    I am Team Mitsubishi Pajero. I've had the 1, two 2's and now the 3. Very good cars the Pajeros, the suspension is incredible 😎
    The 4 kinda has the Discovery "feel" of moving away from off road to luxury.

    I bought a Pajero a few months back purely on price. I've had Jeeps and Land Rovers in the past with no bad feeling for either. The Pajero is just an honest performer in my book, it's ok at most things and the engine and drive chain are really well sorted. Mine doesn't beep much, maybe Mitsubishi were listening to you?

      The Pajero is a highly underrated 4WD , very reliable, but the 3.2 diesel with the Aisan auto, Mitsibishi Superselect transmission is the pick, a mandatory 2 inch lift kit, All terrain tyres and it will go as far as any other of the best.
      Landrover and Jeep have had appalling reliability and build quality over the years and are not popular at all in remote outback Australia or for that matter most of Africa,

      I've had my 2009 NT Pajero 3.2 common rail for quite a long time, it has the updated Aisin 5 speed auto, I have found it very very good off road and tow a 2.3 ton caravan with it, now with over 300,000km on it and working it as hard as ever I have a lot of respect for it, it's honest, reliable and very easy to live with every day, it's my fourth 4wd and by far the best, to me it's not too fancy but more on the practical side.

    I agree with everything you said Andrew great review,
    however being a pajero owner i do have one hack for all the kids playing at home, if you buy a pajero with a rear differential lock, it turns off the Traction Control making the beeping nul and void. with a few modifications like my gen 4 bash plates, lift, bar with winch and 33 inch muddies, it is very capable. and with it approaching 270k km it has only had a new alternator due to my mud fetish ;)

      @@jerrymyahzcat the locker is only needed when the beeping is an issue. The beeping is the traction control over heating. In regular 4wding you won’t get the beeping. It’s long extended periods of really low traction.

    Excellent video. I've been thinking I'd love to hear Andrew review the 4x4 Dual-cabs (Hilux, Ranger, D-max, etc). They seem to be the face of 4x4 overlanding at the moment, at least in Australia.

      @willyd-adv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having a swag in the bed of a ute and a 2 inch lift isnt overlanding.
      Overlanding is more about living out of your vehicle which just isnt good with a ute unless you have a demountable camper.
      Trust me the Aussi "overland" scene sucks compared to the rest of the world.

    • @funkyfedaykin
      @funkyfedaykin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@willyd-adv I was thinking of those that are kitted out with off-road gear with custom cabinets on the back and often a rooftop tent + awning. Dual cabs seem to be popular firstly because they are easily customised (as Andrew noted in the video this is a key thing for such vehicles) with plenty of aftermarket options. Next they are intended to be versatile off road and comfortable on road. They're not prohibitively expensive, and they're often able to be used as a regular vehicle when not overlanding.

  • @macmurfy2jka
    @macmurfy2jka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    The designers at jeep were not worried about making the Grand Cherokee customizable because the have the Wrangler for that. A Wrangler can just about be built from the chassis up from aftermarket parts. It’s really incredible actually. There is an entire economy over here in the states that is based on Wrangler modification.

    • @loganholmberg2295
      @loganholmberg2295 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's still pretty customizable. Sure it's not a rock crawler like a Wrangler can be but I know a lot of people that Mopar out their Cherokees and Renegades cause they are comfortable to drive for long periods of time in the muck with their families and be a primary car at the same time.
      You would be surprised at the aftermarket options you can get on Cherokees, and even Compasses and Renegades. I'd take any of them over the SUV options Ford or Chevy are offering nowadays. Are they as off road worthy as a Jeep? No. Can you turn them into pretty capable offroaders thanks to the Mopar aftermarket? Yes.

