra light tent so may as sell save the extra 120grams with the one person version over the two person. It’s totally big enough for one person my size.

    "You're not going to pitch this tent in rough situations".. any experience with this tent in strong winds or snow? I bought the Nemo Kunai some years back, it's a 4 season front entry tent but it's a right bastard to get in and out of as a tall person, especially if there's rain or snow on the fly. And yeah, the sil nylon does tend to sag quite a lot in sleet and rain.

    Nice review!! Wondering why you say that you wouldn't use this tent if the weather is a bit rough?? Do you think it wouldn't hold up in a day / night of foul NZ weather?? Can you recommend any 1P Tent under 1kg that you would trust in foul weather?? Needs to be very packable for Ultralight Fast Bikepacking (Not Dyneema). What quilt have you got there?? Any recommendations for a good / great quilt that is good at 0 Deg C?? again, needs to be very packable and able to stuff in BikePacking Bags. Thanks :)

    • @AbelandVictoria
      @AbelandVictoria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think any tents under 1kg will hold up to properly bad weather here in nz. The nemo will take some bad weather but not a storm. I think your best bet for a ultralight tent if you are concerned about wind and rain would be a trekking pole tent. I personally haven’t used one but I have seen they are surprisingly strong.

    • @AbelandVictoria
      @AbelandVictoria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for the quilt I have a UGQ bandit-1 degree comfort rating with 800 fill power down. I am extremely happy with it.

    • @stephenhammond3656
      @stephenhammond3656 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AbelandVictoria Thanks for the reply. Yeah, It's difficult in that under 1kg category. I've had pretty extreme weather in my Hubba Hubba and a Hilleberg Enan and survived very well through the night - they are around the 1.2 kg mark. Tarptent and Durston have some nice offerings around or just under 1kg. I wont have trekking poles on the Bike, but they offer a carbon pole alternative :) Dyneema is attractive, but the lifespan is quite short relative to other Tents and you need to be a bit precious with them when packing down etc....plus the cost is offensive!!

      @@stephenhammond3656 I think it’s
      Jsut an inevitable trade off to go ultra light. The nemo is pretty awesome it packs down very small and seem very well made and designed. The osmo fabric seems pretty legit also. No saggy rain fly which is great. I much prefer a quilt. Fabric doesn’t pull underneath you when you roll around in the night and you can stretch your legs out of you want. Take a look on UGQ website can customise endlessly.

    I don’t use trekking pole, so the Zpacks Altaplex total weight is 437g + support pole 110g + 10*6.2g carbon stake + 3g DCF stake sack = 612g. But it’s difficult to pitch in hardrock area, or uneven ground area. Also Altaplex needs way too much footprint to guyout their 10 absurdly long guylines.
    The Nemo hornet elite 1p looks very great, if I replace its stakes with zpacks carbon stake(6.2g each), then the total weight could be about 770g ?! That seems to be a totally acceptable weight penalty(770-612=158g)weight for a easier to pitch, semi-freestanding , more privacy, not so translucent, and double wall tent!!

    • @AbelandVictoria
      @AbelandVictoria  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey yeah 6 pegs to properly pitch it without using the guy lines.
      I weighed the entire set up on my scale with my own pegs and I believe it was under 750 grams.

    If you're splitting hairs over the weight of the pegs, you're doing it wrong. Packing light makes sense to a degree, but much of this has become a numbers game fad that doesn't translate to anything resembling a noticeable difference on your back.
