    If you flip the lid over when you store the boxes, then the stem nests inside the box.

      Where the heck were you when I was contemplating the stem during the build Mark? I can't believe I didn't think of that. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestion. It is very much appreciated.

    Just fantastic, such a simple idea but oh so effective ... the burning just adds to the overall effect 👍
    You could take this idea and expand it by making the front panel replaceable or put the design on a piece of slot in plexi ... means they could be used to mark other special times of the year or just different themes ........ this would be perfect for creating on a laser!!

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  ปีที่แล้ว

      This would definitely be a fun project for the laser but then I wouldn't get to use my scroll saw. Thanks for tuning in Barry and for chiming in with your suggestions, It's appreciated.

    I make my lanterns out of 6x6 treated timber.. But i cut faces on the 4 sides
    so if you put them on the windowsill you can still see a face. I use treated timber
    so i can put them outside with a tealight inside a jam jar you would call it a
    jelly jar.. Screw the jam jar lid to the inside of the lantern lid so as you open
    the lantern you can easily get to the tealight. Plus the jam jar reflects the light..

    Great video, thanks. Learned a trick to share. For these projects where you would use a stainable wood filler, put blue tape where you will be putting in bad nails. Then put the wood filler in, and while still wet, pull off the tape. When dry sand the wood filler. This trick keeps the wood filler from spreading too far and absorbing into the wood.

    These look amazing and I'm sure I'll try it! My family also really likes Halloween and my daughter even came to me a month ago asking to borrow my scrollsaw so she could make some Halloween decorations. She is 27 but it was still fun having dad and daughter shoptime.
    Yesterday on he news, I saw a story that the Markham fair is this weekend. Good luck if you are entering the contests again.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I entered the competition Jim but there is a new judge that started last year that seems to have it in for me and have the attitude of "everyone deserves a trophy". Last year he disqualified my X-wing fighter after making up his own rules on the fly and this year, he gave the excavator a 3rd place ribbon. The first place and second place ribbons went to projects that my granddaughter could have made. When you take skill out of a competition as a means of judging, then it is no longer a competition and it just becomes a random distribution of ribbons. Thanks for tuning in to the show this week and for the kind words.

      @@acutabove_woodworkings I'm sorry to hear that. I must be incredibly annoying to put so much work into your projects and have it discounted. I'm sure that all of your fans here would agree with me that your channel deserves a first place trophy!

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JimLambier It was disappointing to say the least but it seems to be the norm for today's society. Hard work doesn't pay off and you can get the top prize by putting in the least effort, so why strive for better? We are creating a lazy generation that has zero ambition and an incredible overdrive in entitlement. I sometimes worry about the future generations and what will become of them if this keeps up.

    You can put the stems and flip the lid over so the stems go inside the box, you’ll still have a flat top surface to stack the others on top

    • @acutabove_woodworkings

      You are not the first to suggest that but I wish that that suggestion came in while I was working on these. LOL. I can't believe that I didn't think of it. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestion. It's a great one.

  • @bbkobudo
    @bbkobudo ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice project... couple of thoughts. 1) if there were a stem (which I like), couldn't you put the lid on upside down and then store them stacked like that? 2) Do you think that wax paper could replace the plexiglass? It may be much cheaper with similar results.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Another viewer also suggested storing the boxes like that with the stem on the inside. Where were you guys when I was designing these lanterns? LOL. Wax paper could definitely be a cheaper alternative to the plexiglass but I'm not sure of its longevity. For that matter, if it didn't last, it would be cheap to replace. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your comments and questions.

    The only thing I liked about Halloween as a kid was making decorations. Didn't care about Tick or Treating, but man I liked drawing and coloring stuff...never ate much candy. I would make all kinds of things and hang them everywhere lol. This project WILL BE on my agenda for next year! No time this year. With the help of my granddaughter, I'm sure! She will like this show! A great show Kenny and a great idea! Did you spray a satin finish over the charred wood? Enjoyed, take care!

    Another nice project Kenny. ..... except for setting behind a scroll saw for hours and putting the blade through a gazillion holes😁
    I made a few of these last year but use different lights. I really like the colored puck light you used. I have looked on Amazon and I see the same style light with remotes for color change but they are not rechargeable. They run on 3 AA batteries. Do you have a link or more info to the ones you used?
    Thanks. JimE

      I have added the link to the video's description Jim. Don't knock sitting behind the scroll saw for hours. It's the most relaxing form of woodworking in the shop. If sitting for hours isn't your thing, do it in shifts of 15 minutes. Thanks for tuning in this week. It's appreciated.
