Archer: Imperial vs Metric system

- The comic effect of how the cast moves from one standard of measurement to the next with a conscious regard to how correct they need to be yet so confused on what standard is really in play at any particular time is just brilliant.
as always the cast in Archer offers a mockery of there being several standards as opposed to a universal measure that truly defines the word. - ตลก
What gets me is the fact Archer and Mallory hate the metric system, but they can perfectly convert between imperial and metric.
Shows that they don't hate it out of ignorance
And Mallory knows who Thomas Corwin Mendenhall was enough to use him as an accurate insulting comparison.
@@willchurch8376 yeah I caught that joke too because it was mendenhall that convinced the entirety of the United States in the 1890s to have every single unit of measurement in the US be based upon the Metric system as their base
Meaning that the inch will always be expressed in 2.4cm as it's foundation and so on for the remaining Customary units
Fun fact one of the the 3 variations for the unit of the Mile this year in 2023 finally got retired, the Survey Mile
Well they are international spies, it'd kind of be a dead give away if they couldn't
and archer doesn't know what's a gill
“Really? Cause you never think of those other 2 as having their shit together” most American thing to say
lmao
Why? He was just stating facts.
You ain’t wrong 😂
Nah the Most American thing would be to not be aware of the existence of either country
@@guppy719 wait. There are other countries besides America? Do you think they discovered electricity yet?
"Doctor Who money."
Sterling as in silver right?
sterling as in pounds
It's the official money to pay the fare for the TARDIS
That Pounds Sterling joke was simply COMEDIC GOLD👏🏾👏🏾
Especially how it seamlessly integrated into the conversation
Technically comedy silver. 🫰🏻
@@tonyattardo9350999 silver
And the shiton, 900kilos not quite a full tonne
Thomas Corwin Mendenhall was an advocate for the metric system in the US. All I can say is what a name drop by Mallory
The whole series is filled with crazy references like that. It’s actually quite clever.
And he succeeded in convincing the entirety of the United States government in having their systems of measurement be set in the foundation of the metric system and it's values
OmG READ a BOOK! 😂
No references to that pioneer of cocaine studies ... Sigmund Freud?
"No I mean pounds.."
"STERLING!"
This is brilliant lmfao
Honestly. The writers of the show really nailed that joke!
For those like me who did not get that joke let me explain as I had to google it... the full name of pounds is Pounds Sterling. Literally any American not familiar with the UK wouldnt get that and whenever shows like say Doctor Who reference pounds they dont say "oh give me 10 pounds sterling" they say "give me 10 pounds." Is it a smart joke? Yes as it forces you to be knowledgeable of the official name of a given currency. Is it a brilliant joke? No, as many people including myself would not get the joke as the official name of Pounds Sterling is not common knowledge in America which has arguably an education system that is flawed and problematic.
@@zachorryy eh it’s not *that* obscure of a fact
@@jamesdakrn as an American, I has absolutely no idea
As in Doctor Who Money
I love the fast conversions.
The new seasons just cant compare
Same, that’s why I never like sitcoms. Jokes and fast paced dialogue take breaks in between random laughs. In Archer, we don’t need help laughing, we need help stopping laughing.
@@husseinhamie8735 season 12 was better than the first 4 combined
@@CashCrownz idk it's lost its feel for me now but I'll still continue to watch.
@@husseinhamie8735 a lot of people say that. i mean the show is going longer then many shows. so i respect that, the animations makes up for the unhinged episodes.
The most underrated line is when Archer says, "you never think of those 2 other countries as having their shit together."
Underrated? It's the only line that actually made me audibly laugh.
I’m literally watching this because I couldn’t get this line out my head!
The fact that Cyril said they had lost 125 kg, and Archer goes on to say that he lost 44.092 lbs (20 kg) and then that pam lost 100 then 5 kg, for a total of 125, adding and converting on the spot.
The crew always looks confused but they usually have their eye on the bigger picture
thing is, in America, we are taught both systems and also conversion factors.
Most people can't do that kinda math that quickly in their heads though lol
This show has the greatest running gags ever. And just, overall, some of the best comedy writing ever.
I love the scene transitions that both end/start with the same phrase.
I still think about that Idioms episode where Archer slowly descends into madness as everything he says is lost in translation due to being a figure of speech.
@@JonesCrimson Which episode was that again?
“Welcome to Nazi Canada” does it for me folks
You should see what he did after, to emphasise his disrespect