      @jakelunniss1399 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jake Lunniss Trust me, i get that.the family owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2)
      I was just pointing it out for Andrew.
      Believe it or not the, Jeep WK2 only has 2 more cubic feet of storage than the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JKU). And the JKU is like only three inches shorter than the WK2. On paper, at least, the two vehicles are in the same class. Owning a 2008 JKUR, the WK2 is a much better general purpose (read on road/off road) vehicle than the JKU. Thats why I pointed it out.
      I would much rather be driving a WK2 daily in account of the shorter wheel base alone. I have had lots of trouble going from my previous vehicle to the JKUR for that reason alone. But i have this vehicle because that’s just how things worked out.
      If Andrew does buy the WK2, i hope he buys an aftermarket bumper that improves its angle of attack. With the current front facia there just isnt great wheel access on account of all the air dams.

    • @loganholmberg2295
      @loganholmberg2295 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@macmurfy2jka Good point. But then allot of the mods people do is go to a sturdier bumper. I know I would just to put a good winch on it. That's what I really like about the new RAM Power Wagon os that you can get a winch from the factory. I wish they did that on some of the Jeep models. As a former owner of 4 Discoveries I now own a 79 dual cab. I wouldn’t pay the increased price for the Discovery 5 as I saw no value in why I had to pay $20,000 more than the previous model for lesser features? Landrover no doubt lost a heap of customers on the latest model! It’s less practical & way to expensive. Even after being offered a significant discount by Landrover on the purchase price I still stepped back in space & time & bought the Landcruiser 79 dual cab & I love it.😊

      yeah mate think that would just go to prado. cant beat a good ole toyote. from one brexan to another we know that rover aint winnin' in reliability, it didnt in the 90s and its even more complicated now. jeep is a chrysler brand with typical midrange american reliability, although a supercharged 6+ liter v8 engine could wear a bit on the drivetrain. mitsubishi is a bit of a mystery but should be okay. i have myself a 2007 lexus gx470 (a prado with a bit of luxury inside) and its fantastically reliable. the 4.7 liter v8 puts out more power than i know what to do with and center locking diff, traction control, and fantastic low range makes the limestone around here seem a bit less jagged.

    • @weedmastersr
      @weedmastersr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They've all become a lot more complicated and impossible to fix. They could be just as durable as the older ones (doubtful), but the difficulty and cost of maintenance and orders of magnitude higher. Toyota is the only one still doing well in this category.

    Andrew i 100% agree on everything you said. however I drive the new Toyota Prado everyday for work in N.T outback Australia and i actually dont mind the interior. (a bit bland compared to the others but practical. Which is what think Toyota was going for in its offroad use.)
    I absolutely agree that the interior of the Discovery looks better, but lets be honest id never take that vehicle off road (especially with those low profile wheels.) furthermore trying to maintain that interior with the soft leather dash etc would be a nightmare.
    The Jeep Cheroke, in terms of power performance and price range with all of its fruits it ticks all the boxes but and this is a big but.....their notorious name for unreliability.

    Hi Andrew Great analysis regarding those vehicles. I own a Prado 150 (2015) and like you I too feel the interior's a little boring, it's true Toyota has had this model for ten years, one would think that would be plenty time for to make some meaningful refresh to that very bland interior. When I was in the market for a go-anywhere SUV I watched and red many many reviews and with a conviction even without a test drive, I already knew I wanted a Prado Landcruiser. Now from my experience of owning the Prado 150 (4yrs now) I believe the fundamentals of the Prado AKA "Landcruiser" is mostly a sound and reliable vehicle. Yes it's true this Toyota is still Mr reliable = Landcruiser"

    really hard review for the pajero, I'm really happy with mine. I think you have to test this car also in ruff terrain outside the dunes. Also I think the pajero has one of the most underrated traction controlsystems, it works brilliant. There are enough videos online which compare the jeep, toyota and the pajero, the prado and pajero are often the best cars in view of traction control systems.
    But yes the pajero is a bit outdated and not longer in production.
    But I also think, for everyone who search a real and affordeble 4x4, the pajero is a quit good choice. Is reliable, powerful drivetrain, timeless designed and in normal onroad use really good to drive.
    Additionally there are a huge amount of accessories for the pajero gen 4 on the market, to make him better in view of offroad performance if needed.

