Oooooo! I bought a used router from a guy and he gave me a bunch of bits (including this one) and the bushings. I had no idea what those bushings were for but now I know! Wow! How fun! I've got to try this!
I love the fact that you don’t use a CNC I love when things are made authentically everything by hand because that’s just the way I make things myself great job
I was sceptical at first, but I really think the rounded corners look better. Especially for the nose hole. Well done. Since I live in a small appartment now with limited access to woodowrking tools and space, I've been looking for a seasonal project I can sell. I'll have to snag this one! Just off the top of my head, I can see a thanksgiving and Christmas variant. Maybe a New Years one...
Love the channel name, I think this is the first time watching your video. I have a cnc but my dad is old school so I wanted to check it out. Thanks for sharing!!!
Glad you enjoyed it. I do all sorts of stuff Mark :) Tidbits of random (partial genius) exude sometimes when I least expect it. I surprise myself with things I say or do sometimes too hahahaha
I've just made a bunch of these using a CNC, a Jigsaw, and a Scroll Saw to see which was best for me. I'm not sure why I didn't think of a router template. It looks much, much faster for the simpler, smoother faces. Definitely giving this a go! :)
Thats, the only tool I dont have yet. Router. My husband was given me some of his old tools. Which I didn't care if it 2as used or not. I love theses boxes. Ive seen them and Ive gotten told you better not buy them. Because you can make them yourself. Thank you for sharing them. My oldest daughter Birthday is next month perfect gift for her home
Subbed I’ve done the guide bushing trick on some of my repetitive builds…makes life so much easier and like most woodworkers exactness, squareness, consistency and flawlessness are always the target (not necessarily the outcome) but using templates with a router is a step towards that goal……just gotta make one really really perfect template and the rest is a breeze 👍
Excellent tip! I have a CNC, but I might just cut the templates with it and do the production runs on my router table with my beefy Porter Cable 3hp beast.
That is a great approach to making those! I have only made 2 of them and they are on my front porch for personal use. I used cedar pickets for mine. I cut my first one with a jigsaw. It got a little hairy cutting it out that way so i switched over to the scroll saw on the second one. Your way seems so much safer and definitely faster once you get your templates made. Keep up the great work!
Nice vid, Kevin. I have a Ryobi trim router, but annoyingly you cant get collars for them. This could probably be done with a copying bit as well. Cheers, and thanks for sharing.
Great idea with a pattern bit. I am thinking about investing in some spiral cutt pattern bits. RE collars: couldn't you use a standard collar set for another brand and adapt the plastic baseplate to accept it?
@@MakinSawdust Maybe. But they key would be to have it 100% centered. I have 3D printed a new base plate with integrated collar, but it is slightly off centre.
I have been using a palm router with CNC bit as small as 1/16 and you can make them square tiny lines to get spooky teeth and I think that would actually be really cool thank you.
@MakinSawdust I'm new to woodworking, and I just purchased a Bosch plunge router 1/2", but it came with a 1/4" Collette adapter. My question is this: What 1/4" bit should I buy for doing my box 'O lantern? Also, do you have a preferred brand of bits?
@@michelleleeginger5225 I would use a 1/4" or 3/16" single or double flute bit. Use the collar sleeve as well like I show in video. Amana bits are a bit pricey, but super high quality. I would stay with a more affordable bit to start with because you are new to woodworking. You mayy break a bit while youare learning the technique

Great idea! Thanks for the video. What platform do you sell these on? Seems like the market is pretty saturated with people selling these - do you have any tips on getting seen ahead of all that competition?
This video is 2 years old, so I'm late to another party, oh well. I have a question, that I hope isn't too stupid... Would it save time to free-hand the original faces, with your round bit? Then, when it's time to mass cut them, using the hand-routed faces as a guide, you can go to town. I'm just a curious kinda guy. Thanks!!

Would it work with a 1/8" straight bit, or would it be too hard on the bit? The smaller bit would tighten up the corners, if one wanted to do that. Thanks!
I'm guessing that it would be hard on the 1/8 bit. If you use it my suggestion is just take it slow. Using 1/3" plywood could cause bit deflection if you cut to fast
