Noisy LG Refrigerator Repair

  • Our 2 year-old LG refrigerator (model LFXS24663S) was making a noticeably loud "buzzing" sound while the compressor was running. The sound measured around 72dB from about 10ft. I contacted LG support and they were not helpful at all. There are other videos on TH-cam documenting this sound ( • Lg lfcs25663s vibratio... ). I did a little troubleshooting and determined the source of the sound was a resonance condition with the plastic condenser drip pan and condenser fan shroud. After a bit of trial and error I was able to correct the condition. Three things needed to be done to eliminate the noise; 1) correct the manufacturing defect with the condenser fan shroud 2) isolate bottom of the drip pan from the refrigerator base frame with foam 3) isolate the back of the drip pan from the refrigerator lower-rear skin.
I do not show how to remove the lower, rear access panel from the refrigerator. There are several videos that demonstrate how to do this if you need guidance ( • LG Refrigerator Disass... ). Simply remove the six Phillips-head screws securing the panel and remove.
This is a rather easy repair to make requiring only basic hand-tools and a small amount of packing foam sheeting. If you can remove and install a screw, you can make this repair.
The noisy condition is attributable to poor manufacturing quality control and poor design quality. This was my first experience with LG product support and I found it to be poor. As a result I could not endorse LG products.

Had exactly the same issue with a different LG model. Been driving me nuts for almost two years. Since this was my first fridge with a linear compressor, I assumed that this is the way it's supposed to sound. Last night I could not sleep, the noise was unbearable. Got up at 1am, grabbed a screwdriver, moved the damn thing, and removed the backplate. I started pushing components around to see where the vibration comes from and to my great surprise, I realized that it was the stupid fan all along! Used some rubber pads and fixed it in 10 minutes!
Today I browsed youtube to see if it's just my unit or this is a generic issue. I am shocked by the number of people experiencing the same issue. What a shitty design and build quality! LG should be ashamed of themselves! I wish I'd come across your video two years earlier!

What a great story! I am that guy also who will get out of bed at 1AM with a screwdriver to handle business. I laughed really hard at this.

We received our LG refrigerator not long ago and from the start it had a loud rattle. I found the tip here so well done it gave me the confidence to have a look. This fridge was quite noisy and I was prepared to follow all the advice in tracking it down. When I removed the rear cover to allow access to the compressor and fan etc. I found a plastic cover plate had broken loose and was sitting beside the compressor. Every time the compressor came on this plastic part would bounce around vibrating on the floor right beside the compressor. I am not sure if it covered the rear left wheel or the electrical connections to the compressor so I simply removed it. Never had a quieter refrigerator than I do now :) Pull the cover and have a look, there may be a very simple fix.

Same noise on my LG fridge…so annoying. I have a different model, but my noise was in this same location and was a combination of the metal back(removable) panel combined with a couple of the refrigerant lines touching each other. Your video inspired me to fix it. Peace and quiet again! Thank you sir.

Thank you very much. Until I found this video I was about to call a repairman out. Previously my Google search stated that it was the compressor going out. I used a piece of cardboard to cushion the bottom and the tray. The noise is gone now.
    Thanks.

I have had this noise issue for the last 6 months, tried taking out the evaporator fan and oiling it but this made no difference, this video has shown me where the actual noise is coming from and I am about to try what you did, I feel my agony of this droning noise is about to be gone.

Mine wasn't the tray but the whole condenser, it had 1 long pipe coming out of the top that was setting up this harmonic vibration, the cure was a piece of rubber to dampen a section of the pipe and the sound disappeared, also the leading edge of the fan blade had about 1/4" of thick furry dust caked onto it. The air inlets were fairly blocked too and 2 mouse carcasses were found amongst the dust bunnies in the tray. End result is I have to put my ear right to the fridge to hear it running, sounds like brand new again and the compressor is nearly silent.

Bought a brand new LG fridge March 12th of this year. (2022) It vibrates and buzzes intermittently, but will go on for about 2 hours. I can't even describe how stressful this noise has become to deal with. Had an LG tech come out a week after we bought it. He unscrewed the back panel, briefly looked at it and screwed it back on. He then told me we should just try to sell our fridge on Kijiji. Wtf?
A second technician is coming out tomorrow - I asked for someone different. He said "Don't be mad if I can't find the problem." So, I'm not holding out much hope. I will NEVER buy another LG appliance again.

Am I the only one tuned into the high pitch sound?? Not the rubbing. It’s the HIGH PITCH THAT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

Thanks for the video. On my LG it turned out to be two of the condenser tubes touching. Just plain old sloppy manufacturing.

Thanks for your informative video. In my case, I discovered that at least one or two of the metal retainer clips that hold the compressor to the mounting plate/rubber supports
were loose and vibrating when the compressor is running. This was very loud and annoying. I tried reshaping the clip to improve the tension, but, did not seem to help, however
tried using a few zip ties to secure the loose/vibrating clip to the mount/base plate, and also used a small pair of small vice grips clamped onto the compressor base plate. The vice grips were fastened to the base plate, about 1/2 way between the Right front, and Right rear compressor retainer clips. So far, this has seems to have reduced the vibration,
and, for the time being has made a huge improvement in the noise level.

Just drill a hole and put a zip tie on it you won’t have to take it apart and then quicker thanks for the video

Thanks for making this video. Mine turned out to be the metal tubing that runs by the fan housing to the compressor. I gently bent it ever so slightly and removed some foam that wasn't necessary. Also added some thin yoga mat foam under foam and rubber isolators.

Why do we have to fix it, we bought it new! (I have the same issue).
Manufacturers say it’s just a leveling issue. Anyway I’ve had lots of refrigerators and none had these problems.

I have a similar sound on my LG, this vibration issue is certainly better than needing to replace the compressor... I think my problem is also intensified by side cupboards pressing against the refrigerator... Once I can pull the fridge out, I'll dig a bit further into this sound... Unfortunately, the fridge is STUCK, and I can't pull it out of it's opening, so I may need to empty it to lighten the load... Stay tuned and I will post what I find... Thanks

In my case, I found the coils were vibrating on the holder frame... For a quick fix, I zip-tied a piece of foam between 2 coils, and that quieted it 85% back to something more reasonable...

What a total piece of trash! I will NEVER buy an LG product again. My LG LMXS28626S was almost $3,000 and started making these annoying buzzy noises all the time right after the 2 yr mark. In my previous home I had my GE Arctica Profile for over 6 yrs and never had these kinds of silly issues.... Argh.