I live in Brazil and the cars available here in the appropriate price range are: Mitsubishi Pajero 2011; Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2007; Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (also called challenger or Dakar) 2010; Toyota Fortuner 2008. How good are these cars off-road? How stable are they on the road? How well built are they? How comfortable are they on difficult roads? I personally am inclined towards Pajero or Pajero Sport. I prefer to have the key controls up and away from anything that can hit or accidently activate them. Toyota does a good job of that. All manufacturers need to rethink the traction control and provide a true off road version so we don't get the funny noises and beeping or limp mode activated when I really want power to the wheels - any wheel. It needed more maintenance than an open system with traction control but it was an actual lsd/locker as opposed to brake bakes. Quadra-drive was magic when it was maintained properly and it could fully and automatically lock the differentials smoothly and seamlessly. Land Rover's system, was mostly a test to see how fast you could make the three amigo's appear and disappear.

    You really can get some good after market gear for these now, and with a good set of off road tyres will keep up with the best and you don't need to change everything like the 70 series LC. Also don't have to put in a lift kit, lift it up with the air suspension when needed and put it back down when touring on the black top.
    Great diesel engine with class leading power, what more do you want. I'm a little bias, as I have a 2010 WH diesel and that's very good.

    Hands down I’d buy the Discovery 5. The rear end is a bit ugly (though you probably get used to it) but the rest is gorgeous. It’s super capable with the best engine and best 4WD system by far. It’s the nicest on-road and nicest off-road and has the best interior. As you say (and this is a huge huge thing) you sit in the cabin and that’s what you see and feel all day - can’t beat the interior (though I’d get cream or white and never dark colours eugh). You don’t drive from the outside. The Jeep is nice inside too but the Land Rover is better - the other two are bland and disgraceful inside. I’ve driven a Discovery 5 for 2 days and it’s hands down the winner. Wish I could own one now but my current Land Rover is a work of art and suits me just fine for now.

    Great review and very funny end.
    Having replaced my stolen Disco 4 with a Disco 5, I must say I love it. But you're right, in many ways the Disco 4 was more practical and I do miss the drop down tailgate. I don't mind the look of the back end but I do miss the drop down tailgate. For everything else I use the vehicle for; long motorway journeys, towing a large caravan, carrying lots of stuff in incredible comfort, it's the perfect vehicle. But I don't go off road; a few muddy building sites and boggy fields aside. If I did, I'd have bought another Disco 4 without a thought.
    All this aside though, I can't disagree with any of your comments and observations regarding any of the vehicles. As I said, great review.

    Awesome video. I waexpecting you to talk about reliability since that one of the most important aspects for the use these vehicles are intended. I had a Grand Cherokee 2015 and was not reliable. Many people in North America dismiss the GC becasue of reliability. Is it any more unreliable than, say Land Rover? I guess the Japanese are more reliable?

    The dashboard always seems to be a weak point with Japanese cars. I chose the Grand Cherokee partly because of Quadra Drive II but also because they had a 3L engine compared to at the time Discovery’s 2.5L. Now we’re on the new Grand Cherokee and they’ve made it much more luxurious inside. It was quite an upgrade for buying the same car again albeit the next version. Also the people in the Land Rover dealership were extremely snooty.

    Absolutely correct about the middle seat in the Prado, we’ve had a 2012 model since new and everyone that’s sat in that seat has hated it. Would not want to do a long trip in tat seat. Other than that it’s been a fantastic vehicle over the last 6 years(105k) and has only needed regular services.

    Another good report Andrew - I’m a Toyota owner now and despite the impressive off-road abilities of the Land Rover and Jeep their well-known poor long term reliability and build quality is a problem - in fact despite a strong Jeep campaign in Australia during the last year or so sales have dropped off quite significantly compared to Toyota for example - their service/customer culture is woeful and I would never buy something built in the USA, UK (India) or here in Australia. As far I’m concerned Toyota is the only off-road brand that will get you there and back with confidence. John in SA.

