    "Whether consciously or not, a wooden boat builder taps into the essence of nature, relying on its inherent order to shape a truly exquisite creation. In reality, it is the fundamental harmony and reflection of the natural world that makes the boat so fascinating." - Lawrence W. Cheek
    There's something enchanting about wooden boats. Every moment spent on them, from the pleasant scent of freshly planed wood to the gentle sway of the water, evokes pure bliss. However, the allure comes with a great deal of effort. Wooden boats require constant upkeep and meticulous maintenance to avoid falling into disrepair.
    In this video series, we will delve into the art of restoring wooden boats. We'll cover topics such as selecting the perfect vessel, evaluating it for restoration, executing hull repairs and enhancements, revitalizing clinker and carvel boats, and applying the final touches with varnish and sealant. Along the way, we'll offer practical advice for working with wood. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just starting your boating journey, come and join me in exploring the world of wooden boat restoration through the Sarah Ann restoration project.

    Enjoying your videos and having left Tasmania it’s nice to see places with fond memories. I don’t know what the options are but would love to see sailing on one of the highland lakes. I know the lakes in part are shallow but wonder if sailing is possible there? Also, Macquarie Harbour would be a beautiful option…looking forward to your continued experiences. (BTW, I hope some of the Tasmanian Wineries have taken up your offer to review their wines😉)

      I definitely plan to visit some of the lakes. Pedder is on my radar, and I used to fish on Arthurs lake as a child with my father. Would like to go there for a few days.

      Often mysterious how TH-cam decides to push these out. Actually they prefer to say people pull them but as we know they are marketers at heart! I do appreciate the feedback, after several years I’m still trying to find my natural “voice”

      I'm keen to encourage others to do a raid on the Tamar. Most of the locals go elsewhere in
      Tasmania for their sailing.

    Renowned sailor Joshua Slocum sailed the rivers of Tasmania. He also wrote that he considered giving up on his around-the-world voyage and just living out the rest of his days on Tasmania. Ultimately, he didn't, but he thought about it.

    Chris thanks for another enjoyable video. I enjoy the mix of sailing adventures and maintenance as I suspect, like many other boat owners, we are looking for ideas for our own endless, and enjoyable, list of jobs. With regard to dropping the headsail when sailing solo in testing conditions I installed a down haul system on my last boat and have gone with a furler on my current vessel. You may consider the latter not in keeping with Sarah Annne’s style, but both come in handy to avoid heart in mouth situations. Thanks again and stay safe.

    Looking a bit rough there Chris that wind was up you should think about putting a downhaul on the jib because you sail in the river not much room your new garden views are awesome cheers steve 👍

    Looks like you would benefit from a down haul line for your job (led aft). It makes dowsing the foresail fast and easy. Mine involves a length of 6mm line, a small block, a fairlead and a clete.

    I would think that traveling from the mouth of the Rubicon through east of the toung and as far up the Franklin as suits you would make a good episode. Anchoring in the little bay on the southern side of eagle point would go well for lunch. But you are right sailing up and down the East Coast would be magnificent and would make a great series of videos. Keep up the good work.

    • @SmallSailboatCruising
      @SmallSailboatCruising  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be very adventurous indeed. Against the prevailing wind, and currents into the coast that has a fetch that extends right around the globe terminating on a shallow west coast shelf. Not many places to haul out either. Probably beyond my capacity, but I do intend some more localized West Coast trips. Interesting you chose the Rubicon as a starting place. Not sure about the access to the Bass Strait from that river, but I might look into that as it is not a well-known river. What can you tell me about it?

    i have recently abandoned sailing. But in the 11 boats ( single handed sailing) I have had. If not fitted already. I converted all control lines to cockpit control to save getting up on deck when it was a bit iffy.

    • @SmallSailboatCruising
      @SmallSailboatCruising  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Im thinking of a furler for the Jib would be a good solution. extending the main halyard to the cockpit would also help. Being only 18 ft long, going forward in a heavy sea would be nigh on impossible.

    Thank you Christopher, your video was an enjoyable break from the brisk winter weather of the Upper peninsula.
    Sorry that I cannot suggest anything extra for your films, I enjoy every aspect.
    Four comments/compliments:
    Great to have family along-it is a special joy to see them experiencing and sharing the adventure!
    Mangos..... I stay away from these because of an unpleasant episode in Florida. I was eating my first and being silly while doing so, in that I kept the skin in long contact with my lips. An unpleasant rash developed and spread from this location-unsightly and uncomfortable. So, I just avoid them.
    Bungee’s. Your film sequence of removing the bungee that prevented halyards from strumming against the mast, reminded me of a bungee that kept in my classroom desk drawer. I had used it for the same purpose and occasionally I would open up the drawer, and recall with restorative peace, the time spent on the water..
    Rocks. Your filming of the beach was such a beautiful shot of the rock variety exist there! People come from many miles to walk the Lake Superior shoreline and “rock hunt” for the pretty stones. Iroquois lighthouse is close to my home, and Whitefish point is just a “stones-throw” further north west.
    Thank you again!

    • @SmallSailboatCruising
      @SmallSailboatCruising  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The rocks are terminal morain from an ancient glacier. I was a primary school teacher. I didn't enjoy it much and set up a bungee across my desk drawer to overcome boredom. I was firing little pellets of paper lobbing them into the back corner where my "naughty" boys were. I was naughtier than them! I was loaded up and ready to fire when the director of education walked into my classroom. They actually liked me and wanted me to stay on. I looked down at the drawer which I had shut rapidly when he walked in. I thought the proposal through momentarily, then replied - No, probably not for me. I went on to building several successful businesses after that. Thanks for your detailed and interesting reply. Cheers Chris

    Hi Chris, I have sailed with Sarah Ann around Schouten Island when I was a sea scout in 1976. John Philp was our scout master. I now own Ajax, a 1928 Ned Jack built sailing dinghy that John renovated in the 1980's. Ajax still lives on the Tamar, near Redbill Point. It would be great to meet you some time. I couldn't find you on Facebook - can you send a link? Cheers Rod Clark
