Dinghy Cruising Basics Ep. 5 Rig Launch Sail

  • I rigged Moonlight in the dark so as to be on the water at first light, and beat the rush of boats onto the river. I launched her into a strong tidal flow with the wind coming from the opposite direction to the current. While out there sailing I had a bit of a rave about some of the dinghy cruising basics.

When rigging I was thinking about the conditions the cyclone offshore was likely to deliver. Turns out it was gentle, 10 knots with an occasional gust to 15. But I was glad to have reefed the sail. It takes a lot of concentration to sail a cruising dinghy single-handed and film at the same time. Rig Launch Sail

Ah, dirty stained sails, chaffed ropes, fresh breeze , real man! God bless you mate. Loved the song. Hope you keep sailing into your 100's.

I'm a survivor of quad bypass surgery. My skin is covered in barnacles. I went through a business collapse, and my faithful wife has some health challenges. Not surprising when I consider what she went through. The main thing is we are still together and I do indeed plan on sailing on into my 80's and beyond. Thanks for raising the bar to 100's. God has and continues to bless us through it all. I'm working hard and dreaming of my next boat. Thinking a clansman 30 (upgraded folk boat) built in the 70's and rugged as all get up. If the plan comes together I will be doing some coastal cruising of the East Coast of Oz.

Enjoying your video work music and commentary. Re Bernard's comment, I found applying oxalic acid powder diluted in water dissolved all the rust out of my sails with a fresh lease on life!

Hadn’t thought of oxalic. Makes sense. I’ll give it a try.

Glad you enjoyed it. We are on the Sunshine Coast and mostly I have ventured North. I should explore Moreton Bay and the Gold this winter.

Might need an ode to your new hat.

We so enjoy your videos. I have a Seahopper folding dinghy (8-ft), and am just learning to sail. Your tips and advice are treasures... Given my craft is much smaller than Moonlight, the advice is multiplied 10-fold! Cheers from Japan... : )

This morning I went for a walk along the dunes. We have very high tides and huge surf conditions from the cyclone. I took your advice when a larger than usual set came through. My hat was blown off and landed in the surf, so I dived for it. I saved the hat but lost my hatband. I nuked my car keys and my iPhone (supposed to be waterproof) got dunked. The jury is still out on the iPhone. Anyway, saved the hat. 🙂 I had to do the walk of shame up last all the onlookers on the deck.

I use a large fender the size of a beach roller and a couple of old style pfd’s. watertight stuff bags for bedding and clothes also add to the bouyancy

What music do you as background?

Generally I like to use music licensed through artlist. Links in the description. Recently I used some that
Comes with my wondershare filmira program used for video editing. Going way back I used TH-cam free music found in TH-cam studio but I found it was limited and boring.