I prefer "shite ton"

😄😄😄😄😄
Love that Archer can instantly convert from metric to imperial, but doesn’t know the difference between grams and kilograms
Customary lol, the US and the British Imperial have different values for their units such as the Mile and the Yard
The US didn't retire it's version of the mile untill 2023 this year, the Survey Mile
I wonder if by this time he figured out hydrogen/helium.
I wonder what size gallon Liberia and Burma/Myanmar use ...
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 About 8 Gils. 😀
Liberia was founded by the US, so that one is easy. Their capital is actually named after James Monroe.
"FORGET POUNDS! WE ARE DOING KILOS!"
Ok, now I respect Cyrill even more
Doctor who money.
Archer lost 44.092 lbs which is exactly 20 kg.
He sticks to the imperial system even when it is least convenient.
I love how more and more happy and excited Cheryl gets with every slap/backhand Pam gets! Smile, giggle, exclamation, bouncing with excitement.
One more slap and it would be a total sploosh
@@kartingpt Totally!
This show is frickin' brilllant! One of the crassest comedies have also borne witness to. However, one of the funniest and smartest shows on television!!!
I always love how pedantic Archer (or the team in general) was about their insults.
Hands down the best show on television
Seasons 1-7 are untouchable, seasons 8-10 are just good, season 11 is bad and season 12 is an improvement but not at the same level of 1-7
@@claudiorigli6833 Correct. The quality has gone way down.
"WHAT EVER UNIT OF MEASUREMENT" lives rent free in my head all the time
I love how Archer and his mom are always drinkin, like any chance they get. 😂
The Thomas Corwin Mendehall quip made me pause to finish laughing
archer was a nerd growing up. its why the flashbacks of him playing lacrosse as a kid are him alone. its why he knows random trivia, knowing random inventors and historical figures when no one else does. it's why he's always trying to look tough. ever speak to a guy who's actually an operator? they don't walk around saying they're the world's greatest anything. he's compensating. it's also why he can convert metric to standard so quickly. people think he's dumb, and he is. but he's also classically educated like Mallory would've wanted him to be, he's just also immature and sheltered
There’s always like 3 conversations going on at the same time.
Love how Archer can come out as a blockhead, but in reality he is one of the smartest characters in the show.
I hear jerry smith
Misread "Net profits" as "NFT profits" and let's face it, ISIS *would* go all in on that shit
Pam definitely would
When Archer begins to argue semantics, just don't bother, you won't win. LOL.
Imperial system...
Sucks
Rules
Boosh and or kakow.
Omg this is incredible.
As an American who uses the metric system the majority of the time, I genuinely don't know why we still use the imperial system....
Ex colony perhaps?
Mostly becaise our country is nearly the size of Europe, and it would be a fiscal and logistical nightmare converting every road sign to metric. How are we going to fund NATO if we have to spend so much money on ourselves?
can i use your clips in documentary vedio on you tube
sure, you are most welcome
Pounds. Sterling. If they thought I'd his name for that joke at the start id worship that person
It's also worth mentioning Archer lost that 44.092lbs because Mallory didn't run any checks on her buyer first so she definitely deserves partial blame.

It’s PAM’S fault!
Burma? We can at least say confidently that Archer takes place some time before 1989.
But they have cell phones in the show though

All I know for certain is that Ten Foot Three Centimetres isn’t 123 Inches.
Made that mistake 45 years ago and people never let Me forget it.
10' 3" is 123"
@@12345....... Ten Foot Three Inches IS One Hundred and Twenty Three Inches, but One Hundred and Twenty Inches and Three Centimetres ISN’T.
Imperial is cultural, while metric is used in STEM. Hospitals use Celsius when we chart, but we tell the patient in Fahrenheit
Fahrenheit is more precise.
@@georgeprchal3924 No it isn't lol. For one the difference in precision of the degree is irrelevant for human body temperature. But more importantly you can decimalize down to the level of precision needed.
There are arguments to be made for using inches, but fahrenheit is pure nonsense. There is absolutely no advantage to using units that dont mean anything or convert into other fields of measurement. (I.e the energy to heat one litre/kilo of water one degree Celsius is one joule)
@@trequoryeah, nothing like asking the temperature and hearing 38.3 degrees because the gap between one degree Celsius is so large.
The things Malory causes .
“Welcome to nazi Canada” will never stop being funny
Surprised they didn't go all out for the losing pounds, as in weight vs money joke
...okay but can we agree Imperial is more convenient for typical laymen work or any work that doesn't need ungodly levels of precision, and metric is better in scientific terms purely because it can be as precise as necessary?
Wish they went with Mallory’s plan
A firm 12 centimeters would be pretty accurate for me, ladies
Want to throw this out there. The "ton" unit of measurement isn't exclusive to the metric system. It exists in the imperial measurement system too.
yeap, imperial ton and metric tonne
@@profesaprinci999 Are we talking long or short tons?

