  • Here is a quick video talking about why it is important to know how to SAIL ON and OFF the ANCHOR without using your ENGINE, and how to do it!
We think having the ability and confidence to sail on and off the anchor is a critical skill that every sailor have. For the first few times, it should be practiced in ideal conditions in a large anchorage with no other boats around when the wind is blowing OFF the land and one does not have a lee shore. Same goes for sailing off of the anchor. This is an especially important skill to have when sailing in remote places where help may not even exist!
So go ahead and leave ignition alone and enjoy the fun and freedom that sailing without an engine can offer!

That’s brilliant! I know the theory but have never seen it put in practice so clearly, will give it a go next time out.
I have just refitted a 1983 Westerly Sealord & about to start getting her out there 👌⛵️
    Cheers, Jonathan

    Thanks for the tips!
Btw I was wondering I also have a wooden slab on starboard before midship, as well as one towards starboard bow on my discus. Do you know what these were for?

Our pleasure! If they are on the life lines, those are probably for putting water or diesel jugs against. :)

@@SailingSeaDreamofClyde Ah I meant the wooden slab just forward of the jib sheet track on starboard. I can see on the video you have the exact same as on my discus.
There was some leakage there so I had to rebed it and there were some drillholes through the deck below it. But I guess you then also not know what originally was there.