    You love bashing the Disco 2, but do think about it this way; it ended up having a CDL, a ladder frame, solid axles, excellent clearance, excellent suspension travel and very acceptable on-road handling. It IS a better car than a Disco 1, the traction control with center lock is pretty good for it's time.
    I test drove a Disco 5 and holy cow that is a nice car. Flip on all the off roady bits and raise the suspension to the highest setting and that thing would go anywhere.

And handles rough roads a lot better than the Mk2. The Shogun Sport is the best model they have made to date,

    Bloody brilliant vid! Loved the ending and thought your review was pretty much spot on (even being a LR fan). I agree with eh Jeep QuadraTrac system, when I first saw it in action against my D2 in 2002 I was well impressed, just better and allowed more fine grained control when you got used to it. Cramped interior and marginally better engine (at the time, get better with development). So, G Wagon for you next then ??

    • @raymondclark1785

    Andrew great video as always . Also noticed in the description that you referred to the US spec Discovery as the LR5. They stopped that naming scheme, it’s just Discovery again.

    That is absolutely fascinating. I had a Disco 1, 1994. Loved it to bits, until it rusted to nothing. Would I buy a new one, No. I, like you, find them extremely ugly and let's be honest, with all the electronics, would you trust it? Your take on the other vehicles, is equally interesting. All manufacturers seem to think that they know exactly what we require, whilst sitting in their offices sipping tea.
    I'll stick to my old series 3 safari. At least I can fix it.

  • @adriaanvanwyk7064

    I would love to hear your take on vehicles like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, Isuzu M-UX, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, etc and/or the double cab bakkies they are based on (Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton, etc) as I think globally these vehicles have become the entry point to 4x4 vehicles and off-roading for many people. The vehicles you reviewed in this video have become so expensive that many are simply not affordable to the everyman anymore. (Entry price of the Discovery 5 in South Africa is ±R1,6mil or ±AUS$134,000!)
    These other vehicles are often also best sellers in countries like South Africa and Australia for this very reason - you generally get of lot of bang for your buck. As you well know, Saffas and Aussies love getting off the beaten track but can't always afford a dedicated vehicle for this purpose (like your lovely Troopy for example) and thus need a vehicle that can perform the daily school/work run and do the odd bit of weekend off road driving. And who knows? Maybe we can get another good old-fashioned Andrew rant about something in one of these vehicles that the rest of the journalists out there dare not say for fear of never being given a vehicle to review, ever again... ;)
    Keep up the good work, I really enjoy the content! Thank you!

    Andrew you are saying that you can’t live with the Prado interior, probably is not the best interior but, how you can live with the 70 series interior? That interior is from a 30 old year car. How can you explain that?

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see that age has any bearing on it. Some interiors from cars made in the 60s' were the most interesting of all time. The Prado dash is far better in almost every respect but for the fact that it is deadly dull. The 70-series dash at least has character. (BTW This dash was first seen 12 years ago.)

    • @camiloortega1790

      4xoverland yes, maybe was seen 12 years ago but, that kind of interior was the ones that 80’s and 90’s car. The question is: is the Prado interior functional for you in the same way that the 70 series is functional for you?
      PS. Thank you for your response. I’m watching your videos the whole weekend and I appreciate your content. I just bought a 2019 Toyota 4Runner and I can’t wait to travel just the way you do on your 70 series.

    From a USA perspective, most Jeeps that see dirt are the Wrangler, the discovery is generally known for horrible reliability due mostly to it's gasoline V8, but capable off road, the Prado is sold here as a Lexus, and therefore, expensive but capable off road. The Montero/Pajero has been unavailable for some time but the first and second generation has a following and they can be bought cheaply, again, no diesel, only gasoline powered V6 models which are good as long as you change the timing belt at recommended intervals. Me personally, I'm looking for a first generation Montero for simplicity and strength.

    By this video, you must go for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, V6 diesel. Best allround 4X4 on the market. The only criticism was lack of after market parts, well in most instances eg Trailhawk, you don't need to do a lot of mods. 4WD system perfect, ride height perfect with airlift, but you can put on a bullbar/winch, driving lights, larger tyres if you want to, roof rack, so what more do you want. Heaps of power, 3500kg tow rating and great fuel economy and at a good price.