Thomas Corwin Mendenhall 😂😂
No one is going to the boozer and asking for 568 ml, they say make mine a pint and for that reason the imperial system will never fully fade away.
Just ask for half of liter.
Why are they using the metric system anyways their in the states.
ikr?!
Probably out of an attempt to be like the CIA or the military, which use metric.
Because all the other countries they're trying to do business with (like Colombia) use Metric, and the weight of the product is most cleanly quantified in kg. And the fact the CIA uses Metric should have tipped them off from the jump.
for whatever reason quantities of illicit substances are almost always measured in metric
Cocaine is generally sold with metric units because pretty much all drugs medicinal or illicit are metric in America. Even food nutrition labels are metric.
I'm still unclear on the gill, vis a vis unit of measure
1/4 of a pint
"Empirical"
Really?
I’m so confused!
Sterling & Mallory: USA, Liberia and Burma
Everyone else: The rest of the world
They forgot how they use the metric system in Germany 😂😂
gold
The metric system was NOT developed to be more fundamentally accurate - it was designed as “common” universal measurement system for trade. There were hundreds of differing ways of measuring things in the world 300 years ago and corruption was rife with taxes, levies fees etc on goods crossing borders. The Base-10 or decimal system was implemented as it was logical and simple to calculate with. Vestiges of this problem exist today e.g the Gallon used in UK and USA is NOT the same volume even though they use the same fricken name! The mile was NOT the same length around the world until 1958 when the Statute Mile was defined - as 1602.334 metres no less!
I think that going from hundreds to ~2 systems is a win
But also physics becomes slightly simpler.
@@shigekaxif only we could go from two... to one.

Burma and Liberia sort of ruin the old joke of "There are two types of countries in the world, those that use metric and those which have been to the moon".

Doctor Who money 😂😂😂
The only math HS kids know is how to convert between oz's and grams...
Also isn't ironic how the US fought a war for independence from Britain, but still use their old Imperial system...
We don’t. We use the US Customary System. Claims that we use Imperial are just British propaganda.
Never understood the point of pounds, or miles/feet for that matter. Their measurements make no sense; 12inches = 1 foot, 5280feet = 1mile. Our measurements make perfect sense; 100cm = 1m, 1000m = 1km, etc.
we are all the product of our colonial masters. Think of it, the standards we adopt today (USB-C etc) will be called into question decades from now. It is not that your system of measurement is superior to any other person's, it is what you found and what was taught to you (indoctrination)
A foot was the average length of a man's foot, it's 12" cause it is 12 thumb lengths, and a mile was originally 1000 paces, the imperial system doesn't divide evenly because it was a unit of measure based on biological references, as opposed to scientific ones
Plus temperature relates to human comfort, not the phase changes of water. Same way theres 12 hours on a clock because mesopotamians counted on base 12 using the pads of the finger
@@williambell7763 This. Yes, metric is more accurate, which is why you'd use it for accurate measurements. Imperial is more focused on trade and human comfort, it's arbitrary but works for the intended purpose.
It's a base of 12 which is easily dividable whereas metric is not easily divided.
Measurements can be anything, it's all arbitrary. Base 12 is probably the superior counting system to Base 10, but the teaching of decimal notation has become so widespread that it wouldn't be worth re-educating the entire world and re-configuring every digital system on the planet to calculate in 12s instead. So we stick with the inferior system out of convenience even though it does stupid things like dragging 10 divided by 3 out to infinite 3.3333s. Likewise the US sticks with the clumsier measurements for a base 10 system because people are already used to them and metric isn't so much more advantageous as to be worth re-educating the entire nation.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
